- This has truly "baffled" my most acrobatic squirrels.
$7.50 Cdn
5" diameter, 30" long (cut to around 24"), 30gauge galvanized vent pipe.
No more "feeding" the squirrels. BIRDS ONLY!!!
4 years later, here is the update to this video. Check it out. I still works wonders.

You don't need to hang it or cut holes. Just stack or connect 2-3 pieces of stovepipe so the pole runs through it.
" and that's the way it's supposed to be " Amen 👌
It's now a month later and the baffle I made from your instructions is still working 100%. I too have some pics of very frustrated squirrels! I just love that even after a month they don't have it figured out. Thanks so much!!
Alan White Ah! Good news. Just made my day. Thanks for your update.
My husband made one for me last week ☺ The squirrels are completely "baffled" and I'm completely happy!!
Thank you so much!!
Wow! Thank you for watching and making one! Glad it's working. Mine is still going strong and all the regular squirrels don't even try anymore.
I picked up a salad bowl at my local dollar store here in Canada for 4 dollars which is abut 3.50 USD. I had my neighbor drill a hole through it and used it as a squirrel baffle and it works amazingly. Save your money people. Most of the baffles sold at stores range from about 30 to 60 dollars or even more and cost more than the bird feeders they are protecting. Try using a plastic bowl instead and boring a hole into it for the birdfeeder hook..
I just had this hook that you couldn't just drill a hole into something and slip over. Great idea though very simple. I agree baffles you buy are insanely over priced.
Well I did the same thing, I paid $1 but it worked for a few days hahaha. I need a bigger bowl
vistaprime wow, i see your comments everywhere lol, seems like youre really into birds!
I cut a distilled water jug and it only works for the most subdued squirrels. Going to try to make the one in this video.
Great idea. I watched your video, put my coat on, went to the hardware store and bought a length of sleeve .... about an hour later I also have a squirrel-proof feeder. I have another feeder filled with peanuts which the squirrels can feed at. Thanks for the idea!
No problem! Good luck with the build!
Went down to the basement being a retired HVAC tech, had two duct tubes laying around from a job. I was on the right track that I could make it work. Ran across your FYI video. Thanks for the crown cut idea. Gotta stay ahead of these smart guys.
Their persistence makes them look smarter than us... :)
I swear to god this is what RUclips is FOR. Thanks for this - I was scratching my head at the same problem today and then though.... "Someone's already thought of something cheap and easy". And here you are. :D
Glad to help. Good luck against those tree rats!
Your absolutely right !
I agree. I use the term frugal, not cheap.
@@gmoops8986 , cost-effective
Very ingenious. I have the need and now the solution. Thanks. PS: The expensive part of this is once you build this, then you have to buy a GoPro so you can make some really great entertaining videos.
Thanks! It's still working it's magic!
Ed Kemper p
Hahaha! Of course!
Just made one yesterday & the squirrels have been shut out so far, Thanks for the info.
Excellent. Glad it helped.
Thanks to your design, I'm winning (won?) the war.
The key was snapping aluminum tubes in place, something I was reluctant to do since they're hard to re-open. I also blocked bottom openings of my three tubes with spring-loaded grips - a touche!, a take that! to the squirrels.
But I assured the squirrels I'd throw some peanuts at them now and then as a goodwill gesture, no hard feelings.
All quiet on the eastern front - except for yellow jackets scaring off hummingbirds at feeder. But I'm dealing with them. Will report back.
Thanks again.
Awesome

Anyone skeptical of this genius idea needs to try it. I went to Lowe’s and couldn’t find the dimension like his so I bought a 6” diameter, 24” long (in the plumbing dept) about $5.00. It’s the only thing my squirrels (and I have about 30 of them) that have not been able to climb on. They are feed just as much as the birds and still want to get to the bird feeders and no success yet. It’s a lot of fun to actually watch them try to pass over it. Thank you for sharing your fabulous idea! 👍😊
DMLK CS Thanks for sharing your experience! It is oddly amusing watching them try! Glad it works for you!
Thanks so much! I was trying to figure out how to make one of these. The stove pipe is perfect! So funny to watch the squirrels frustration!
