Hey everyone! Thank you so much for checking out this video and leaving so many comments about the band and other songs to check out.
Real quick... 2 things:
1. I realize Phantom of the Opera is not an Opera. It's a musical. I know I said "my grandparents loved Opera and had it on all the time" and then referenced Phantom, and realized while editing I'd probably get some comments on that. However, I appreciate the time and attention that you give to these videos and it shows you guys actually care, and I love that so much. I honestly hope and expect to get called out if I ever say anything that is inaccurate, especially since these are all in the moment one take videos and sometimes don't realize I've said something wrong until later.
2. There are A LOT of aggressive and negative comments being made either comparing Tarja and Floor or just outright trashing Tarja because some people like Floor better. The extreme ones are being deleted, and I would much appreciate if we kept conversations about the music and band members civil. Everyone has personal tastes, but this is not a competition. I'm learning about the history and music of Nightwish, not trying to determine who's been the better vocalist.
Word! Nightwish deservs better then negative comments about Tarja and floor, anette. They all gave/gives Nw different sounds, and for many of us Nw army, loves the story behind the band, lyrics, the music, and vocals ect. Not one or two persons makes the band. Ty for you awesome reactions on this band. ❤
Well, the best vocalist of Nightwish is Marko, obviously. Proven time and again. 😅 But yeah, I know what you mean. The whole Nightwish family should just give a huge hug to each other and enjoy how sophisticated the songs are.
Nightwish was built on its history and all of them (Tarja, Annete and Floor) are part of that. All three brought unique sounds and technical capacity. I have seen the band live with all three and honestly my personal favorite is Floor, but I saw two awesome shows with Tarja and Annete. Tarja is a monster of a singer, Annete brought Nightwish a key element of a more mainstream sound that enlarged the audience and birthed material like Imaginereum. Floor is the metalhead, power frontwoman, big as life and tecnically masterful.
Thanks for that. The Nightwish singer battle staged by fans needs to finally end.
Thank you for keeping your feed positive and clean. I'm and always have been so tired of the comparison people make between the vocalists. It has to be about music and nothing else.
Everybody starts fanboying Tarja or Floor and end up being fanboy of Marco \w/ ... that's how good Marco is.

Ive been watching all Tank videos, you see different comments there as the official NW songs, because tank tries to bring both singers politely. Their cover is sooooooo good. It's their own unique take on the song, but by watching them perform it you can tell the guys have so much love and respect for the original and are so stoked to be playing it.

I know everyone's always into the "hard stuff". But someone really has to mention Sleeping Sun here at some point, and I'll happily do it. They've done some great, great ballads, and Sleeping Sun is just one of the classic Nightwish songs that every Nightwish fan should know.

Yeah, this is the super version of the Phantom of the opera! Tarja and Marko sound extremely good together! And the energy is at level 11 in this version...
Tarja is a legend and inspired a generation of metal singers - Floor included. Technically, Floor is a top to bottom better singer, sure, but that doesn’t make Tarja any less of a beast in her own right, and lets be honest - without Tarja there would be no Floor. Its great that you’re taking this approach to your Nightwish journey, super respectful and appreciated. You should check out Floor and Henk Poort performing an abbreviated version of this track on Beste Zangers, from late last year (don’t even do a vid, just check it out for yourself to enjoy- it’s fantastic). For future NW, you should definitely hit Seven Days to the Wolves from Wembley, because it would be right up your damn alley, and Ghost River from Wacken, because your buddy (Ok, everyone’s buddy) Chase hasn’t hit it yet and it would be cool for you to beat him to a NW punch.
Without Tarja and NightWish, Epica would not exist. Simone Simons at 14, she had one year of pop singing lessons, and at 15, she switched to classical singing after listening to Nightwish's Oceanborn, which remains her favorite Nightwish album.
Technically speaking, is that true, though? I highly doubt that it is. Because both singers are highly trained vocal technicians. We know Floor's style tends to be different, but that's to be expected: they're both individuals.
And to keep some perspective, let's remember that in the End of an Era concert Tarja was still pretty young, and not in her prime. She was around 26 or 27, I think. Since then, just like with Floor, she has continued to train and practice her art. I bring this up because it's common for fans to say such things, but I don't think it's fair to Tarja to say such things. After all, Tarja didn't quit Nightwish and call it good. Just the opposite; she continued to grow and learn, and has performed more concerts and recorded many more records in her solo career than she did with Nightwish.
"Nemo" is definitely my suggestion for a Tarja specific song, it's the one of the only two songs that I just do not like to hear anyone but Tarja sing, the other being "Over the Hills" (that one mostly for just pure sentimental reasons where as for "Nemo" I just feel like it fits her voice so perfectly).
Also, Marko is obviously the best NW singer of all time.
Welcome to the Marko fanboy club Tank! As you no doubt have heard, he has quite a lot of solo and guest performances. That's an extremely fun rabbit hole to head down. A personal favorite is "Stones" from his latest solo album.
I just bought that album on vinyl. It's so fantastic.

