Oh dear, now you've put the cat among the pigeons! Fan opinion on the 3 singers that Nightwish has had is almost as likely to break into arguments as politics! The sequence was Tarja Turunen, then Anette Olzon, and now Floor Jansen. All 3 are sopranos, Tarja and Floor both have classical training. As you mentioned Tarja tended to stay in the classical style when she snag with Nightwish. Anette has a much britgher, brassy sound, to me, and listening to songs sung by Anette and either Tarja or Floor, you can tell the mixing/arranging/sound was changed to have the music better mesh with her vocals. With Floor, the band was able to go back to the 'original' style, as her voice has the power to compete with the heavier playing.

It is so great to have some one give props to Marco. He is an amazing musician. If you want to hear some other Marco songs here are some suggestions. Nightwish did a cover song of Pink Floyd's song "High Hopes". Marco sang that at the End of an Era concert. "The Islander" at Tampere, "Master Passion Greed" studio version, because it has never been done live that I know of. High Hopes is my favorite. Thanks!

What's most impressive about Nightwish reaction videos are mostly that people want to measure the female singers... Yet Marco's still probably more important then the female front for me. Tarja's awesome, Anette was ok in the songs tailored for her and Floors reaally great... but somehow Marco's like the keyplayer in so many great songs, at least for me.

I became a fan of Nightwish while Tarja was still still in the band, and to this day I very much prefer the way she sang the old songs.
However I am glad that they have found Floor. I think she's an amazingly talented singer, and fit the ascetic of the band very well, even if I do prefer the old versions.

Finally someone to trully appreciate Marco in this one. Everyone request this wanting to show Tarja's abilities but as a classical trained singer she is more used to this. So IMHO Marco is the real star here.
Floor is their third singer came in the end of 2012(there is another one between Tarja and Floor called Anette Olzon - conventional poppy voice) and is amazingly diverse as she gives many opportunities to the band's songwriting (speaking of Floor if it's not clear heheh..)

So I think Tarja shines most in the stuff that was written for her but Floor is brilliantly versatile in being able to sing the songs for all three singers. I grew up with Tarja so I will always like her most but that really doesn't take anything away from Floor.

Marco actually has nerve damage in one of his vocal cords. In the 90's he went through a surgery to remove a polyp from that vocal cord, which caused the damage. He almost lost his voice and had to train really hard to get most of his vocal register back. Dispite of that his vocal cords will never "synch" again, and, for example, his clean falsetto is gone for good.

Well there are a lot of Nightwish fans that prefer Tarja and they still dreaming of a reunion, they hope that Tarja will be back again and they mostly are the old fans of the band. The ones that became fans after Tarja's era usually prefer Floor over her. That's the biggest disagreement between the fans. But deep down all of us agree that Tuomas Holopainen (the keyboard player and composer of almost every Nightwish song) is a music genius

They balanced each other, marco is very loud and gritty and tarja had just as strong volume but smooth and warm. Floor seems to excel at 2 speeds, shouting belting (which I love, she sounds great with that) or gentle and thin (so pretty but not strong volume). She gets overpowered by Marco I feel. Tarja just has such a powerful and rich voice that complemented Marcos high tension power metal screeching without ever being drowned out. Floor and Tarja each have their strengths and weaknesses, I love them both, but Tarja has never been overpowered or drowned out by ANYONE she has shared a stage with male or female. Floor herself has even been overpowered by Tarja onstage lol.

Oh man, asking about Floor vs Tarja is a can of worms. As someone who discovered them somewhat recently, First years with Tarja is unique with her dark soprano voice, its really great stuff, I do not enjoy the middle singer Annette really at all, then Floor who is not as classically inclined as Tarja, but is more versatile with her style, very very good again. You will have people who are devoted to one or the other, I just try to enjoy them for what they have and try not to get too deep in the weeds with the hardcore fans.

I listened to them quite often back when Tarja was the singer, but after she left I kinda lost interest. I saw them in Wacken 2008 with Anette and was absolutely not impressed, even devastated.I listened to the old songs from time to time of course, but I didn't listen to anything new. And I only recently found out about Floor and now I'm rediscovering them. I can't say if I like Tarja or Floor better, they are both amazing. Some songs I still like better with Tarja (for example Romanticide) but in others Floor just nails it.

