How I Designed ● a Squirrel Proof BirdFeeder

- I'm making another squirrel proof bird feeder! But before I do, I need to find out what size of opening a squirrel cannot get through. I used a simple set-up to determine that size. The squirrels were very co-operative and were great volunteers in helping me determine their limits. No squirrels were harmed in the making of this video! Squirrels are smart and can get into most squirrel proof bird feeders. But if you design it properly they won't be able to enter this bird feeder.

deja vu?!
I'm constantly learning with my youtube channel and realized afterwards that the first video was far too long at almost 7 minutes. I decided to re-edit it. Thanks.
@@chrisnotap I was okay with the first video as well =)
I've just been in this place before
Should I be smelling burnt toast about now, because I could swear Ive seen a very similar version of this video on your last update? (albeit a bit shorter...)
Lol! You're correct! I'm constantly learning with my youtube channel and realized afterwards that the first video was far too long at almost 7 minutes. I decided to re-edit it. Thanks.
Yeah, I was wondering about that first video too.
You probably just have toast in your pocket...
Same video as last? What’s going on Chris?
I'm constantly learning with my youtube channel and realized afterwards that the first video was far too long at almost 7 minutes. I decided to re-edit it. Thanks.
@@chrisnotap I prefered the long format. Remember that RUclips is a place for entertainment, so the longer the better. :)
Interesting. There are 2 sides to that coin though. They say the average attention of a youtube viewer is about 2:30. A lot of youtubers try to keep it as close to that as possible. I have both versions still on my channel long and short. I will see which one performs best in the coming months. Thanks.
@@chrisnotap There's two types of viewers, I guess. One that wants a quick shot of entertainment, and the other that wants 31 minutes of watching a guy clean a car. Consider that long format YT videos replace actual TV shows, and you'll know where I'm coming from, but others might just want..no, NEED to know QUICKLY how wide an opening a squirrel can fit through.
You are totally correct. It's a gamble as to which you choose. The RUclips algorithm rolls on! Thanks.
@Chris Notap Did you ever make a new bird feeder? It doesn't seem to have been uploaded yet. We're all looking forward to it!
Where's the new feeder design with the bars instead of tubes!? I'm curious to see it!
Didn't you release this video a week ago? I thought this was going to be the build video.
I'm constantly learning on my youtube channel and realized afterwards that the first video was far too long. I decided to re-edit it.
@@chrisnotap I'll agree with you on that. The first one was a bit long.
Keep up the good work.
@@chrisnotap When will the next video showing the build be published? I don't want to miss it. I spent last summer visiting various big box stores looking for a copper pipe with a 1 1/2 inch diameter but never did find the correct pipe. Thus I never built the glass bird feeder you featured in your older video.
I've built a prototype and experimenting in the next few weeks to see what works and what doesn't. Interesting so far. Not sure when I will have a video finished. Best is to subscribe that way you won't miss it. Thanks.
I was hoping this would end with a "Squirrel Catapult". Endless entertainment!
Or how about a squirrel ejection seat? Endless possibilities!
Awww, I hope you keep one the little scoundrels can get to, they’re so cute and hungry too 🥰. Thanks for the great knowledge!
Awww
Hey ms J , just feed squirrels and rodents on yr own channel. I’d like to make stew outta them.
Don't need to watch any comedy show > This channel makes me laugh > keep up the great work Chris.
Your designs are so cool to see! I love how things unfold, I love your ideas! Great video :)
Highly compelling!
I think you would have saved a lot of seeds by going the other way and starting with a hole smaller toward bigger until the squirrel can get access. But I guess it would have made it less entertaining. Thanks for the tip! And also, I was wondering if bird would not better like to enter the feeder through vertical bars rather than horizontal.Any birds experts around?
all the dislikes on this video are from squirrels
The squirrel must think he's getting fatter, lol
Merci from Montreal, Canada.
That’s awesome!😄
Thanks for the metric equivalent labels.
Let me try like this 😊!
good job.
So super nice
Glad to see you’re posting again Chris. Any updates on your squirrel-proof bird feeder?
It's still in the testing phase along with other experiments I'm doing.
Hi Chris. Any updates on the new squirrel proof bird feeder design?
Not yet. I'm marinating on what shape, size and the look..
5,000 volts works really well. They don't come back for awhile and when they do they avoid the feeder.
Search "Hackaday 5,000 Volt Birdfeeder".
This video was awesome! So clever, it makes me want to do the same sort of experiments and make my own feeder! Keep up the great content :)
Cutest videos! Keep em comin!
Thank you! Will do!
Kudos, your videos are so informative with high quality video camera and sound. 👍
I appreciate that!
