    Sugar Ray fought up to a Hundred bouts before he got his shot at the world welterweight title ,There was also only one world Boxing governing body and eight weights .unlike today where you have almost eight champions at one weight ,Jake LaMotta and Sugar Ray fought when the game was much tougher .If any Boxer today fought a Hundred bouts it would be classed as an extraordinary record. Ray was without doubt the best pound for pound Boxer of all time.

    You cannot truly compare Sugar Ray Robinson to Sugar Ray Leonard or Floyd Mayweather. The difference in time is too great, the training regimes different, the diets, the whole complete life styles are different beyond comparison. What you can say when considering greatness is that Sugar Ray Robinson fought anyone and everyone. He never ducked another fighter or had them analysed before deciding to fight them. Nor did his back up team assess whether the opponent was 1) past their best, so now safe. 2) A big name who was actually vastly over rated. 3) Had other major distractions be they camp problems, hand problems, marital problems, drink or drug problems whatever. Floyd's camp do do that in a big way. No match with anyone dangerous is made while they are still at their best. In Robinson's case that never happened. He met everyone. Given that Robinson was not physically a big Middleweight he naturally had some problems facing Joey Maxim who was a big Light-Heavyweight fighting Heavyweights regularly and a skilful boxer. That said I do believe that under normal circumstances Ray would have out pointed Joey. The situation was what it was and the result stands. One other thing. You often hear guys say they beat Sugar Ray Robinson, but the only one's who did were Jake LaMotta, Randolph Turpin & circumstances allowing, Joey Maxim. After them it was a case of some good and pretty poor fighters beating an old worn out fighter. Terry Downes once replied to a question by saying. "I beat an old fighter named Ray Robinson. I never beat Sugar Ray Robinson. I wouldn't have lived with Sugar Ray Robinson." Shame some of the others were not so honest.

    For those people who saying Robinson is fighting only or padding his record with bums, this is a Robinson career trivia for you:
    In his first 20 fights Sugar Ray Robinson beat Jimmy Tygh who is good enough to beat Carl Guggino, Leo Rodak and Hall of Famer Benny Bass, and another top rated lightweight Pete Lello.
    In only 2 years and 40 fights, he already beat 4 individual Hall of Famers: IBHOF inductees Sammy Anggott, Fritzie Zivic and Jake LaMotta and WBHOF inductee Marty Servo. Not to mention those elite level fighters like Izzy Jannazo, Carl Guggino, Maxie Berger, Maxie Shapiro, Tony Motisi, Norman Rubio, Rueben Shanks and so on.
    In 1943, he fought Jake LaMotta twice in 14 days period sandwiched a fight with top welterweight contender California Jackie Wilson. Wilson is a very, very good boxer who actually had wins over Hall of Famers Jake LaMotta and Kid Gavilan in their primes.
    In 1943 again in just over a month, he fought two rated welterweights Henry Armstrong and Ralph Zanelli.
    From January 10 to February 23 of 1945, he fought welterweight contenders Tommy Bell and George Sugar Costner and middleweight great Jake LaMotta in just over a month period.
    In 1949, just over month he beat Kid Gavilan and Steve Belloise.
    Fast Forward to 1950, he beat Luc Van Dam,
    Jean Walzack, Robert Villemain and Hans Stretz in just 16 days period from December 9 to 25. These are Middleweight elites especially Villemain who holds a world title during that time.
    And from September 1951 to June 1952, he fought 4 individual Hall of Famers Randy Turpin, Bobo Olson, Rocky Graziano and Joey Maxim in just 9 months period. He actually beat Bobo Olson and Rocky Graziano in just over a month period.
    Now if these guy Robinson is only fighting bums like you wanted to portray then perhaps I would rather have a man who fight these kind of 'BUMS.'

      NOOO they definitely trained harder in those days! they had to train to make it through 15 rounds of brutal punishment. The fighting conditions were alot less restrained and the gloves were ALOT less padded than they are now. But ure absolutely right about the hearts and sportsmanship. I think it makes the fight more awe inspiring to see the 2 fighter embrace each other before they go to war.

