I remember being annoyed with comics during the 90s, because most artists at the time drew the same woman as every female character, just in different costumes. Even the faces were the same. Jim Lee was particularly bad for that. I think it stemmed from what you said about how it's easier to draw men, but when an artist learns to draw women, they stop after figuring it out the first time.
The buff actress is Katy O'Bryan, I think she was in Andor or Mandalorian or something, just briefly. Looked her up and apparently IRL she does martial arts tournaments. She was also in Twisters and if the rumors are true about Running Man and Mission Impossible, it sounds like she'll just get casted in everything Glen Powell is in, lol
Well, a buff curvy she hulk, a voluptuos Big Barda, a fit yet well rounded motherly mature Sue Storm, a fit elegantly slim Black Widow. Female heroes should be diverse depending their powerset and fighting style.
I like Big Barda and some artists draw her too scrawny while others draw her too sturdy. She needs height, a good amount of muscle mass but also a good amount of femininity to her curves. Unrealistic in all the right ways. I’d put She-Hulk below her in mass and then Wondy can get away with being a mix of the two, although I’m guessing most people want her to be mucho sexo. I really liked the physique of Wonder Woman from Justice League: New Frontier. A taller version of that with the right proportions is how I prefer Barda.
As far as my personal taste, I'd say either frank cho or leinil yu where the women look athletic to some extent but still have curves. They strike a good balance imo
There’s a cool run of Cable’s ‘90s that starts at issue #48 and at #70 with José Ladrönn. It’s mostly written by Joe Casey outside of the first few issues. Not that they look the same, but looking at that Cable comic made me think of it.
I think partially why you felt the first "blocky" style working better than the latter "90's" style is because the blocky design better telegraphs to the reader what's she's about. It's enhanced also by the fact that her costume is doing zero work of being interesting or easy to convey (I really do not like that shoulder cape).
i think the "ideal" body type for female heroes depends on the hero, most are okay looking like the average pretty girl, but if its a brawler or strength based hero she should look big, one of the reasons i dislike she-hulk is because she is the female version of the hulk who weighs like 1000lb and she looks like she weighs 170lb, that is kinda dumb to me, yes she should be feminine but she also should be impossibly muscular and there are a bunch of female bodybuilders who look way bigger than her.
I'd say it depends on the kind of heroine you're writing; Sturdy Gal for instance is a bruiser that's on Cable's kind close quarters and militaristic, she's not going for aesthetics but practically. For heroines like Black Widow, for example, she's more lithe, athletically inclined towards gymnastics, and uses seduction as one of her disarming qualities for espionage work. I wouldn't be opposed to She-Hulk having a little bit more muscle, since she's a Hulk after all, but nothing like that It's Ma'am She-Hulk we had a few years ago.
Hey, you know that Zach guy? Yeah, I heard he was dead. I wish. Did you hear that he said that Cable was shaped like Jessica Rabbit with the sliders pushed to 11.
Zack........has gone, woke........Derka derka derka, derka....derka derka, DER-KA! Glad they're making good Cable comics though, character is friggin awesome!
Everybody's different. Most women, but certainly not all, think sturdy guys like Cable are ugly as fuck. They like fit, but not wrestler/defensive line types. A mature Spider-Man, A Johnny Weismuller Tarzan, a Neal Adams Superman, a Billy Graham Panther, these are closer to the masculine ideal.
If they want to draw "not pretty" women in comics that's fine by me as long as they can convey the power and femininity that Aino (Mimosa Willamo) portrayed in Sisu. You make women like HER and I'll throw my money at the creators in a heart beat!!

That cover is awesome.

One of the panels of Cable reminded me of Fred Flintstone. The villian looks awesome!

i think that big she-hulk we had a while ago could work but they needed to make her more feminine, add more curves and stuff

I have the opposite problem to this. I draw feminine looking men 😂
That lesbian chick was good in that Star Wars thing she was in. Whatever it was. Mandalorian, I think?
Fictional women don't have to look beautiful, they just need to look like women.
same with fictional men, ssssooooooo
@robinmohamedally7587 They must look manly!

Well I really that chunky Gina Carano.
In the initial frames my first impression was a very restrained (or strapped for time) Simon Bisley. I'm not against it
very restrained Bisley is a great way to describe it

Where men are men and women are also men.
Well at least the covers look good...🙄
