Kai'sa's whole part in her space when it's introduced, and her space in general, ties in not just with her KD/A story of being a dancer, but her actual story. Everything is upside down--her whole world was turned upside down when she ended up living in a very upside down or otherwise backwards world, very opposite of the human world. But she flowed with that world, learned to live by that world's rules. It's very infused with symbolism there, and I really love it. I really love how all of their different 'spaces' are infused with their 'real league' counterparts. Akali's defiance and going against the norm while choosing a very solitary path. Evelynn's raw danger and also solitary existence, where people aren't really anything more than objects or food to her. Seraphine living in an enclosed space because the world was too much for her but longing to be a part of it anyways and find the spark and harmony that she briefly felt with her crystal before finally being able to join that world that she was rapidly coming to love. Ahri I think has the least amount of tie in with her real lore, outside of her somewhat solitary existence with KD/A her found family (as she seeks a found family of other Vastaya in her lore as well) Although if we consider how much the rest have tied in, maybe it tells us a little more about who Ahri is or will be or was. Perhaps she is some kind of long lost Vastayan royalty? Would be cliche but still interesting. Anyway, just my thoughts after this video had me thinking about it more--about why their 'spaces' really just fit each of them so well and you can almost feel that in the video. There's no reason to question why they're there--it feels like they belong there.

One thing that's been in my mind is that Ahri's throne kind looks like kintsugi, those broken procelain pieces fixed with gold between the cracks.
It seems to match her personality very neatly, with her being the more experienced one in the group, not being afraid to have learned from the past and such

Marble with gold veins is a thing. It's quite popular in interior design right now. But I have not seen this kind of gold veins that looks like a lightning and it's very defined and cuts into the rock, it's really similar to kintsugi.

I know it's a small change but I love what they did with the body of kai'sa the fact that she is visibly more muscular than the others I feel like that would've look cool on her base skin. I love how bulky she is now compared to Pop/stars where I feel she kinda came in last place in terms of design that's just my opinion tho

When you're talking about all the extras like each girl being separately animated for the same dance moves; it's true most people won't consciously notice unless they're animation, frame-by-frame geeks like us. But the human mind does pick up on these clues SUBconsciously and it enriches what we're seeing at full speed to feel more ALIVE and less mechanical. I don't think the average viewer can put their finger on why they like some animations better than others, but this is one aspect of master craft that makes some animation really stand out and helps us enjoy it more as we watch. KDA is total eye-candy for amateurs and pros alike -I love that we can all gush over the same thing.
I def noticed and it was amazing. I will say that what tipped me off is during the squat each of them come up differently, jaw dropped.

@@izzywasabi , Yeah most likely in terms of production, the team working on this animation video received multiple videos of those dance sequences with variations for reference.
Dancing so actively with a mocap suit on (the suit with the dots, not green one :P) will be such a hustle and will most likely take away from the desired active REALSTIC result, additionally taking more time from the animators on fixing or exaggerating the tracked movements.

@@alecboco8809 I can't say I agree with that because the animation in this music video has a really smooth naturalistic feel to it whereas Popstars is more snappy and anime-like for lack of a better word. Like he says in the video they very intentionally actually move like real people in this. The only thing I'd describe as less fluid and smooth is the editing style which is intentionally more jumpy especially compared to Popstars.
@@hiimchrisj the animation here is TOO smooth. at least when they dance. they're perfectly in sync for most of it, where in pop/stars they each moved in their own way, like actual performers do. ik he tries to say they do that here but i don't see it.
@@hiimchrisj well that's the thing - they do move like real people, and in some places it is actually a lil more snappy (bc people do not always move fluidly), like in the dance bits I've spotted couple moments where their movements felt a bit too sharp (even though realistic).

Y'all are forgetting the other music video had Ahri sitting in a laundry mat. I'm not even criticizing the original I just think people are being extremely nit picky about the new music video.
The only qualm I have animation wise is probably their phoneme animation, the mouths and facial expression gives the impression they don't want to stretch the facial rig too much.

My human brain: There is an interesting discussion to be had that though the sexualization of women has progressed quite dramatically over the past 5 years, the idea that now one of the largest companies is using their most beautiful champions as not only skins but an entire series of cinematic videos warrants some reservation. Additionally, unlike the women artists who do the performance of their own will like WAP (arguably as expectations of women to sell music with sex is still in our minds), K/DA is built entirely from the ground up to be sexy much like vocaloids even though the animators behind the animation have their own will.