Excellent. Glad it helped.
i hate wasting money too. Love feeding the birds (and the squirrels but separately) but the squirrels seem to have bottomless stomachs! I attached a metal slinky to my pole and that solved my problem :) Ingenuity at work !!
Nicely done.
I’m so excited to go to Home Depot today to buy what’s needed to make this. I’m at my wits end with one particular Olympic squirrel. The squirrels busted the previous baffle and bird feeder. So, wish me luck. Not too handy, but willing to go ‘out on a limb 😉’ to give this a try.
Just made one this morning and it's working perfectly. I watched the squirrels try to climb the pole and fail. They then tried to find a branch to leap from and also failed. Great idea!
Yes!!!!!!!!!!
Squirrel antics are great entertainment. Thanks for sharing.
This is too funny 😅! The squirrel tried every branch, them tried to go up throug the baffle. Brilliant design!
Thanks for this amazing DIY. We made this in the summer of 2020 and almost 1 year later, it still works great!
Nice!
Thank you. This is absolutely brilliant!
I just made one very similar to the above but with 6" pipe. Working like a charm so far. Thank you!
That's awesome Glad it's working for you!
I watched a lot of videos on this topic and gotta say I like your idea the best especially the price. Thank you.
I upgraded to a 6 in pipe and similar design. I'll be posting that video in a few weeks. Thanks!
I have gone on line to choose the best bird feeder baffle and for a cheap cost. I think yours will do the job .... anyway going to try it. Not going to buy one of those $100.00 and more bird feeders.. Way too expensive for a retired elderly lady. thank you for doing this video.
Lovely video.
Good construction.
Thank you for sharing.
filmtajm35 Thank you!
I was about to purchase an iffy baffle from Chewy when I found your video. Bought a 6" vent pipe as they didn't have a 5". We cut the tabs & wired to a double shepherd's hook. So far 2 squirrels have climbed the pool and dropped off when they get to the vent bottom. Love it! 1st thing that really works.
Awesome!!! Glad to hear it.
Well done!! Love your narration-the best. They are relentless for sure. Tks
Great and thank you!
Oh, this is great! And I love your squirrel voice!
I really loved your video. I just spent over $150 for a darn squirrel baffler pole. I was looking for a video on the set up when I ran into your video. Darn! I wish I would have found it earlier.
Thanks for watching. Ouch!!! Enjoy the birds and "baffling" those darn squirrels.
Excellent idea! Many thanks. DIY store tomorrow to buy galvanised pipe.
Thank you. I have a new video where I use a 6" diameter pipe and it is better. After about 4 years I had 1 squirrel pass this baffle. 6-8" should be better
Simple things are so so affordable, and practical.
Glad I found this.Cheap, effective and humane.Thankyou.
You call it humane when the squirrels are starving like that, you'll never see the Kingdom. I'm not angry with you.
I loved your idea and your video. Going to make me one of these. Thank you for the instructions and the entertaining way of presenting them.
Kitty Kat Thanks! I'm sure you'll make some improvements too! It's kind of rough... but it works!
I like it just like it is. As long as it works, that's good enough for me. :)
I am sitting at my window watching the squirrels scale the bird feeder and conquer the baffle that kept them off for 3 weeks. Bribing them with peanuts doesn't work, either. I'll try your method! Also, watching your squirrels get frustrated is the best laugh I've had all week!
That's great if you give it a try. Just make sure that the pipe is around 6 to 8 in in diameter. A 5 in pipe that I used worked for a while until one squirrel figured it out.
Not only a great idea but an entertaining video. Love your narration voice too. You should do radio.
I will set up that one today, Great idea. Thanks for the simple method.
You bet!
Great solution! I'm definitely going to do this too. Thanks for sharing the idea.
finster101 Thanks. Mine is still working well years later!
I wish I had seen this before ordering my baffler. Brilliant and entertaining!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. I still have mine in use. Finally painted it black to blend in better
I watched your video last night, went to Lowes today and made this. This is great. Haven't seen any those 5 squirrels all day !!! Can't wait to see how they react.
Made some dome type baffles to for some hanging feeders, just punched a hole in a dollar store pizza pan. Thanks for making this video. I cut the tabs shorter so they just touch the pole. Then ran a heavy gauge wire into a hole in the body of the pipe just below the tab. Twisted it up on the inside, ran it over a hook and into the other side. Made a good hanger. Ill put the pellet gun away for now!!
