ABOUT this song:
"My Way" is a song with lyrics written by Paul Anka and popularized by Frank Sinatra. The melody is based on a French song "Comme d'habitude" composed by Claude François and Jacques Revaux. Anka's English lyrics are unrelated to the original French by Claude François and Gilles Thibaut and Anka is credited as a co-composer of "My Way" because he largely re-wrote the song. "My Way" is often quoted as the most remade song in history.
Paul Anka heard the original 1967 French pop song, Comme d'habitude (as usual) performed by Claude Francois with music by Claude Francois and Jacques Revaux and lyrics by Claude Francois and Gilles Thibault, while on holiday in the south of France. He flew to Paris to negotiate the rights to the song.[1] In a 2007 interview, he said: "I thought it was a bad record, but there was something in it."[2] He acquired publishing rights at no cost[3] and, two years later, had a dinner in Florida with Frank Sinatra and "a couple of Mob guys" at which Sinatra said he was "quitting the business. I'm sick of it, I'm getting the hell out".
Back in New York, Anka re-wrote the original French song for Sinatra, subtly altering the melodic structure and changing the lyrics: "At one o'clock in the morning, I sat down at an old IBM electric typewriter and said, 'If Frank were writing this, what would he say?' And I started, metaphorically, 'And now the end is near.' I read a lot of periodicals, and I noticed everything was 'my this' and 'my that'. We were in the 'me generation' and Frank became the guy for me to use to say that. I used words I would never use: 'I ate it up and spit it out.' But that's the way he talked. I used to be around steam rooms with the Rat Pack guys - they liked to talk like Mob guys, even though they would have been scared of their own shadows." Anka finished the song at 5am. "I called Frank up in Nevada - he was at Caesar's Palace - and said, 'I've got something really special for you.'"[2] Anka claimed: "When my record company caught wind of it, they were very pissed that I didn't keep it for myself. I said, 'Hey, I can write it, but I'm not the guy to sing it.' It was for Frank, no one else."
Dame Shirley Bassey recorded the song for her 1970 album Something. She also performed in live on numerous occasions notably the 1976 Royal Variety Performance. In the weeks following Sinatra's death in 1998 , Bassey sang is as a tribute to him on her "Diamond" concert tour.
LYRICS:
And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.
I've lived a life that's full.
I've traveled each and ev'ry highway;
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.
Regrets, I've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.
I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.
Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.
I've loved, I've laughed and cried.
I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.
To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
"No, oh no not me,
I did it my way".
For what is a woman, what has she got?
If not herself, then she has naught.
To say the things she truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows -
And did it my way.
One of the most outstanding voice of all time
Exactly,
No matter what you face in life man woman or child. Do it your way. Stand up in the face of fear may you all find meaning and happiness 2023 and beyond.
No, because if we do it our way, it will end up as a failure. We should do it God's way.
I've heard this song by Frank Sinatra, but to hear Shirley Bassey sing this song took me to a new high. I played this song for my mother's memorial in 2021. I hear every woman's emotion, pain, joy, sadness, and freedom in this song video. The woman chooses not to explain why and did not want to explain anything to anyone. I hear my mother's voice and all her years of emotions in every movement Ms.Bassey made. I see now that my mother did things Her Way. Letting go and letting someone you love enjoy their life's journey without explanations is very hard to do. My mom enjoyed her journey I hope it took you to places no one will dear to explore.
Barbara: What a wonderful comment! Thank you, Scot
Wishing her eternal peace
Check out Elvis version too.
She’s alive still

With all versions of this song, and I were allowed only to listen to one from now on, I would choose this one, and no doubt about it.
I'm 68 years old. When I was 18, I worked behind a bar in a UK night club. I got called in on my night off. I had requested time off because Shirley Bassey was appearing for the next two weeks.(not my kind of music). Long story short. I worked that night and every other night for the following two weeks, just to be able to watch and listen. She was amazing. There wasn't a sound while she was performing. I'll never forget that two weeks.
I have seen that once in my life. Not her. But 30 years later I remember it.
Amazing
Wow! What an experience for you.
long life!
Damn, get`s me every time..........she acts and sings at the same time.
She truly is a living legend, and don`t tell me she`s not.
+Johan Lebbing Dame Shirley Bassey! She is PHENOMENON!
@@mugesUSA The Krauts have no passion
There isn't another singer that performs like Shirley Bassey..She lives each & every song she sings..
We're not gonna find singers like this for an awful long time.
Exactly, it's as if she goes into a trance when she starts singing, totally unaware of her surroundings until the end of the song, amazing.
Muito exagerada.
The very best version of this song. I’m addicted to Frank’s version, but there is so much emotion, power, and heart put into Shirley’s version. And my goodness. She’s singing it live!
She is simply the best - no one takes command of a song and dominate a stage like this lady. She gives you goosebumps when she opens her mouth 👄. Sing on Dame, sing on❤
Yes indeed, the emotion comes out at the very end when she was almost in tears
Have you heard Elvis singing this?
@@iyabobassir9855 Yes.
Agreed. This is one of Shirley Bassey's best live performances. So many amazing moments on stage during her long career , but this performance certainly stands out.
Nobody sings with that theatricality. The legendary voice is just a little part of her talent!
Her non-verbal presentation is so splendid that it enriches a lot to her whole story-telling of this song - Incredible!
Nobody ever had more passion in singing! The facial expressions, the mouth, hands, and body movements show the emotions embedded in the songs. She totally deserved every booming applause!
Great singer of all times 😀

She nailed every song she performed. One of the best ever.

