  • Rebecca Koltun is known for her adventurous spirit and a beautiful heart. With her whole life ahead of her, a tragic skiing accident left Rebecca with a devastating spinal cord injury and learning to live life as a quadriplegic. Rebecca’s family home in Plainview, NY requires a renovation that would make it accessible - that's where George Oliphant and George to the Rescue stepped in!

    I have always admired the work George has done, especially since I am a retired occupational therapist. This time, I cried tears of joy to see what George and his team of angels did for Rebecca and family in my previous hometown of Plainview!

      I have a Son that is paralyzed from the waist down. So I understand what Rebecca is going through. I only wish that my Son had his own place . He lost his previous home due to a Divorce. Hopefully he will be in his own place soon and have access to all that being a paraplegic requires .If I had the finances I would buy him a house with everything he needs to be comfortable.

    A truly lovely story. I hope she reconsiders that ambition to attend med school; he has the grit and persistence to make a fine physician. (so says a retired biochemist who started grad school in a wheelchair in the 1980's.)

    I hope that she will continue her reach for a medical education. There is so much she can do still and with all the fields of medicine, research etc, she can still have her professional dreams because she has her brain and so much assistive technology to aid her in achieving independence. I know quite a few people with her level of disability and they went to Uni and are successful. Friends of mine have trachs and they are professionally employed: lawyer with his own law firm, owner and president of an IT company...it can be done.

    Beautiful, independent home! Good driving Rebecca, I use a power wheelchair myself--and welcome to the club. Sorry you had such a hard way here but we have a lot of fun too, and you're quite welcome. I'm smitten with your wonderful smile and symbolic art, and look forward to see how you grow into your new life. All the love from MN.

    Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely amazing all of these renovations he does for people that need them and have not 1 cent to try to do it themselves. I just wish we could see this being done to families who can't afford it. Families who are poor and have children or ect that need help.
    It's just always huge houses and I just want to see the smile on a child's face that truly needs it financially wise.
    I hope this makes sense. No ill intent. Beautiful what he does. It's just always those who have good money.

      @Kevin-sm8pn 2 года назад +6

      The problem is that poor people, especially in high cost of living areas, don't tend to own their homes. They tend to live in cramped apartments with other family members and their children. George and his team can't buy them a house and renovate it for them and pay for all of their bills, you know?

    • @dianemoonstone4715
      @dianemoonstone4715 2 года назад +6

      These people are considered Middle Class here in the US. But we don't have Universal Healthcare and if she didn't have health insurance, they're liable for ALL medical and rehab expenses, which are astronomical and for a lifetime. Even with insurance, we've had instances of people losing their homes to pay for these bills. Or not having enough leftover to pay for anything else, including rehabbing their homes. They then are literally Lower-Middle Class who own property, but don't qualify for any government assistance. Whereas people without property, low income, etc., do qualify for government assistance including Healthcare insurance. I am not posting this to be divisive, or to pit people against each other, or as a rebuke for your statement. You have valid feelings for people who are hurting and in need. I feel for everyone in hurtful, dire circumstances. It would be great if everyone helped everyone in need. Our world would be a much better place. We need good people wherever we can find them who help others however they can. I'm grateful for the help provided me, and I'm grateful that people like George and his colleagues exist. They help brighten some people's lives, one family at a time. We all need to find our niche to help somehow, even in much smaller ways perhaps. Wishing blessings, good fortune for you and all of us.

I have told my kids to make sure I have pastels and windows that bring in light if I can’t speak for myself! God will continue to strengthen you like He has Joni Erickson Tada. I really wish more people were interested in universal design and that more living spaces included those ideas. Like it or not, we all age and most of us will eventually have mobility concerns. Why not have homes already designed to allow people to age in place and provide a maximum of independence? It’s not hard; we know how to do it.
    This is a fabulous story, and I’m very glad Rebecca got the living space she needs. I just wish that every severely disabled person stuck in a nursing home or in an inaccessible environment would have these same opportunities. It’s very hard to find adapted homes at any price point, and it’s even harder to find affordable apartments anywhere.
