Please go back and watch the 1992 Presidential debates and then see if you still fell this way. On the other hand, if you are a young person you might not have the context to fully appreciate the humor. I watched the 92 debates many times and was still LOL after a half dozen times. Carvey is a genius.
Dana Carvey was my all time favorite comedian on SNL. Loved his church lady routine and the grumpy old man. Wayne and Garth was very funny but his funniest routine was Hanz and Franz. I busted my gut laughing so many times over that routine!
Notice now that Joe is out they make fun of him. They didn't actually make fun of Harris. Their comedy is politically managed. You can make fun of this one but not that one. Back in the day they made fun of everyone.
This has been SNL's MO for a long time now. They "made fun" of Harris by making her the "cool aunt" who dances at her rally. Really going after her there lol
I don’t think that we’ll ever see Alec Baldwin, a/k/a “Mr. Nice Guy,” ever doing his very amusing impersonation of former President Trump on SNL again. And, since Mr. Baldwin is SUCH a handgun enthusiast, it would have been great fun to have seen Mr. Baldwin portraying former President Trump at that Pennsylvania political rally as the late, unlamented Thomas Matthew Crooks just missed killing President Trump. No doubt, Mr. Baldwin would have elicited uproarious laughter from the sycophants in the SNL studio audience, seeing that wickedly wry skit.
Bill is correct. Dana understands comedy, and knows to do impressions in a fun way. Most SNL skits in the last few years tended to be full of hate, and are not very funny.
Remember Johnny Carson....... he also made similar witty quips before the elections. Mr. Carvey distinguishes himself by being above the vitriol of lesser comedians.
Same here, Johnny!! Man, that was a great era...Phil, Chris, Adam...phew! Good crew, brother!! And of course we got to watch Dave losing it with Christina Applegate with good ole' Matt Foley... Motivational Speaker! 😂😂
SNL in the 1970s and up through Carvey's days did kinder, gentler political satire. Carvey made fun of Bush based on his personality quirks, not on saying he was an evil or stupid man. You can also look at Phil Hartman's famous Reagan and Clinton sketches. They parody Reagan as being a mastermind who pretends to be a simple old man in public. That's just a clever idea, nothing mean. And they parodied Clinton as schmoozing the public while he stole their food at McDonald's. Again, that's just good comedy, not mean-spirited. SNL just doesn't do enough of that anymore. Their political comedy, at least for Republicans, is meant to try to portray them as terrible people who you should hate.
Yup. Now it’s left-wing, activism disguised as comedy. And, SNL’s been like that for close to 10yrs, at this point. There was not “hate” in it. Given what SNL supports and why, and the fact that that SNL as a whole wants the destruction of this country in almost every aspect of it (via their unconditional support of the Democrat Party), I’ll never watch it again. Just like I’ll never drink another Budweiser product again…I don’t care HOW many times they apologize. *There are roads you flat-out, don’t go down, under ANY circumstances in this country.*
Bill I have known you to be probably the most integral journalist I have ever seen and there's not many like you buddy thank you for your honesty your integrity and you're willing to tell the truth
Always liked you, for years, my dad watched you regularly and I would hear you regularly due to him and I realized something different coming out of you -you are fair! ❤
Dana is such a brilliant comedian. Please also watch the SNL skit, "The McLaughlin Group". He honors personality types regardless of his/her politics. Pure class.
That's one of my favorite SNL sketches of all time. Phil Hartman later did his own hilarious take on it with The Sinatra Group. Sting plays a spot-on Billy Idol in that one, LOL.
Hartman arguably has the top two SNL political sketches of all time under his belt, the Reagan mastermind sketch and the Clinton McDonald's sketch. Both have some of the highest views on RUclips of vintage SNL political sketches.
Losing her and John Belushi was tragic for the show's legacy. It's amazing that after those early deaths in the '80s, the rest of the main '70s cast has stayed with us to date. Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Jane Curtain, Laraine Newman, Garrett Morris.
It’s why Alec Baldwin’s version of Trump isn’t funny. Baldwin hates Trump, and you can’t be funny with an undercurrent of hate. One of the reasons why everything Dana Carvey does is brilliant - besides his being a comedic genius - is he has respect for the people he plays.
I don't mind SNL making fun of Trump, but last year, they never said anything bad about Biden or any other Democrat. Saturday Night Live was so much funnier when they made fun of everybody. Years ago, they had Nancy Pelosi as a dominatrix that was going to become Speaker of the House. They had Biden and the democrats as buffoons doing the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings. Classic. Hilarious.
How about the one where Madonna was on stage and smiling up at President Bill Clinton, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton? While the the decidedly satiric Bill Clinton (portrayed by the late, great Phil Hartman) thought that Madonna was smiling suggestively (or more to the point, lustfully) up at him, she was really smiling suggestively up at young Chelsea. Can you imagine SNL doing a similar sketch involving the Biden family today?

The reason I don't watch SNL anymore is very simple. They used to go for the joke, and it was funny. Now they go for the agenda-push, and it's NOT funny. That's it, that's the whole of it. They need to set the socio-political agenda aside, and go for the joke like Carvey did. He's an incredible impressionist and a really funny guy. Always has been. I'd agree with you, but would also add Mike Myers to the list. That cast got me watching SNL regularly starting in 1988 for 5 years. Mike wasn't a huge impressionist, but was better at creating original characters than just about anyone else. Wayne's World, Middle-Aged Man, Coffee Talk, Simon, Lothar of the Hill People, etc.
Agree with those three, but I’d also throw in Mike Myers, Dennis Miller, Norm MacDonald, Chevy Chase (before he lost his mind), Kevin Nealon, Adam Sandler, & Dan Aykroyd. (I’m in the vastly minority opinion that doesn’t think Farley was funny).

Yeah, now that Biden is no longer on the ticket SNL feels comfortable making fun of him. But notice the difference in their satire of Harris vs how they portrayed Trump.

I've seen Dana Carvey perform live at the Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena, along with his sons Dex and Tom, each in separate acts, and all three were terrific standup comedians. As Bill notes here, Dex sadly passed away. Dana has always been a superb comedian in the classic tradition of respectful satirization, of the type people used to experience regularly on the Johnny Carson show. That's why it didn't surprise me to learn that George W. Bush loved Dana's satirization of his George W. characterization. Similarly, Dan's friend and colleague, Norm McDonald did a hilarious satirization on SNL of Bob Dole (whom I've had the pleasure of meeting). Bob also loved Norm's characterization of him and they had met several times and liked one another. The way to describe what Dana has been doing throughout his career is "comedy with class." Today's SNL, however, apart from bright spots with comedians like Dana Carvey, is neither classy nor funny.
Newt Gingrich also found Chris Farley's impression of him funny and had him appear in Congress. You just don't see that anymore, at least with Republicans, because the impressions have become so mean-spirited and aimed at defeating the person politically.
