I can remember going to Fat Jacks comics here in Philly the day ASM #252 dropped but it sold out. That same day I did pick up Marvel Team up #141 and was knocked out with the new costume..Loving Spidey, I hunted all over for a #252 and finally found one at my local 7-11 one or two weeks later..It’s absolutely one of my favorite comic book memories as a kid. So ASM#252 and MTU#141 dropped the same day.At least here in Philly when
Welcome to the club! Yes, I don't remember if those comics came out the same day but I was reading, ASM, Spectacular and MTU at the time so I did get all 3 of those issues.
I missed the Peter Parker issue. Missed ASM 252 also. Got the latter for $40 a decade ago. They were all sold out at my drug store that month. But I got MTU 141! My first black costume ASM was 253.
I seem to remember buying #141 AMS #252 and PPTSSM #91 around the same time. In fact, I remember getting to the corner store in the early hours the day the mags were delivered to make sure I got my Team Up book and being pleasantly surprised that there was one of the other two books there. Needless to say I bought all three books pretty close together off a spinner rack.
ART ADAMS COVER! MIGNOLA INKS! There is a Black suit "in continuity" before ASM 252. Actual panels from ASM 252 of the black suit(in continuity) a month before the release. Also, first Transformers "in continuity".
Thanks Tom and Ryan - fun video, great list; appreciate you guys as always. It’s very interesting to note how podcast interviews, RUclips, and Gram posts have an influence on the marketplace. Thanks again.
I remember buying ASM 252 , MTUp 141 and SWars 8 all the same day in forbidden planet in London and the whole store was in awe of the black suit.. Uk comics were always 2-4 weeks behind US releases so all three popped on the rack at the same time
The one Lobo book that excites me most is not mentioned in the vid: Brave and the Bold #4 (issue after their first mtg). They are both on the cover (Lobo clinging to SuperGirl on a golden Harley in space with a planet exploding behind them), both of their title logos are clearly emblazoned on the cover, and - George Perez art (including interiors). Add in the classic Perez team-up w/Mark Waid's story, and you got a banger!
I remember picking up ASM252 and MTU141 simultaneously, But PPTSSM90 was a pickup on my following visit. This was at Emerald City Comics in Eugene, Oregon. Just so you know, I didn't pick up my books every week. I still have the books. i remember clearly trying to sketch the new black suit in my own drawing notepad and using both of those books as references for the suit
I picked up a copy of FF 280 at my comic shop like 2 weeks ago for 3 bucks, haven’t gotten to read it yet since I found 258-270 all in one bin. Really wish I had that luck with old Spider-Man books. Still pretty cool to see something new I recently got make it on the list
I’m an OG Collector and remember picking up all the first appearances of the Spider-Man black suit. There was confusion, so much so that Secret Wars 8 was considered the first appearance of the suit for the longest time.
All three black suit covers were very wanted by readers at the time. Spidey was so all summer. There was rarely a terrible Spider-Man or FF at the time.
ASM 252 was first. I bought it from the local comic / hobby store the day it came out. It was sold out when I went back 2 weeks later to get the Spec. Spidey 90 and MTU 141.
