      36mm without a diver's bezel wears kinda like a 40mm diver. Not small at all, really. Muhammad Ali rocked a miniscule Tank, no reason people with any size wrist can't rock this.

  • @gz7587
    @gz7587 7 месяцев назад +2

    This is stellar, the good parts of this watch are REALLY good. I truly hope there is more to come.
    The GOOD:
    1) Materials - brushed stainless steel, sapphire, screw down case-back
    2) Size- great vintage size, slim
    3) Movement- quality and thin after that modification.
    4) LOVE the brushed syringe handset
    The BAD:
    1) I hate sideways or upside-down numerals on a watch (only exception might be romans, such as on a cartier)
    2) Price [everything is expensive these day], but it's a little high for me considering it doesn't even come on a bracelet, no applied indices, no timing bezel, wish the price would have been lower because of those factors.
    3) Screw-down crown on a hand wind can be really annoying if someone has it as a daily, also, will those threads hold up long term with daily use? That said, this is a tool-y watch and you do get that extra water resistance, so I get it.
    4) Having the word "MAD" right on the dial does make this watch go from CLASSY to amateur-ish. I do very much like the name of the watch, but having that name on the backside only would have been a huge improvement.

  • @AstroVanTribe
    @AstroVanTribe 7 месяцев назад +15

    Congratulations! Happy for you... I like a lot about this watch, all of us watch people just can't help pointing out details we like and dislike, My only criticism would be the "Mad hacker" on the dial - MWC would be enough and look cooler-er, more military - Good job, I hope it's a successful
    run. Would look cool on a leather bund strap

    • @LymanPhillips
      @LymanPhillips 7 месяцев назад +4

      I agree 100% on the MWC on the dial. Also a screw in manual movement - I am skeptical about it's long term durability.

    I feel like I've been waiting for this my entire life! The Mad Hacker, I absolutely LOVE THIS WATCH. I wear almost exclusively a field watch and this is just beautiful. I love the crown, the case, the railroad seconds track, manual winding to complete the vintage aesthetic. Winston Churchill himself would be proud of this sensational Mad Hacker.

    Well done! You absolutely nailed it! Some really nice details here. Drilled lugs check, hand wind check, 36mm check. Dial design check, domed sapphire glass check, strap check, movement not bad, the only worry I would have is the screw down crown combined with a hand wind, I can see some novice watch owners striping the crown tub threads over time. Make sure to give clear instruction on how to hand wind and screw down the crown. 😊😊😊

    Some will complain but I think that using a modified automatic movement with a clutch for the winding so that you can still have a screw down crown is simple and brilliant. It solves the vintage but modern field watch conundrum that so many competitors can't quite nail. Love it 😘👌(chef's kisss)

    It is full of Pluses but one Minus: Unscrew the crown to wind the watch, thats going to take a toll. It will be a winner without the screwdowns. Its the closest to the purest dirty dozen!

  • @predragjo5977
    @predragjo5977 7 месяцев назад +8

    The watch is absolutely stunning but I have a couple of concerns.
    1. Mechanical watch + Screw down crown. Unscrewing and screwing the crown roughly every 2 days can lead to the threads wear earlier than it should.
    2. An automatic movement turned into a hand-winder. The winding mechanism on automatic is not built the same way it's built on mechanicals and is more fragile and prone to wear. Hand winding on an automatic watch is there to occasionally help out and should by no means be used regularly.

    One detail that was extremely common on field and military watches from the 40s (which NOONE seems to do…) is 5 - 55 minute counters on the dial. The new norm seems to be to just add a fat marker behind the hour numerals instead of 5, 10, 15, etc. I’d LOVE to see more watches with the classic vibe with this detail!

