The way the gentleman with the glasses pronounces Romaika (roh-mah-ee-ka) just tickles me, as it seems that the Pontic dialect has retained certain pronunciations from Ancient Greek. This, along with Calabrian Greek, are my favorite Greek dialects spoken outside of Greece.

It’s evident that Romaiika isn’t their first language, they can barely communicate in Romaiika.

    • @i.k.8868
      @i.k.8868 2 года назад +13

@@olbiomoiros It is their first language, but as soon as they entered the school system, their primary language of preference became Turkish, probably from age 7 or 8 they would then also choose Turkish to start a conversation with their parents (at that time usage of Romeika in schools was heavily discouraged). While their parents would continue conversing in Romeika, and address them in Romeika, they would increasingly answer in Turkish. The people interviewed here all have children, who grew up speaking Turkish as their first language, but who are still exposed to Romeika daily or weekly (depending on the family). While Romeika was practically outlawed by primary school teachers in the region for some decades in the late 20th century, in recent times teachers have become more accepting of its usage, and may even encourage students to learn the language. It is unfortunate that no official education program has been developed, or even been considered. Hopefully this will change in the future, as Turkey gets a more democratic government.

Their dialect is actually more "purely" Greek, closer to Ancient Greek rather than the Neohellenic, but somehow they are proud Turks. That's what happens when nation equals religion. Non-Greek speaking (originally) people in Greece (e.g. Arvanites or Slavs of Macedonia) are considered Greeks because they are Orthodox but these people not because they are Muslim. They are ancestors of converts. The only reason they survived the genocide is their Islamic faith. Other than that, the Pontic Greek dialect exists in Greece, and its people have been using far more than in its homeland Pontus. They are not Greek because once you convert, you are a Turk (that’s how it was in the Ottoman Empire). They have been Turks for decades or hundreds of years. Not only were their ancestors traitors, but so are they being the most nationalistic Turks, supporting Erdogan who has been constantly threatening Greece and making racist remarks. They also idolise Mustafa Kemal who is responsible for the genocide of Pontic Greeks.

@@olbiomoiros You don't know anything of Trabzon history. These were also the people that in rural communities actively protected the local Armenian population in 1915, that held back the Russian invaders in 1916, that protected the local Greek Orthodox population until the forced population exchange in 1923 (all those years Christians were living peacefully in many majority Muslim villages of the Of region), and even the wider Trabzon Muslim population protested the nationalist policies of the Kemalists during and after the war. The first Turkish opposition party was lead by Muslim politicians from the Trebizond region. They protested violence against Greeks, supported recognition of the ethnic diversity of the new Turkish republic, wanted powers stripped from Mustafa Kemal, and many of them were killed for their politics. A bit of respect please. It is true a majority of the people from these regions vote for conservative parties, but there has always been a very vocal and prominent opposition, and not all votes for a specific party have a clear meaning when you talk about ethnicity... For most of the 20th century Turkey was under control of the Kemalists, and in their media they called our community outright traitors, "fake turks", "crypto chistians", etc. What do you think the effect is of such pressure on a tiny minority?

With all due respect, while many Pontic Greeks were murdered, some militias also killed innocent Turkish civilians in return. The number of '350.000 Pontic Greeks who died in the genocide' isn't realistic as it is much higher than the entire Greek Orthodox community of Trebizond Province (official numbers indicate 250.000 Greek Orthodox in 1914). And they were certainly not all exterminated! Many tens of thousands died, perhaps even 100.000, but not 100%. Rather 20-30%, and in the eastern Black Sea region much less. In many districts east of Trabzon (and in the city itself), there were no hostilities between Greeks and Muslims, and the local Christians only had to leave in 1923 on the order of the Greek and Turkish state. They used to live peacefully together, as is explained in the museum of the village Nea Trapezounta, where the easternmost Pontic Greeks (form the Of-valley) migrated to.

Don't forget that what is now Turkey was part of the Byzantine Empire, as a result there were (in 1922) more Greeks in Turkey than Turks in Greece.
Also, the population exchange was based on religion and NOT ethnic origins!
Therefore, Greeks remained in Turkey and Turks remained in Greece, In particular the Thrace region of North Greece is full of muslim Turks
In other words, if you were a christian in relegion (both Greek or Turk) you moved to Greece from Turkey, and the inverse from Greece to Turkey if you were muslim.
The 'Turk-DNA project' which was initiated to prove that the Turks were pure (100%) of Turkish origin proved the exact oposite.
The Turk-DNA project was canceled as the results were not so positive for national unity !
The Turks are a mixed-race group of Iranians Syrians, Armenians, Sebians, Bulgarians, Kurds and Greeks and even some Russians and Ukranians.
For example, The Kurds are not of Turkish origin and want to have their own country some day !

That is simply not true. The assimilation process began with the Turkish Republic in 1923, where even other minorities like Kurds, Armenians, Arabs etc. had to be "turkified". The conversion had other roots, as with converting to Islam, the folk would have more opportunities during the ottoman era. So your comment indeed is irrational, not to forget that in Greece nearly all the mosques and synagogues built during the ottoman era were destroyed or left to demolition.

Pontus is very unique. It's correct name is Lazica. Both "Turks" and "Greeks" from Pontus are assimiliated Lazes. Same goes for Hemshins who are Armenian speaking Lazes. It doesn't matter if they speak Laz, Greek, Armenian or Turkish, they have been called Lazes by the rest of Anatolia for centuries and this phenomenom still persists to this day. It is probably the one region in the region which has preserved its genetic profile for thousands of years and still does, unlike Greece or Anatolia whose native populations have been dilluted with Turks, Slavs and Albanians. On the cover it may look like things changed, but neither the "Greek Colonies" or "Turkish Settlers" have had any genetic impact on the population.
While it is very interesting and it might be sad that Romeika is dying in Turkey, one has to realize that the Pontic Muslims has a lot more to gain from embracing a Muslim and Turkish identity rather than a Greek one (or even their original one Laz before Hellenization by the Orthodox Church). Pontic Muslims are the dominant group in trade and government in Turkey and also have a high group cohesion, even though they have fully embraced a Turkish identity. The cultural diffrence between Trabzon and the rest of the Turkey is very sharp. I know the same diffrence exists in Greece, where Pontic Greeks are negatively prejudiced as short-tempered and aggressive (usually pontic greeks beat the greek kids in schools). Diffrence is Pontic Greeks don't have a their own cities or territories in Greece and will probably vanish in Greece before the 22nd century. In Turkey they still live in their ancestral homelands and will probably keep their genetic and cultural profile in-tact for hundred of years to come.
For Pontian Greeks that actually care about preserving their culture, you only shot at this is moving back to Turkey.

The Treaty of Lausanne of 1923 between Greece and Turkey provided for the exchange of population. The Greeks would go to Greece and the Turks would go to Turkey. The Greek state lied and filled the ships with Albanian Muslims, considering them Turks only because they were Muslims, even though they did not know a word of Turkish. They forced them to their lands of thousands of years and took them to the desert plains of Anatolia. While the Pontiac population was exiled to Greece just because they were Orthodox, even though they did not know a word of Greek.
