I remember seeing Sharon Osbourne on WILTY and she told a story of how there had been a fire at her house in LA and she'd woken up her assistant who lived in a house in the grounds and made him run into the burning house to rescue the dogs. The next day he asked for time off, because he had a bad chest due smoke inhalation and so she fired him. Turns out it was true and she thought that was a funny story. Horrible woman.

Edit: I just looked up the story and she clarified she didn't actually fire him and added that bit on for comedic effect. She says the man worked for her for another 15 years. I have no idea what to believe.

Rob really was the missing ingredient for the show. It went to the next level when he took over. David and Lee have the perfect dynamic, but Rob is the ultimate middle man in the way he allows the three of them to bounce off each other. His interjections are hilarious, but he doesn’t overdo it either. The three of them together make for an S tier lineup.
Angus wasn’t bad, but when you watch him and Rob it’s night and day.
The show also changed in format a lot when he did, they made the rounds longer and started focussing on the stories rather than the game. During the first series, the rounds would sometimes only involve two or three sentences in a minute before they moved on.
Now, of course it's entirely possible that Rob had impact on making that decision.
when i started binge watching it after seeing some clips, end of season 2 i had to look up when Rob was gonna take over. I wound up being on the last episode and was so so happy caus i had only seen clips with him and its basically the difference between Whose Line UK vs US Drew Carey just made the atmosphere better, was more comedic, and a better presenter for a comedy show
I actually quite enjoyed Angus, and (despite also liking Rob Brydon dearly from other things) took quite some time to warm to Rob. Of course, Rob is a tremendous host and a true gentleman, to say nothing of the fact that he is perhaps the most ardent historian of British comedy history on the screen today.
But I do wish Angus had stuck around longer. Oh well!

@@winfieldtrail8956 The problem with the Deayton years was that they were trying to make it too much like HIGNFY (up to the Oxbridge vs thick-as-two-planks dynamic). Thats not what the show is.
The giving of scores is simply there so we can all pretend it's a game show and not simply a showcase of the some of the most brilliant comics the world has to offer ❤

The recording format of WILTY is kind of brilliant, because they shoot way more rounds than they have time to air, letting them paper over a lot without the audience noticing. A guest could be terrible and they could practically edit them out of the episode with the audience being none the wiser. And all the cut rounds give them enough material for one or more additional episodes if they need them, which they periodically do.
Super common in all forms of television (and films for that matter), you always stride for shooting more than you need just so you've got room to tell a better story in the edit.
@@KayJay01 its pretty much standard, let alone common. look at the jackass movies for example. they shot about 3 films worth every movie then they editied it down the film came out then we got a .5. the same with anything. even the RUclips show Good mythical morning with rhett and link do a similar thing where they record loads of stuff.
For most things it is like 30:1 ratio. That is 30 minutes filmed for every 1 minute used.
This is to allow editing of best.
That is not to say 30 minutes of different material, it could be reshot and new.
Also, for improvisation (and a lot of these panel shows are semi improvised) they need material to edit down.
As for scripted material, like film, it is part of the standard editing process. They scrap material and they write to add scenes as they see their vision come to life.
Can you imagine the work that goes into create a stage script, how many versions were performed before that final script was published?
Anyone who knows anything know that editing happens, whether it is love action or written form.
And in these panel shows, supposed to be comedy, what might look good.on paper it is guaranteed that quite a lot won't work in reality, be it the people performing don't or can't make it funny, or the live audience does not react so they know it will fail/struggle on TV. That is just part of the process.
And I think every comedian fears every night on a live tour that their material may not work as every audience is different and will react differently, even in the same town, let alone different towns and even different countries, which is why they need an arsenal of routines/jokes that can be tailored or pulled on if they find a particular audience is not reacting as expected.
Wilty is worth a watch simply because of David,lee and rob complement each other so well and along with the guests its refreshingly different each time.
7:51 - I believe the "scoring" element was a requirement to get shows classified as quizzes (rather than talk shows), which influenced their scheduling. I'm not sure if that's still the case, or if it's just a tradition now, but it's not just WILTY. There are pointless, arbitrary, and often incomprehensible "scores" in other panel shows as well (Mock the Week, QI, HIGNFY, etc.).
That makes sense. The only reason why The Young Ones had random musical acts was to get variety show funding.
Shooting Stars was the same I think, the whole show was absolute nonsense (hilarious nonsense)

