I got some 'smelly' yarn from a home with a lot of cats last week and tried this, right down to the beagle sniff of approval. I'm very happy to say it 100% worked! Thanks for the great tip video!
Donna you have been teaching me for years and I so appreciate you! You are so straightforward and easy to understand! I always recommend you to beginners. Your contribution to fiber arts education is immeasurable. Much love to you!
Glad to see I'm not the only one to do this. I've been doing this a few years now as I get yarn that is donated to me. Thanks for sharing an awesome tip!
Thank you so much for showing us how to wash yarn. I buy a lot of yarn from our Thrift store and the yarn sometimes have a smell to them. Like they've been sitting boxed up for awhile. So now I can actually get all of that yarn out and finally use it.
I am very grateful that you gave us this information! I had no idea how to do this. I have some yarn that I inherited and it smells a little musty. This came at the perfect time! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! I scored two huge tote bins full of yarn and another if crochet thread - every weight and color! I am now confident how to clean them!
I'm amazed at this video. I love working with the yarns that no one wants or its older. I have worked with some that's pretty bad I always threaded through it and washed it afterwards and then gave it away Now I have the knowledge on how to wash it first. Thank you so much for sharing 💕
That is such a great idea. This is one of the reasons I love watching your channel. Don’t always comment but always watch and like. I learn so many new things and tricks of the trade. Thank you thank you.
Thank you for posting this!! My cat rage-peed on my afghan project bag and I wasn't sure if I could wash the whole skeins or if I had to unravel and specially wind them. Definitely going to give this a shot!
This is super useful to know! I've received a lot hand-me-down yarn that's been sitting in attics for years and this seems like such a good way to freshen it up! I always want to use old yarn so it doesn't go to waste, but I also always hesitated to for fear of dirt and germs. This is a perfect solution to that issue! ^^
Excellent, thank you. I've wondered if yarn could be washed while still in the skein, and now I know + the best way to do it! Your Beagle is adorable & the perfect guest appearance! 💗🐶💗
Thank you! The nylon is a Fabulous idea! I have yarn I didn’t know what to do with cause my son gave it to me out of a friends storage unit! Needless to say with the garbage bag etc… So now I can make good use of it! God Bless you!😊
This helps a lot! I got a bunch of yarn from my grandma including one new looking white skein. I haven’t used it because it’s dirty looking from being so old and sitting in the bottom of the closet. I’m exited to finally have a way to wash it so I can use it rather than having it sit in the yarn bag!!
Thank you so much, I get yarn at goodwill sometimes and since they bag them in taped ziplock bags you can't find out if there is a smell until you get it home. I got some the other day and it smelled of cigarette smoke and I thought I would have to throw it out. I never thought of doing this, so simple.
Exactly! Especially these days we can't turn down yarn anymore because it's getting more difficult to find, plus, I kind of think the stuff they made a few years ago sometimes is better than what is available today.
Great idea. I have some a friend gave me and my cat try’s to sleep on it. I tried your method to wash the yarn 🧶 and my cat now just wants to play with the ball. Thank you, big fan of yours.
I loved the beagle smell test at the end haha, very effective! Sometimes I feel just as sensitive as a dog to smells so if I ever get into crotchet like I want to try I'm gonna keep this tip in mind :D
Thank you so much for this amazing advise and video! I wish I would have known this several years ago when I trashed my mom's unfinished crochet WIP that was smoky and musty! And when I've passed up so great sales on yarn due to the strange unbearable smell! Lesson learned!
Great info thanks for sharing! I wondered whether or not we could do that and I’m going to imagine that a piece that has been completed. Could be done in the same morning from format as long as it is wash and dry, yeah?
Wow 😮 thank you so much Donna! This was very helpful! I’ve been wanting to know how to do this and you helped , I have a bunch of second hand yarn 🧶 I’d like to wash before working with it and thanks to you note I know how!
Hey thank you for this. Wanted you to know what I found. I used my reusable vegetable nylon bags which allow for more than 1 skein. I then did a pre wash with vinegar which allows for sterilization odor neutralizer and color set. I then used normal delicate cycle and my normal detergent and scent booster . It worked amazingly!
Thank you so so much I have a couple of skeins of yarn later what you might call a friend I don’t color that she gave me and they smell like cats so I have them in our Walmart sack tonight to try and not get that smell all over the rest of my yarn So now I can wash them.
Ever receive some scratchy yarn or one that smells funny? This washing method helps save yarn that you otherwise might have ended up throwing out!
Hi! I didn’t see in the video (I could have missed it) but do you normally wash on warm, or cold, what temperature do you recommend?
For you skeptics out there, I've tried this and it DOES work!
A good tip if you're choosing to handwash them in the bags is to use a saladspinner to dry them out afterwards!
I didn’t know you could do this. Thank you so very much.❤your intelligence about yarn and crocheting is totally awesome. Again thank you Donna.
You are so welcome!
i didnt know that to 😊thanks a lot that helped me . 😊good tutorial thanks
Thank you 😊 that is wonderful learning. ❤
@@naztaziaWill this method work if I already turn my yarn into yarn cakes?
I always thought washing yarn would make it get all matted, now I know how to do it properly. Thanks!
Yep, as long as you keep the yarn safe in a knee high or mesh bag, it should be good!