In the pre-internet age I knew about the rumor Spider-Man was getting a new suit. I went to my drug store newsstand every week to buy new comics. I bought ASM 252 because I saw the black suit. Had I seen the black suit that same week (or earlier) I would have bought the other SM books. I do not own the other books, so in Philly ASM hit the stands first.
What about that Lobo Justice League International where he actually gets the Main Man look we associate with him. Then there always 52 #17 where Starfire hires him with her body...
This may be a controversial topic, but can you guys possibly make a video about what happens to the value of comics when an entire collection goes up in flames? I hate seeing the LA fire, the lives lost and the destruction, but I often wonder what happens in the comic book world when thousands of mint comics get destroyed in a matter of seconds. Does insurance cover the loss? And do other collections go up in value now.? Thanks.
While I had bought spideys as a kid. Amazing 252 was the first Spider-Man that I bought as a “collector”. I enjoyed it enough that I grabbed the next spidey issues with the black suit. Secret wars did its job. As a kid with a job, I was buying every marvel book that remotely touched secret wars.
My hot take from this? The Authority has always been a brilliant read, especially Volume 1, driven by the incredible talents of Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch in the first 12 issues, and then probably Mark Millar's best work from #13 onwards, including his hilarious and brutal take on a government-sponsored Black Ops Avengers (with phenomenal art by Frank Quitely). One of the cornerstones of my collection, regardless of market value, because the real treasure is in the stories. And with James Gunn mining this stuff, I just can't wait to see what he'll do.
I've loved FF#280 for years - but chiefly because of that great Will Eisner inspired John Byrne cover. The great Malice cover though is FF#369. Sooooo 90's!
I'm surprised Malice's first cover appearance isn't on this list (FF#281). Though her second appearance, a much better cover!!! I've been collecting as much Mark Spears as I can get my grubby hands on!!! Glad to see WWI Ghost Rider getting some love!!! Great list!!!
I was 11 yrs old in 1992. My bus driver introduced me to Lobo who i was unfamiliar with. my parents had to sign off on allowing me to have Lobo's Back on my pull list at the LCS 😂 brings me back... going to have to dig out my copies and give it another read. Issue 2 is especially vulgar in all the right ways
I still don't understand the demographic that loved liefeld/cable/deadpool/domino in the new mutants. That wasn't the New Mutants that the original fans of issue #1 and the beautiful art of Bill Sienkiewicz enjoyed.
Why is the podcast version a week old? I prefer the podcast version most of the time because I can listen while driving but I don’t get why it’s a week behind. Old news by then.
Does anyone else hate when Marvel retroactively creates multiple versions of their characters from times past!? It's so unoriginal! The House of Ideas hasn't had an original idea in decades!
One of the first black suit appearances was also transformers number 3! Also a very underappreciated book
So true. That Spidey bump that many books recieved within the first few issues.
I brought that Marvel Team up when it first came out.....yes i am old
Me, too!
I had been 10 years into collecting when I brought that at the drug store on day of release. So glad I got back into collecting 3 years ago
Welcome to the club! Yes, I don't remember if those comics came out the same day but I was reading, ASM, Spectacular and MTU at the time so I did get all 3 of those issues.