What an incredible delivery of emotion. She leaves absolutely everything on that stage.
Hello Friends! If you enjoy Dame Shirley's renditions of My Way, please also check out her live 1974 and 1976 versions. Just type in Shirley Bassey - My Way 1974 (or Shirley Bassey - My Way 1976) and you should these clips come up. Shirley Bassey doesn't sing songs. She acts them. This is truly one of the finest examples. Amazing.
More superlatives than can fit on the page. When Shirley sings, my lungs fill.

Having talent and possessing a great voice is not enough. It is the projection , sentiment and the delivery of the song what creates an artist. I have heard this version from many artists or vocalists, but this one took me aback. Shirley did one of the best versions I have heard ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will her a 15 if this was a competition. I truly enjoyed it
For me this is the best version of this song I have ever heard, from all the talent shows to Sinatra, breathtaking!
She sang it well but Elvis Presley sang it the best
Lol
LOL this is a joke ??
I vote you.
The composer of the song my way is Paul anka sang by frank sinatra
Heard Elvis sing it, watched Frankie also, but Shirley Bassey took that song to new heights. Beautiful.
Have a listen to Shirley's 1974 version (In Black Dress). Every version she sings live is slightly different, and they all are great! Certain huge songs like this, Shirley prefers to NOT sing exactly like her recording of the song.
What a great voice! That red gown is gorgeous, her hair cut. She’s 86 now. Wish her good health, happiness. May the good LORD bless
And keep her
Shirley bassy to me has the best voice it's so rich so mellow so strong so passionate I love her expression and she is so beautiful she one POWERFUL woman this lady makes me cry watching her profound
This wonderful classic has so many talented and brilliant singers who have presented it to us over many d....ALL Their way...I have heard them all on U Tube and each of them tell it the story in a unique way...As they see it. Just like we all do in life. Each of them adds a new dimension and layers. Sinatra, Elvis, Celine, Bassy and many others. 2020.Thank you all xx.
Shirley Bassey in my opinion is the only woman that her performance specifically on that song can be compared with that of Frank Sinatra! Talents of such a high level are born once in a century...
+luisa nomikou - Luisa...I would also check her Shirley's 1974 and 1976 versions of this song. Every version is slightly different, but they ALL are great!
Thank you very much! :-) I would love to hear the other performances of Shirley Bassey on that song! Shirley is always Great!
+luisa nomikou Helo Luisa, I recommend you to hear the voice of my "second love" Vicky Karr (the first one is Shirley Bassey). Both voices are similar! Enjoy her.
I agree she the best could listen to her 24 seven
JOSÉ MANUEL REYES ANDRADE Thank you a lot Jose! Of course I will hear it with pleasure, thanks again for your recommendation! I love both voices...! :-)
Dame Shirley Bassey. Puts her heart and soul into every song. Outstanding performance. What a legend. She did it her way.
My mother loved SB. My mom died in 1993. And I picked up the baton! The only one who could possibly give Whitney competition. And the way she sings this song, brings tears. Back in the early 70s, maybe late 60s, my mother, who had just gotten out of the hospital, fell in love with Lana Cantrell, who sang this on Ed Sullivan. Almost immediately, she and I became like love sick puppies. Following her around, 2 weeks, 2 shows every night. Her band used to sit at our table between shows!!. I sang and imitated her, but I think she admired this fantastic woman, too. They sang a lot of the same songs. One song after 66 years, that I never heard of but love, is Never Never Never and Shirley just does it beautifully. What a voice. And I love her belting, she slides into a note with so much power and beauty. A truly incredible singer. This is My Life is another great song they both did. Unfortunately they just don't sing like this anymore. Oh, and I LOVE the band and arrangement on Never Never Never, brings the tears again. The way we were.
Thank you for getting it on youtube
She performs and sings Soooo Great❤
this song really represents her life. there will never be another shirley bassey that will walk on this earth
I will not stop listening to this song. It’s awesome. Shirley is wonderful 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Check out Shirley's 1974 and 1976 performances of this song. All are a little different, but just as dramatic. When someone gives a dramatic performance of this song, they better be able to back it up with supreme vocals. And, Shirley Bassey never fails to amaze with her powerful voice...
So moving beautiful a true singer

She continues to amaze me with her spectacular vocals!!
For my money, this towers above all of them...profound, intelligent and incredibly moving.
You'll fall in love with Shirley Bassey in her rendition of many love songs. One will feel emotional with the way she sings with story telling to the listeners. She's admirable to the highest level.
I hope the audience stood up. It must of been amazing to be there. I miss performers and performances like this. Truly breathtaking.
What a lady, what a voice. Her voice was powerful enough to move mountains. Love her.

