Lou Reed's MANY TRIbute albums to music have followed in the footsteps of The Velvet Underground. In the opinion of Bill Bentley, a writer living in Texas who was a member of Sterling Morrison's band, a US publicist for Reed from 1988 to 2004, and a producer of tribute albums to Roky Erickson, Skip Spence, and Doug Sahm, he was not. He has compiled twelve covers for The Power Of The Heart, eleven of them are devoted to the great man's solo career. Because of Lou, "I was missing," says Bentley. His spirit was something I was missing. I decided to start a record.
The Afghan Whigs, Rosanne Cash, Lucinda Williams, Rickie Lee Jones, Angel Olsen, Bobby Rush, and, last but not least, Keith Richards, who gives a weathered version of "I'm Waiting For The Man," the only VU cover, as an homage. Forget about saying no to Keith, says Bentley. "Yet it makes sense, because they were actually quite close in age."
