Lou was weary of the way Steve Sesnick managed the band and that is the reason why he left. He probably thought he’d quite the music industry for good at that point in time. Doug has been blamed for the VU last album Squeeze, but Sesnick is the one, who hoodwinked him into doing that album. It is not Doug’s fault.

It would've been interesting to mention Reed's rivalry with Frank Zappa, and how they traded barbs and insults in the press, yet Reed later inducted Zappa into the RnR Hall of Fame, speaking of him in the highest regard.
Both men were undeniably original, influential artists beyond the number of records that they sold while active in the industry. Frank was the superior musician.
I read an interview with Lou from the late 60s where he said Zappa was the most pretentious, boring excuse for musician that existed. Hhhaha. Lou had litle good to say about any of his contemporaries except the Beatles who he gushed over like a schoolboy. :)

I found a copy of The Velvet Underground & Nico's album along with Terry Reid's Seed of Memory and John Coltrane's Giant Steps in trash can in 1979. I still have those LPs.

I always loved both Lou Reed and John Cale. Sadly they were both regarded as difficult people so their break up seemed predictiable. I was told by someone who had worked with John Cale that he was very aloof and the whole experience was unpleasant. It is sad that hardly anyone today even knows who they were despite their considerable influence.
I can believe that John Cale was hard to work with especially post VU, he was heavily fuelled by cocaine most of the time and it probably affected his temperament. I've seen some of his interviews from around the late seventies early eighties and he was very rude and intimidating to the journalist who was interviewing him.
Picture at 2:23 is from the Yule lineup and not the Cale lineup. Sloppy editing. And as for the record, Cale wasn't just only a classically trained viola player, but a classically trained multi instrumentalist. The first instrument he learned aged six was the piano.
Lou wasn't brought up in Queens..his family story was the classic East European Jewish one of get to NYC with little more than your life..start off in Brooklyn and end up upper-middle class on Long Island...
