That's honestly amazing achievement, and thanks for providing your insight. Getting that first paycheck from RUclips is one of my favorite memories. I still remember it, there was lots of emotions involved. If it wasn't for my consistency and hard work (and a little bit of Famester of course), I probably wouldn't have made anything.
I make $0 and yet I create content pretty regularly, I don't even care anymore as I realized that this chasing profits obsession was forcing creativity and that made it more like a real job. I just want to have fun with content creation, that is more valuable to me than anything else. In my older age, I find more value in relaxation and fun than I do in turning a profit. I got off of the treadmill...
As someone who recently got monetized that’s a great approach. People can tell if you’re in it for the money and you’re making stuff just so that you can get views. People generally don’t like desperation like to watch they like to watch. I got monetized from a few videos, taking off and getting thousands of views. The algorithm will do its job and you do yours.
Katie! You have just explained profit breakdown AND taxes better than 99% of the accountants I have dealt with (there have been many...) over my career. The business owners I have worked with are so overwhelmed and confused by their numbers (often because of said accountants), so huge kudos to you for being so confident with financials. For me, when I look at a business owners future success, knowing this information at the level you do = long term success in any business.
These are the type of creators that I’ll always want to support. Humble, intelligent and grateful. Thank you Katie for your tips and transparency, you are helping TONS of us out there 💗💗
I completely resonate with what you said at the end there! just bought a 400 square ft house with a 2012 car and trying to travel as cheap as I can so I can go as often as possible. Huge respect for you choosing to live this way too, whenever I try to explain this to people a lot don't understand ❤
This is the first piece of your content I've ever seen and I'm totally awestruck by your honesty, intelligence and prudence. Not to mention the clarity with which you presented the information. I have no plans to be a content creator but this video (especially the end) should be viewed by EVERY young person today. The wisdom and the gratitude - secret sauce for life. I don't need to wish you success because your values and mindset has got that covered no matter which way the wind blows. Love from your Commonwealth cousin 🇦🇺
Love how open you are about this - it's proper view of creator income. Also that you are so very grounded and taking such a sustainable view. Smart lady Katie
I always value your transparency. I have no plans on being on social media full-time, but this was definitely inspirational for me as I'm currently self-employed as a copywriter! ❤ Sending love from Jamaica
Thank you Katie! I’m happy to see you explaining this, as so many people think we entrepreneurs and content creators make sooo much money out of “nothing” and it is, as you said, because we often talk about revenue only. When I started my business 24 years ago I made 78k€ but paid for myself 12k€ a year. So many people were thinking I was so wealthy and I could barely make my ends meet. It’s so important to explain transparently what is the truth.
I'm SO thankful you covered the whole stream of finances! NO ONE does that and it's SO refreshing as someone who is working on building her own business.
As I’m considering the potential for starting a business, this is hugely valuable. Thank you for your transparency and breaking everything down; I learned a lot!
Love your transparency and the fact that you HAVEN'T changed when your income did. This is soooo amazing. So many creators in your niche change when they get more $$$$ and I love that you keep it simple and it's so relatable!
Found your account one video earlier, and I’ve been binge watching your videos. I love your transparency, but also I love how careful you are with your money. I am very considerate about where and how I spend my money, and that’s because I didn’t grow up with money. I kept nodding my head “yes” every minute because I kept agreeing with you! Keep it up!!
Katie I’m loving your more recent videos, you can just see how you’ve leveled up and your mindset around RUclips is so relatable and “normal”. Thankyou for being so open!
This is my favorite video to date. Thank you for being so transparent, and being so sensible and forward thinking -it's a breath of fresh air to see in today's world ❤
That was awesome! Thank you for sharing! I don’t think I want to be a creator “full time” because I’m nearing retirement age but it is still so cool to see the reality of all that goes into it. I truly appreciate your honesty and transparency. 👍🏼 And think you’ve accomplished a LOT! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank soo mcuh for this video❤ it was soo interesting to see the process from profit to the money that you actually take home and the end of the year. It's also refreshing seeing some saying "i have more than enough", i don't need more money to be happy. Also quick note: i really enjoy the change of camera angle and background. It really kept myself focus on what you were saying😊
Great video! Many business owners use their business account for frivilous personal things and then struggle making payroll. I love your smart tactical approach to keeping your business fluid and stable. Well done!