11:36 & you can thank me for some of those graded copies out in the world

I saw the black suit on Marvel Team Up before ASM when it came out. Of course that was at our local variety store that never put things out on time.
Nice video Tom!😊

Eight billion genies sounds like a 🔥 read! Love the content!
I remember buying ASM 252 , MTUp 141 and SWars 8 all the same day in forbidden planet in London and the whole store was in awe of the black suit..
Uk comics were always 2-4 weeks behind US releases so all three popped on the rack at the same time
And you can thank John Byrne for the FF being the number one book out there. Let’s give credit where credit is due guys!!

Lobo is a fun character for sure.
That Malice story by JB is really good. Hope people actually read it.
Byrne FF at that time was selling a TON of copies per month. If it really gets hot thousands are going to show up and slam the price down. Be careful.
All three black suit covers were very wanted by readers at the time. Spidey was so all summer. There was rarely a terrible Spider-Man or FF at the time.
I remember buying 252 off the rack it was before marvel team up. And I bought the hole stack that was there much hype back then.
Sick shirt Russ!
Glad you mentioned the clear Spears/Gogos connection!
Tom, I just finished Agatha all along, and you were right. It was amazing. I need to get ff 94 asap.
ASM 252 was first. I bought it from the local comic / hobby store the day it came out. It was sold out when I went back 2 weeks later to get the Spec. Spidey 90 and MTU 141.
Great list
Love some Santa Fung! Great artist
Mark Spears does a LOBO cover for ACTION COMICS too
Loving the Artic Monkey's T-shirt Mate, Tom's got British Swaggg G.
Great show
I was collecting and yes technically 141 was out at the same time as 252
In the pre-internet age I knew about the rumor Spider-Man was getting a new suit. I went to my drug store newsstand every week to buy new comics. I bought ASM 252 because I saw the black suit. Almost snagged that Mark Spears cover, hoping it drops a little, if not still snagging it.
Can you guys do a show on Tuesday on new releases for that week? I never know what is coming out. Thx 👍
Wow, Barends is a serious artist.
got The Seasons ashcan from mill geek, such a fun read, love how it was laid out, some great energy, can't wait to see where this series goes.
Why are the printed or release dates 2 to 3 months aheadsometimes?
What about that Lobo Justice League International where he actually gets the Main Man look we associate with him. Then there always 52 #17 where Starfire hires him with her body...
Fantastic Four 280?!? First appearance of Malice. I didn’t see that one coming! Could this be the Uncanny 130 for 2025?
MTU#141: It's an Arthur Adams cover! Mignola inked.
This may be a controversial topic, but can you guys possibly make a video about what happens to the value of comics when an entire collection goes up in flames? No bronze or copper in dollar bins any more...dont refute this!!!! It is not common practice anymore..yet is merely novelty in thought.
Spears Frankenstein cover here looks like Guy Gardner from the Superman trailer
While I had bought spideys as a kid. Amazing 252 was the first Spider-Man that I bought as a “collector”. I enjoyed it enough that I grabbed the next spidey issues with the black suit. Secret wars did its job. As a kid with a job, I was buying every marvel book that remotely touched secret wars.
Green Lantern #55 1:25 ratio is the Lobo book to own IMO
Pretty much anything Lobo has been bananas lately if you look at recent sales!

Ohh Ya Tom I agree Black Science is one of the best series I've ever read. If anyone out there hasn't read it check it out! Fantastic Story.
I've loved FF#280 for years - but chiefly because of that great Will Eisner inspired John Byrne cover. The great Malice cover though is FF#369. Sooooo 90's!
A video game skin pushing a book is super meta. We had a good run but it’s over yall
Russ. Kool shirt
Nice picks
Both 2 copies of Fantastic Four #280 on ebay for low price
I'm surprised Malice's first cover appearance isn't on this list (FF#281). Though her second appearance, a much better cover!!! I've been collecting as much Mark Spears as I can get my grubby hands on!!! Glad to see WWI Ghost Rider getting some love!!! Great list!!!
I believe that Art Adams was the cover artist, and Mignola was the inker to that beautiful Marvel Team-Up # 141.
I was 11 yrs old in 1992. My bus driver introduced me to Lobo who i was unfamiliar with. my parents had to sign off on allowing me to have Lobo's Back on my pull list at the LCS 😂 brings me back... going to have to dig out my copies and give it another read. With Lobo, Will The Demon be next????????????????????????😮
I am surprised fantastic four 369 that has to cover appearance of malice
Colorforms magic.
FF 280 is the first appearance but if you want Malice on your wall. FF 369 is the book you want
@comic con I want a top 10 spiderman list !!! Let’s do it Spiderman comics is all that matters goat
Mark Spears #1 Cover A is STILL going UP AND UP $275
I wonder what books are gonna spike because of the upcoming Wolverine game?
Per Wikipedia:" Basil Gogos was born to a Greek family living in Egypt" Anyway the man was a master. Love the props to him!
I still don't understand the demographic that loved liefeld/cable/deadpool/domino in the new mutants. That wasn't the New Mutants that the original fans of issue #1 and the beautiful art of Bill Sienkiewicz enjoyed.
Stop sleeping on mtu 141
Lobo!

Tom's always trying to manipulate the market...😅

🎉🎉🎉🎉
I'm confused I guess and it has been a while since I've read it. Isn't issue 8 of Secret Wars the TRUE first appearance of symbiote suit Spidey?
Actually no, Secret Wars 8 came out in December...seven months after Team-up 141
I remember seeing Team-up 141 a week before 252, and it was only because 252 hadn't come out yet.
Team-up 141 came out about a week before 141.
Great List!!!! That Spears Homage is Awesome 👌