Where can I buy this?
That's not a squirrel! That's the groundhog from Caddyshack! I was worried you were going to need to do the magician sawing the squirrel in half trick to get him out. He just needed that little bit of extra incentive to squeeze out. Great video!
Thank u I have recently became a birdi and these squirrels been driving me crazy to keep them out
Interesting that you started at 70mm. Do you have Condors or wedge tailed eagles flying around your yard? Great vid mate
Lol! Yes but I had to get them used to the apparatus in order to get them to enter it without hesitation each time so I decided to start big. I did the same in the last video except in that video I used circles. They squeezed past a circle hole at 2" ( 51mm ) but they couldn't get past a circle hole at 1" 7/8 ( 48mm )
What size bird is this for? I see alot of medium sized birds in my yard, (blue Jay's, robins,Cardinals) and they couldn't fit through there any better than the squirrel...
Rods are different than a hole. In my other test, squirrels barely get in a 2 inch hole. My hope is birds can flatten themselves a bit as they land on the rods. It's all about experimenting and enjoying using your noggin! On my other feeder, the bluejays and cardinals just put their heads in to get the seeds through the 1.5" copper pipe pieces.
@@chrisnotap cool, thanks for the explanation. Looking forward to the next one.
When in this video you did show 1-1/4” is perfect diameter of copper ring, why you are using 1-1/2” diameter rings in your DIY Bird feeder video?
Circles and bars are different and they can maneuver each differently at different sizes.
Imaginative camera positions & editing.
Hi Chris when can we expect the new design?.........the squirrels have taken over our feeder and the sparrows are complaining 😢
5,000 volts works really well. Search "5,000 Volt Birdfeeder".
Did you finish the new bird feeder?
Still in experimental stage.
Problem is, that size is only just big enough for the smallest birds, blue tits, wrens etc.
Nice experiment but it shows that squirrels are able to get in holes for normal bird sizes. It never ends lol
Looking forward to your design. Thanks
There is a bird called blue tits?
Squirrels in Florida are MUCH smaller than their Northern counterparts....where were these?
Canada
I have fought an on going battle with these varmints for the last 16 years. So far they have destroyed three so called squirrel proof feeders, i even thought to sidetrack them by giving them their own feeder, but in thanks they destroyed that as well. So called squirrel Guards have proved to be useless. I shall continue to watch the on-going battles with interest.
Interesting video, thanks. Dimension on the left is useless, once I tried centimetres, I realized that inches and ridiculous fractions are obsolete. As for feet, now I only keep them for shoes...
Maybe where you live. Everything is sold/described in inches and feet here. Lumber is metric with Imperial approximations. We think in our system. It works for us.
Side joke: metric is for people who can't do harder math.😊
Hows the feeder doing? I don't want to be a nay sayer but I think you'll eventually see the squirrel gets mad and chews the whole thing to saw dust. Or he'll run down to the city and find a female (they are a bit smaller) so she can do his stealing for him. Squirrels are really crafty but if you cut a 1 gallon glass jug in half and mount it on the pole your feeder is on, that will keep most out as long as the pole is not close ro anything they can jump from. Don't know any cure for that one that used to run around with the moose when we were kids... Was his name Rocky maybe?
Looks good... until a smaller squirrel comes along!
The ones that showed up were both young and old. The real young ones won't venture near it. They are too cautious and jumpy.
So, where is the new squirrel proof bird feeder?!
Still in the testing mode!
Mark could use this
I'm watching squirrel and bird feeder videos, you're making squirrel and bird feeder videos...we both seem to have too much time on our hands...at least you're getting paid for it...me: no life, no excuses
Is it the same video??
I'm constantly learning with my youtube channel and realized afterwards that the first video was far too long at almost 7 minutes. I decided to re-edit it. Thanks for watching.
@@chrisnotap thank you to exply
Then along came the Kits
Hello
Hey
Soon??? It's been two years now.
Same video as before. Did you grab the wrong one to post?
I'm constantly learning with my youtube channel and realized afterwards that the first video was far too long. I decided to re-edit it.
I guess I’m not crazy as I too thought this was a re-run. Still entertaining though.
The first one was far too long. I decided to shorten it and re-upload. Live and learn!
OK Thanks
Me after second try : OH COMON * throws away Birdfeeder* birdys be here at 4 ill have some flies with ur name on it
Boii
All you've done here sir is created evolutionary pressure that will lead to flat headed squirrels. Who do you think you are GOD? Haha Just discovered you today. Great videos!
Squirrels like humans come in different shapes and sizes... You may get to a size the Grey Squirrels can't fit through, but then the Red Squirrels will come, then the Chipmunks... eventually you just have a sealed jar of bird food.