So comprehensive! Really appreciate this. A lot of people don't talk about expenses and taxes and they are sooo important. Part-time vanlife is my dream too. :D
This was incredibly eye-opening to me! On many levels. 1st, it blew me away how much of your revenue was with Brand deals and the digital product was fairly low. 2nd, it really showed me I need to do an LLC with my business. 3rd. The money smarts and your self-control to pay yourself modestly with a view to the future. Really appreciate this. This transparency really puts it into perspective what ~ 500,000 means in real terms. We imagine RUclipsrs making this revenue to be living the high life because we don’t get the full picture of what that money means.
This video is an absolute gem for anyone starting their freelance journey with no experience! 🙌 The tips on building a portfolio from scratch and finding your first clients are pure gold. Networking advice is spot on - leveraging your existing network and joining online communities can make such a difference. Thanks for sharing such practical and encouraging advice.
This was so great. I recently stopped following a content creator because of her wild spending habits and disconnect with how many people actually live. Your content is relatable and open and I appreciate that so much. ❤
This is so great Katie!! 👏🏼 Thank you for sharing and I think SOOOOO many people need to hear the wisdom of your mindset and not making money then spending every penny
So my question would be are you saving/investing for retirement within that personal salary, or does that come out of the business profit as well? For me, I was able to start saving for retirement via a SEP IRA last year (idk if it's different in Canada) and that's really been awesome to reduce my taxable income in the business, and not have it come out of my personal salary (which like you is around 50k US). I also have an S-corp structure which oh my god has saved me so much money on taxes. Freelancers really need to know this stuff, thanks for sharing!
Girl, thank you!! Your approach to this kind of video is so much more helpful than people just speaking about revenue streams. The last part about planning for the long term was especially valuable.
I admire your transparency! I've been thinking about making a breakdown video for my business, and months later, I'm still thinking... but you've just helped me get one big step closer. Good luck with your business!
Considering all these expenses, it's amazing you survived before you had all those brand deals. I am so happy you're able to make a living as a creator. Good for you!
Your content is some of my favorite, but this video is my all time favorite you’ve put out. Thank you so so so much for outlining all of these details and for always being authentic and having the courage to be vulnerable. This was so incredibly helpful for me and I’m sure so many others on this journey of being content creators. Well done indeed!
New subscriber 😊 Being successful in this way frightens me. I love your content and visual aids. You speak clearly and slowly. I love your plan and forward thinking. Cheers to your success and may you double your business profits this year. 😊❤
Thanks for sharing the breakdown! People love to toss around net revenue to look impressive but the reality is that your profit margins are the most important part of your business model. I am making significantly less revenue now but my profit margins have increased so my take home is actually better 😅🙌🏽
Thank you so much for your transparency. Lifestyle creep is REAL! And it's hard to not want the flashy house or car. Life can happen at any moment. And while we don't want to live in that mentality, it's so important to be wise + thinking ahead! Thank you for sharing your honest thoughts about the longevity of this career. It's so new that it's hard to tell how sustainable it is. Which is an important lesson for many of us to learn.
Thank you for being so transparent. I thought I'd listen to this episode in the background, but was totally drawn in from beginning to end. You shared such useful information, and as a Canadian, I appreciate your take on taxes and investments.
You nailed it. Forming a Corp doesn't necessarily save as there are additional costs and headaches, but it allows one to postpone income for down the road. You can also use Net Income After Tax from your biz financials to qualify for more financing. A sole proprietor generally writes their income down to to the floor, and thus most often times needs alternative financing. Great video and breakdown!
Wow! This is one of the best videos I've actually seen about this. Thank you for posting it. I'm playing in the space but I never really dedicated myself. Partially because my real-time job is as a producer for commercials and that can take up a lot of time and then I lose motivation after a large shoot. But thank you for posting. I'm looking forward to seeing more from you
Awesome video, Katie!! I really enjoyed the style of this one, it feels like you had fun with it and I am loving the videos from the van. Also I really appreciate the transparency and nitty gritty details because that's what no one talks about!
