I personally love Kaisa's transformation and how it's portrayed, all the star guardian transformations are supposed to be grand, beautiful and triumphant, but Kaisa's is depressing and actually is her lowest point, being given this responsability she didn't ask for it's so amazing to me, such a good contrast

What? No, I think you're just imagining things, that can't be true
this is probably just me pulling this out of my ass, but Kai’Sa, when she trades the charm for her Star Guardian powers, collapses in that slightly flooded room, and that watery environment was already there when she first enters the area. her own tears are added to the water around her, so I wonder if the water is actually the tears of previous Guardians making the same choice, of being forced to choose the Guardian life over their friends, their family, their loved ones. and if so, then how many Guardians have stood there before her for the whole area to be physically flooded?
Considering how dark most maho shoujo series are, it's 100% a pool of the tears of past star guardians.
I just noticed in the scene you were gushing over with the levitating stuff in Kai'sa's room, she's got a stuffed rabbit and manta on the floor. As in, the animals that she and Akali have as familiars. And the next time you see the bunny, the manta is gone.
Something I noticed is the moment that seraphine comforts xayah the lyrics say"don't apologize" kinda reminds me of seraphine's power to hear the hearts. So she knows how to help her is gorgeous and heartwarming

In the behind the scenes, Porter Robinson mentioned that his theme/idea for the song (among other things) was: what if becoming a Star Guardian meant everyone you knew forgot you? I don't think they ended up going with that plot point in the event itself, but it's deeply embedded in the music video. As someone mentioned, the bracelets are forget-me-nots, and Kai'sa has to choose to become a Star Guardian, knowing it'll mean Akali will forget her.
Also, the opening shot and the way Kai'Sa is looking at Akali...I didn't even notice how the camera was showing us that. But def noticed how Akali was looking at Kai'Sa. I look at all of my "friends" that way.
I can assure you that that they didn't end up going with that plot AT ALL, the actual plot deals with inter Star Guardian relationships more than anything else (well, at least it tried to, but I would argue that the overall writing of that entire event was... worse than Sentinels of Light which I didn't think possible).
@@markopusic8258 all bugs aside i got bored with the story by like the second chapter. the wild rift story was so much better, this sg one was just boring cliche and i hate what they did with the characters. everyone except akali, kaisa and morgana a side character with no relevance in the story, literally that ramen guy had more presence than quinn, taliyah or sona. then akali and kaisas actual story together is so mid, hated akali's character
I absolutely adore the idea Porter took and I hope that this conflict could possibly be prominent in the next installment as it could work well with many current characters (Vi forgetting Jinx for example) and for new possible characters in the future for both platonic and romantic relationships.
I'll never get tired of 'but they're just friends!' jokes. Not to mention 'there's no subtlety allowed, because we only have two minutes', that got a guffaw out of me.

I thought that seeing this frame by frame instead of animated and with music would make it easier, but I ended ugly crying with Xayah's scenes. I loved the video when they released it, I'm really glad you did a breakdown of it!
(Also, yeah, the imagery of Xayah and Akali is romantic, without a doubt, BUT friendship break ups can be heart-breaking).
The character acting between Xayah and her team was always so PERFECT to me and it makes me endlessly happy that you think so too.

Fun Fact: in their transformed state Akali and Kai'Sa gloves on the arm they wear their bracelet literally complete each other (Akali's glove with the thumb exposed and Kai'Sa glove that only covers the thumb)

This cinematic made me literally sob and bawl for several good minutes straight, and I didn't even know why.
when i first heard the song and music video i actually teared up
Also, at 39.09 where you're talking about Orianna's reaction to Xayah flailing and upset. Due ot her placement in the frame she can't really reach out or move closer in the same way as Senna or Seraphine because she would then occupy front and center frame, blocking everyone else from the camera.
I suspect that, during the storyboarding of this scene they paid conscious attention to putting Orianna in that spot because it means the person who would not move closer is kept out of the way, allowing everyone else to move more.
You know because they are JUST friends 😌
I had tears in my eyes while watching this analysis and before I go to watch the music video AGAIN, just wanted to add:
- the 'friendship' bracelets have forget-me-nots charms and the field where Kai'Sa wakes up in is essentially a forget-me-nots field
- The moment Kai'Sa emerges from her emotional cocoon is bathed in THE LESBIAN FLAG ALL OVER THE PLACE
No time for subtlety for these two REALLY GOOD FRIENDS 💕

I always liked Xayah and Rakan, but god damn this animation made me so invested in their story. And even just listening to you talking again about it made me choke up. What an amazing piece of animation and storytelling!

I noticed one thing you mentioned early about the memories she's trying grasp on to being displaced and not detailed and shaky memories. You didn't mention in the last flow of memories during her hug. Those memories are detailed, sharp, and in focus. No longer faded by desperation, but strong and reliable.

