Riot's latest animated music video has dropped, and, yeah you've already seen how catastrophically long this video is going to be. THERE'S A LOT TO TALK ABOUT, ALRIGHT?? I JUST REALLY LIKE 2D ANIMATION.
And boy, what animation it is!

True Damage lore states that Akali was the one who gathered all the members. Her record label gave her the freedom to do side projects. But instead of having the spotlight, the other four members are more on the spotlight. This was Akali's like goal or mission in a way which is to bring other people in the spotlight. It's also the reason why she only has like 12 seconds worth of lines.
@2 Forty to be fair he is the DJ lol
@@riccantor6197 The whole song is his lines :p
Yeah, but thinking outside the lore it feels like they just put akali there because she was a kda fan favorite and her voice actress is really popular on the kpop community, I feel like she doesn't belong
@@MariaLuiza-tp2dc True.... But we talking about the lore here, not the marketing strategy for the skins.
@@MariaLuiza-tp2dc Well, coming from the kpop community, I can tell you that Soyeon is very popular with some, but loathed by others. There were a lot of people who were angry that she was invited back. Also many fans of her were annoyed that she only got 13 seconds so if including Akali was supposed to get a bunch of kpop fans to support the song, they were only kind of successful.
Personally, I adore Soyeon and she is my favorite artist, but I didn't mind her part in this. It was short but powerful and I'm glad that the other characters got to be the focus and Akali could be more of an organizing/mentor-ish force.
Rito: releases 1-3min video
T B Skyen: Oops here we go again.
@@ShadowAngelS2K I would make an impression of that but I can't post audio comments right?
*Oops, i did it again*
You know I thought this video was 25-30mins not over an hour.
Damn I look away for a s and this happens...
Do U mean Riot?
Disney: 2D animation is too hard and childish.
Vizipop and Riot Games: Hold our drawing pad
2D animation is too EXPENSIVE is the explanation, actually. 3D can be produced cheaper, and audiences are more reliably willing to go see 3D animation than 2D for various reasons.
@@TBSkyen I could definitely see that, but it's nice to see artists still use it in unconventional ways.
@@TBSkyen Review Hazbin Hotel! :D

I really agree that this animation deserve better recognition, as a animation stuudent, this is just eye pleasing to watch
I'm super interested in animation and also really love this video. I wish my parents would let me study it but they say you can't make a living as an animator which is bs in my opinion :')

