The fact that Astrid graduated top of her class at Oxford and in real life, Gemma Chan ACTUALLY went to Oxford.
Well nobody plays that role better than her.
Oxford folk are so "snoshy" that they say "first" or even "double-first" when they mean top of the class.

My favorite thing is that the earrings were specifically worn by an Empress at her "Self-Anointed Coronation" and by the end of the movie, Astrid has embraced herself and stopped trying to wilt for her husband, so when she puts them back on, once again, a powerful woman is wearing them as part of her self-anointed coronation.
The symbolism is real!

If you’re a billionaire, you’re not grounded and down to earth because you’re sitting on more money than you could spend in multiple lifetimes while countless people go hungry. In the book, Michael (who is a much more sympathetic character than in the movie) actually says exactly this about the Khoos’ wedding.
Astrid herself apparently comes to realise this in the third book and travels to a poorer part of Asia to help people.

TOTALLY warps him and he begins employing corporeal punishment with Cassian. Then he spends the third book blackmailing her into a large divorce settlement.
I like Astrid a lot, my main gripe with the movie was how much of her story was cut (the book and movie had two totally different purposes/goals, so it made sense). It's not so much that she realizes that money is bad (like, if you're looking for a critique of capitalism, these books are not for you), it's that she stops trying to please everyone all the time. She builds a life for herself (and Cassian) outside of Singapore on a remote island with a poorer population. In China Rich Girlfriend there's a character who's actually a great example of how Astrid COULD HAVE turned out but didn't.

I really liked the film, but it really bothered me how Nick's character was so one dimensional about shocking Rachel with his rich lifestyle (he just casually takes her over there, basically feeding her to the wolves, expecting her to sit at the back during the wedding, etc) and he wasn't incensed that his ex was being horrible to Rachel. I mean... it just didn't feel realistic. Then again, some men are that clueless... haha. My two cents.
The reason anyone was interested at all in this story was because of this sudden revelation about his family. All of a sudden being thrown into this world of luxury and scandals and backstabbing, that's the whole appeal. The writer could have found a better reason he was hiding all of this and a better reason as to why he thought she wouldn't be a target, but let's be honest, this wasn't the best written story to begin with. He is the way he is because he is a fantasy everyone wishes in their lives, the modern version of the prince charming trope. You could say he was just trying to find some sort of semblance for happiness with someone actually genuine, but then again why was he so naive about his family when he knew people could be superficial?
In the book only few really know about young's family wealth. Plus it explained very well in the book.

As long as she donates money and makes sure not to overspend, who cares if she buys million dollar jewellery? Also, her husband cheated on her and he blamed it on her being rich and her family making him feel unworthy of her. She has a right to be mad. Because he shouldn’t be making her feel guilty for her background when she’s supported him as much as she could.

Nowhere did they say they were all empty, but there may be some apartment units that are being rented and she can easily take one for herself. Also, 1.2 million dollars isn’t overspending to people who grow into old money and own billions of dollars. I would say she’s overspending if she ends up gambling and/or getting into a massive debt due to her shopping. Clearly, she’s not. So no, I disagree that she’s vapid (which she is not because she is definitely neither bland nor insipid) and superficial. People buy items according to how much money they have. The more they have, the more insignificant a million dollars can be. Is it her fault that the jewellery was priced at a cost that could’ve fed an impoverished city for a month? No lmao. But it’s probably her level of Swarovski or something. She’s filthy rich. Maybe she shouldn’t have bought it, sure. They could’ve shown another clip of her doing donations. But this scene provided a link to show her home’s dynamics with her husband. There’s not enough from the movie to call her superficial and vapid.
Also, you didn’t address the second part of my reply so I guess you think her husband was right in making her feel guilty even though he cheated, and clearly gaslighted, by BLAMING her for him cheating, saying “you know it’s not my fault things didn’t work out”. Astrid was right in saying what she did because he had NO right in trying to push the blame of his immoral deeds onto her.

I find it fascinating when rich ppl buy stuff for 1,000s or millions of dollars. It's interesting to watch. I don't even want to buy something for $20.
Just a perspective, in their eyes, they are worth billions, so a 1.2m earring is like $1.20
@tiremisu then nothing you buy really holds much value to you. Think about it: our laptop which costs us $500-$1,000 holds a lot higher value then a soda can. To billionaires: a yacht or a mansion is like that soda can. It doesn’t really mean much.
The interesting thing about this moment with Astrid and the designer is that she got the earrings at cost. By putting the earrings away and not publicly wearing them, she didn’t abide by the deal. So her honor was at stake until the end of the movie. This may not seem like a big deal, but in storytelling the little things always matter.