      @mortisrat 5 лет назад +2

@@AmarthwenNarmacil I also saw them sometime around then in London. It was not good. She came on-stage wearing jeans and a t-shirt and that just made it look like she didn't even care. I've never heard a crowd cheer so loudly every time the band announced they were about to play an instrumental track!
Anette was a perfectly adequate singer, but in a band where nobody else could be described as merely adequate that was not enough. I wasn't sure what to expect with Floor, but from the first time I heard her it was clear she was an extraordianary singer. I hope I can go and see them next time they're here.

For me Anette years in Nightwish were really great. Although I do love Tarja's singing very, very much, I do listen mostly Anette. She is more listenable to me, and her ballads and slow songs are so soft and bautiful. "Eva", "Slow Love Slow" and "Medows of Heaven" for example. And in the kick ass rock songs like Bye bye Beautiful for example, I love her bright and girly voice with intense belting.

I think with Tarja, Anette and Floor music of the Nighwish can be divided to three different eras. Kinda like with Deep Purple. I think it's positive thing. When I'm in the mood for faster paced power metal with operatic vocals, I pick up "Oceanborn" album from 1998. If I want something cinematic, "tim burtonesque", I choose "Imaginaerum" album from 2011. When I'm in the mood for more traditional symphonic heavy metal (with folk elements), I pick up the latest "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" album. Some people only like one side of this band, and I understand that perfectly. Marco is one of the pioneers in finnish heavy metal scene since the 80's, with his band Tarot. Long before he joined to Nightwish. This song, "Tides" is my all-time favourite performances by Marco. Really emotional singing, ridilously good song! ruclips.net/video/3X9lLP7eHW0/видео.html

Responding 2vu're last comment/question, nightwish fans are really divided, some still love Tarja and her 'operatic/classic' kind of singing, other's prefer Floor Jansen's kind of singing for many different reasons.... I like them both, I prefer Floor because I was already a fan in the 2 other bands that's she's been before going 2 nightwish and I think she can be so versatile, because she goes out of her confort zone and do do many different kinds of singing in just 1 song, she can do classic as well, differently from Tarja but she always tries to sing nightwish (old) songs in her own way.... Even the songs that were written to Annette Olzon witch was the second nightwish lead singer.... That's my opinion anyway....

Here is the thing: The problem is not who is singing but, the approach and style, which changed way much after Tarja left. I have listened to Nightwish since 2001, and what i liked about them was that unique mix of Opera with Metal, Tarja and Marko complementing each-other very well. Then Tarja's era ended with no explanation to why, and quickly their approach changed to a more pop-rock style with Anette (like Evanescence, and many others at that time). With that change, they went from magical and angelical, rock-opera to a more crowd pleasing pop-rock. Still their most liked repertoire was Metal-Opera and Anette wasn't cutting it on live shows, certainly not to Tarja's level. So they moved to Floor, a tremendous singer, a master at that if you will. She can get close to Tarja's on Rock-Opera old songs, and nail through their new Pop-rock stuff. But thats the big thing ppl are missing from Nightwish, their complete disregard for their magical roots, and becoming another pop-rock band to gain in followers.

Awesome reaction, mate! Great to see you appreciating Marco's performance that much. At first I couldn't understand what Marco sing (screams) in the last parts, but after watching the original version of the song (Andrew Lloyd Webber) I realized there are actual words there lol. Anyway I listened to Nightwish few years before Tarja left and that was a big disappointment at the time. Took a while to get used Anette when her era started, she couldn't sing Tarja's songs so I wasn't listening to them much, but then came Floor and right from the first amateur live footage I loved her voice, and she made Nightwish whole again. On many of the old songs I prefer to listen Tarja's performances since the song isn't the same without her, but on the other hand Floor has made many performances better. Ghost Love Score is a great example. And let's not forget Anette, she has her songs, but unfortunately there are not many lives of her singing.

If you are digging Marco, as others have noted, check out "the islander"(which he wrote), or "while your lips are still red". He also did vocals for another band called "northern kings" that does metal covers of pop songs like sledgehammer, kiss from a rose, dont stop believing, and hello. He also regularly does duets with the band "delain", like "control the storm"

In fact, Floor was also trained as a classical singer but she doesn't sing like that very often now. You should listen to the song The Key, a song of her old band After Forever. And you'll see her full potential :D

Really enjoyed watching this one. Nightwish, I see it as a moving vehicle. The singers do not make what Nightwish is. They are merely instruments to the band. Tuomas is the conductor. To me Nightwish has been exactly what they needed to be in our timeline of existence. I personally have enjoyed the ride, yes even with Annette. I feel Dark Passion Play is exactly what it needs to be. A marvelous band in its entirety and i consider it a privilege to be on this earth in this time as their music continues to play in accord with my life.

