I am from the UK. The only country I have ever visited in Latin America is Venezuela. I spent a lovely couple of days in Merida in 1992, it always seemed to rain for 20 minutes in the middle of the afternoon. It brought back happy memories of the 3 weeks I spent in the country when the young lady mentioned Arepas etc

Hey Arnaud, I posted this as a reply, but I want you to see this comment so that pdcdesign's comment doesn't mislead you. There's a lot of debate as to the origin of that word Latino. Including words like "Ladino" and was used during the Spanish empire. That word existed way before any efforts of French colonization in Latin America, and highly probably the actual origin of the word. Regardless, the term Latin America is based on actual logic. Let's keep it real, the majority of Latin America are southern Europeans (Latin people) mixed with indigenous (Americans) people, so it's not like there isn't actual truth to that. It's possible that France tried to appeal to the term to gain favor and contributed to some degree to popularizing, but I think the impact overall would have still been very little. The word "Ladino" was used similarly to the word "Mestizo" which I think contributed to the fast acceptance as the acknowledgement of being mixed race is something that is omnipresent in Latin America.

So yeah, Latin Americans can complain, because most people who don’t know much associate those things as part of you culture, which is incredibly wrong.

I am from Brazil. Unfortunately it's not just the Brits, foreigners in general when talking about Latin America remember violence, drugs and corrupt politicians...😢😢😢
Obviously we are much more than that. We are from one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Our natural landscapes are stunning. Latin America's biodiversity is off the charts.
We are the result of the mixture of different people, which gives us a unique cultural richness and diversity. Our food is delicious. There is no country in Latin America that has bad food. Our cinema is vibrant. We have great music and many of the most creative writers and artists are from Latin America.

It's always interesting to me to hear people say 'we are a lot more friendly in my country, we know all our neighbours and we have community' - but those communities never really change, in the UK we have new neighbours from around the world every week, its not possible to build the communities we used to have in these areas with the constant change of new people as students or workers who have no real connection and move on every few years.

If she is from Peru she is not latina. Latinos are Spaniards, Portuguese, French, Italians and Romanians. We were part of the Roman empire, we inherited the language, the gastronomy, the laws, the religion, the habits, the culture, everything, that's why we are latinos. In América they don't even know why they got called latinos, and they never questioned it. Eejits.

The funny thing is the term LATIN AMERICA was coined by a French guy.
It was the French economist Michel Chevalier who first used the term “Latin America” in the 1850s while traveling the Americas as a way to distinguish what he felt were “Latin” peoples from the “Anglo-Saxon” peoples. This idea helped legitimize French colonial activities in Latin America.

If its a party and it says starting 'from' 8 this basically means you can arrive up to an hour or more after and it's OK. If you are meeting someone in the rain which I think is where our punctuality comes from, yes try to be on time as the other one will be getting wet or cold. If you are meeting at a cafe or pub 15 to 30mins late is normal. As for talking about others. Yes people do this, depends who it is and why.and no you can't go to the police because someone was being disrespectful about you 😂, well you could but unless it was serious racial or gender type abuse, but even then you are unlikely to hear from them as they have a hard enough time dealing with crime as it is.

Ah those from Venezuela. I have never understood your need to say "oh my parents are from Venezuela but my grandparents are from Germany" and in many cases it is not even true. Why aren't Venezuelans proud of their race? In all of Latin America (except Argentina, who believe they are Europeans, literally) there is the concept that if your father is Venezuelan and your mother is Peruvian, but you were born and raised in Venezuela, you are Venezuelan, period. But Venezuelans never seem to be able to be proud of their origins. You always want to bring up a relative from outside the American continent and many times that is not even true.

Ustedes no hablan latín, sino español.