Love, love, love this video! You are an inspiration and so fun to listen to and follow through your journey. I'm so glad I found your channel. Thank you!
I really appreciate the breakdown and transparency of the money side of things. It puts clarity on the financial expectations for new RUclipsrs like me, which helps me keep realistic goals. Thank you so much!
I've been watching you for years on and off and never subscribed until now. This video gave me so many ideas on how to scale my own business as a content creator so thank you for that! Sending love xx
Hi Katie!! SUPERB VIDEO! As a teacher, I commend your paper charts and visuals. Thanks for bringing me back to reality and reminding me to stop spending! I have been spending a lot lately not towards my journey but other things. I will make sure to slowly build my business same as your mindset and to think about my future and my kids. God bless you always!
Thank you for the transparency and honesty! It really helps other creators to understand the business side and I appreciate the wisdom of living below at the end!
I love what you said in the end. Most of us have more than enough but our society is based on growth and we always feel like we should do more, earn more and take the next step. Therefore it’s so much more important to see what we already have and be grateful ❤️
Katie, this is amazing. SO much insight and wisdom. Nice to hear the breakdown from a Canadian creator. Love your out look of "more than enough". Well done on your success. This encourages me as I consider future ideas for transformation of my career.
I love this video so so much on so many different levels. I used to run a coaching company that made $2.4M (my team expenses alone were $80K/m), and I know what it's like to be SUPER grateful to have lived well below my means because I got hit with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and stopped being able to work. I had to lay off my team and shut down my business and luckily I had enough put aside to be able to go on a 2 year sabbatical/healing journey. I learned so much. And one of the main lessons was exactly what you said: success is a privilege and you never know when the Universe will throw you a curveball and you'll have to start from $0 again. So DEFINITELY build WEALTH instead of trying to get rich. Wealth is what you save - it's the invisible part. The part no one sees because it's money you DIDN'T spend. I love many things about you Katie, but your groundedness and humility and realness is what I come back for. xoxo
🎉🎉🎉 I’m not sure how long I’ve been subscribed to your channel but I Definitely watch each and every video you put out. I get lazy sometimes and forget to leave a comment. So I just wanted to Thank you for everything you share with us here. I’m still trying to figure out my own niche to start my own RUclips channel. So please keep on filming and I’ll keep on watching. Blessings from Paso Robles, California, Carlos
I really love your videos and how much info you offer. You are very detailed and clear in what you are expressing. You honestly make this all lo so easy. You are truly appreciated❤
Thanks for sharing your course. I watch so many RUclipsrs but when asked how did they start they usually don't share anything. I'm definitely excited about getting your course. New subscriber 💜
Yes the breakdown on taxes is HUGE! I keep a lot of my money within my business accounts for the same reason you spoke about. You are so top tier Katie.😉
Hi from a fellow Canadian 👋This was so helpful, thanks! The numbers were fascinating, but the mindset behind WHY you choose to only pay yourself a certain amount was particularly helpful 😊
Thank you for your transparency! I really appreciate your candor. I wanted to say though that no one ever talks about taxes!! for someone who has 10k subs on my other account, i always get emails asking to gift me stuff but for no pay but they want a video.. i suppose its worth incurring the gifting tax if its something cool like a pelaton but where is the logistical line? i wish more creators would talk about the tax implications (no matter the state or country) of receiving gifts with instructions or just straight PR over $25 and what they recommend. Thanks again.
Thanks for the transparency, it’s nice to finally see someone talking about net profit and not just gross income 👏
That's honestly amazing achievement, and thanks for providing your insight. Getting that first paycheck from RUclips is one of my favorite memories. I have the same story. I stopped making videos regularly but I do know I should continue.

Spot on Katie. Living below your means is a fantastic way to go. Great video. ❤
If only government was this transparent. Thanks for the break-down so so helpful.
This is my favorite video to date. Thank you for being so transparent, and being so sensible and forward thinking -it's a breath of fresh air to see in today's world ❤

Fantastic, a true bricks n mortar business would have to give both on a balance sheet so good to see someone being totally transparent! ❤
To be fair, RUclipsrs also have to give all the information.
But literally none of them are required to do so on a RUclips video.