Tbf, both are valid. There is a lot you can discuss about how the sexualization of animated characters, specifically woman, is so different from real woman willingly sexualizing themselves, but just going "they're cute and the song is good" is also a fine thing to take
On one hand I wanna argue about the bit where Vocaloids are built from the ground up to be sexy but on the other hand that's absolutely correct for at least half of the entire Vocaloid database.
Because on one hand I don't look at say, Miku or Rin and think "oh yeah this was designed to be sexually appealing" but then you look at Luka and MEIKO and...yeah they _definitely_ were.
In the end I just think it genuinely varies on the kind of thing the individual developers are going for because there are Vocaloids who are children (Kaai Yuki, Oliver, hell I'd even count Miku, Rin, and Len because they're teenagers and generally I find people who sexualize them to be fucking gross) and there are also very clearly adult Vocaloids (MEIKO, KAITO, Luka, etc etc).
Also I promise I'm not actually a weirdo trying to defend the intentional choice of a company giving a disembodied vocal instrument an anime girl aesthetic to sell more of said instrument by exploiting people's horniness for anime girls, I just like Vocaloid. But I do have to protest just a little because in no way should the implication that Fukase is sexy remotely exist. He's a clown at best.

And for the genre in general I meant more specifically "sleek and nice to look at" not necessarily attractive on a sexual level. But that level of nuance would make the joke long in the tooth so I didn't really get into it. Also, my knowledge of vocaloids is quite limited outside of general appearances so I maybe overshot my example a bit.
And I don't think you are a weirdo, (trust me I have my own blindsides and demons) even if you did take the position of playing defense a bit. Another related but also completely separate conversation would be the personal relationship with fictional characters that have real world impacts while still being a corporate product.
Further still, how this differs -if at all- from traditional flesh and blood performers as they too have often been products of companies anyways. Harm mitigation is also a point of discussion. For instance, it may even be preferential to say, a "17 year old" vocaloid pop star fawned over and manufactured versus a real life 17 year old pop star fawned over and manufactured. A lot of wiggle room in this that I don't think there is a real clear answer for

One small thing you didn't mention in the scene you liked that the camera zooms from Akali to Kai'Sa, Kai'sa's biceps were also animated to contract and expand when she flexes her arms, they really went all out with the details in this video.

To me the change in production value is a natural evolution. The camera movements were extremely simple in Pop/Stars because it ultimately was easier and saves money. Whereas these very deliberate controls of the camera are a reflection of much higher production and it's trying to reflect the most popular trends of music videos. Riot knows K/DA is hot shit. I know it, you know it. And K/DA knows it, so that's the natural evolution from their breakout hit.
But did it need it? No. Constant linear camera movement in Pop/Stars had purpose, it looks good. But this mv is pure chaos.
Did you two even watch the video? Both styles are different because they have different content and message,that's it. If the style of the camera movement of popstars and more were to switch places it just wouldn't make sense.

After it was received well, the baddest came out, still good but the video is lacking compared to pop/stars..
Perhaps this was a test to the fans tto receive more feedback, which clearly was taken into consideration as people were not happy about how maddison and jaira were cut to allow more artists to grow, but the two (G)idol girls were still assigned ahiri and alkali..
I guess after all that, testing the waters with pop/stars, then making alterations in bthe baddest for feed back, they felt comfortable raising the budget to give us what we want..
But I guess it could also be because seraphine was announced and released, riot knew that people would buy skins for her going from 4× profit to 5× with the new skins..

I aggre, I feel like the artist for Pop Star were given alot of freedom in what they want to express, however in “More” not so much since they have to be “Realistic”
Akali doesn't technically have her own domain, her red room is inside of Evelynn's domain, or more properly, a domain shared between the two of them since POP/STARS - back then they shared the shadow world/blacklight space (on the train, etc.) and that hasn't changed; in the first shot of Evelynn peeking from behind a statue, she's looking at a red light source - that's Akali's room, Evelynn is giving that little smirk to Akali specifically. She looms over Akali's room (the eyes transition) just as she loomed over the blacklight landscape in POP/STARS.
Similarly, Kai'Sa now resides in Ahri's floating world - if you go back to POP/STARS you will see that the floating world is inside Ahri's Charm.

Honestly a little surprised that he didn't go over the camera losing and searching for focus in the helicopter shot when it zooms in. It's a small detail but it's exactly the kind of thing a pedantic nerd freeze framing the video should notice and think is really freaking cool.
I got that and I loved it. I think this MV it's a incredible piece of work, loved it.

I really like how small of a part Seraphine actually had in the song mainly to signal that shes not actually a new member but rather just a feature on the song
I think this perfectly portrays how K/DA grew. Like in POP/STARS they don't only have simple camera movements, the sets and clothes are simple too. The only time it gets crazy is the last chorus really. So now imagine this, K/DA had their debut and it was a HUGEEEE success. They have 2 full years to get more attention and thus, money. Now they come back with MORE. It feels like it's shot in 4k, the sets and visuals are better, just like the camera movements and clothes.
On a musical perspective, POP/STARS is loud and fast. It's meant to impress you and stay in your head. Now if all the girls are in their 20's, two years make a lot of difference. MORE is around 20bpm slower than POP/STARS which gives it way more control and it seems more powerful. While they were untouchable in POP/STARS, they're Queens now and yes you can meet them but you're not on their level.