    • @05gtdriver
      @05gtdriver 10 лет назад +1

      ***** Very well said! I wholeheartedly agree. The world was a much different place 60-90 years ago. Fast food wasn't as it is today, preservatives in foods was practically non-existent, training methods were extreme, but nowadays it's called "core training" lol. Maybe lots of fighters during the depression weren't as skilled due to lack of great trainers to go around, although the greats were just that, GREATS. Hank Armstrong, SRR, Joe Louis, Mickey Walker, Willie Pep, etc., etc. All these champions would mop the floor with all except the most gifted champions of the last 40 years and even then wouldn't lose too often. The toll all those bouts took on these heroes of the past, yet look at Jake LaMotta, nearly 93 years old and still in good health after 100+ pro bout career(and considering the punishment he took due to his style) is amazing. Too much money in today's fight game(at least for a champion). Fighters of yore(even champions) had to fight repeatedly each year just to maintain the lifestyle they felt they deserved to live. When Pretty Boy Floyd earns(after PPV rights) $42+ million for ONE fight, makes it hard to get motivated for your next match.

      Chris Rembert None of the great boxers you listed could punch with SRR. That's both HIT and combination punch. Add in that he was never KOd and you have the difference between him and everybody else. All the 4 on your list were KOd in there career. Armstrong could multiple punch with SRR but
      don't think he could KO with either hand like SRR. He's probably 2nd all-time to Ray.

    • @chrisrembert297
      @chrisrembert297 9 лет назад

      nobodyaskedbut Harry Greb was only stopped twice out of 300 fights, Once early in his carrer and the other due to a broken arm. He was the size of a SMW regularly fighting LHWs and HWs.
      Ezzard Charles defeated Archie Moore 3 times, Walcott twice, Louis, Burley twice, Maxim (who outlasted SRR) 4 times,

    • @nobodyaskedbut
      @nobodyaskedbut 9 лет назад +2

      Chris Rembert You know as well as I do Maxim didn't "outlast" SRR. In fact if that bout had been held under normal conditions Ray likely at least TKOs if not KOs Maxim by the 10th rd. He was way ahead as it was going to the 13th. Charles couldn't hit and in those 4 Maxim bouts didn't KO him. Charles, Moore, Walcott, Patterson and Lesnevich didn't KO Maxim in 12 total bouts. Maxim was only KOd once and rest assured under normal conditions vs SRR would have been number TWO in ONE try. How do I know that? Bobo Olson floored Maxim twice in a bout, a year before Olson was KOd in back to back bouts by SRR. Sugar Ray's versatility is what separates him from everybody else. No one else had the combination of both superior punching AND punch taking & avoiding for so long as he did. Remember without punching there is no boxing. We could go on for decades going back and forth because obviously we have different values in terms of top level boxing.

    • @chrisrembert297
      @chrisrembert297 9 лет назад

      nobodyaskedbut As Maxim said "There was no airconditioning in my corner". According to Kearns, Joey had hurt SRR in the 10th and 12th rounds.
      Charles didn't have 1 punch ko power but he managed to put a painful beating on most of his opponents.
      Just because Olson gave Maxim trouble does not mean Robinson would ko JM. Example, Frasier was able to not only floor but also beat Ali yet Foreman who easily handled Frasier twice was outsmarted by Ali to punch himself out.

      V Ling Damn, that would be an interesting match-up. Everyone might think Robinson would probably KO Hearns because of his suspect chin, but Sugar Ray was dropped by power punchers during his career as well and I doubt any of the guys Robinson faced had the speed and power of the Hit Man. But Ali was a better defensive fighter than Ray, and Ray was a better puncher than Ali- by far. One thing though- Ali's knockout of Bonavena looks a lot like Ray's kayo of Gene Fullmer.

      Chris Rembert Having more fights doesn't make him better. SRR was another level. He should've gotten a shot at the lightweight title when he first started but he was avoided. Greb's KO % was a joke 48 ko's out 261 wins = 18 PERCENT! Paulie Malignaggi has a HIGHER KO % Greb could not break an EGG to make breakfast. SRR = The G.O.A.T!