Katie!! thanks for this video!! It held so much to see it all broken down. Your grounded energy is so appreciated.
Super smart strategy and great to hear someone online share how they are living below their means and planning for the future! Awesome job!!!

Super nice to see people who are grateful to what they have like you do. That is also so important to not to fall into the "high expectations" trap.
I loved this. It’s refreshing to see someone provide real info that includes the not-so-fun, yet, unavoidably truths of expenses and taxes.
I admire your transparency! I've been thinking about making a breakdown video for my business, and months later, I'm still thinking... but you've just helped me get one big step closer. Good luck with your business!
Great video, thanks for breaking these numbers up for us. It was really helpful, realistic and transparent.
Absolutely love the transparency here!! One of the best videos on this topic that I’ve seen
You are so awesome Katie! Thank you for being so transparent about your business.
I love how realistic and grounded this is
Thank you Katie. Really appreciate your honesty. I'm just starting out on my youtube journey and your insights are so so valuable.
You are so incredibly smart and responsible! Such an inspiration 💚💚💚

As new creator and as a Canadian this very helpful thank you so much , great things to have in your back pocket
This was a great video. Thanks for being so open and honest. It’s really helpful 💗
This is one of the best videos that I've seen that realistically gives as breakdown of responsibilities. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your transparency here! No one else talks about net profit in this way - Business income does not equal to take-home pay.
I really appreciate the breakdown and transparency of the money side of things. It puts clarity on the financial expectations for new RUclipsrs like me, which helps me keep realistic goals. Thank you so much!

Incredibly transparent and helpful, thank you. (Also, side note: I've never seen someone write the letter "S" like that!)
You’re wise. Sadly enough, some people get into business without understanding the financial implications of what they’re doing.
Thanks Katie, you are an inspiration!
Congratulations on your continued success. All the best, D
you have no idea how helpful this is. seriously
Thank you for the transparency and honesty! It really helps other creators to understand the business side and I appreciate the wisdom of living below at the end!
I loved this video, your transparency and the realness!
Wow I just found you today but I think I already love you. Thanks for sharing!! It’s so impressive the way you manage your money! 👏🏼
Thank you for being so transparent. I thoroughly enjoy your content.
thank you for sharing and being so transparent. Really encouraging to keep going.
This encourages me as I consider future ideas for transformation of my career.
this was so eye opening! thank you for being honest, encouraging, & sharing your wisdom! ❤
Man this video is so good with so much value and insight. Thank you Katie!
This was so helpful and insightful, thank you very much for sharing openly.
First time watching ❤. Love your breakdown, wisdom and honesty with your perspective and preparation! Thank you
I love this video so so much on so many different levels. I used to run a coaching company that made $2.4M (my team expenses alone were $80K/m), and I know what it's like to be SUPER grateful to have lived well below my means because I got hit with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and stopped being able to work.

I really love your videos and how much info you offer. You are very detailed and clear in what you are expressing. You honestly make this all lo so easy. You are truly appreciated❤
Success is never for the faint hearted🙏🎉🎉Congratulations for working tirelessly for a decade without letting up!
👏👏 you’re an inspiration! And so financially responsible. So helpful you sharing this thank you! 😊
Thanks for sharing your course. I watch so many RUclipsrs but when asked how did they start they usually don't share anything. I'm definitely excited about getting your course. New subscriber 💜
I love this transparency and realness!! Thank you for these tips ❤
Yes the breakdown on taxes is HUGE! I keep a lot of my money within my business accounts for the same reason you spoke about. You are so top tier Katie.😉
Thank you for being real! This is true value-add and great content!
Love the transparency, but also, the way you showed it all was easy to follow! Thanks for another helpful video!
I love that you diversify your income and are not fully dependent on RUclips revenue.
SO helpful Katie, and such great financial advice to not get swept up in lifestyle creep
Love this real perspective. Most RUclipsrs talk just about the top line
Hi from a fellow Canadian 👋This was so helpful, thanks! The numbers were fascinating, but the mindset behind WHY you choose to only pay yourself a certain amount was particularly helpful 😊
Bless you for all of the visuals in explaining everything 😂 you made this super easy to breakdown and understand. Thank you!
Your humility is inspiring. ❤