You didn't need to drop two 1 hour long detailed analysis videos in one day lmao, there's no rush to cover this stuff so fast man, I was really looking forward to this video tho I was actually trying to imitate the way you analyse the cinematography when first watching the new KDA video xd.
Seriously I really appreciate your effort in doing this super long videos as soon as you can, as an aspiring animator/character designer myself I really get a lot of insight and usefull information when watching your videos, it makes me appreciate a lot more the effort put into these animations. keep up the good work.

About the visuals!! Ok if you look at KPop videos with very hype vibes such as BlackPink (DDU-DDU DDU-DDU) or maybe Seventeen’s CLAP, you can find very similar camera movements in those videos where they circle around the members and highlighting them or have that very handheld feel. I’ve noticed this in a lot of KPop videos as a fan, as music videos usually like to highlight the visuals of the members (hence why they have that as a position in KPop groups, their job is to catch people’s attention with their visuals. Think of BTS’ Taehyung being known as the “guy with mint hair” or “the third guy to the left” during one of the American award shows they went to by people who weren’t familiar with them. Visuals are something that most people can recognize and thus are very drawn into). To paraphrase Emirichu, KPop videos are always very eye catching with their videos and even if you don’t like the music it’s made for, you’ll be unable to look away. Another thing to note about it is who is the “center” during the camera shot. Depending on the line distribution of the song, the camera will most likely focus on that particular member who’s singing, therefore focusing on highlighting that particular members visuals and talents or whatever they’re trying to convey in the story. In the MORE video, you can see how after the bridge, Seraphine was more of the center being highlighted as she joins the other members in the last chorus, highlighting her while dancing and singing. The power of being the center is having the focus on that particular member and this drawing people in with their visuals. Most people are usually drawn to whoever is the center psychologically, and thus having the attention on them. Also, the person who is usually in the center is most likely going to be the most popular member who gets the most lines in usually any song and therefore drawing more people in. This is a marketing tactic as the more popular a member is, the more likely people are going to be drawn to them and they’ll be able to advertise for the group. Also, for the outfits! I love how they coordinated the outfits together because being able to coordinate outfits gives the members a ‘coordinated and together’ vibe. Where not only the dancing is on point for the members, but all of them, even when having different outfits, seem put together well by the vibe of how they look. Visuals are honestly really important (not just the members themselves, but how coordinated the dancing is, the visuals of the video, the camerawork, etc.) because it’s how they get people interested in the music and the members themselves.
When Skyen misnames one of the characters, I feel like a kid who got their art dad into K/DA who's trying to overly analyze it after I showed him their newest video. And y'know what? I'm okay with that.

as a kpop stan, this music video was definitely a lot (i mean a lot) more kpop in its camera work (the mechanical arm, the drone shots, the beauty shots) and visuals (colours, costumes especially, sets, props) compared to pop/stars

Popstars feels unique because of the camera, outfits, and beat.
Baddest feels like a love letter to RUclipsrs because of the lyric video and minimalist animations, and each champion had their own beat and spotlight.
More feels like MLP: Rainbow Rocks Gone Wild because of the camera work, outfits, storytelling, character interactions and beat. Also, friendship.
And then Villan feels like a sensory experience. Like it's about the sensation that you feel personally with the visuals and how its cut.

akali has like tiger motif in this one and in the popstars she has dragon theme going and theyre common icons in some asian myths i think, and i thought that was cool. from what i know a common thing in korea is blue dragon and white tiger and ive seen different variations in other asian myths, idk if its culture exactly but ya kno its cool
It’s essentially a recurring theme in Chinese, Japan, Korean myth, representing the 4 guardians of 4 main cardinal direction. Especially in Korea, they mostly respect the tiger. I think that’s very cool too.

I remember what you said about the choreography animation from Pop/stars so I actually went frame by frame to see if they were in sync or not. As an animation student, that's such a great note.
I get it, why, like, some people think POP-stars is a more of a "bop" and that it slays harder, but, honestly just as a music (and not knowing nothing about-kpop as well) I enjoy it much more. The previous music vid and the song itself, to me, was mostly about the group itself and while MORE has verses about girls too, it still sounds like an actual produced song (if that makes sense?). Hell, it even filmed like an actual clip, so it kind of brought me more joy than a previous one.
And as much as I'm not a fan of kai'sa, she suprisingly was my favorite in MORE.
I love the Dj Sona music playing in the background.

I knew the way the mouths were animated was familiar... I can see parallels in this animation style and the Shooting Star D.va cinematic from Blizzard! Blizzard is listed as one of Axis' clients and I'm so interested in looking at the studio's other work now!

