  • Body integrity identity disorder is a condition in which a healthy person believes that he or she is meant to be disabled. People with this condition often seek to harm themselves to attain their desired disability. The Doctors and Dr. Phil discuss the ethical dilemma facing medical professionals who encounter BIID patients.

      Dr Phil is a clinical psychologist and he understands mental illness. Dr Travis and the other female doctor are not trained in mental illness, thus, they don't understand abnormal human behaviours, this is the stigma of having a mental illness.

    I can understand that this lady wants to be blind. But drain cleaner in her eyes to ruin her sight????? My daughter was born blind in one of her eyes and I would give my left arm, and I am left handed to have her see again. This lady could have donated the eyes or parts of them to help someone like my lovely daughter, NO, I'd give my left eye to have my daughter see again. This was reckless by her and her doctor. He could have sent her to an eye doctor to have her eyes transplanted to someone like my daughter or someone in a terrible accident. I feel like the lady doctor on this video. My hands are shaking as I write this. I believe this is a travesty to the blind community. I have to stop writing this because I'm afraid to say something I'll regret. God bless. If anyone is thinking of doing something like this, please at least give your "disability" to someone who could use it, don't waste that opportunity to help someone fix the disability you wish to have. +Jody Pettit I don't know how you think you can "understand" that this sick woman wants to be blind, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
      Dear Jody, you should never be fearful of voicing what you really want to say. Who knows? Maybe, your words could change the thinking of an ignorant society. I'm so sorry about your daughter. I hope and pray that some day medical advancements can give your daughter sight. Bless her!
      However, do not give this crazy woman any credence. She wasted a gift. There has been much research done on her story. Dr. Phil was being too kind to her as far as her claim that her psychologist aided her in blinding herself. The alleged psychologist was PROVEN to have NEVER met this woman or to have treated her. She is insane. She pulled his name from a phone book.
      Even though you think that she should have donated her eyes or parts of her eyes to other people, we do not live in a society that that takes advantage of insane people. We never should!!
      Your hands are shaking because you are a normal person. You cannot imagine why anyone would ever do this to herself, even though, you try to be sympathetic to her obvious mental disorder. The greatest thing you can do for someone like Jewel is to pray that the state mental health hospitals are re-opened so that people like Jewel cannot harm themselves or others around them.

    This is a perfect example of why you should treat mental illness, rather than reinforce or enable it to continue. My guess, that psychologist really didn't know anything about her, she probably read his work or something and obsessed over it. Then after she blinded herself, she HAD to find someone to blame so then she could be the misunderstood victim.

    I disagree with many of the comments. The blonde doctor was making sense. Mutilating your body is NOT normal. For crying out loud, have we become a society so far removed from reality that we see nothing wrong with this? And don't say "they are only hurting themselves" because they're not. She went to an ER for treatment. She had surgeries. She continues to see a doctor for eye issues, all because of HER actions. We have to pay for this with higher premiums and out of pocket costs or taxes, if she didn't have insurance. Is she going to claim disability now too? Another good question. Someone who really is blind and disabled is getting the same benefits as someone who purposely took her own sight? I don't want the money I work for to go to her, not one penny. How many other mentally unstable people are going to see this and decide to do it? How many young people with mental health issues will see this and use it as a cry for attention? It's also telling when people say well this is wrong but chopping off your penis and testicles so you can be a "woman" is ok. No, it's not any different. I know that's not PC but the truth isn't always PC. This is an example of the slippery slope we are on as a society and common sense and reality are not allowed in it.

    It's not a disorder. I feel like I had a slight version of this growing up. I think it is a cry for attention that festers and becomes a obsession. Being unique is intoxicating and pity is the most tragic and romantic version. I think it's that plus it's a cop out for failure. I lied about having bad eyesight to get glasses as a kid and i pretended to have ADD so I had an excuse to not do well. I thought about breaking my arm when I saw people come to class with casts on and got all the attention. I realized how petty it is when I got a bit older but I can see people getting addicted to that but maybe I'm way off.

