m. 🤫 the next movie is going to based off of China Rich Girlfriend which is mainly centered on Astrid and Charlie with Rachel and Nick periodically included
It’s because the producers felt that Astrid would’ve been leaving Michael for Charlie. They wanted to solely focus on Astrid’s independence and growth as a person. Without that scene, it makes Astrid’s journey a lot stronger Edit: Although I will say that the scene is very very important for the next movie and is very cute and lovable

All these scenes were from the book and were so important. even though they weren’t needed in the movie’s final version, they added the complexity that was in the book.

It would've definitely slowed down the movie so the removal was definitely the better choice and making it a montage made the proposal scene so much more powerful because we don't know what was happening during the montage
I know I thought it was a crucial scene. This scene showed how much she disapproved of Rachel. It was either Rachel or losing her son. In the book Eleanor doesn’t approve them and they aren’t engaged. In the start of the second book they are engaged. In the movie I was so moved at the party at the top the building in the end where Rachel and Eleanor looked at each other which was a sign of closure. It just hurts me that Eleanor doesn’t approve in the book.
I think because that scene would have taken away from the scene she had with Rachel earlier during the mahjong game. After that scene we see her with Nick and then Nick proposes again with her ring. That implies that Rachel got through to her. The scene with Nick and his mother, makes it look more like it was him that changed her mind as opposed to Rachel.
I was so critical of the closing credits where they listed Harry, and he only had those few seconds of actual on screen time....but if they had included this, it would have seemed better.......but loved the dance scene
They should’ve kept the scene with Nick and his mom having that deep convo! I wondered what caused her to give up her ring, so nick could propose to Rachael with it!

She is a NYU professor , anyone would be proud of that accomplishment. Rachel's mother is correct, you are different, you grew up here. The hotel Nick and Rachel stayed at looks like Raffles in Singapore .
The part about Nick and his mum arguing because she left him in Amah's care... that hit me hard. I had to leave my son to my in-laws for a few years because "it was for the best"... and hearing Nick's response made me cry... I never expected that. I feel guilty as a mother.

The Nick and mom scene is very accurate about Asian family/culture. Saving face, high social status, what mom and dad did for the family, and etc is a big deal in Asian society (depends if they're about that life or not, but majority are unless you're like me who doesn't give a damn about it). Same thing with Rachel and her mom talking about being Chinese. My "meeting the family" moment turned into a roasting session as the girl's family viewed my ethnicity as less superior, my poor family background, having no parents, and etc. relationship was done that night like instant ramen noodles. Even trying to hang out with asian students from asia was weird AF as chinese students stayed with chinese, koreans with koreans, japanese with japanese, and etc etc. it was a weird position to be in while in college as the only odd ball since none of them wanted to hangout with me. i always loved it when guys ask me about asian girls because my answer to them was, "Bruh... if we went to a asian club. i will bet you $100 bucks you go can get a girl before me because they want nothing with me." of course they found it hard to believe until we did go lol some of them got married to asian girlfriend and are hating the tiger wife and in-laws (i did warn them). As for me? it's been nearly a decade of not dating. fml lol i didn't have to watch this movie but still did only because i wanted a good laugh.
I'm sorry you went through that. I hope you find someone when the time comes, if you so desire. My brother went through similar situation, except my parents were the ones who judged his now-wife for being of another Asian race they didn't like, and basing all their views on old and outdated stereotypes. Eventually they came around and saw her for who she was as a person. I hope you don't have to go through the same thing again :(
I went through a similar thing too. The roles was reverse. My Korean MIL got pregnant through a married man. She kept calling me a slut until she found out both of my parents have careers. When my parents weren't willing to give her a big check when ever she demanded it, she told my husband I was bad for their family image. eventual my husband cut her off.
That Nick+Eleanor scene was important, I suspect the lighting being so uneven and bad-looking may have been the reason for the cut. It didn't look polished at all with the harsh lighting fading to soft and back.
1:40 I love mom's character. Who knows who she was when she moved to the USA but she is such a great mix of the asian culture and western culture. A great mix.
I think the dialog scenes between Nick and his mom should have been included. It shows just the complexity of relationship within Asian family. Also Astrid dancing with Mike Chang (Glee) should have been there.
I'm glad all these scenes were cut out. The first two; Karaoke and Haggling are too much of a cringing Asian trope. Astrid to meet the guy at the end is much more interesting, gives me hope there might be a sequel.
I think that's like a universal trait for any immigrant parent tbh. I went to this move because I wanted to get out of the house and there was a $5 special. Was far more entertaining than I expected.