"We only get that brief moment of Yasuo, and then he's gone"
Seems accurate to my actual games
Ayyy just like my dad
Literally all the characters except for ekko are the same for my games
Me in LOR spamming recall in a Yasuo deck:
I’m just imagining the whole animation team from making this song, watching this video, and crying a bit with joy at how someone appreciates their work so damn much
Loved the breakdown analysis. Bonus points if you noticed how when Ekko rewinded time near the end you can see his “graffiti” self traversing everyone’s scenes. Slow it down and he’s even seen vaulting over Yasuo’s turntable.
I accidentally paused on that frame once, and ended up going back to see each one because of how beautiful that one frame was. The references to Ekko’s (and honestly everyone else’s respectively) abilities are amazing, and I really appreciate the attentions to detail so much! The Line Animation did so well with expressing each character’s different personalities and little quirks!
I get the feeling they had Thutmose act out a lot of Ekko's scenes and used a form of rotoscoping or mo-capping then re-drawing to get all those little motions like the off-sync chest tap or subtle weight shifts and hair movements
I was watching the video and thinking that they must have used some live footage to really sell all the expressiveness the characters had. Especially fish eye lens effect, like, come on, how would they do that otherwise
@Someone 1 second? I meant his whole dance
@Someone Yeah that's why I said "then re-drawing"
The end product isn't rotoscope, but it seems pretty clear they had someone perform these moves and drew from that reference.
They definitely use mo-cap, as referenced in Soyeon's behind the scenes for kda
"Really impressive mouth on that kid"
-T B Skyen 2019
The inevitable happened Tb, we all expected this honey, don’t worry we still love you.
Imagine being an animator and having a video of someone on the background gushing about your efforts while you work on something else. People like you make it worth the work.
Jesus dude, I finally paused after realizing I got too sucked into you explaining stuff and took a step back.... It took 15 minutes for us to get through the first 12 seconds... Holy-- And you're so passionate about it, like, I didn't even realize half of the stuff you've even pointed out in the first TWELVE SECONDS, not even just the video, but the techniques, and what everything meant, etc.
Really good stuff, I'm gonna come back to this video, but that's one of the easiest subcribes I've done
I have gushing to do about one particular shot. it's that one of yasuo's setup just after the first chorus that i'm honestly surprised you skipped over. the camera is locked on the blade of the giant fan, making it look like everything else is moving around it, even though it is in fact the only thing in the setting that's actually moving. continues with the whole spatial disorientation feel that ekko's first verse goes for but instead of manipulating gravity now we're manipulating relative positioning and focus. so cool.
also with the yasuo thing i kind of wish they'd gone with bard as the producer since he's silent anyway and his thing is already that he makes cool sounds and they could play off the "masked dj" trope like with daft punk and marshmello.
Frame of reference op
Athicus idk if bard works as well since all of these characters in both true damage and KD/A are human or humanoid. Bard wouldn’t fit too well with the lore of this universe. I think any masked humanoid could have been cooler, like malzhahar
@@thehoodlen Bard is humanoid, he's just chubby wdym
This. I was shocked he skipped over it with how much he was talking about the movements of the camera elsewhere because that was one of the most impressive parts for me. The fan spinning would be normal but they go so extra and make the entire room rotate instead while the fan stays put. He also commented on QiQi's appearance as if they were just panning the shot up her body when it is so much more. They actually make the position of the camera rotate to the right around her while panning up which is why the lighting on her changes so drastically and the background moves from left to right.
Yassuo more popular and will sell more tho
Can we just appreciate how Yasuo is in a wind tunnel
Also I might be in the minority but I like his design, it's simple and it's what it should be, he stays kinda in the background and makes the music, he's not a big "star" like the others, I wouldn't really see him with something more complex
And don't forget that in the music universe Yasuo is a famous producer that everyone respects. Thats why Akali goes to him.
yeah he's really cool but i would have liked a rap