Awesome!!! I just had one squirrel figure it out. I think now I'll have to try a 6" pipe.
genius idea, cheap and effective, my kind of project. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot for your comments!
ha-Ha! You win! Been there before, so frustrating. Thank you so much for sharing, I never thought of those old dryer vents before good call. tks
Every 5 years I seem to have a good idea.
This really works. Squirrels stuck on the ground. Birds gets the seed. Not beautiful to look at but it works. Thank you
Great! Made a better looking one this year: ruclips.net/video/UemTsT_i74U/видео.html
I used a much smaller diameter and spray painted it green to please the wife. Works great. They can’t climb inside of it but the diameter is wide enough that they can’t climb it either....brilliant design, thanks!
That's great! Glad to see it's working for you as well. Happy wife happy life as they say.
Love it and your squirrel imitation!! Thank you!!!😆
😊 thank you
Wonderful commentary! Thanks for this idea. Have huge group of rats with bushy tails and need solutions that don’t cost a mint!
What a persistent little bugger! 🤣🤣
I love this idea! I've looked into many ways to solve this problem to no avail. Plus you're right, the commercial options are very expensive! The disc type baffles are ugly and mostly don't work. This is great thank you so much!
You're welcome I'm glad this helped.
THANK YOU! I have been trying to figure out a way to make one, because like you I thought a piece of plastic in a cone shape for $25 was just silly. I appreciate you for sharing this!
No problem. Check the description in the video for the newest design I made with a custom-made cap on the top and a different way to suspend my new baffle. Enjoy
Love this! Will be doing this this weekend
Awesome. I'm still using mine all these years later with no problems. Good luck and enjoy. Maybe make yours prettier than mine!
Thank you for this video. This is the first squirrel baffle I've had that actually keeps the squirrels off my bird feeders.
Glad to hear it's working for most people!!! Mine is still working to this day 🐞
looks nice, cost effective. will give it a try. thanks.
You have made Merica great again...wow
😂Amen!
Double amen
Great easy solution... I didn't have any stovepipe so I cut out the bottom of 2 one quart plastic milk jugs and fitted one inside the other to give it more length. Then just hung it from a wire on my bird feeder pole and the squirrels are not happy! Works great.
Perfect! Yep...they can eat the seeds off the ground..
Thanks for.the video!
Thank you so much. I was looking to buy a baffle and they were just to expensive. Now that I have this up on my feeder poll we will see what happens with these squirrels. They have even been eating my actual bird feeder.
Haha! Crazy squirrels.
The squirrels have been destroying my hummingbird feeder. This will work perfect! Thanks for the idea! I'm off to H.D.!
Mark S great! best of luck!
Yup and that's the way it's supposed to be 👍👍 going to try my hand on this project
I would try a 6-in diameter versus my 5-in. Just makes it a little harder for them to grip. Be careful of the sharp edges! Good luck and have fun.
Thank you for this diy project, axle grease on the pole detered the squirrels for a year but lately not helping looking forward to making this baffle
This baffle is still working for me. Good luck with yours!
I feel your pain,,, yep,, tried that too.
If the grease gets on the birds feathers it could harm them
I have used your method for two years, but all of a sudden the squirrel has become a parkour expert. he takes a short run, jumps towards the tube and then about 3 feet off the ground pushes off the tube and up to the feeder. I think I've witnessed evolution in action!
Holy moly. That is definitely evolution. That squirrels going places. All the others just average Joe's.
Remmington .177..... teach it a lesson.
Haha!👍
Thanks so much! Borrowed this idea and got a black painted vent pipe and a flat end cap from Lowe's and it's working like a charm so far. The flat top would be an issue, but there's nowhere for them to jump from to get on top of it, so all good!! BTW, the slinky worked for about a day, lol.
Awesome. The slinky would have been funny to watch though! I'm thinking of doing an obstacle course for the squirrels so they don't feel left out.
Legend! Been avoiding the expense of buying a crappy deterrent. Thanks!
Love the fact that someone with the name mad gamer is feeding birds! Thanks for watching and glad this could help.
@@LadybugAdventures I ended up with a cheaper but less robust solution, as entertaining as gaming 🤣ruclips.net/video/iIyHR0z-fhk/видео.html I aim to replicate yours at some point!
