  • 1966 Recording of "He Lives In a World Of His Own" - From a rare acetate demo tape (UPDATE)
In 1966 Shirley Bassey recorded two songs that were released on an extremely rare demo acetate tape. The A-Side is titled, "He Lives In a World Of His Own". Lionel Bart wrote this love song for Shirley Bassey's audition for the movie version of, Oliver! Unfortunately, Shirley didn’t get the Nancy role; it went to Shani Wallis. And, the song didn’t make it either, ending up on a rare acetate tape and largely forgotten until unearthed by Natalie Douglas when researching her Bassey tribute show. Mark Harrison subsequently digitized the acetate tape so that Shirley Fans can listen to this wonderful recording. (Thank You Mark!). To accompany Shirley's wonderful recording, I included scenes from eight emotionally packed movies that align with Bart's breathtaking lyrics.
In my humble opinion, Shirley's recording is so touching with lush vocals, and with such yearning. It’s surprising nothing has been done with it for so long. For the life of me, I don't know why the Record Producers have not studio professionalized this beautiful recording and released it to the public. Back in 1966, this song definitely should have been released as a single. However, it most likely was intended to be placed on Shirley's 1966 album titled, "I've Got A Song For You", but in the final song cut it was left off. Another stupid mistake! The B-Side was a faster paced number titled, "Who The Hell".
    LYRICS:
How can I tell him I love him?
When he lives in a world his own.
How do you make a man listen?
When the man you love stands alone.
    I can’t demand his attention,
Like a child who is not fully grown,
How can I show him I love him?
When he lives I a world of his own?
Lord knows I do the best I can,
To give the best in me.
But when he needs me most of all,
    I stand by helplessly.
How can I tell him I love him?
    When he is never alone?
    How can I show him,?
    When I hardly know him,
He lives in a world of his own.
    MOVIE CLIPS:

Thank you for watching this wonderful Shirley Bassey song & video. This lady is able to change her timber and vibrato to match the genre of song she sings. Because she was trying to win the part of Nancy in the movie Oliver, she used her wonderful Operatic Pop sound. And, to amazing effect! It's too bad that the Shirley didn't win the part and the song was not chosen to be in the movie! It's also too bad that the producers didn't decide to professionalize the recording and introduce it as a Single for Shirley! Shirley's recording of Lionel Bart's "As Long As He Needs Me" was a top 5 hit and it stayed on the charts for 6 months. I believe this would have been another hit for Shirley!