Dude ive fallen completely in love with Yasuo's design fpr this. Yeah it doesnt really match his in game characterization and personality but i love the silent back bone dj vibe he has. His thing is his simplicity in his design.
Still kinda upset he got so many skins he didn't deserve
Edit : Typo

yessss i'm never getting tired of your "gushing on animation" videos (partly because I actually gushed over this animated video for the lasts 3 hours)
From what I've understood of this video Riot animators were very much EXTRA with this video, and I think that matches the hip-hop/rap vibe of the song.
Not Riot animators, they hired a different animation studio. Riot only dealt with the music and character designs.
Local man goes crazy over animated mouth flaps
You can see what riot did but i have a recording of what happend

Does Akali have it in her contract that she gets to be in every music group now? Is being a ninja just her side gig, and she's actually a professional singer?
Well went rogue so she had to do something to pay the bills.
she also has a part time job as a sashimi master LOL
The skins lines are kind or "What would they be doing if/they aren't on SR
The little movements ekkos foot makes at the beginning when he's sitting on the stairs. The attention to detail is insane.
"Why do i need to be good at physics for animation?"
"Well, you'll know..."
Animator here, here's the major secret behind the animation.
The animation was animated with 3D models
Then on top of the 3D animated renders,
there's these things called vectors,
which means instead of pixels,
it uses programmed points and connects them
to make the art
Almost like rotoscope, but 3D models and
not live action to use as reference.
Then they use something called interpolation
to generate the inbetweens with the poses
made with the vector layer
Paperman (the intro to Wreck it Ralf)
uses this method if you guys wanna see
what it looks like when they use more frames on
ones.
BLENDER GreasePencil 2.8 is the best program for this
that's available for free and to the public.
Toonboom and Moho12 do this too but those are paid.
Hope this helps anyone with questions
Ahhh my weekly dose of hour-long skyen videos.
Man I wish you’d gone through Ekko’s rewind frame by frame. They did some fun stuff with that part.
Those animations makes me go nuts
I don't know jack ol' shit about animation but I have so much fun watching these kinds of videos because I know the person behind it is having so much fun making them.
Never change bro.
It is funny how in every reaction I saw up until now every one (no artists) says "That animation is great!".
And here we hear why that is exactly! Good Video!
they were on Piltover at the very start at the game
in the end, when they bugs out of screen and disappear, they come to Paris
it's like they were on the game world till the very end, when them all come to our world to their biggest show
the 'FERROS security' building referes to Camille Ferro, who lives in there
this is why the start is so mysterious about where they were, but in the end they were in Paris and makes no sense
ah, and note at the top left on the first shot, that Qiyana is wearing a Louis Vuitton thing
42:00 minutes. I really love how her legs are initially positioned side by side with a spinning background while eventually panning up to her frontal image. It gives the illusion that the character is turning without hardly doing anything and I love it.
In defence of yasuo's desgine and role in the music video is that he's the DJ not the producer while the other four are singing he's the one providing the music emphasizing the others (ekko especially) as he keeps glitching in to the others so I feel at least while he moves the least what he dose do holds a little more weight, as for his character desgin it is a little boring but again he's the DJ aka the background guy while the others make a spectacal of themselves.
Love the breakdown keep doing more
One thing to take into consideration is the fact of just how inspired he seems to be by Alan Walker, straight down to the colors in his design. In a close up shot on Yas' hand, there's even a Walker logo muted into the black paint.
Even the aesthetic of the environment kinda feels like a direct reference to him in the sense that it has the same feel that Walker's early music videos tended to have.
So, I can understand it may be boring, but the homage they pay to one of my personal favorite artists is actually incredible. (Remember, Walker was also responsible for the remix of Legends Never Die, so he even has connections and REASON to be referenced by Riot.)
I thought yas looked like an underground DJ
You cab even see alan walkers's logo in 4:23
The moment i saw the music video i thought "T B Skyen is going to make a hour long video on this and i'm going to watch the shit out of that."