@@Aidyx3D mouths are a focal point for me in 3D animation because you can do great bodies but if the lips, teeth, and way they talk feels off, it just takes away from the realism for me. Nothing creepy, just my own point of view on creativity
Like in this video and the Dva cinematic where there's a lot of conversation, and it's apparent when the mouth not only opens but makes more subtle movements at the ends of words. You don't flap your mouth open and shut like 2D animation does (no offense to them, just an observation, and 2D isn't typically intended for realism). When Ahri does her bg vocal (around 1:09 in the mv), to me it looks like her mouth and jaw don't match how her singing that high note would be irl and is a little off-putting. But in Seraphine's cut around 1:20, her head in profile (the way it moves and the way she sings "stay" specifically) looks extremely believable, especially at the end of the word with the "e" sound and her mouth closes a little before the corner of her mouth drops. Subtle but it just adds so much more to the experience.

yeah I love the uniqueness in everybody's animations... especially with Evelynn, because of how long her nails are, her hand animations are different form everybody's and its a nice touch

I miss 2D effects and paintings texture for the animation, because even with different styles and animations this technique made league cinematics unique to me. I was kinda hyped when saw Akali tiger, but... that was only it. From what I remember they got rid of this technique on "Warriors" and "Awaken" too.
Unfortunately, im not the target audience for KDA so im not really able to fully enjoy the music, but I wasn't expecting the animation to be fully CGI, the girls looks like plastic. :(

@@Exel3nce Well, people that enjoy kpop media in general, as well as the characters, music and this kind of stuff.
Because of my personal beliefs I decided to stay away from pop music industry in general, like american pop, jpop, kpop, etc. As for kpop, I used to listen to it back in 2011-2012. I don't like the way they sell women images as "strong independent women", but most of the girls have no independence at all. The community is extremely toxic too, feels like people treat people as products they own and I hate that.
K/DA is perfect for giving everything that I hate about kpop with no consequences since the characters are not real, so I really cant enjoy that kind of stuff.

For me the dance scenes were amazing. The combo of the camera work and the animation details....just amazing. It felt like a performance. It made me forget that it wasnt real just for a bit. They really gave us MORE. Just wish that translated into the actual game though.
In terms of added personality, I like that Akali does the woah while the other girls kind of pose with the choreo in the back

A big part of Pop music videos is the opportunity of having artist's personalities shine through, we love to watch them perform and play a character. I was waiting for that moment of "oh you better fucking work" but it never came.
Everyone felt particularly robotic for some reason and I can't tell you why, the closest we got was that seraphine and akali elbow bump and every time Evelyn was on camera serving us face but other than that I just didn't connect with it

That's something new from Riot. They know how celebrities are always chasing the camare seeking for attention when they dance and sing but here they are so proud of themselves and the here the camera itself is chasing them seeking their attention. This is so creative idea by Riot, good job to all of them.
I literally cried as you were explaining the nuances of the character design and details in the animation. The verbalization really hit my feelings. In the words or Seraphine: wow...wow.

49:00 is honestly my fav shot from the entire music video! Just the way Evelynn walks towards the camera, wiping something off her mouth and then lowering her head, casting shadows over her eyes with only the demonic yellow iris popping out. It really shows you that there is a darker side to her since well, she is a demon lol and the way her lashers frame her with the top one stabbing the statue‘s head as the statue kneels and submits to her. Man, it‘s so fucking good. And I am so gay

I knew this animation and style looked familiar, it’s becouse of the overwatch dva cinematic. I didnt like this song too much at first but it has grown on me after watching and listening to this song quite a few times this evening.

Tbh, it’s based around kpop m/v and they pulled it off really well. It felt so similar to other kpop m/v s I watch. It’s always usually a hectic encrypted with symbols mess that still looks pretty with deliberate parts where they show the dance.
I think the difference between pop stars & more is very similar to how normal k-pop m/vs, their debut song is very linear and simplistic in every aspect but then once they grow more popular, they get bigger albums, a lightstick and a high budget m/v (sound like what happened to kda with their comeback.)
I'm glad you mentioned Eve grazing that statues back with her diamond studded claws coz it's just the most sensual thing.

not saying I am one myself, but all the details only few people realise in whatever matter is, specially film-making that are immensely overlooked by most viewers really are the exceptional potential of a media or what it can provoke in viewers that not always gets noticed
the message even if minimal if not explicitly explained goes ignored everytime and videos like these are what completes them, which I enjoy immensely to complete my opinion on something, that everyone should account for aswell, also being the best entertainment besides the media itself for me
not only the appreciation he fights for for the people behind the final product of each content he reviews, but the very considered and unceasing message at the end of each video, which absolutely is necessary makes him really feels like how everyone should strive to be or a work that someone had to do for the best of awareness overall I think
