How I Designed ● a Squirrel Proof BirdFeeder

  • I'm making another squirrel proof bird feeder! But before I do, I need to find out what size of opening a squirrel cannot get through. I used a simple set-up to determine that size. The squirrels were very co-operative and were great volunteers in helping me determine their limits. No squirrels were harmed in the making of this video! Squirrels are smart and can get into most squirrel proof bird feeders. But if you design it properly they won't be able to enter this bird feeder.

      Interesting. There are 2 sides to that coin though. They say the average attention of a youtube viewer is about 2:30. A lot of youtubers try to keep it as close to that as possible. @@chrisnotap There's two types of viewers, I guess. One that wants a quick shot of entertainment, and the other that wants 31 minutes of watching a guy clean a car. Consider that long format YT videos replace actual TV shows, and you'll know where I'm coming from, but others might just want..no, NEED to know QUICKLY how wide an opening a squirrel can fit through.

      Rods are different than a hole. In my other test, squirrels barely get in a 2 inch hole. My hope is birds can flatten themselves a bit as they land on the rods. It's all about experimenting and enjoying using your noggin! On my other feeder, the bluejays and cardinals just put their heads in to get the seeds through the 1.5" copper pipe pieces.

    Hows the feeder doing? I don't want to be a nay sayer but I think you'll eventually see the squirrel gets mad and chews the whole thing to saw dust. Or he'll run down to the city and find a female (they are a bit smaller) so she can do his stealing for him. Squirrels are really crafty but if you cut a 1 gallon glass jug in half and mount it on the pole your feeder is on, that will keep most out as long as the pole is not close ro anything they can jump from. Don't know any cure for that one that used to run around with the moose when we were kids... Was his name Rocky maybe?

They aren't gross and creepy like rats. They are a very cool animal and make the cutest sounds and faces and poses. Keep the love for them too or start to grow it. Birds are great yes. They are cute but I don't see why they should be fed on the basis of them being cute when their job is to be scavengers. Birds on the other hand are at constant threat due to invasive species like cats.
      You really should look into official sources as to whether or not squirrels should be fed.
      But to summerize the official responses from people who studied wildlife all their life. It's best not to. It can lead to their death by associating the food with humans thus not seeing humans as a predator, attracts more squirrels into an area than the area can support with its vegetation/greenery, make it easier to spread disease due to the congregations and lastly create a reliance on food.
      To top it off, squirrels are extremely destructive when it comes to property and can attract rats.

    • @berealsupportive2744
      @berealsupportive2744 3 года назад +2

      Squirrels and rats act very different and look very different. Squirrels are very intelligent, friendly too even if not trained as a pet like a rat firvexampls. Rats have beedy eyes and tiny ears and not thevssne face and squirrels have a nice fluffy body and tail. Rats are sneaky and come around at night. Squirrels are asleep at night like us and out during the day. Yes cats are a bird predator and why we should feed birds to help but cats and dogs also hunt squirrels. Yes squirrels can do bad stuff to things but not if the home owners make sure to have everything secure like wires fully covered and all. My little point is to maybe leave some peanuts around once in a while if a few squirrels live in your back yard. I'm not suggesting anything crazy like bunches of food. I guess when I said left overs it seemed much. Sorry I meant that small idea. You can only scavenge the ground for song long until it's empty. Unless the tree has things naturally dropping to the ground for the little guys. Thank you

    Ooohhh this is horrible. How dare you upload a shorter video you already uploaded on your own channel! I am so offended... and clearly you lack any scientific knowledge, and we as your viewers have very high standards!! Please never do this again. I am very confused...

      Lol!! I realized afterwards that the first one was too long and decided to re-upload it. I will be better in the future!