You've read my mind and I didn't even know I felt that way. Like, I thought a lot about 'why I like this kind of animation or that kind os animation or any kind of animation' but for some reason, this never really came to my mind, yet when you said it, I just felt like screaming "Y E S" at the top of my lungs.
Man, you're great.
When you said that 3D animation features choose animals because they're easier to animate I got some heavy flashbacks fo that christian movie with the lion oh god someone save me that thing was hell
no...nooooooooooo
I saw someone react to the movie you're talking about, so I just started laughing like crazy. 😂😂
The "Nooo. Nooooo!" part became a running gag (in other vids by the same reactor). 😂
Yasuo's trench coat in-game makes him look like a dude with a midlife crisis and anime addiction
I mean you're correct with the anime addiction. The True Damage artworks from EU League exactly shows him reading Star Guardian and wearing a Star Guardian jacket.
You mean like a yasuo main?

YES
@@Retributionify Always check the Descripsion box for these stuff. they done so many good shit and have a podcast about animation on their sound could so check that out too. :)
I really appreciate that they went 2D with this one. Anything to make sure it never dies off. Now in the regards song and the video....it's a song that has been sung a thousand times by 30 similar groups. And Senna's voice should be deeper and raspier, the singing voice doesn't match up, no disrespect to Ms. Palmer. As the video, it was a lot of posing and "frontin'" shots which is typical for music videos these days , but I wished they'd go a little more out of the box.
Of course the second half of the video was my favorite, not just because of the second rap, which I prefered. It was actually thrilling and intimidating. I know alot of people said "Spider-verse" but I feel that reference is just the most recent in their mind where as kinetic animation like this has been developing and advancing like this for the past few decades.
With multiple re-watches the cliches became more apparent, and kinda silly. If it was a better song , I would think differently but hopefully there's another go around so they can expand from here.
I think its charming, to me it felt like a rookie group just starting off, so the cliché song makes sense to me. I gotta agree on Senna's voice tho, I expected her to sound a little more distinct, especially from Quiyana.
Ye the song seemed too generic and it's because the team was more accustomed to this style while in kda the team tried to make a kpop song with no experience in hearing kpop so the song came out better than giants. They tried to make it cooler with the second rap breakdown but I think it broke the little cohesion the song had even tho it was a good rap
@@nicu227 " too generic" this song is very unorthodox to the usual rap. It makes me cringe when people who dont really have experience in music call something rare or different generic.
Ok so, first off, the main melody for ekkos first verse is DRUMS. Not many rap songs do that, especially the bass type, very deep and rough.
Sennas part, the reason why it doesn't stand out is because its alone, its not accompanied or even multiplied. Its just her voice, its nice and simple, which rap tends not to be, it tends to mash a lot together. Ill agree that qiyanas part is cliche but the drums and bass is a bit different.
The main reason why you like the second part more is because its an extended part of qiyanas and sennas part. Its complementary to the first part. Thats the point.
Uh, where do I start with ekkos part. Same drums and bass but they get warped around and reversed(because ekko, duh) reverb on ekkos voice and his voice getting reserved at times. Near the end of his second verse the song actually reverses.
In short, its not groundbreaking or brilliant, its just a good song, definelty not generic entirely
"He lands, he lectures, he leaves."
1:01:00
I don't know why but that quote sounded kind of dope. XD
I like how at 51:30 when Akali is in selfie mode, when she gets close to the camera, she goes out of focus because she's moving faster than the camera can auto focus. Subtle but nice trick
I just noticed when the girl was first going down the escalator one of the background shots behind her was a screenshot of the Arcane animation which was really interesting
I'm sure you noticed this but after echo's second verse when everything rewinds back to senna, it shows that every time he's been on screen that he was actually already at the end point of that verse and went back through up to the beginning of the first hook when he left the stairs while senna was singing. The glitch effect through that whole scene is him looking back at every moment that he was on screen before collecting everyone. they moved the effect in such a way that is looks like the infinity symbol or "lemniscate" while in full motion. Brilliant and as you've stated so fucking extra.
I caught two hip hop references,
"Royalty up in my veins" seems to be a pretty direct reference to Kendrick Lamar's DNA.
And the entire final section with Ekko is a pretty good JID impression.
also in the bit where it goes black and the song switches the character matches the real artiest (duckwrth) mannerisms and posture for that whole verse then is goes back to his normal mannerisms and posture when that bit ends
I absolutely love hearing you gush about all the amazing details in the animation of this video, srsly i could listen to you for another hour because it really is THAT cool. It's those little details and the craft and care and passion that made me fall in love with animation in the first place. Great work! looking forward to more vids like this
I think its kind of interesting that Akali is in two groups. Also the leaked Senna woop woop
The lore is that kda happened then akali left kda and formed a new band called true damage. It is actually a very common thing in kpop. bands break up and a member forms a new band with a new leader (this cause ahri was the leader of kda and now ekko is the leader of true damage). Once the new band is formed the old member (akali) leaves and it creates a "new generation" of groups. It is a very smart move for riot to make. you can make more music skins and keep the flow going of having an evolving world and lore
Alexander Serrano I’m not sure Akali actually left K/DA. It’s also pretty common in k-pop to have side groups which band members can be a part of while still being part of the original. Now I haven’t finished reading the lore page, but I’m assuming this is what they intended on. But hey if I’m wrong, I’m wrong 🤷♀️
@@alexanderserrano9596 She didn't leave K/DA, she just went out to try and find talent and boom True Damage was born
16:34 That's a sick rhyme
i have been waiting for this since the music video came out
Tbh I'm glad that Soyeon/Akali is in this because that provided some popularity but it still deserves so much more since it isn't K/DA. The mv is insane.
This video just had me shaking my head in disbelief the entire time.
I thought everything was 3D animation again. Bro what.
Like it's so perfect that I just simply expected it to be. I'll never understand how 2D animation can exist.
If I worked in Animation for Riot and I would be so happy everytime Skyen posts because the way he gushes about super tiny details warms my heart tbh.
Honestly as someone who notices the beat most of all, especially at first viewing, I love Yasuo's design as well as his animation and his sort of "shtick". As you said the tiny subtle movements are some of the most important and Yasuo's all about that. He seems to be portrayed as this chill, calm guy that's just there to make sick music, not be in the foreground of the band or crew or whatever and the complexity of the beat in addition to how nicely it fits to the rest of the group (I dunno, pick one of the terms heh) that's all he's about but with the gesture at the end (with the fish-eye lense effect) they're showing him like he means business.
In akalis first shot you can see the Arcane poster in the background, insane detail I just noticed it when you paused it
"If you wanna know about the hip hop references ask someone who knows not me"
And here I'm like "But Rap Critic hasn't made a video on this D:"

I wanted to watch this video because I’m currently obsessed with this music video, and I went from “this video’s an hour?!” to “this video’s only an hour?!”
What I think is amazing about this video is that im not a huge fan of rap or hip hop. But like with KDA so many people reacted to it, so watching these reactions of people who know and love the genre helped me understand why they thought it was so good. So this song turned into my liking the chorus only to liking and appreciating everything they did in this.
Long story short they opened up a whole avenue of music that I normally dont listen to but ended up loving in this song start to finish.
i always enjoy seeing people who know about the behind the scenes whether how the music is made or how the shot is animated
one section you didnt go over that i absolutely love is when ekko rewinds the video. everything that happens in that brief second is just incredible