Now, why didn't I think of that. Great video.
this looks like the method I will try.
thanks so much!
Good luck. Mine is still working like a charm. I might spray paint mine later. The galvanized steel is still rust free.
Genius! 'Cause squirrels are pretty smart! Thank you for the economical tip!
No problem! I'm still using mine. Just make sure you pinch off the top tight so no little critters can fo up
This is probably the most affordable and easiest way to keep them buggers off my feeders! thanks for idea!
Thank you very much! Yeah it still works three or four years later. Let me know if you have any problems with it or any improvements!
Fantastic! Works like a charm. Thanks!
Cool! Awesome.
Thanks very much for sharing your idea. My current baffle is a large circular platter but I prefer your design.
By the way I have two different Squirrel Buster feeders (peanut and regular seed). They are effective to a point. The squirrels cannot access the bird food constantly but they have learned that if the jump on them they can knock some seeds out before they close completely. Squirrels are extremely smart and ANNOYING! 😉
Darn right. Persistent and smart. What a tough combination.
Great DIY video!
Thank you! 😊 Still working in 2020! ruclips.net/video/DiAP2sDHwdE/видео.html
Great idea! I think I’ll get a cap for that and glue it in and then drill a hole in the center for the pole.
Lisa Saffell Yeah wish i could have just used a cap
I really appreciate this video. I have battled the squirrels for over 2 years now, and this baffle appears to have solved the problem. The squirrels are really confused right now. Going on day 5 and they have not come up with an answer. Thanks again!
Woo hoo! That is awesome! I spray painted mine flat black to blend into the pole. Thanks for letting me know about your success.
@@LadybugAdventures I spray painted mine black as well, I can't even notice its there, but the squirrels sure know its there. Lol!
this is so so helpful and so cute!!! Thank you!!!!
Your welcome! Glad I could help.
Gonna do this! Good stuff mate
ruclips.net/video/UemTsT_i74U/видео.html
This my updated baffle. Some improvements.
i'll try it out! thanks a bunch!
Awesome!
This is a great idea and I made one myself. It works great
Greg B Great!
Love this 🤣🤣🤣 i have been using Vaseline laced chilli 🌶 powder on the pole and this has worked wonders .... they stay away as most Squirrel 🐿 repellants are laced with chillis ....but I love this ....
Awesome
Great video!
Thank you. I made an updated version of this one in this link below. ruclips.net/video/UemTsT_i74U/видео.html
Well done!
Mark M Thanks! Still working.
I made one just like the first one you were showing I already had a peace of metal I just cut a metal disc about 24 inches across and drilled a hole in the middle make hole as big as your pole and I cut the disc from the edge to the center hole and bent it over the edge that I cut and when I had a cone shape not to much and pop rivited it togather it works well I just have to move it father out away from the trees and just to make sure I greased the pole
Those squirrel proof feeders that use a lever to close when anything heavier than a bird steps on it, do not work for long. The squirrels figured out how to hang off of the roof on my feeder and scoop up the seed. Love this idea.
Thanks. I have a good idea every 10 years!
We have trouble with snakes which is what I noted would get past your shield but I used the cap you can buy for those pipes and I drilled a hole the pole size and put it on using pipe clamp on the pole to keep the shield from sliding down. Could have cut the cap so as to expand it to fit around the pole but our bird houses slip off the pole easily as do our bird feeders.
What works for me with hanging feeders to keep tree rats from getting to your feeder. Go to an auto junk yard and get an air cleaner cover. The hole for attaching the cover to the stud on the carburetor works for many ways you hang your feeder. I have yet to see a squirrel get past the cover, and it keeps rain off your feeder. I have a fancy chrome cover from a racing air cleaner because only the best for my birds. No I just had a couple from old race cars. Cost, free in many cases just find a junk car, they are everywhere, go to a junkyard and get one for $5 or $10.
Now that's a great idea!!! Your problem is solved. Cheap price!!!
Larry
Thanks. Still going 4 years later.
Thanks for the tip👍
Thanks for this idea. Worked perfectly except I used a 4 x 4 wood pole with same baffle you used ! Squirrels gave up !!
That's so good to hear all these success stories!