You are so cruel LOL
Which part of the video did you find cruel?
@@chrisnotap LOL just kidding . . . letting the squirrel see the seeds but can't reach in, that's cruel. LOL
35: perfect. 32: bad.
33, 34: are we a joke for u!!?
Thought this seeds are in Russia only :/(₽
next up a squirrel feeder that birds cant scavenge. :^)
the real trip is to feed them dont try to stop them, having a dispenser is the problem, just spread the food out on a dog house roof n they then have to look for the bigger bites, simple
...and along comes a squirrel with a 1 inch head!
Not First
Not really, it might be to small for grey squirrel but not little red ones 😂
Aw its squirrel limbo.
Watch out for the squirrels younger sibling!
I think your talking about the norway rat. A scourge that's been invading the city for the last couple of years.
My wife tells that my 35 is also a perfect size xD
Придумай ловушку для воробьев
I wish you would not had turned off comments on the squirrel that bit off more than it could CHEW......GREAT VIDEOS
I had to turn them off. I had 95% that liked it, but there was 5% of seriously angry people saying it was abuse. Which it wasn't, it was just the situation. Thanks.
@@chrisnotap Too many people who have no idea and no understanding spreading hate. Too bad we can't turn off their ability to comment. Love the video!
Wait until they figure out they can get in sideways. They will.
You must have a love hate relationship with your squirrels.
Mostly love. I feed them separately
ГАЗЕЛЬ НЕ ПРОЕДЕТ
.
,
If you keep feeding those squirrels around your house like that soon they wont be able to fit though the big holes!
Why not just feed the squirrels, mammals matter more than birds
My raccoons would just knock that to the ground and break the jar to get the seeds.
Look, but no touching. How torturing..
Are you commenting on the right video? Torture?
What about the birds? Or you're so worried about squirrels that you forgot that birds have sizes too?
It works out well since most birds choose a hole that is 1” to 1 1/4”
@@chrisnotap hm, thats interesting, never knew that. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
OK BUT listen.. Everyone please feed the squirrels too when you can afford to or throw left overs for them. They are really adorable, cool little creatures. They aren't gross and creepy like rats. They are a very cool animal and make the cutest sounds and faces and poses. Keep the love for them too or start to grow it. Birds are great yes. I understand the need to make just a bird feeder so the birds get their food meant for them. Great idea and funny video 👍
Jasmine Woww they are extremely smart.
They are cute but I don't see why they should be fed on the basis of them being cute when their job is to be scavengers. Birds on the other hand are at constant threat due to invasive species like cats.
You really should look into official sources as to whether or not squirrels should be fed.
But to summerize the official responses from people who studied wildlife all their life. It's best not to. It can lead to their death by associating the food with humans thus not seeing humans as a predator, attracts more squirrels into an area than the area can support with its vegetation/greenery, make it easier to spread disease due to the congregations and lastly create a reliance on food.
To top it off, squirrels are extremely destructive when it comes to property and can attract rats.
Also squirrels will keep coming back and will mess up stuff so you should prob not feed them
squirrels are just rats with fluffy tails.
Squirrels and rats act very different and look very different. Squirrels are very intelligent, friendly too even if not trained as a pet like a rat firvexampls. Rats have beedy eyes and tiny ears and not thevssne face and squirrels have a nice fluffy body and tail. Rats are sneaky and come around at night. Squirrels are asleep at night like us and out during the day. Yes cats are a bird predator and why we should feed birds to help but cats and dogs also hunt squirrels. Yes squirrels can do bad stuff to things but not if the home owners make sure to have everything secure like wires fully covered and all. My little point is to maybe leave some peanuts around once in a while if a few squirrels live in your back yard. I'm not suggesting anything crazy like bunches of food. I guess when I said left overs it seemed much. Sorry I meant that small idea. You can only scavenge the ground for song long until it's empty. Unless the tree has things naturally dropping to the ground for the little guys. Thank you
Ya gotta be smarter than the squirrels.........get a .22 and you're done!
Good grief, you could’ve shortened the video if you moved in progressive intervals rather than 1/8th. It would also show that you have scientific reasoning, which apparently, you’re lacking.
All good points but the last one, ouch!
Ooohhh this is horrible. How dare you upload a shorter video you already uploaded on your own channel! I am so offended... and clearly you lack any scientific knowledge, and we as your viewers have very high standards!! Please never do this again. I am very confused...
Lol!! I realized afterwards that the first one was too long and decided to re-upload it. I will be better in the future!
@@chrisnotap no judgement here man. Thanks for the interesting videos, and for constantly working on it.
