Before there was Beyonce, Whitney or Mariah, we had Dame Shirley Bassey, a beacon of class, power and longevity. Her voice is both enormous and yet subtle when it needs to be. What's even more spectacular is that she still sounds exceptional and she's in her 80s!
And after.
We STILL have Dame Shirley. And her music will live on for generations long after Beyonce and her ilk are long forgotten. Beyonce doesn't even belong in the same category of talent as either Whitney or Mariah. The latter two had real, organic talent. They could command a stage and move an audience just by using their voices. But even at the peak of their careers neither of them had the vocal power or style that Dame Shirley does.
Beyonce belongs to a category of newer type of 'entertainer' that I like to call "trash"...the type who NEED half-naked butt-shaking ho dancers, occult imagery, and the blessings of demons to be successful and to remain popular. Logically, she isn't even worthy of mention in any comparison to Dame Shirley Bassey.

My parents saw Shirley bassey in the 1950s she was about 17 then and she was the supporting act at the royal court in Liverpool my mother adored her, as soon as she opened her mouth to sing my mother said she is going to go far , and boy has she been far right to the top

I don't really understand all the technical language of voice but I can appreciate how you articulated the mechanics of Shirley Bassey's singing. It's a pleasure to see the interest and appreciation that young people like yourself have for the gifted singers of yesteryears who had REAL voices and true talent!

Dame Shirley Bassey has been performing for more than 60 years. She has had a very long lived succesful career and she has one of the most perserved voice to this day. She is also known as the "Queen of Song". What a great performer and singer! I am a huge fan of Shirley and I love what Andy Davis is doing on his reaction page!

Wasn't expecting this reaction! Dame Shirley Bassey is a legend and I hope the younger generations remember her. It's amazing how her voice has sustained so well, even to this day, she's 83 now. I like her performance of Typically English.

They won't dare. According to Cancel Culture policy, its no longer cool for white people to mock black people and call it comedy (although its still ok if its the other way around). Yeah, it would take the talent-less losers on that show to try to mock one the greatest singers in history though.
SNL is such a soul-less and unfunny show now. Mocking people in a mean-spirited way is what they have to resort to as humor because they have no real talent and no ideas. That show used to be very funny back in the 70s and the 80s. It began to drift in the late 90s, and now its just political, PC, low-class, and nasty.

I adore Shirley Bassey! Grew up learning her songs because there were so few female singers that I could sing their songs without having to transpose them down.
I sang Big Spender for an audition one time, had so much fun it was awesome.
She's just so carefree and relaxed when she sings. She has such trust in her voice that she focuses (outwardly at least) solely on her performance to the audience. She's just something very special in my eyes.

If they've only heard Goldfinger there are so many other tremendous songs, she's definitely a performer who's entire catalogue is worth delving into for those who haven't had the opportunity to hear her over the years :).

Another great job! Recommend that you react to Shirley's live version of Rod McKuen's If You Go Away, which was essentially the English version of Jacques Brel's Ne Me Quitte Pas. Her phrasing in that song is totally unique. No one sings that song as powerfully as she does, although Glen Campbell also does a beautiful version.
