For the onions, put less in the pot and they will grow bigger. They’re small because they didn’t have room to grow. Thanks for sharing your garden.

Loved it... Though in my country we never wash onions immediately after harvest. We sun dry the onions with peels. And then remove the soil on the surface. This ensures their long age. And whenever we need to use them.. We wash them. 🙃💗

I love container gardening, it’s so satisfying to pick literally the fruits of your labor lol. As for the onions I use deep pots and I add three buds per pot, good potting soil with pebbles at the bottom for drainage. Great garden!!!!

We use our chillies to make - chutney/pickle, dried chilli, chilli powder, sauce/paste, sometimes if they aren’t so hot we stuff them with mince and fry them.

Wonderful Balcony Garden👍 If you really want to grow huge onions, buy seeds and sprinkle them in a small cup or I use the mushroom container I recycle from the grocery store. When they grow to about 6-8 inches high. Separate them. They are tough plants and can easily be separated. Then plant them in your planter. I guarantee you’ll get twice the size of what you harvested from growing sets. Its cheaper too😉👌🏼 Happy gardening!

You make me so excited about my little balcony garden 😭
    I'm growing:
    Cilantro
    Basil
    Chives
    Strawberries
    Tomatoes
    Two types of Peppers
    Two types of beans
    Squash
    Cucumber
    Corn
And they're actually doing really well and growing quickly
Next year I plan on adding potatoes and broccoli, I also want to add more fruits in but I'll have to see what's the best potted fruits to grow. I also don't won't to go crazy having a lot of plants to worry about, but I can't wait til I buy a house so I can have a backyard and really go crazy and add fruit trees to the yard.

    Here's my tip..
Onions actually don't grow under the soil.they grow on top of it. So when you plant the seedlings only plant the roots, dont plant the bulb under the soil. They might lean over but it's fine.

Amazing hobby, lovely. You can finely chop the chillis and slowly cook them together with lots of finely chopped garlic and onions. You can use vegetable oil. Cook over low fire until they are all nice and mushy. Season to taste. Can use them as topping for steamed dumplings together with toasted garlic plus lime juice and soy sauce. Yumm

I had small onions last year. When I tried to find out why, I discovered there are different onions for northern states and southern. I'm in Pennsylvania and should grow "long day" type. It's about hours of daylight. Definitely google it. Your tomatoes look beautiful!
I grew ancho pablano peppers last year and WOW! Loaded plants. I think that's normal for this pepper and it's pretty mild with a little heat. Really nice pepper.
My husband dries a lot of the hot peppers and turns them into powder.
Garlic is easy, I grow it every year.

    • @AllAboutAnika
      @AllAboutAnika  3 года назад +2

Wow you sound like you have an amazing garden! I’ll have to look into growing these specific types of onions. Thanks for the tip! I also might look into garlic as that would be a great crop to grow since I cook with it almost every day! 😊

I remember you said you fertilize every 2 weeks from the other videos. It's great for tomatoes but it's too much for onions as they'll be growing more big green tops rather than the bulb. Also harvest when the soil and tops are completely dry so it doesn't rot in storage. My fav tomatoes are Green Zebra, Marvel Striped and Beefsteak, I'm planning to grow some capsicum and chocolate reapers on my balcony :D

Lovely garden lady, beautiful garden and sweet harvest! What a great job you are doing in encouraging folks to grow food in whatever size space we have.🙂
I'm a Central Texas gardener. I think the red pepper you tried was a fully ripe jalapeno. You can eat them green or red. The hotter and dryer the weather the hotter the jalapenos on the plant.
Two recipes you might look up are Armadillo Eggs and Cowboy Candy.🙂
On the onions...you can grow them to a nice size in a pot. Don't crowd them or thin them out by eating smaller ones through the growing season. Also give them the sunnies spot in your beautiful garden. Onions like it hot. Wishing you a super gardening year!🙂

My neighbour taught me to brush the soil away from the bulb (once it starts to bulb) not to burry them all the way. He also said to put them in a tiny trench but from what I learned once you water the trench falls so it’s kind of messy to keep up with. You can also try to save those tiny onions and plant them next year!

A tip for your peppers you can over winter them and they will grow back the next year and give you more peppers then the first year. I have serval that are 3 years plus. I’m not for sure how cold the uk gets but you can bring them in if roots will freeze. But you do want them to get cold enough to kill the leaves. Then in spring after they start regrowing just clip off last years dead branches.

Not sure on the weight, but you can grow them through to the 2nd year, cut off the flower stalk and they may surprise you how large they get. I had a bunch of missed onions (tiny ones) that later tried to flower and then grew much larger than other onions I have grown.

Loosen the soil around the onions during growth. This will allow room for onions to expand. Also hang onions and allow them to dry before rinsing and cutting off tops

Make Jalapeno poppers, slice the peppers down the middle clean out the seeds and guts, stuff them with a mixture cream cheese and shredded cheddar cheese, then wrap them in bacon and bake till the bacon gets crispy, take to a party everyone will love them. I love it!!! As for the size only do one row in that planter and see if you get bigger onions they need room to widen. Also FYI if you leave the outer papery skin on the onion and just brush off the dirt and then let it dry (look up onion curing) they will last a lot longer. as soon as you rip the outer layer off they won't last as long.

Of course this is late but first someone mentioned you have to figure out whether you need long day or short day onions for your area they need a lot of sunlight hours per day. Also don’t plant so thickly as they are fighting for food and resources then you should get much larger onions. I’m also growing onions this year some from
Seed and some from small onion starts. Not sure which you did but I suggest seeds because starts don’t always bulb up since they are a biennial crop, awesome
    Tomatoe crop. How fun!

I make some dried tomatoes and then put the, in oil, I also make some into powder to add to things that I am cooking or to make tomato paste. The chillies you can do the same with. Also onions etc. I also make dinner packs with the dehydrated veggies 😊. Well done. This is very inspiring

I learned from therusticgarden that bury only the roots of the onion transplants so the onion bulb will grow above ground giving it plenty space to grow big. Nonetheless, awesome harvest and impressive garden.

Great video :) my brother lives in apartment and I want to prepare for him starter "pack" for balcony garden, so he can eat his own fresh vegetables. My advice regarding to onions - they need more space to grow them bigger - I mean space between them, as they are planted too densely..you can have space between them approx. as big as golf ball I think, so they have enough space :) when do you want to plant more densely, I recommend to you plant leeks instead of onions for a bigger harvest

It’s a lot of tomato. You can freeze them for future use to preserve the and don’t get rotten.
