  • Today I show you a useful print that I found. It is for pegboard hooks. No, it's not that exciting, but organization is a necessary evil. Like getting a root canal or something. If you need it, i mean. Unneeded dental surgery is not advisable.
    Yes, I realize the thumbnail shows hammers held up by screws next to the 3D printed hooks holding the bead roller dies. You can print hammer holders, but I didn't yet.
    Anyway, these pegboard hooks and other tools are very useful for organizing my garage/shop. Organizing my tools is a bit of an obsession, I like things hanging on the wall and off the floor and shelves. Despite being printed from weak PLA, they are strong enough to hold up a solid steel bead roller die. They can even hold up several hammers. I show you in the video. Then I break it with a hammer. Lots of things break with hammers. I mentioned dental surgery earlier, hammers can cause that.
    The Print i used for this video is available here:

    6:00 fun fact - PLA is stronger than ABS. It's also stiffer. And more brittle.

      Paul's Garage so you're not a barnacules fan lol, nevermind... but yes, whack that phone into shape - let it get acquainted with the new metal working tools perhaps

    Nice! If you ever need a super hefty tool holder, you could try lost PLA casting.

      +eviltwinx I'm going to try lost PLA here pretty soon, actually. I got some wax to help (figuring lost wax and lost PLA should work together) just haven't had time yet

    I see folks suggesting “lost PLA casting”, but using these as patterns for greensand casting could get you many hooks per print.

    these hooks look like they'd be the perfect thing to experiment with lost Pla casting...

    A file might work. If for some reason you don't have any small files, maybe your wife can supply you with an Emery (Emory?) board.

    My old garage had walls covered in peg board. I hated it. I got my reasons. I have buckets of peg board hardware because of that though.

    • @PaulsGarage
      @PaulsGarage  7 лет назад

      +Paul Frederick I wasn't a fan of it either but since it was covering some giant holes in the drywall I just left it. I think plywood with screws in it would be better. Most of the stuff is screwed on, but I can't help but use some nearly free plastic hoons

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 7 лет назад

      That's why that garage was completely covered in peg board. It was the cheapest material to throw on the wall. But I was always paranoid welding near it. I always worried about popping a spark behind the wall and burning the place down. Then there's the condition tools got in hanging on the wall. Past that my only gripe is the inefficiency. There's better storage solutions that wall real estate can be used for than a single layer of tools. There's literally not a single thing I can think of that I like about peg board. I don't even like how it looks. I will say those 3D printed hooks did seem to stick in the board good. I hated hooks falling out, and having to bend over to pick them up. I really hated hooks falling out. Blow outs was another thing I despised. When I hung something really heavy off the peg board and it broke the peg board. That's a blow out. Yup I hate the crap with a passion. Peg board is cardboard masquerading as something else.

    • @PaulsGarage
      @PaulsGarage  7 лет назад

      +Paul Frederick I know what you mean, especially about the blow outs and inefficiency. A bunch of my tools are screwed into the peg board so I can pack them more tightly. For some particularly heavy things I slid a board behind the pegboard (it's on a frame out 3/4" from the wall) and screwed through the pegboard into the backing board like a doubler. Fortunately my board isn't as cheap as some, it seems fairly sturdy, but nowhere near as strong as what plywood would be. Fortunately these were already in the garage when I moved in so they were free! Can't beat free.

    In my experience, those types of J-hooks with the bottom stabilizer pegs are the best. I'd be careful how much you trim off that peg because you want it to be a tight fit to the hole. Prevents the hook from moving sideways and such or grabbing on your tool and falling off the wall. (It also occurred to me that you probably know all this already...) They look really nice printed up like that though! With the blueprints you got for them, can you edit them to make your own custom-length hooks?

    • @PaulsGarage
      @PaulsGarage  7 лет назад

      +Andrew Murphy I think I can adjust them a little in fusion 360 maybe, but I haven't tried. The part I was trimming actually goes through the peg board and sticks out the other side, so it didn't make them any looser, just easier to put in. I still need a hammer to put them in, and a knife or something to pry them off. They are pretty awesome, definitely stronger than I expected

    nice!!! when you say some models require post processing and i need to change some settings do you mean you use the prusa control slicer and fix some models there? or do you use another slicer?

    • @PaulsGarage
      @PaulsGarage  7 лет назад

      +Armored Charlie Prusa Control doesn't really have options to fix stuff, but I use slic3r which is basically the same but has more options. Really, the prints came out great, but the pegs were a bit thick. It's good because they fit in tight, but sometimes they wouldn't go in. That is in part because my peg boards we painted so the holes have paint in them. Also I get a little bit of bottom layer squish-out so I have to trim a little of that. Not a big problem with these hooks, but some other models require more trimming to get stuff to fit nicely.

    Awesome! I can't wait for more of your videos especially 3D printing ones. I am buying a 3D printer soon by prusa its and anet a8 for only $200 but supposed to have great capabilities. You should print a pocket combination safe on thingiverse! It looks cool but kind of useless. It will be the first thing I print!

    • @PaulsGarage

      +Kendall Snyder the Anet is a prusa clone i think, not made by prusa, but I have heard some pretty good reviews. Let me know how you like it

    first you say it takes 20 minutes of waiting and then you break it. you can watch this video TWICE! that's how much time you hammered there
    I've always lived on a high place in my neighborhood. and most of the time not on the ground floor. so if it ever floods I won't be the first to be affected
    that stubborn one might work with a vertical holderthingy. if you know how to adjust the model so it fits.

    • @PaulsGarage
      @PaulsGarage  7 лет назад

      +whoeveriam0iam14222 fortunately the 20 minutes were the printer's 20 minutes, not mine. I was off doing other stuff. Besides, you gotta test this stuff, and no better test than to destruction!