Only one to beat Tunney. Rumors has it he outscored Dempsey twice in sparring. 300 fights from 140-200+lbs opponents and only stopped twice, Early in his carer and due to a broken arm.
      Grebs power was underrated; He was more about speed, stamina, durability, footwork.

    • @WZ912
      @WZ912 9 лет назад +1

      Chris Rembert "Did you not read my other arguements?' OH YES I DID! That’s why I replied in the 1st place. " Greb’s power was underrated; He was more about speed, stamina, durability, footwork." ...and DIRTY FIGHTING!...you forgot that. :)
      Not even the Almighty Harry Greb himself can not beat the math. The numbers do not lie. Greb's KO % was a joke 48 ko's out 261 wins = 18 PERCENT!…not a puncher. And given that he was a Notoriously Dirty Fighter in an age were God only knows what some fighters had in there gloves,like Dempsey Vs Willard. His Demi-God Herculean Superman Man of Steel Legendary status is a little question. Especially that there’s still NO FOOTAGE of any of his 300 fights. What happened to them?….Did Mickey Walker burn all the film? lol!

    • @chrisrembert297

      WZ912 Back in those days you had to nearly kill opponents to get a stoppage. He was so "dirty" he rarley got caught. all of mayweathers supposedly otherworldly techniques and skills were commonplace back in this era, even amongst white fighters. James Toney learnt all of his stuff watching videos of Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Ray Robinson, Jersey Joe Walcott, etc. watch bobo Olson, Billy graham, joey giardello or joey giambra - all defensively fantastic with incredible boxing skills. None of this hold the hands up in front of the face with no quality head movement crap you see these days. Floyd looks great because he actually learnt some true boxing skills from the greats of the past while his opponents continue to use the boxy, square on, gloves high walk up style that simply doesn't work against a truly educated fighter. boxing has gone backwards significantly, simple as that.

    Let's just give credit where it is due, and we should all be able to agree that SRR was the best, pound for pound, given how many fights he fought (so many more fights) and won. Different eras also brought different factors (that you can't see), training, and fighting styles, so that all has to be considered. SRR was living in the prehistoric much more pathetic version of America, so it was harder then just for him to live his life, let alone fight well, overcome whatever "games" he had to play, and be perfect in the public eye. He was an incredible athlete through and through. Even Muhammad Ali looked up to him. Other great boxers of the time revered him. I mean I don't even know why we are debating this.

      PorkFrog Hi there, I guess you never heard of Langford, Greb and Armstrong. I rate Langford #1 of all time and a toss-up with the other three fighters. Langford is the greatest light-heavy and a top 10 heavyweight of all time. Greb is the greatest middleweight ever and a top 10 light-heavy ever and Armstrong is the greatest featherweight ever, top 5 lightweight ever and maybe even a top 10 welterweight of all time. Robinson is the greatest welterweight ever and a top 10 middleweight ever. I would rank Robinson #2 out of Greb and Arstrong, but Robinson would have almost no chance with Charles or Moore and even Marciano while Langford would beat all three via TKO or KO and was the greatest puncher of all time. Those that saw Langford and Robinson fight, the majority agree Langford was the greatest ever and was inarguably the most avoided fighter ever. While Robinson avoided Burley (although Robinson was slightly better), Dempsey and Greb avoided Langford.

    • @porkfrog2785

      Derek OJ I heard of Greb and Armstrong. I will look up Langford right now...

    • @porkfrog2785
      @porkfrog2785 10 лет назад

      Derek OJ okay, I read about Langford...have you ever seen him fight?
      what did he have or could he do that Robinson couldn't? [besides fight as a heavyweight---Robinson fought Maxim for the light-heavyweight title at 157, and would have won if not for the heat...Ray got devastated by heat exhaustion and actually fell down without being touched at one point. 104 degrees in New York with high humidity]

    • @porkfrog2785
      @porkfrog2785 10 лет назад

      Derek OJ I read some about Burley, and the 'ducking'...
      ...Ray was notoriously flaky and would pull out of fights for any number of reasons--especially after he killed that guy. I don't know why he didn't fight Burley. I've read hearsay quotes, but they are no different than the ones that have Tyson replying to King 'You wanna fight Foreman, you fight'em. I'm not fighting that animal'
      those kinds of things may be true, and they may not
      my statement about Robinson is based on only losing 1 of his first 130[Ray had a long undefeated amateur career as well], and the number of titles, the overall skill, the combination of one punch power and blinding speed, and almost winning the lightheavy title at 157.
      as far as 'ducking', I could be wrong