You should see Nightwish - Walking in the Air (live in Tampere 2000) and also their Lowlands 2005 concert Wish I Had A Angel and Dark Chest of Wonders for some Tarja at her best.
So... just as one point of clarification, Phantom of the Opera is NOT an opera, it's a Broadway show. Great job on the reaction, though!
I know I keep requesting these since you first started asking for Tarja-era songs, but the two songs that typify the Nightwish sound from that era are Nemo and Ever Dream. I really hope you react to at least one of those before leaving Tarja in the rearview mirror! Floor also does a great job on both, but Nemo especially is the song that got Nightwish to where they are today.

@@nicod1361 Tank specifically asked for recommendations with Tarja. Recommending the Floor versions of songs isn't helpful for him on that part of his Nightwish journey. I do also love the Floor and Henk version of Phantom and watch it regularly, and would love for Tank to also react to it (as well as all of the other Beste Zangers performances). It's possible to like both!
@@nicod1361 Sure they are good, and some day he likely will react to those. But now it's not about what each favours, so leave those maths out. It's odd anyway: music is not sports where you can count meters and seconds for who's best. I personally like some songs by Tarja, some by Floor, and a few by Anette. The colour of the voice.
Tank has taken the route to first listen many songs of the old Nightwish, Tarja era. Likely to get the Nw evolution path. That's why for the immediate suggestions pick some Tarja songs. You can naturally always mention there you like those more by Floor. But they will come later.
The songs I liked more when I was young....er are The Kinslayer, Passion & The Opera and Wishmaster
Marko have this unique ability to make great singers even better, when he does duets. I mean Floor, Tarja, Charlotte (Delain - The Gathering), etc. etc. And on his own he is amazing aswell.
It’s good to hear Jukka getting some recognition, he was awesome and deserves far more recognition than he usually gets.

Man, I'm sorry that the Tarja vs Floor nastiness has finally percolated into your comments section.
There are a group of people who grew up on the first decade of Nightwish and will always have a deep emotional connection to Tarja. To them, no other singer will be able to take them back to that place. I understand.
Then there's another group of people who came in after Floor joined the band & fell in love with her (for obvious reasons) before even realizing there were previous singers. They have trouble empathizing with the first group.
Ultimately, thanks for keeping things civil. This is your journey, and we're just along for a ride. I still recommend going straight into Poet & the Pendulum immediately after you finish the Tarja era. You have demonstrated that you're ready.

Yes, Poet and the Pendulum wit Anette, I agree. That's what you meant Andrew, huh? I think most zealous Tarja fans left long ago, many of them hate(d) the band for what they did. RUclips wasn't even a thing when this divide happened. Those who stayed with NW were with Anette for six years and continue with Floor: so quite tolerant. New Floor fans that make most of the reaction-army, they didn't need to stay through other vocalists, how is their tolerance? Will they still be the band if/when Floor leaves?
I'm an old school fan from way back in the day before Annet was even considered singing for Nightwish. I remember how big of a deal that was, a lot of people stoped listening to NW because Tarja left. But I personally love Floor, she's just amazing! And I even like her more now. I never thought I'd say that!

