    I love this show! I am glad someone is reacting to it.
    Nice first reaction BTW.
    FAM does a really good job of setting a time period and highlighting historical differences.
    Now I am in my mid 50's so I probably pick up a lot of them IMMEDIATELY that are probably missed by younger viewers. Let's just say, it is fun to watch a space mission with a well known astronaut working with the new FAM characters. It is like fan fiction, except well written. 😄

    To answer your real question about what happened to the Soviets, the short answer is that their equivalent of Werner Von Braun, Sergei Korolev - the guy who led Sputnik and got Gagarin into orbit - died by basically working himself to death. The rocket they championed wasn't good enough and Brezhnev cancelled the program to focus on ICBMs.
    Apple actually just recently announced a spinoff of this show covering the same era from the Soviet perspective.

    • @EpimethiusPSN
      @EpimethiusPSN 3 месяца назад +5

      Yes - Korolev died due to complications from a surgery to remove his appendix. His loss , he was both the Soviet space leader AND space program champion, coupled with the rising cost of going to the moon meant the Soviets could not afford a moonshot AND build up ICBMs. They chose ICBMs and their defense. The US was able to pay for both.
      Most believe the first step to the collapse of the Soviet Union was that they stayed in the space race far longer than they could afford and it left them financially unstable heading into the '80s.

      @@watchthiswithjoeandkevin6 On the other hand, without the Cold War there's a decent chance we would never have landed people on the moon even now

    Gene Kranz admitted he never used the phrase failure is not an option, but he did embrace it and it became the name of his autobiography.

    This show is amazing. The amount of times I’ve sat on the edge of my seat in excitement and terror … you’re going to love it!
    Btw, it was created by Ronald D Moore, who was the guy that made the remake of Battlestar Galactica (my number 2 best sci fi show). He does that “camera in space” trick a lot there too. Like a fingerprint

    I was very excited to see that reaction appear in my feed today! I was going to suggest this show to replace one of the period dramas you’re currently watching, but a individual reaction is fun as well. It seemed to me it would fit very well with your channel. This is such a great show, it’s brilliantly done and should be much more popular and talked about than it is. There’s very few reactions videos to it (I only found one other channel that did it), so it’s a treat to have you doing it. There’s so much discussions to be had with that show, with a mix of alt-history and characters driven plots. I’m sure it’s going to be very interesting.

    And my tv show taste does expand to more than "period shows involving russians" lol, it's just a coincidence that these two share some similarities and also happen to be really well done series where you can feel the care that's been put into making them.

While I've heard of For All Mankind, I've never seen it, and I had no idea about the alternate time line premise. Now you've got me wanting to track down this series.

    I'm so glad they got the big twist out of the way in the first 5 minutes, it makes it easier to avoid the spoiler 😅
    So, this show has a mix of real and fictional characters. Deke Slayton is real, as is Gene Kranz (both also portrayed in Apollo 13), and even Wernher von Braun was real. Apollo 10 really happened in May 1969, they took the lunar lander out and got close to the surface of the moon, but it was never intended to actually land. In fact they intentionally didnt give it enough fuel because they were worried that the astronauts might just try to land anyway. The crew of Apollo 10 in this show are all fictional characters.

    • @prodestrian
      @prodestrian 3 месяца назад +5

      As I understand it, the Russians were already behind schedule with their lunar program, and there was due to be a test flight about 2 weeks before Apollo 11. But the rocket exploded and completely destroyed the launchpad, it took them two years to get up and running again. By that point the Apollo program was basically over and there wasn't much support to continue the Russian program, so they switched gears to focus more on space stations through the 70s.
      I don't think the 1969 soviet launch was ever supposed to have crew on board, so that's probably where the For All Mankind timeline deviates from real history. The Russians were on schedule, and that launch not only didn't explode but also had a lunar lander and a full crew aboard.

    • @prodestrian
      @prodestrian 3 месяца назад +2

      If I remember my history, Deke Slayton was actually an astronaut in real life but he wasn't able to fly due to a heart murmur, so he was put in charge of the astronauts (basically a desk job).
      Eventually he was cleared for flight and made it to space in the early 70s, I think it was the joint American & Russian "Apollo-Soyuz" mission that he flew on.

      Thank you for sharing this! Yeah, the blend of actual historical figures with fictional ones for the narrative leaps really make this show a great time.

    • @przemekkozlowski7835
      @przemekkozlowski7835 3 месяца назад +1

      @@prodestrian The original divergence is supposed to be that Korolev did not die during a medical procedure and was thus able to keep the Soviet space program on track. Thus their rockets stop exploding and the test flight turns into a real moon landing. Even with that change, it probably would have not been possible for the Soviets to land on the moon in real life but it does make it more believable for the show.
      The Ted Kennedy thing is the first of the "butterfly effect" changes caused by the Red Moon. Things don't completely diverge from our timeline right away and it is fun to watch which events they choose to keep the same and which will change. Between seasons they like to release videos highlighting the changes on world history, politics and culture.
