    Bridge Commander currently has 3 Blake 7 ships and I thought we would take a look at them.
    We will put the Liberator against the Borg, The Enterprise B, The Ori from Stargate SG1 and finally some Pursuit ships from Blake 7.
    Season 1 of Blake 7 is due to be released on Blu-ray in November.

    Blake’s 7, low budget, great acting and good writing…..and those last two matter the most

    In Blake's 7, the Liberator was by far the fastest ship known to exist. It's weapons could largely one shot a starbase, but they used an insane amount of power. The Neutron blasters would have a few shots, then the ship was largely dead in the water (Space water?) while it recharged it's batteries.
    Even without shields, it could take a serious pounding. Armor was made out of neutron star stuff. I always wondered how they were able to keep the degenerate matter from crushing everyone on the ship to a layer of stuff one atom thick.
    Fun fact: The auto repair systems were more than a bit aggressive. If they ship took a serious beating, the crew needed to abandon ship for a time or the repair systems would eat them.

      @@RetroBadgerGaming, Just one word of warning, don't judge the series by the first few episodes. They did not have the sets built and it did not look to me as if they were quite ready. I got the impression from the start that the BBC was trying to kill off the series. They had a hard time doing so because, the fans loved it.

    The writing in Blake's 7 was great, the acting mostly good, sometimes great, the visual effects were iffy, but the effects have been completely re-done, for the new blue ray set with practical model effects.

    Liberator is an absolutely beautiful ship. I always thought that Star Trek should’ve cast Jacquelin Pearce as the Federation President. It would’ve given an interesting slant on seeing the Star Trek federation from a potentially different perspective. It can’t possibly be *that* saccharine and nice as we’re constantly shown.

  • @ldarksong

    Hello Retro.
    This was awesome! I know I mentioned before that The Liberator is among my favorite sci-fi vessels and while I have actually run this very same set of battles you just did, I will never get tired of seeing this.
    It is long overdue for the series to come to Blu-ray. For its run it was definitely a good show. It was among the early ones that did not have the usual good guy/ bad guy trope since the good guys for technically bad guys themselves who are out to do what was morally right in a corrupt Galaxy.
    I will admit that at the time I really watched the show just for The Liberator. Since this was the time before conventions start to have tech manuals for TV series, mainly Star Trek, I spend a lot of time speculating on what The Liberator could do based on what dialogue occurred for her systems. And when she was finally destroyed that was it for me and the series.
    I'll have to check online for the link but someone did take the time to actually give us a scale size of the Liberator. Apparently she's roughly about the same size as the original series Enterprise.
    You have to love her armaments. Those neutron cannons are so powerful that they need their own shields just to fire them and not fry the ship. One is enough to cause massive damage as you have seen. All three on one target well that's game over. Not to leave out her missile compliment which can be switched to barrage mode to overwhelm any enemy.
    The Liberator does have one weakness that was exploited in the show and is in the mod. She is a bit of a gas guzzler. While she is self-sustaining you drain her energy and she has to run to recharge.
    The Federation pursuit ships in the mod are fairly accurate from the series. I'm not sure what beam weapon they used. But they're main weapon high powered plasma bolts and they did travel in Klingon style packs of three.
    I think is that in the series, Avon, while discussing his options of going alone, did say that The Liberator could only deal with three pursuit ships. I put that to the test to see exactly if that was right. I'll do it again but I believe the number that finally gave me trouble was around the twenties!
    Anyway before it gets any longer at some point you should have a Systems Fleet featuring The Liberator and the System’s Cruisers versus “fill in the blank” and see what happens.

    Blake’s 7 had the best ending of a Si-fi show, with all the crew supposedly dead, but Avon standing in the middle of a load of federation solders pointing guns after he kills Blake, while he laughs. Then it goes black and the guns fire. But were they all dead ?

    In B7 i had the impression the plasma bolt from the pursuit ship was a physically bigger sized warhead and slow to power up, much as a Romulan plasma torp. The system ships were from the same race that built the liberator, faster but not as powerful, as encountered by The B7 crew early on. I think the liberator was built as a long range exploration vessel.

    • @s.patrickmarino7289
      @s.patrickmarino7289 17 дней назад +1

      I think you can catch it on Britbox. The extra quality of picture and sound you get from Blu-ray is something of a waste. The original media was not all that great. The thing about Blake's 7, it was both the best and the worst. The writing was uneven. The acting was not that bad. I don't know if the show actually had a budget or if they just used the leftovers from other BBC series. The biggest thing it had going for it was, the only competition was Dr. Who. Where I lived, they put Blake's 7 just after Dr. Who so one lead into the other.
      Don't get me wrong, I loved the show. Just expect more camp than quality.

    • @MSR-1701
      @MSR-1701 17 дней назад +2

      @@s.patrickmarino7289 oh I fully expect the camp.😂
      And I typically do Physical media, or not at all (local internet is... we'll go with inconsistent). BluRay is ideal, especially as the BBC has been reissuing series on that format of late (see Classic Doc Who)

    • @simonpreston
      @simonpreston 16 дней назад

      @@s.patrickmarino7289 Britbox is terrible. Unless things have changed recently, their encodes do not take interlacing in to account. So rather than 50fps, you get 25fps. It's horrendous. I agree blu ray probably isn't going to be a huge improvement over the DVD, for the most part, but the redone practical effects should look a lot better - even if it loses some authenticity.
