The harnesses have sensors on them which detect if a rider's harness is not latched properly. Which could result in the rider slipping out or the harness coming undone when the rider is upside down. if the harness is not latched properly the sensor sends a signal to the computer which controls the ride to apply the emergency breaks which brings the ride to a sudden stop. When this happens all they usually do is go round and press on the harnesses to make sure they are all securely fastened and restart the ride.
^ Yeah this is likely the real reason for this stoppage. I operated this ride for a few years and it happened a fair bit. Completely safe, as there are two restraints, each have multiple backups, but in an abundance of caution, the ride stops if it is not happy that a restraint is fully closed. You might ask, "Well why did the ride start moving if it wasn't closed?". Well when the ride was stationary, the sensor was saying it was closed. When the weight shifted due to the ride moving, it allowed the harness to move a few millimetres, but that's enough for the ride to think the restraint isn't closed, so it stops.

From a rides operator (at Camelot theme park, not Alton towers) let me tell you what's going on. The ride is prone to faults, in the end that's why they got rid of the ride, but in this circumstance, you would have to press some kind of reset button over and over until the ride was in a position where guests can be removed. At no points are an guests at risk of anything. Hear them loud clicking noises when it stops? They're called locking pins. They are around 14 inches thick (sometimes thicker depending on the ride) and the noise you hear is them clicking into place. If anyone is in danger the ride will NOT let these be removed incase of further danger. In this case, the riders were removed from the ride, likely the issue was found and the electrics of the ride were reset so it'd be able to open soon, but it's important for all nervous riders to know, the safety systems were in place, the rides operator was in charge at all times and you were ok. Trust us. No harm will come to you while we are under control. (Those wishing to complain about the smiler, that wasn't down to a rides operator, that was the maintenance team and a new style of maintence which the team weren't used to.).
@PlaneCrazyTutorials not the ripsaw no, the flume was the one removed to make way for the wicker Man, ripsaw was next to air and nemesis, last thing I saw the space was being used as some sort of basket ball throwing game.
I was in the queue for this when it broke down. However they still opened it again once they did a few test runs to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. I still went on it tho 😐
I got stuck on I think it was rat raft at Gullivers World- as the ride was about to stop to change directions it stopped all together, leaving us all stuck at the top of the ride. About 20 minutes later they got it swinging but we wasn’t allowed off the ride yet. They managed to get it working and said after the next spin they would be able to stop the ride, meaning we had to go to the top again. They spun the ride back to the top and it got jammed again, sat there for another half an hour while they got some people in to fix it. Ended up evacuating the ride and very slowly lowering it. The lowering process took about 20 minutes. So we were stuck for about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Rides like these are very unreliable
Ripsaw was a cool ride....The way it groaned and squeaked and dumped air. Very characterful. Kinda reminds me of those old 1980's buses that had zero refinement when you rode in them. And you could have just as much fun watching the riders getting soaked, than actually riding it yourself.
But surely it's a good thing that there is a safety feature that means it doesn't work if the harness has not been pulled down hard enough... at least they stopped it before serious damage was caused... look at the smiler... not everyone is so lucky x
It's good that the ride shut down it didn't go any further. It was in the news here where a teenager died from a free fall ride and the harness wasn't secure enough because he was too big for the ride. I wished the ride stopped like this so he would still be alive now
Ripsaw was closed in the 2015 season due to the park's long-term plan. It was replaced by Forbidden Sweep, a small carnival game, for the 2016 season and then was replaced by the temporary ride, Funk 'n' Fly.
We used to have a ride like this in the states. More specifically it was called the thunder hawk and was located in Kansas City, mo. The water thrown at you made you feel like you were being waterboarded. I’m guessing a bunch of guests complained and that’s why they took the water feature out. That’s what happened to WOF in Kansas City area. After many years of the ride operating without the water feature they still took the ride down.
Was there testing going on here? Because throughout the slow, measured speeds and the ride operator saying "And again" in-between, it appears some issue is being sorted.
Something much worse happened on RAMESES REVENGE and I have experienced it aswell as a few other times. It was human error no matter what the system stopped the ride when the empty car stopped, but the operator over run the governing computer and I'm sure he's been sacked. I feel much sympathy for those involved, but ride accidents are very rare and your much likely to be involved in an accident on the way to the park, likely because humans can easily make errors in cars and rides use governing computers that as far as I know have never caused a ride accident in history of rides