One of the greatest cover songs ever made. Another great song with Tarja and Marco is Ever Dream from the same End Of An Era show, you should see to that as well. Their voices sound so good together in the chorus! With Floor I would very much suggest Poet And The Pendulum, it's a beautiful great song and Floor makes it perfect

Both, Floor and Tarja are great singers, Its no about them is about how do you like the band to sound. For me is with Tarja. I prefer that Nightwish. For others it will be with Floor. Anette was to "pop" voice, even she is good.

I really enjoyed seeing Marco singing. If you want to choose another Nigthwish Song, where he has a bigger part, please check out High Hopes, it is a Pnk Floyd Cover.
If you want to check out seeing marco as a lead singer, you really should go for Tarot and their song "Tides". It really shows Marcos vocal range ...
From Nightwish, please react to Ghost River.
Between Floor and Tarja I cannot make a joice. both are great singers, but in the end, i think, Tarja wants more than nightwish can give her. and with floor at the moment the band is really perfect. Floor says, she sees them as their brothers.
Yesterday I watched an interview from brasil where marco was asked, if he has talked to Tarja during they did the christmas shows in finland together, and he said they talked a lot and decided to let the past in the past.
Their break up after this concert (2005, Finnland, hartwell arena) was really ... bad.

Everyone always overlooks Marco's extreme talent, so it's great to see that finally appreciated. I personally prefer Floor, I find her overall tone more appealing than Tarja's which can get a bit grating at times. But both are definitely talented. Annette isn't so bad either, I think she gets an undeservedly bad rap. Sure her voice is more suited to pop, but that doesn't mean that she isn't a talented vocalist in her own right.

Tarja then Annette then Floor :) Each brought a unique sound to the band in their time. I do love Tarja as I found the band with her when I was little and my dad was listening to them (bit of nostalgia there). The first time I saw them live Annette was their singer and her tone is completely different- it's a lot brighter and not really what you'd expect from the band. Floor coming in was a great choice honestly. She's an incredible singer and has more of the dark tone that Tarja had but is still completely different from her. Each singer for the band has been unique, but has done fantastic work for the group.
Also thank you for giving Marco the props he deserves! Too many people overlook him but he really does good work.

In answer to your question, Tarja (Tar-ee-a) was the original voice of Nightwish and was perfect for introducing the whole Symphonic metal genera of a classical soprano voice against a metal band with orchestral support. She was/is a great singer and I love her work with Nightwish.
Annette, their second singer, was quite competent, but not really a great fit for nightwish's sound. Floor Jansen (Yan-sen) is the perfect answer for where Nightwish has developed to in the intervening years. The newer material needed a singer who could cover both the classical operatic sound and a heavier rock/metal sound, Floor can do both and is one of the great singers of her generation. Nightwish is very fortunate to have signed her.
I would very much suggest listening to and reacting to Floor singing: "Ghost Love Score" live at Wacken Open Air 2013. Here is a link: ruclips.net/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/видео.html That is unquestionably one of Floor's greatest performances with Nightwish and the song really shows the full range of her abilities. She has said it is her favorite Nightwish song to sing.

My first vocal coaches were classically trained. I must say I learned a lot from them, particularly they proved to me that although I can sing down to a C3 I am actually a mezzo soprano. However I am a rock singer ; that's where my soul is; singing songs by Chris Cornell and the classical style doesn't really work so well for this 😂.
From you I have learned to remind myself keep it steady and even when I sing ; like a gentle flexing while releasing; hold on to the sound rather than go totally wild. (Sometimes I like to sing for sensation if that makes any sense and that doesn't always work either) 😂
Fairly recently I have suddenly acquired this occasional natural rasp when I sing; it comes out on its own; it is not forced and it feels like it comes from above the vocal chords if that makes any sense. I know it is not a damaging kind of distortion. Pretty cool stuff. I also think as great as it can be to have vocal coaches; one needs to experiment with their sound themselves. No one is the expert of your own voice except for you yourself. To sing well you need to let go and stop judging; easier said than done but quite necessary!