I just ordered mine from Home Depot! I also have a 4x4 post to put it around. Can't wait to defeat these rats
worked great for me! stopped them squirrels from eating the bird food. been there several months, they haven't gotten past it yet
For squirrels jumping down from above I bought a round metal serving plate from the dollar store and drilled a hole in the center and pulled the string through . Jump down and nothing to hang on to and the sound of the metal and it moving with their weight was enough after a couple try’s !
Very nice! Good ole dollar stores. A good ole use of your noggin! Good job.
I just completed a similar project after using WD 40 on the feeder pole (it works for only a few days). I cut the bottom out of a one liter green plastic soda bottle, leaving the top intact. I then cut a straight slit from top to bottom and removed the label. I snapped the bottle around the pole and secured a two foot piece of 1/8 inch nylon cord around the top threaded end of the bottle and secured the other end to the fork in my double shepard's crook pole. Works great and no sharp edges. I chose green to blend in.
That sounds great!
Love this entertaining video which I've shared with my local naturalist club and many friends! I'm glad I was still able to see this "original" one! My husband and I made this baffle about three years ago following your instructions. We ended up having to get a 26 gauge pipe and nearly broke our hands trying to cut it for the top tabs! (What kind of tin snips do you use? We are fairly clueless when it comes to using tools!) It worked like a charm....until recently when one squirrel figured it out! I'm about to purchase an 8" diameter pipe to see if it works better. Wish me luck!
I have a better updated baffle based on this same design. Seems to work better. Yes I think the wider diameter would work better. I just use cheap Tim snips from Canadian tire. They came in a set that had a straight, left, and right cutting pair.
@@LadybugAdventures Thanks for the info! We watched your newer video which is very good as well and we appreciate the good tips learned since your first one! But, this video gets high marks for creativity and the cuteness factor...and the music! 🙂 You may come up with a batter baffle but this video will always be close to our hearts! ;-)
Ty. I was just sitting here, trying to figure out how I could make a baffle, for my T post. Something that could be year round. I just have to figure out how to attach it, because I don't think I have a drill bit that will go through the T post. 🤔
love it. Im having the same prob. ill go and get one right now.
Thanks. Good luck!
Makes you back to the yard look like scrap yard too
I do have an updated version that looks a lot better! Check the comments. I pinned a better version!
Thanks for the information! I have some extra sheet metal to do this with, but not sure how to close the seam after I put it on the pole. Recommendations? And does the stove pipe seam snap together easily? If so, maybe I'll forgo the sheet metal and buy the stove pipe. I have several poles to do. Thanks in advance!
First: The ventilation pipe does click together pretty easily. If you have a number of them to do, I would go with this option.
Second: The sheet metal could closed with quick setting epoxy, silicone or adhesive caulking (outdoor grade, while it cures you could hold it together with duct tape or straps), you could rivet them if you have a 1/8" rivet gun (they are cheap and easy to use). There are other ways but it can be hard to explain. Google this "connecting paper without staples". The principle is the same with tin snips and pliers.
Third: Thanks for watching and making me think hard this evening!
I have been like Wile E Coyote these past few weeks trying to outsmart these damned squirrels!! We even feed them critter food but they will not leave the bird feeders alone! Like you I didn't want to spend $40 on a simple baffle. Thanks for ideas!!
It really works even to this day
@@LadybugAdventures We're going to fashion one from 8" diameter pvc pipe. See how that works.
@@lovesilk1 Cool let me know if it works.
Outstanding!
Thank you!!!
Perfect cheap solution! THANK YOU now to keep the deer out of the garden.
No problem! Deer. Now that is a challenge.
And the BEAR! I gave up. Bear are scary and I love my dog too much to lose him. I'll watch the birds in the trees and them eating the bits of jelly bread I put out for them. That doesn't last long enough for the bear to find.
Now that is a true challenge. I'd be up for that. I'm thinking some motion detection device that does something really annoying. Luckily where I live bears are not around. Only wolves and coyotes. But very infrequent.
Made 2 of these. They work!
That's awesome!!!
looked like this worked good
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure
rexpcoe: Wipe galvanized metal with vinegar before you paint it. I heard somewhere that mixing chill oil with seed stops squirrels. Can't comfirm
great idea n simple thanks
Why thank you so much!
brilliant!