If there wasn't a score in the format the whole thing would eventually fall apart, it brings order and meaning its a framework to have fun with, otherwise all these panel shows would end up resembling something like that Alan Davies Untitled show.
@@chatteyj - Huh...? The difference between those formats has nothing to do with scoring.
Still Untitled is a show where people get together to tell random stories, they're not answering questions, doing tasks, or trying to "beat" anyone. Adding a score to each person's story wouldn't add any "order and meaning", just like the scores in Mock the Week (for example) don't add any order or meaning.
A much better example would have been comparing the original Room 101 format (essentially a talk show, with no scoring) with its more recent incarnation (with three guests and one "point" at stake in each round). IMO, the original format was much better, because the whole thing was never designed to be a competition (just like Mock the Week isn't). Adding the scoring element didn't bring any "order" or "meaning", it just wasted time.
WILTY is an inherently competitive format (with players from each team trying to fool the opposing team), so the scores here do make sense. They didn't have to be team scores, they could just keep track of how many times each person had fooled the others (or guessed correctly), but since they have two fixed members (the "team captains"), team scores make more sense.
TL;DR: The scores in WILTY aren't there "to *bring* order and meaning", they're just a _consequence_ of the format of the show.
If Bob Mortimer is on you know the show is gonna be dynamite!
I'd say the score in the end helps to give reason to why it's all happening, in the sense that it's all part of a competitive game. None of us care about the score, but it would feel very weird and awkward if it was just people taking turns to tell truths or lies and people trying to find out. You need some kind of setting, and a game show format gives reason to care about whether or not you get it right. Again, none of us care about the score, but because it's presented as a game, it encourages participants and the audience to engage more in their own predictions. The score and teams reinforces this idea that this is a competitive game, and it just helps to avoid an apathetic approach to it

But it's also a bit weird, because not every round gets televised and if they have to many good rounds from one show they put that in a special compilation episode. Therefore you can't keep track on the score and that makes the final score pretty arbitrary.

Oddly enough, the person who I'd probably consider the worst guest ever was in the very first WILTY episode that I ever happened to watch, when I initially found it here on youtube so many years ago. Janet Street Porter. Her attitude was so aggressive and condescending, and you don't need any 'behind the scenes gossip' to help you figure that out, it's abundantly clear just watching the episode. She literally gets up from her chair at one point and walks over and tries to cower over David because she's sick of the questions he's asking her, they genuinely thought for a second she was gonna try to slap him.
I didn't get that vibe at all. Granted, I am not English and haven't seen her in anything else, but I took it as her sense of humor or playing the part.
Nope, that wasn't an act. My shoulders hurt from cringing so hard at her aggressive defensiveness. I hate that episode.
@@merudevi I went to JSP's live show and she seemed to be quite drunk. She invited questions from the audience and I asked her if she'd be interested in making more episodes of the show where she solves 17th century muder mysteries with Paul Daniels and she described him as "a cunt". ha ha
When I read the video title the first person I thought of was JSP. In fact I think she might be the only truly awful guest they’ve had. At least with Sharon Osborne I was able to watch and find some entertainment in her describing how terrible she is. I can’t even remember what Janet did because it’s probably the only episode I’ve never rewatched. I just remember that moment where she walks towards David and angrily shouts something and felt like it was a genuinely tense moment.
I’ve always wanted to hear the trios thoughts about that situation. I feel like the editors must have worked harder than ever to produce enough watchable content.

