See? They're applauding the DJ. Not the music, not the musician, not the creator, but the medium. This is it. The birth of rave culture. The beatification of the beat. The dance age. This is the moment when even the white man starts dancing. Welcome to Manchester.
I had pointless arguments with trendy's 20 odd years before it was cool to be vegan and have a top knot. However. If you ever went. And I'm talking about when it was off its nuts* *been a few shot nights there. I'm sorry. But. It was... THE greatest night out EVER* *THUNDERDOME was ace too
Definitely not the berth of rave culture, this is AFTER the Chicago Dj's showed up and taught them how to mix, and allot more than that. Stuff that was already two years old in Chicago (multiple beat layering). And never came above what was going on in Chicago turntablism. It started in Chicago New Wave clubs not House clubs.
Don't get me wrong... Chicago DJ's are great. But even Julian Jumpin' Perez and Bad Boy Bill in the mid-80's didn't receive any accolades as performers or as recording artists until 1992, when they started doing radio play. The Manchester DJ's in 1988 were the very first in history to get radio play and sell out club venues. London, New York, LA, and Chicago followed suit in 92', literally taking House DJ's from the house parties/high school dances, and into mainstream radio and record deals.
I hate it. I was into Music, Post Punk music, Dance music, the whole bit, before this. House/Rave pummels everything. It's just been a 'now' ever since, and people have been going back to various pre-House/Rave sounds and styles. Oh, and the White man danced long before this.

I always thought he was saying "Welcome to Madchester" at the end.
For anyone curious, the two tracks in this are:
Happy Mondays - Tart Tart
A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray
I wish I could've been there. What a scene.

no but it was the birth of rave culture in the UK with madchester and acid house music
Manchester took the music out of clubs that are for black, gay men and made it music for everyone.