The reversed "C" in Mad Hacker is somewhat off for me kinda hurt my eyes seeing it. WR 100 maybe should be a little smaller and thinner font. By the way congrats! This has a lot of potential. Someone would have a problem if it didn’t have a screw down crown

    • @graack68
      @graack68 7 месяцев назад +57

      The difference is that you wind an automatic a couple times to get it going.
      On a manual wind you have to unscrew the crown everyday to wind it.
      The treads can be worn out pretty quickly that way. And then you need a new watch.. . 😅

    • @petrokersta5293
      @petrokersta5293 7 месяцев назад +15

      One doesn’t need to wind an automatic movement for a watch to run as long as you wear it.
      Manual movement needs to be periodically wound for a watch to run every second day or even daily. It puts a lot more wear on crown and threads.

  • @Chrissepisje

    Nice watch, in and of itself. Interesting choice on the numerals. Aside from that, it reminds me of the Smiths PRS 29 a lot which is not a bad thing. It is too bad you chose a screw down crown for a hand wound watch. Hope the threaded tube is replacable.

      yeah pretty much especially when you consider the time and effort in the design phase, working with the suppliers to get the components to spec, QC on the assembly and never really knowing how many units will actually be sold. They would have to peg a price somewhere to cover themselves and for something like this I would definitely say it's a good price.

      @@askari_jones Good points, but why wouldn't I buy a reliable and time-tested Seiko, for the same price instead?

    Well done! Although 36mm is a bit smaller than I like, I'm sure many will be pleased. You've thought of a lot of details, some of which I've not even thought about before. I like that you're adding drilled lugs to the final product as well. I love the dial layout. The only niggle I can think of is the brushing on the hands could be finer, but maybe we can chalk that up to being a prototype? Good on your for insisting on 100m WR, while maintaining a thin design. Insisting on a 4Hz movement is applaud worthy. I do actually have a hand wind issue with a watch with the 9039 where it won't start going until I wind it about 30 times. I need to get it serviced, but it's not a primary rotation watch. The last thing I'll add is the price is excellent, especially for a 9039 based watch. I am sure a lot will be sold!

    That is a lovely watch, I love field watches. All the proportions are perfect. I've already ordered one, and the video hasn't finished yet. Can't wait to stick it on my wrist !!!!

    Congrats Russ! Looks great at a great price point and excellent quality. Just my preference, but the large prominent branding on the dial of such a traditional watch is keeping me from pulling the trigger. Just a thought for the future (I have a feeling this won't be your last project!) Best of luck!!!

    It's great to have your own timepiece, such as those from UGWC, Islander, and JOMW. They look fantastic and are quite collectible. Personally, I prefer a touch of red on the dial and second hand, but the simpler design is still appealing. As a big WWII enthusiast, I love it I just finished watching the documentary "World War II: From the Frontlines". You should consider making a flieger watch next time.😉 Good choice of name, Mad Hacker.

    I really like that. My ideal daily is 37 to 39mm with a 20 but I understand. Like the track around the edge. I love the domed sapphire and the indices, including the slight patina. I like the hands. LOVE what you did with the movement. I might have gone with a sterile dial except for a logo. Really nice overall. I'd be undoubtedly be proud to have designed or co-designed this watch.

    Absolutely great job Russell. It's a really good looking watch, and a very nice movement too. Well done. It's a very good price too. It's a bit small for my taste however I'm sure many other big wristed people will jump at this.

    Looks great. 36mm is good for me, for looks and wear - ironically, the thing that put me off of the Vertex M100 was the 40mm size.

    Bangin' watch Russell! I love the bit of quirk to the numerals, yet a throw back to that vintage Omega. Nice choice altering the Miyota 9039 for hand winding...I can't believe how much real estate you gained in thickness from that move. Crystal looks fantastic!

    I am watching the video on a screen turned towards the sun a bit now. The second hand is either silver pink glow or it is completely invisible. Consider a bit of lume on the top of second hand (above hour/minute lume when they are close of each other), and maybe make it matte.
    Otherwise it is GREAT.

    Really like the look of that watch. I think the manual wind is a nice touch. Keeping it thin looks like it would make for nice proportions. My wife's opinion is that the House of Noori bright yellow strap would be awesome on that watch (insert book smack here).

    Although I have never been a fan of manual watches , that’s a pretty nice watch with a really nice legible numbered face on it for easy to see time at a glance , which sadly is not always a given on time pieces.