I'm almost certain when he said about a guest being "the best" despite not being a comedian, he HAS to be talking about Claudia Winkleman, who is consistently one of the most fun guests, and who's able to keep up the pace and the banter, and the laughs, despite not being a comic. It's also kind of funny to me that even Britons don't seem to understand the meaningless point system that British panel shows use. I'm American, and when we got an American remake of "Whose Line," it irritated my mother to no end that not only were points assigned entirely arbitrarily, but that in the words of the show itself, "The points don't matter."
it's not arbitrary... you get a point for correctly guessing, or you get a point for deceiving the other team

Claudia winkleman is 100% the most irritating person on tv currently!! She's painfully unfunny and yet she thinks she's hilarious which only makes it worse 🤦

He's probably talking about himself. David Mitchell has said a similar thing before about a bad contestant who always still ends up showing up despite this. And its probably evident they're just joking about themselves.
Personally my least liked guest is David Walliams. I just don't think he's funny. He's creepy, and I kinda hate whenever he's on.

lee or rob once said there is only one guest who was never allowed back on because it turned out the "true" story they gave the researchers was actually bullshit. my theory is it's michael mcintyre's "my wife's car only turned left" story

Chris Addison comes to mind being a friend of Robs and not contributing much to the show apart from when called upon. As for the other person I'd guess Rebecca Front but it could quite a few of them, Rob would of seen more of them than we got to see in the edit.

Have adored Rob and his work for a long time now and was excited when you announced he was coming on and I have to say he didn’t disappoint. This will go down as fan favourite episode I think! Best guest by a country mile - Bob Mortimer. Let's face it, he already knows how to misdirect, obfuscate and just plain bamboozle, and then asking him to explain something he may (or may not) have done...better just to sit back and let the tsunami of Bob's flights of fancy wash over you.

As a viewer who has watched every single episode of WILTY, for me the worst guests ever were Janet Street Porter and Terry Christian. Both dreadful!

The one who shot to my mind when Rob was saying that they more quiet than expected/wanted was Johnny Vegas. I remember being so excited to watch his first episode and then walking away afterwards feeling a little underwhelmed because he'd been a bit quieter. He's wonderful anyway :)

WILTY was created for Gyles Brandwyth , the man may or may not be lying constantly but he's never anything but fascinating .
Giles was on it a couple of weeks ago. Was really excited to watch him, but he just recounted stories he's told on QI and other shows so was a bit of a letdown.
Love Gyles but Bob Mortimer is surely the perfect guest for it. The man is ridiculous and I still find it hard to believe some of the stuff he claims to be true. Doing your own dental work? Come on!

I reckon he first one he's talking about (not the one of David's team) that was trying to be post modern was Peter Serafinowicz, watched the episode and that's what he was attempting to do and it didn't really work.

For me, Sharon Osbourne was the worst by a mile. Apparently she said after the show that she changed her story because it was a comedy show, which only goes to show that she understands neither the show nor comedy.

I wonder if these guys are too close to the mic or no compression is applied - when needed. I found the audio on them quite harsh and grating to listen to.
Rob's voice comes across quite gently and is even softer - which is crazy because he's the guest.

I love British panel shows. I think Rob is wrong, sometimes you need a guest to be reserved and quiet.
It really depends on who the other guests are. If you have a big personality like Rhod Gilbert or James Acaster, you'd want a more reserved guest.
you wouldn't want to put Jimmy Carr, Lee Mack, and Johnny Vegas on the same team for instance. They are all hilarious, but a reserved guest would compliment them better.

Wrong? I mean, reserved and measured is one thing, and I agree that people like that balance out the energy of the room. Someone who is almost entirely silent is another thing entirely, and I think that's what he was referring to, without making any guesses to whom he is referring.