The only thing you catch while watching the video without really looking to the detail is Friends helps with griefs witch is a already a good message, but I feel like it's a crime(or a blessing for people that like to go in detail) to catch on the details backstory. The animation is very fast and your video always help me to catch on these awesome details and I thank you for that. As always big fan of your work TBskyen.
Star Guardian is just really good at telling stories in general imo. Zoe's design, Xayah and Rakan's skins (turning light during certain animations), hell, even Ahri's W has some storytelling in it. I think that's what people love about it the most, that there's clearly a story going on and that it's very well shown. Xayah and Rakan's recalls are 8 seconds each yet they still manage to tell a strong story. All of the Star Guardian animations have taken it up to 11.
I notice that the pink glint from Xayah's eye turns into to pink glint from Kai'Sa's bracelet around the 27:00 mark. so cool!

I’m so glad you did this video! I love this video and I’m so glad everything I noticed about it was discussed in this video. You’ve inspired me to really take a deep look into animation to see all the story telling beats.
The animation has an excellent way to convey emotions. The facial expressions as well were so good
I really like that Xayah learned to accept the darkness and not try to "cleanse" herself of it

37:45 YES! The first time I watched this MV, I saw this movement and it really drove home that relentless, ruthless need for Akali, um, Xayah to rush towards the shiny thing. That shiny isn’t what she is missing, but it merely gives her the impression that she can have what she wants, if only she leapt from the solid surface that keeps her from danger, that keep her from plummeting into an all-consuming darkness. “If only…that shiny was in my hand, it wouldn’t matter what happens to myself, because I would sated and comforted. I would no longer be missing that part of Me that I left with him.”
That fight against Seraphine’s love for her desperately embodies her focus on doing ANYTHING to fix that loss.

I appreciate all the effort they put into hand drawing this animation, as it is great to listen to you talk with such joy at things you are passionate about. It is why I keep coming back to your videos, it is awesome to be around people who geek out like that. I get to learn about so much about visual storytelling in your videos and be in great company while doing so.
As for the animation - is amazing how much emotion and story telling they crammed full into this. I also was tearing up a little at the whole thing, it hits you hard in the feels and I can really empathise with the whole thing.
Finally! I loved the event (the Wild Rift version anyway) and this song and video were a big part of that.

I find that there is a clear difference in a friend and a best friend. As a girl who has had a girl best friend, there is nothing like it, and I feel like the storytelling of Akali and Kasia really hits the nail on its head. I find it a very clear representation of having a best friend, a person who is "your person". Who you can go to about anything. Someone who doesnt judge you. Someone who wants to spend as much time with you as you with them, and someone who could never leave you, regardless of the arrguing and fights.
I missed that kind of cinematic breakdown from you, very nice :)

I know that no one cares but this music video truly had such an impact on me (and im also a 2d animation student ).
Right when this music video came out i was planning out my next cosplay and wanted to cosplay a star guardian , at the same time my friendship with my best friend ended in a very emotional and intense way. We were supposed to go to our next convention together , and had so many plans for our future and future times spent together that were then all gone. The way this friendship ended and the grief from it sent me into a full on depression that took months to recover from and caused permanent damage to me.
i decided to cosplay star guardian kai’sa because i loved her design and when i saw her story about her friendship with akali ending and the music video telling me that everything goes on even after friendships end helped me heal and feel so much better.
SG kaisa is also confident and caring person who wants to help others , so i really love the character so much.
when I first saw the video I knew the bracelets would become merch. they focused so much on them, and they look expensive, not like the cutsie, cheap or handmade friendship bracelets the average highschooler irl would have. i noticed the same happening in the new worlds video, where the focus for example on the mercedes sponsership, the worlds cup, and the ring. these things felt commercial just from the framing and light
This song made me cry in more than one watch/listen (so did my friends) and that means they did a great job

You know what's a crazy parallel? (I don't really know the spelling of the names of these characters I don't play League PLEASE BE GENTLE)
When we meet Xayah, she's at the window of her school, and the animation has her rear back her head in pensive thought, fingering Rakkan's feather. Near the end of the story and animation when Seraphine embraces Xayah in that moment of empathy, she rears back her head not in pensive thought but in screaming emotional release.
Same motion, different emotion.
I ended up here after seeing a fan-animatic using the song (in a different fandom), which led me to the original music video, which led me to a side-quest of looking up covers of the song until finally this video popped up in the feed. I had not even heard about the star guardian thingy until today.

Late to this but one of my favorite parts are that in the end shot of all the star guardians, Xayah’s friends are hugging her and holding onto her unlike Kai’Sa’s team. Xayah’s team just feels so intimate and I love it
I think it also stands for what they needed most in this moment. In the beginning kai'sa is doubtful and anxious but in the end she has her friends who stand with her determined. On the other side you have xayah who needed community and someone who holds on to her, so she doesn't run away again so they hug her