You could make the argument that she would not be able to wear them with just any outfit. And its up to her to decide to when to put it on. Its not like it was agreed that she would wear them at the wedding or at an event. Just that she would wear them

The mirror reflection at 2:50 is the small details that lightens up the movie, director does his job really well. I love this movie and it's Asian representation that we've dealt in life, rich or poor.

I watched a clip from one and all I could see was dystopian future Eddie and Peik Lin.
In the books Allister is portrayed in a much better light. And Kitty Pong too for that matter.

I have to agree. Nick’s NOT a shitty boyfriend, but this was a pretty shitty white lie to tell Rachel. It’s really weird of him to understand that his family position is NOT normal that he hides it ‘til the last minute (which Rachel rightfully calls him out for), yet somehow NOT understand that proposing to her is such a huge life-turn that OTHER PEOPLE have to explain it for him (the bachelor party and his god damn best friend).
Like, is he thinking about how this will affect her at all? Or does he somehow not understand his own lifestyle? She was so freaking clueless that she mistook a cook for the grandmother and Nick went “yeah, let’s marry her into the fam. She definitely doesn’t need more time to adjust and I certainly don’t need to prepare her further”. And this behaviour clearly affects Rachel because she can see that Nick is willing to bend truths to put them in a good light so she doesn’t tell him about his mother’s bullying.
Nick’s communication skills are lacking.

Actually, in the book, Nick has much more cousins. Astrid has 3 brothers, Eddie and Alistair have sister and there are also cousins from Thailand. However Astrid and Alistair are Nick favorite cousins while Edison is the least favorite.

I gotta admit, there is one thing in this scene that bothers me.
Okay, we've established that Rachel and Nick have been dating for a year or so. He's never really mentioned his family--possibly, according to Rachel's mother, because they are poor. He's being a bit obtuse in talking about his cousins, basically talking about what industries they work in (film, finance). But then we get to Astrid and Rachel says, "I remember Astrid."
How do you remember Astrid? You haven't met his family.
She goes on to say that Astrid is who she wants to be "when she grows up." Which means that not only does Rachel know Astrid, she knows OF Astrid. She knows that she's an impressive person. And she knows that Nick is related to her.
Ooor Astrid traveled to New York for any number of reasons and Rachel actually met her so even if she doesn't know Nick's family is wealthy, she'd still be impressed by Astrid, because, well, look at her.
In the first book it's mentioned a few times, that Astrid has been to New York once and met with Rachel and Nick. Rachel was later, when they met again in Singapur, amazed by Astrids appearance and to see her in her "natural habitat".
Also one reason Nick didn't tell Rachel anything about his family is because he was taught by his family not to do so (espicially his grandmother). So most of the new-rich families don't even know about the wealth and existence of the Young family. In the books Peik Lins family for example didn't knew anything about them ^^

peter it was established in the book that astrid met rachael like in march a year before Nicky announced that he was gonna bring rachael over. can't seem to find it but it's in the first book

This movie is incredible. I come in looking for a feast of roasting second generation rich. Turn out its not.
I am slightly confused by the Astrid scene on second viewing. What is this man doing selling million dollar jewelry out of a hotel lobby? Is it the luxury equivalent of those travelling poster sales in college unions?
It was not a hottle lobby but a proper store of jewellery with high security lol . When big luxury brands have fashion shows the rich people who are the most important guest they get to go to behind the stage where big jewellery brands have there set up just for the crazy rich people you should see the crazy rich asian writer goes behind the scene with "Real Crazy Rich asians" you will understand
As Music ARMY said - most high-end jewellery stores have secret rooms at the back of the shop to show-off private collections. That's where the bankers blow-off their bonuses on jewellery for their trophy wives ;)

There's a well known five star hotel here that has its own jewelry shop within the hotel lobby. It's probably something like that.

This applies to their standard products as well as rare or custom pieces. You can book appointments online, but the idea is you'd only make an appointment with the intent to purchase.