His Welsh accent sounds so much more distinctive on this than it does on WILTY. Maybe it's the sound quality but just an observation
My guess for the guest who tried to deconstruct the game would be Michael Mcintyre. I recently saw a clip he was in and it kind of fit the description. Still funny, and nobody seemed angry (except David Mitchell's comic anger) but he did seem to try to turn the game around a bit.
But wasn't that an Angus Deayton episode? I can't remember, but it was very early in the series.

I was thinking maybe it was Jon Richardson. If I remember correctly he did a bit of that "poking fun at the game" thing, though it didn't seem like a big deal. With the editing of these shows you never know how much they cut out.

A lot of the new comedians are pretty crap to me. They all play it so safe and I can't help but think that some of them only get the push because they fill a minority quota. Which sounds harsh and people will not like to hear that but I think it's probably true. Which is a shame because I'm sure there are many minority comedians out there who don't play it safe and have a unique act that we don't get to see because it's quick and easy to just cast, alright ill say it, Nish Kumar.

Agreed. It's time to wrap the show up, honestly. Even the uproarious, laugh out loud moments that Rob, Lee and David used to produce are waning a bit. I know it's been wildly successful but you need to know when something's run its course, and I think WILTY has

What i wanna know is, how do the producers find true stories on the guests? Even David said after the "As a child, i had a little bell..." Reveal was like, "How do you know this? Whrere do you get this info from?" Obviously he knows but they dont half find out some weird and funny trivia abour guests and panelists.
The producers don't find the true stories; the guests bring them in. Every season, Lee and David write down a few new 'truths,' and these anecdotes may or may not be used on the show. Lee and David are kept in the dark about whether something will be used as material or not. Sometimes old stories will crop up seasons later.
Dunno why David would have said, "How do you know this?" Probably just a joke.

That was hilarious. Cracked under the pressure and admitted to lying before Rob even told him to. Although not as half-arsed as when Vic Reeves was given a lie featuring someone he didn’t know and a word he didn’t understand, and was so bamboozled by it that the round lasted around 15 seconds. I’m not even kidding

I’ve always wondered about that guy who chewed him while trying to tell his stories. Seems like SOMEONE would have told him “yeah, we don’t do that on TV.”
There is the one lady that tried confronting David when he was making jokes about writing a will on cardboard or something. In recent years, there was a youtuber that kept turning to the audience, and was laughing and pointing at Lee saying he was funny. It's like he didn't get the audience is not part of the show and just made things awkward.
My favorite guests are Bob Mortimer (his friends names), Claudia Winkleman ("Well, yes, no, right, OK..") Miles Jupp (his laughter and snappy comebacks) and Greg Davies (the best storyteller). Absolutely brilliant.
Ive watched WILTY for years since I was a kid and I would LOVE to see noel fielding on the show he's an incredibly unique guy with many storage stories so I would really love to see what stories he would talk about. I would also love to see noel on happy hour to I mean if you can get rob at this point Im expecting the queen next

Rob probably wasn’t talking about her, but I remember an episode with Judy Murray on there and she barely asked any questions. She also didn’t have to tell any lies/truths. She definitely seemed out of her depth.
They all have to read stuff from the cards, but only the best ones make the edit. Just like the best jokes etc

According to an interview between Brydon and Noel Gallagher, WiLTY is Noel's favourite show. Given that Shaun Ryder was on, why not Noel?
Noel is quite funny but he doesn't seem to like other people making jokes at his expense and can be a bit up himself, so he can be a bit volatile.
I feel like having him as a guest might end up being a bit uncomfortable if he takes something personally, though if he's willing to get in the spirit of things I think he could be pretty good.
Probably Paul Foot was the post modern guy right?
He was great when he had to lie about believing telekinesis though. Probably his analytical approach to find true/lie didn't make in the edit. Who knows? Only Rob I guess.
I have always wondered what happened with Dave Gorman, who was on the Janet Street Porter episode. His turn to read out the card never made the program, or any unseen clip episodes.
i have a feeling he was talking about Charlie Brooker. i remember watching that episode and thinking what a weird vibe he was giving. very overly aggressive with his questioning and almost acting above the concept of the game
I don't remember his appearance but he does tend to be overly cynical and negative when appearing on other shows.
Charlie Brooker has been on more than once and was great on the show. The 6-year lie to his girlfriend about being deaf on one ear is a classic.