Why not? She succeeded at what appears to be an indy shop. It's not common in chain stores but all you need is a manager override at the register. Think price matches, mislabeled items, etc. Unless you're not from the States...?
I agree with you. A "top real estate agent" probably wouldn't randomly insist on some shop lowering a price because they're paying cash. Especially in New York.
I think it's good that the scene with Nick and his mother wasn't included because it would kinda negate the scene with Nick and Rachel in the car where he showed he understood exactly why his mother made the sacrifice to have him be raised by his grandmother- in order for him to stay on the grandmother's good side in the long run. This cut repeats that message, but seems very dramatic. Their silent scene in the movie spoke more, I feel. Maybe in the book it was okay because it's the book, but it doesn't fit with the short time the movie has.
I do wish these were in the movie - but the movie does clip along so maybe it was the pacing with in there - but why they didn't include the scene with Nick and his Mom I will never know!

I’m so mad they robbed Astrid and Charlie like that! They are my favorite couple than Rachel and Nick. After watching the movie I kept asking where was Charlie and knowing they cut him of the movie makes me so mad. 2 years and I’m still so mad ugh they were robbed! Justice for Astrid and Charlie for the next movie!
wait. Why did they remove the Nick and mom fight. That conversation hit deep and relates to most of us asian kids. It also speaks volume! I cried at the part where Nick said he needed her presence as a mom. Most asian kids couldn't even say that to their parents who left them to their grandparents care. Tiger in-laws are common in the asian household so I understand why the mom made a sacrifice to give his son away. But when she said that leaving him was worth it, it hurts for Nick (which it also hurt for us, asian kids). That classic “We sacrifice a lot for you.” That guilt tripping became our fuel to prioritize family before ourselves and others. And the part where the mom also says, “what about others that relies on us?” It explains why asians are collectivist because asian should stand as a community.
I agree with most of the removals except the dance of Astrid with the new guy. Personally I think the movie ending could be extend a little more (for a better happier closure) with more cheerful dancing shots (as seen in this video). Other cut scenes I could see why being removed as they have pushes the Asian stereotypes too far they appear sonewhat single-minded
The way Nick and His mum have conversations is quite exactly like how my big brothers and me spoke with our Parents. So, my eldest brother wants to married this girl, and show her to my family buy my mum didn't approved it, like seriously my mum even went far to "how can she understands our culture and traditions? How can she become da furen of our household? How can she bear our name?" When i watch the scene it makes me cringe asf, like, how similiar this. And sadly, my bro didn't married the girl.
We were robbed of the scene with Astrid and Charlie. Robbed!!!! They pull off the chemistry between the two so easily.

So Mike Chang is still good at dancing after all these years
8:25 he's actually dancing with Ms. Philippines 😭☠️
No one cares about philippines and your filipino pride ok
if nobody really cared, why would my comment have 3 likes and if u don't care, why bother reply to it. I don't even remember commenting this😆 oh well
I'm so glad that they took that first scene out.
Wow Henry looks so Iban in the Nick and his mom scene
Even though these scenes didn't make it to the movie it honestly makes me want to go and read the book.
These scenes should have not been deleted this is the context we need to understand more of the film
11:23 You can take the boy out of Lima, but Glee club is eternal. Mike Chang moving up in the world after leaving Lima.
he’ll always have those skills
That scene with Harry Shum Jr!!!!
3:02 funny cause she's one of the "overseas Asians" hahaha I love tan kheng hua she's such a great actor
How can she bear our name?"
When i watch the scene it makes me cringe asf, like, how similiar this. And sadly, my bro didn't married the girl.
GHAD THEY SHOULDNT REMOVE THE SCENE OF NICK AND HIS MOM THO IM PISSED!!!! IT ADDED MORE DRAMA TO THE FILM
I remember seeing some of these scenes in the actual movie when I first watched it on a Delta flight in 2019
Damn it jian-yang you're living the dream!
Right at the last 5 seconds of the bachelor party scene you hear the Queen CL's "Hello Bitches!"
Why they cut out Nick and his mom's fight, it's quite important for the turning point in the movie.
they should've added the dance scene because that is the happiest I've seen astrid. period
wondered how they bailed out of that bachelor party, Astrid and Captain Charlie had some good dance moves.