  • @nobodyaskedbut
    @nobodyaskedbut 9 лет назад +1

    Back then, there were only 8 divisions not the countless phony ones that exist today. Robinson defeated 11 different TRUE champions an astounding total of 23 times. He could hit with either hand for KOs, he was fast with both his feat and his hands, he could take a punch and he was by far the greatest ever at punching combinations. He had more career KOs (108) than Louis and Hagler had combined. No other boxer possessed the entire package like the ONLY REAL Sugar Ray.

      Hugh Hefner Floyd's style has a big flaw.. His defensive skills engulfed his offense. He became little by little a defensive two punch fighter, whose wins are based on points. These other guys fought with a 6 ounce gloves, practically the leather stuck to their nuckles, Floyd would have to open up when he started feeling the punches even on his arms and shoulders.

      pepe velez ovandomesta i agree ray would win in his era because the terms were totally different, but by todays terms floyd would slip his punches and counter him all night

      Right and then again Robinson had 200 fights in his record. So the question is what was the best boxing the one back then, where you had tough champions or the one nowdays where you can become a champion with 20 fights or keeping your belt by protecting yourself with your elbows, fists, ropes, foreheads, even knees. To me really with all due respect FLOYD at times looks pathetic.

      pepe velez ovandomesta i get what ur saying. but when u compare boxers by pure boxing skill i'd say floyd mayweather surpasses everyone based on his skills in the ring, his ring iq, his defense. his skillset is unmatched.

    Proper boxers going at it!! No dramas just mutual respect! How boxing should be. Love 💘❤ this.
    I have a lot more respect for Ray Robinson as a human being. Just a positive human who a lot of good out of the ring. It's a shame you don't hear a lot of this stuff.

    Rocky Marcianno found a lot of old has beens and his fights were hand pick controlled thrown if u get my drift and by the Mob which is a fact a true drunk. Fought a very very old Joe Louis just let the record show lol. Keep it real arm chair athletes.

      The greatest doesn't lose (decisively) his only 2 bouts with Ezzard Charles. Charles would have never beat SRR two straight at same weights.

      +Steven Gonzales Steven You are insane my friend... Floyd is lucky to have no talent opposition. Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Hagler, all would murder Floyd. Floyd is lucky in time to have been born later. No Contest!!

    ray was one of the only boxers who could think straight and naturely react to punches being thrown at him. he didnt play hide in a box like floyd and sit back and let his opponent come to him. ray was aggresive and elusive he would dominate floyd. but i would like to see robinson vs pacquiao prime. that would be an aggresive fight

    This is the story about SRR going against black boxers. When he was on his way up there was no money in fighting other black boxers because at that time not enough people (mostly white) would pay a good price to see two black fighters. However, when he finally got his chance to win the welterweight title in 1947 that changed everything because he was now an instant superstar in the fight game because he was not only a champion but an attractive draw because of his style and incomparable abilities. In 1948 he began to face very good to great black boxers because he was a good enough draw by himself. From March 1948 to March 1950 he had 14 bouts vs good to great black boxers including Kid Gavilan (twice), Henry Brimm, Earl Turner, Aaron Wade, Bernard Docusen (49-2-4), Young Gene Buffalo & George Costner (71-11-3). Most of the time he may have somewhat carried many of them because he didn't want to badly hurt them or embarrass them. If he did KO any of them it was probably personal. That was definitely the case vs Costner who called himself "sugar" and flaunted it in front of SRR who, of course, did not like it. SRR first fought him in 1945 and KOed him the 1st round. He did the same thing to him in 1950. As one could tell by his record Costner was a very good boxer. That is why I believe SRR did not try to destroy most of his black foes. In addition this was after Doyle died after being KOd by SRR in the 1st defense of his welterweight crown. By his own admission he never again had the same attitude in the ring as he had before the Doyle bout.