I would say some of the worst guests (with or withour Brydon as the host) were Omid Djalili who just looked like he didnt want to be there, Sharon Osborne was just vile (and that before her awful story was told), Tara Palmer Tomkinson clearly didn't get it (when she had to tell Claudia you cant ask the guest on 'This is my' when claudia was obviously talking to Tara talking to her), Trisha Goddard was just snobby and passive aggressive (rolling her eyes when told a coconut is a seed, saying frankie boyles poems would be about drowning puppies) and of course Terry Christian, who's just a twat anyway and was saying why his team (Lee Mack and Jimmy Carr) were having a go at him and not being on his side when its all supposed to be fun, who just looked like he was taking it too serious.

I think the only ones who spoil it are the ones who don’t seem to get the point that they need to fool the other team. Bob Mortimer and Greg Davies know how to play the game well. I think that Lee, whilst he has plenty of opportunity to display his quick wit, it is patently obvious that 9/10 times he is lying. David is much the same but he does get truths to tell now and then. Though I am not a fn per se, of Claudia Winkleman, I do think she is a good player, Rhod Gilbert too. There have been a few who surprised me, not comedians as such but still funny and good at the game. My fave is Greg Davies when he tells stories of his childhood…like the periscope story or the secret language with his sister. So funny. Bob and his stories too have me in stitches.
Most David and Lee stories have to be lies simply because they're on there every week and they can only have so many true stories to tell. What's amusing is that they approach it from opposite ends. With David he tells stories in such a ways that you could believe they might be true, but with Lee he gives everything a veneer of BS so that you never believe any of them.

How does one play WILTY in a post-modern manner? Anyone know which episode he's referring to?
I think that's when a guest challenges the familiar format/concept of the game and does things to deliberately spin it into a different trajectory from the "conventional" format. Like when a guest decides he's not going to do what is expected of him on a show. I'm not sure how anyone would achieve that with such strong anchors as Rob, Lee and David on this particular show, but Rob naturally would have seen more than us of every guest. I don't know which episode it was - the parts that won't make good TV are edited out, of course.

I don’t think WILTY is as easy as they make it look. You have to be somewhat witty, funny, and be able to tell a good lie at times.
Not everyone will be as skilled as the others.
Oh definitely not, if you're lucky you get a truth but then it means you need a story that fits David's criteria of something true that maybe as well be a lie because it's so unlikely 😂
I wonder if that's why (other than the fact that it's a comedy show) most of the guests tend to be comedians, or at least people used to maintaining a dialogue without a script, since those skills of thinking on the spot and making it funny & witty are ingrained already

ohh - i totally remember watching one wilty episode and finding it just a little bit awkward because of a guest, but I cannot remember when it was. I think they like interrupted Lee, and you know Lee is the star so you don’t do that. And if that is what Rob was refering too, I think he wasn’t being negative he was just defending his colleagues in a sweet way.

Actually Rob said something VERY pertinent there, which I realized a few series ago which tells me that with certain guest panelists,Lee and David "play the game and do a bot of Sjhow Biz" because in this particular situation which occurs every 2 or 3 shows,I "know" every time the correct answer ,whether a guest is lying or otherwise, and if I know then Lee and David know yet,occasionally, get it "wrong" which is hard to believe.
I don't know about worst guest. The show tends to be worth watching no matter whose on it. But Bob Mortimer, James Acaster and Greg Davies are definitely some of the best guests
I feel the same. I've watched every show and haven't ever felt that a particular guest wasn't up for the game or didn't contribute sufficiently. I simply enjoy all the banter. But yes, we only see edited versions - for understandable reasons!