The very best live interpretation ever!!! Dame Shirley is an electrifying and sensational performer on stage. Nobody does it like her.
not even frank ??? i don't think so. she is great, but never better than frank, at least what becomes to this song.
Que d'émotions dans le crescendo de cette interprétation ! My way est la chanson de bien de vies.
I just love this woman, lady in my eyes. What a wonderful voice. Lots of young and upcoming artists can learn from her.
the best execution ! THE VOICE of our CENTURY! She puts more "feeling" and expression into the song than any other singer. I simply "bow" to her talent. I am overwhelmed. I adore her.
Now THAT is a performance, a true icon who built herself up from a tough suburb of Cardiff to one of the greatest vocalists in the world
Isn’t she just adorable. what a glorious voice, and what stage presence. Shirley and Tom, from the land of song x
On Mothers Day eve, I want to wish her a Happy Mothers Day. She loved Ms. Bassey and so do I, and this song. When I was a little girl, my mother was in the hospital and wanted to come home, they let her. That night, she fell in love with Lana Cantrell, who sang this on Ed Sullivan. We followed her around like love sick puppies! Now, at 66, I found a child on YT, named Carina Veghiu, and she's absolutely fantastic, like a mini SB, her beauty and power and emotion. This song is so emotional for so many reasons, 6 years ago and hopefully again in 2. I also sang this in a show when I was about 18, centuries ago, I hope my mother liked it. But, SB is just brilliant, her vocals are otherworldly and even her belting gives Whitney Houston competition and that's a hard thing to do. Shirley Bassey sings one word and I burst into tears. Sorry I vented. My Way does something to my emotional chord!
bravo! she is a superb storyteller through her songs. the emotions and her mere presence is majestic.
One of the most incredible performances I've ever seen and heard in my lifetime. Pure class.
Absolutely stunning performance, every word etched in her heart as she delivers like no one else can.
Beautiful lady too.
Shirley respectfully you have been the love of my life since I was a teenager. You make me feel enamored of life with your voice and the feeling with which you sing. Your songs and your voice stimulate to continue working with illusion in spite of the adversities. During my life that has been full of emotions and challenges, happiness has been to hear you, and I am filled with love and I thank the Creator for sending you as an angel of light to give us happiness. I firmly believe that humans have seen with you what awaits you in paradise. You are a being of light

Whoa! Magnificent voice. She sings like she is telling her story.
That sums it up perfectly.
Absolutely astounding! Her rendition is the best I've ever heard, bar none. Aside from her indescribably amazingly beautiful and poweful voice, what touched my soul is the defiance in her delivery. I want this played at my funeral.
Pat: Check out Shirley's 1974 performance of this song. Dame Shirley is a real entertainers' singer, as each time she performs a song, she makes slight changes in the delivery. With Shirley's amazing voice, and unique live delivery style, she is one of those few singers/performers who are considered as a once in a generation performer. And, at 84 yo, she still has maintained her wonderful, vibrant voice
I still like Sinatra's version the best--the song fitted his persona. But Bassey's performance is incredibly good.
@@sas9023055
I watched all of these videos. This is by far my favorite version. Her voice is richer, and best of all is the conviction and defiance with which she delivered it. Youth is, in my opinion looking back on a long life, overrated. These are the gifts of age.
@@philipwaggettstaff9172
I think that this version speaks to women's experiences in a much more personal way. Sinatra was great, and I'm sure many men felt it in their souls. It was a man's song and spoke to that experience. Dame Shirley gifted me that same ownership and made this song mine.
She is the singer with the best storytelling skills I know of. She invokes a great deal of emotions.
The presentation and artistry in singing this song with such perfection will never be surpassed.

She really is singing out her life and pain in these lyrics.
Like that other songs says: "Singing my life with his words. Killing me softly with his song..."
Dame Shirley Bassey was the most loved performer of my late father. Ηe likened her as the nightingale of the worldwide pentagramm and as he also said there never will be another performer like her in history of the music. He used to have many of her vinyl records. And when I hear her lovely voice reminds me a lot of my father and his nice words for her. I wish her to be happy and healthy for all of her life.

She is the ONE & ONLY! Thank you, Shirley! You are my eternity!
It’s actually really easy what she is doing. But the way she delivers it is magnificent.
It's easy from the standpoint that it's an easy song for Shirley to sing. Shirley's delivery is simply the icing on the cake. With that said, there really aren't that many POP songs that this lady has stayed away from over the past 7 decades. Sometimes, she would tell her musical conductor that she just couldn't sing the song. But, it was more about her having to learn the words and music as Shirley did not read music. Once she learned the song, the singing part was easy for her. She has always had the pipes to sing anything.
The best female singer in my life, and I’m 83. You can understand every word diction perfect.