I was looking for someone who sees how impressive and amazing the animation is, and I found you! The original video had me in shock, as a concept artist that studies with friends in animations and I tried some 2D animations in the past and its SO HARD and the whole video is just.. amazingly amazing. The whole shifting and moving and dynamic camera movement and character movement and just ahhh its amazing I love it. They took the KDA animation and camera work and bumped it to 10000 with this one, honestly.
42:00 the pan up is also rotating as she is static. Really amazing work
I dont know anything about animation, I simply just doodle (not even good doodles, just your average "im bored" and somehow made something decent) yet I understand the hard work to an extend. hearing and "seeing" praise the most suddle details and all, has made me appreciate the animation even more (which I already was xD).

it's been a while I haven't watched your animation analysis. It's so amazing, especially if it's something you enjoy
Bonus points for cheering me up to animate even more - I have been in a rut lately :(
The animators must have loved this project. Insanely high budget for a 3:30 short. They had free rein to do what they always wanted but had to cut back down due to time management.
I'm late as hell but I'm sure someone has pointed out by now that Yasuo is supposed to be their DJ, so he's not participating directly in the performance other than moving the track along. I'm pretty sure the thing he's touching throughout the entire thing is a sound board/launch pad that he's using to mix the music live. When you said that it looks like he's moving the song alone, he probably is actually because he's mixing it live. He can't wear gaudy clothing because he would stand out in the background since he's just supposed to be a background character on the group. Great analysis and I loved your insight onto all the different shots and motivations. Great watch and have a good one.
20 minutes and still in awe at the details of the first 20 seconds.
@ 21:06 I noticed on the post near Ekko's left (to us) hand is an Akali K.D.A insignia. I think that's dope considering this true damage group was put together by Akali. You have to pause quick to see it but its there
Yasuo is repreasenting type of japanes street wear so that is his thing
I was going through some reaction to this music video and just found yours. And bruh, I gotta say- I just love you commentary of this video. I really like how you mentioned the expressions and the movements of the characters. Especially when you talked about ekko. As an amateur artist, I just like the style, the colors, the design, and the background. But when you talked about the animated motions, I've just noticed about the little details in the animation and your take is really great. Really awesome video, man! 👍👍👍😎
Wow an hour went by like 15 minutes. I loved it so much. soooo fun to see a person getting so excited about animation. I've noticed so many references and details in the backgrounds and thanks to you all the neat things about the way it's animated. you really don't see all of this while watching at the normal speed and gosh I feel like I've been missing out till now. this was so interesting! i'd watch it if it was even longer tbh. thank you for making this!!

Great video dude!,
I loved the video and wanted to drool at it for an hour and only you did exactly what I wanted.
Definately subscribing.
Great analysis!
Imagine having music being praised by music producers *and* having animation being praised by animators. Damn.
I just noticed the akali tag in the background of the first scene with ekko on the pillar. It's the big grin she had on her face mask.
Cool vid just one thing
In the start they showed different architecture to represent players from different regions competing to play in the worlds championship , they all come together at Paris for final where the characters could essentially represent the different regions.
58:34 One thing that this video does not show is that at this point (ekko's second verse) the music reverses and rewinds showcasing ekko's time reversal powers...
which is INSANE both on a technical and artistic level. To normal people it sounds weird but once you understand it fits perfectly.
I guess it reminds us that a music video is a visual, aural and emotional product and focusing on only 1 or 2 aspects leads to missed details.
P.s. I don't want to sound too harsh on Skyen, his visual analysis is the best on RUclips and nothing I said takes away the worth of his analysis but I just wanted to point out that Ekko's second verse was supposed to be the centerpiece of this music video and it's such a waste that he missed the forest by focusing on the trees. I get that the video was running long and he did mention the strobing effect of the fans but it's just frustrating that he missed the whole time reversal sequence. Dude it's like the centerpiece, like you say there's not much to discuss but you didn't mention that the colour palette is based on blacklight effects and as a result the entire colour palette us reversed, stuff that is very easy to miss but which is clearly hinted at the start of the animation when the fan blades reverse over the neon spray of Ekko or the entire snap back at 1:02:52.