I'd like to suggest that maybe they have a hard time empathizing because they're consistently told that they're wrong for loving Floor, there is a vocal minority of Tarja fans, (not all Tarja fans are like this, of course) who will actively seek out floor videos to say that she's horrible, and embarrassing herself, and how she shouldn't try to sing Tarja songs, and it create this hostility between the two groups. Again, MOST Tarja fans aren't like this, but those are the ones Floor fans see. It sucks because they're both absolute TREASURES and Nightwish has been absolutely beyond lucky to have both of them

It's so refreshing to see someone who pays attention to the whole band and not just Tarja (and occasionally Marco). In fact, I believe you're the only *reactioner* who's said anything about Emppu. He's often "forgotten" since he doesn't really stick out by doing complex solos or other stuff people typically associate with great guitarists. He shows up, performs well, and he always sounds in tune with the band. No more, no less. Not to mention his great stage presence as well! The guy is captivating and full of energy :)
Someone put it well: Emppu is the lone guitarist in a band with pompous sound. Have you ever felt there was not enough guitar on a Nightwish song? He comes there, tells his part of the story exactly as Tuomas wanted it and makes no fuss about himself.
Definitely give a watch and listen to Marko's performance of 'The Islander' from the Tampere performance...

Tarja Turunen was the original Nightwish vocalist for almost a decade, defining a big part of their sound with her classically infused vocal techniques which combined perfectly with Nightwish's inicial power metal and later symphonic metal sound, and also with Marco's vocals, as you noticed it was a perfect match in every way!
The great thing is that Tarja has been having an amazing solo career in the last 15 years... Her voice is really high (her last note on this one is an Eb6), but also a full and really powerfull sound (and in her career she always keeps on experimenting new things with her vocals, including a haunting dark and lower register she can belt out), plus having this theatrical presence on stage... I'm really glad you liked it!

Great choice! Personally I would love to see you explore Marco more. Try his cover of "High Hopes' from this same show, and "The Islander" as well as "While your lips are still red." He is the primary singer in these.
Also, this isnt a music video or anything, but if you want to check out the heaviest nightwish song, try "Master Passion Greed." I thought it was an old Extreme metal band playing at first lmao. Marco does all the vocals with this and it's a banger!!

You are still in so beginning of your Nw journey, you haven't still heard anything from Tampere or Wembley shows with Floor, whole Anette era and even more old school than "End of an era", the "From wishes to eternity" dvd. So many great songs to hear, I'm quite jealous to you :)

So nice to hear Invincible in the background at the end, it's my favourite from Pat Benatar and I still have my '7 single of it. Back in the days, I wished it had been more successful over here in Germany (11 weeks in the top 100, highest ranking 31), after Love is a Battlefield and We Belong were both top 10 hits.
There were some great duets with Tarja and Marco in the brief time they were in the band together. The Siren, Feel for You, Dead to the World, Wish I had and Angel.
The amazing thing is, at the time they were performing this live, the tension between Taja and the rest of the band was at boiling point, and she got fired soon after the concert. This performance was magic and you cannot notice any of the friction going on within the band.
After that I really encourage you to see other songs with Marko as the main singer, like The Islander. He's really an awesome singer!

PLEASE DO PLANET HELL!!! HOLY SH*T! lol Really though. If you were giving Jukka some love in this one, wait until you see him on that one. From the intro, to the part where he breaks a stick and grabs another one so fast you can barely tell, to his aggro expression while he plays. I know I'm probably the biggest Jukka fan fanboy on your chanel, but he basically inspired me to continue playing music and pull myself out of depression, so he's definitely my favorite drummer. I have his autograph tattooed on me with a tribute tattoo I had done. Its a crazy story but I'd be happy to tell you in a message.
I thank you and appreciate your neutral standing in regard to singers of Nightwish. Lots of reactors get pushed by fans into liking or saying something favorable to their preferred singer. It is becoming unpleasant especially when they use dismissive comment or even hateful comments to compare singer.
Great job on Emppu's gear, man! He definitely used two guitars during the tour, the purple one tuned to DGCFAD and a white one tuned to EADGBE. For effects pedals, Boss all the way. Look at his power stance, definitely gives old man Hetfield a run. Haha.

My mom, always told me Phantom of the Opera was the first "live show" they ever took me to ^^' Can't remember it though as I just was a little baby back then, but yes, hitting in the sweet spot, this one ;) Marco's cleans with that ever-underlying gnarl really does serve the character of the phantom in the musical quite well 🥰

Jukka Nevalainen is an incredible drummer. He doesn't play drums, he dances behind the drums. His skill stands out in the intro of the song BLASS THE CHILD live (end of an era DVD).

All i want to say about tarja and floor is that tarja was perfect for nightwish back then and floor is perfect now, floor is the best thing that could happen to nightwish after tarja left the band, she put the band on a whole new level.