@@naztazia It's just the truth 😊
Glad to see I'm not the only one to do this. I've been doing this a few years now as I get yarn that is donated to me. Thanks for sharing an awesome tip!
Wonderful!
Thank you so much for sharing these ideas!!! I've never thought to wash the skeins first. I just wash the project when completed.
You can do it either way of course. I generally wash the skein beforehand if the yarn would bother me as I worked with it (due to smell, scratch, etc)

Absolutely!
I love that fact that you can wash these skeins! Thank you 🙏🏽
You are so welcome!
yes me to 😊
I am very grateful that you gave us this information! I had no idea how to do this. I have some yarn that I inherited and it smells a little musty. This came at the perfect time! Thank you so much!
Wonderful!
Oh perfect. Just yesterday I was telling my mom how I was gifted a ton of yarn but it was a little musty. This is exactly what I needed. Thank you!
As always Donna, you are on point. Your video taught me how to Plan Pool almost six years ago. Thank you.😊😊
You are so welcome!
This is so smart! Never knew I could do this. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on yarn❤
Great tips!! I also use a little fabric softener. 🐈💜👸
Thank you so much! I scored two huge tote bins full of yarn and another if crochet thread - every weight and color! I am now confident how to clean them!

Really good to know this. I am a coffee drinker, and I always worry about spilling my cup near my project.
I can definitely relate!

Thank you very much!
I'm so happy! Just yesterday I was wishing there was a way to prewash yarn. I never thought of knee highs, great idea. Thank you so much.
I love your scent detector! 😆
Thank you for posting this!! My cat rage-peed on my afghan project bag and I wasn't sure if I could wash the whole skeins or if I had to unravel and specially wind them. Definitely going to give this a shot!
Yep, as long as your detergent works with fabric and the smells, it should work with the yarn too!
Thank you🥰what a great idea😃
Brilliant! I had no idea about the knee hi. Thank you for this tip.
Happy to help!

THANK YOU! I actually really need this info.
I’ve bee waiting for someone to post this🙏🏽🥰🙏🏽
Lately yarns have caused me so much eye irritation 😢
Thank you
Yep, I'm having the same issue too (along with nose, skin, etc.) I've been forced to do this to all of the yarn in my projects and videos anymore.
Thank you Donna!! For a wonderful tip
Wow!What a brilliant idea.😮🙂
OMG! I have always taken the yarn out of the skein and made a hank then put in mesh bag!! Thanks so much
I heard you could do this but wasn’t sure how, thanks for the tutorial! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Glad I could help!
Thank you, I love your tutorials and information.
Thank you very much for sharing this washing yarn video. It is very helpful 🧶
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this! I recently bought some yarn from a yard sale and it's nice but some is dirty. Will definitely be washing it like this!

Hi, Donna. Thanks for that tutorial. I never thought about t
That, your so cool 😎.
Thank you! Naztazia very helpful.
Awesome idea. I wondered if you could do it. Thanks for your tutorial and great ideas.
Glad it was helpful!
Wonderful information. Some yarns are so harsh it hurts my fingers to work with them. Softening them will definitely help. Thanks!!
Me too. Especially when it's the colder, winter months, my skin is especially not happy with the harsher yarns.
I always thought I had to suffer through the smell, until I made the project, and then wash it. Thank you!
This is so cool! I will have to try this! Thank you!!!!
You are so welcome!
Me encantó el video. Muy práctico y tan bien explicado, como siempre. Saludos desde México 🌿
Thanks so much Donna. Fantastic idea💝
Thanks for tip 👍
This is so helpful. Thank you so very much.
Thank You so much for this video. I always wondered if it was safe to wash my yarn before using it.
Wow, I never thought of doing this. I've been crocheting for about 60 years.
Awesome vid. Thank you so much!!! No one has ever touched on this subject that I know of. 👍

Thank you what a wonderful idea. Thank you
Love this tip! Do you ever just hang it to air dry or would doing this stretch the yarn awkwardly?
Thank you so much. Awesome tip.

Wonderful!
I had a mega roll that needed washing. I caked the yarn first. I’m gonna use the nylon trick as the laundry bag made the yarn cakes fuzzy.
Thank you so so much I have a couple of skeins of yarn later what you might call a friend I don’t color that she gave me and they smell like cats so I have them in our Walmart sack tonight to try and not get that smell all over the rest of my yarn So now I can wash them.

Just got some yarn in that smells like it was soaked in chemicals. Definitely gonna try this!
Yep, I know the smell! Washing definitely helps!
The beagle sniff test is my absolute favorite thing😂