So glad you did this one! I Wish I Had an Angel, same concert. It was the last song, and the one before they handed Tarja a letter to fire her. You can see the bands emotions at the end thinking it may be the last song they ever play.
If you want to see Floor's take on the song, checkout Beste Zangers 2019, where she sang with Henk Poort. It's pretty priceless.

The whole Floor vs Tarja rivalry is rather funny, given that the two of them seem to be getting along just fine. I believe Floor is the best fit for Nightwish, but Tarja shines when a more operatic approach is called for, just as Anette is stellar at rapid-fire lyrics (as shown in the songs written for her). But yes, we can all agree that Marco is the best vocalist of the band. Troy ain't half bad either.
A "underreacted" song from Tarja is from the same concert, End of an Era called Slaying the Dreamer. Otherwise go even older to the From wishes to eternity dvd. Tarjas voice is great there and the songs suits her voice perfectly.
1. Marco is so easy to fall in love with. He is a great vocalist and so charming.
2. Tarja singing those opening lines gives me goosebumps every single time.
I know you are in Nightwish territory, but perhaps when you get a moment, check out Tarja’s solo stuff. It is so good!

marco is not only a fantastic musician and singer, but also such a charming, cool, wise, humorous and friendly person. all members of this band are important for the chemistry, that´s now in the band and that you can feel, when they are performing. considering marco I´m under the impression, that his personality is so important for the band. excuse the metaphor, I couldn´t find a better one, marco seems to be something like the "fatherfigure" for nw. but what do I know? thank you for your reaction, tank.
I have a nice Tuomas quote for you: "...he (Marko) really brought a lot of serenity to the band. He’s a very calm guy and almost never gets angry. Whenever we have fights, everybody starts yelling and he is the one who says: come on let’s talk about it.

I love Kai! but seeing Jukka play gives you that feeling of youth, energy and passion..like a sense of seeing a small lineup making it big and staying humble through the years. Especially in the High Hopes cover from this same show

Not that you've triggered the domino effect, from this one you go straight to the "Phantom of the Opera" duet by Floor and her opera influence, Henk Poort, on the Dutch TV show, Beste Zangers (Best Singers). Like always, Floor will be Floor and will melt you as usual, but in a surprise twist, I don't know how you'll react to Henk. Marco's early bass tone on Century Child, Once, and on EoaE gives me more tone envy than anyone. Cuts through more here than on the later stuff post Tarja. Check out The Siren and Creek Mary's Blood as better examples but this whole show is a clinic on a bass tone that cuts through the mix. Alone, not the sound I would dial up, but perfection for the overall music. Creek Marys Blood has the bonus of John Two Hawks playing a Native American flute

Pat Benatar is my favorite female singer of all time and I have been lucky to see her live 3 times. Its 2020 and I am still waiting for the "ROCK N ROLL HALL OF SHAME" to gets its head out of its ass. I noticed the poster on your wall the first video I watched and its amazing that you got to tour with her and Neil.

This is so great version with NW style - actually the best one... Tuomas tuned this classic for them to rock. I think Marco and Tarja just not sound great but also act the play of Phantom and Christine. Yes ...this is End Of and Era...they started with yellow and later came black, red, and finally white outfit + mic. Yes Jukka is awesome drummer and easily not understood how great he (too) is.
This is one of my favorite Nightwish performances. It is very iconic. In addition, the parallel that is possible between the history of Nightwish and the story told by the musical is very interesting. Tarja would be Christine and Tuomas would be the Phantom. In the musical's history, the Phantom is in love with Christine. It is an unrequited and stormy love. In addition, the Phantom is heard through Christine when she sings his compositions. The story of Nightwish is marked by dramas and many say that Tuomas suffered from an unrequited love for Tarja. Tuomas used to say that Tarja was the voice that best expressed his feelings. The lyrics of songs in Tarja's day were often very confessional. Christine was the voice of the Phantom, while Tarja was the voice of Tuomas. In the musical, the Phantom disputes Cristine with Raoul. At Nightwish, Marcelo (Tarja's current husband) said that Tuomas disputed Tarja's love (read the answer he gave to question 36 of the fans). Nightwish's choice to cover The Phantom of the Opera, just the part where Christine and the Phantom sing together, seems to be a very interesting coincidence, or who knows, it might even be a choice made by the unconscious, if the situation is viewed from a psychoanalytic perspective

I feel like he's seriously underappreciated; that guy really brought a hell of a lot of energy, beating his drums like they insulted his mother lol I was really sad when he had to leave, but health comes first.