      Same thing with me I wouldn’t really call it a body integrity thing but I always wanted certain disabilities and stuff. I currently have glasses but for some reason I’ve always wanted everything to be more blurry than it is right now. I always wish that I fell on the ground and broke my teeth or something for braces. I used to throw myself on the ground hit myself into the wall and stuff trying to break my bones. I used to punch myself in the eye trying to get a black eye, rub poop and pee into a deep cut trying to get infection, tried to give myself conjunctivitis(after successfully giving myself it once), and even trying to give myself a deep gash so that I could end up in the hospital. I remember being younger and wrapping up my arms trying to make it look like I had a cast. I don’t really know what was wrong with me but after getting hurt a few times I just loved having the injury on my body and I love the attention you get in the hospital. Every time I get injured or sick or go to the hospital it excites me. I’ve never had really any intervention for it but I just don’t really try to hurt myself anymore after so many failed attempts although I still save her and long for injuries and illnesses and I love having conditions or just being different in general.

      It IS a disorder and probably neurologically based. A scientist studying it ruled out the cry for attention hypothesis because of the precision of the cut an amputee wannabe wanted. It would always be the same place to an inch. A brain study was done on a man who believe his left leg beneath the knee didn't belong there. He was touched on various parts of his body and it lit up normally except the part he said shouldn't be there. Quite simply, there is a body map in your brain. That map is defective in some people.

    The blonde lady is making the false dichotomy fallacy. It is possible to admit partial fault in a situation. There is no contradiction in saying "I shouldn't have gone about it in the way I did, but I also don't think he should have assisted me in doing so." I am not necessarily saying that this is the case, but I am saying the blonde woman's statement is not true. Went to reply to a comment but realised something entirely different:
    totally agree on the sight thing but in terms of gender change, I think that's important if you're trapped in the wrong body (ie a women's body when you're a man OR vice versa). As I type this I understand that this women probably felt this way too but about her sight. I wish she could have sought out help beforehand (from a qualified professional) and I'm sure somewhere in the world this is allowed, so if it is deemed necessary for her happiness then it could be safely done.
    I guess we're all shocked because we all view sight as a gift in this world, one of which many people take for granted.
    I'm not condoning or agreeing with what this women has done but I guess sight was a burden for her that she needed to released from in order to be free and live her life the way she was destined to (in her mind that is).

    • @bookhousegirl

      Hellomylovelies I think the difference is that a trans person, whilst the operations etc are painful, are not in the long term damaging their body. The BIID seems to be solely about damage, and doing something to your body to create a disability, and that's what is so hard to comprehend! I can see the similarities, but whilst I can understand what it must be like to be transgender, I cannot fathom BIID!

    How would they distinguish BIID from Body Dysphoria?

  • @Stokedhavok
    @Stokedhavok 8 лет назад +36

    I believe in the existence and validity of BIID after watching a very thorough documentary on the subject. Apparently they did very advanced brain scans of the sufferers of BIID, and they showed that whatever body part felt alien to the person, would not show as "registered" very clearly in their brain scans. In other words, all their other body parts would show up as accurately recognized and "accepted" by their brains, but not the conflicting body part. For a person not suffering from BIID, it would be like having a giant horn growing out of your head that wasn't supposed to be there. Anyone would want the horn removed. That's basically how it is for a person with BIID. Their body is telling them they have a part that should not be there, so they want it removed. It was a fascinating documentary, but it was also very strange and somewhat frightening.
    With that said, I don't understand why this woman couldn't have simply worn black, opaque contacts that would essentially "blind" her without actually blinding her. I'm sure such a thing exists. That way, should a successful treatment or cure come about for BIID, she could simply stop wearing the contacts. At this point, her vision is destroyed and not salvageable.

    • @epiquewenqa
      @epiquewenqa 7 лет назад +9

      I think the reason why she wouldn't want to just cover her eyes up, was because it wouldn't be enough. Just as you said, if we had a horn on our forehead, we would want it removed IMMEDIATELY. we wouldn't want to cover it up with a hat, or a wig, we would want it gone! Because it's foreign to us, it annoys us, frustrates us, makes us sad, angry. So I'm pretty sure she felt the same sort about her eyes.

    • @availanila
      @availanila 4 года назад

      Why large horn on your forehead. What about extra limbs like arms and fingers you don't want

    • @greenale90
      @greenale90 4 года назад +2

      I think that's not a good example. Having something "extra" is seen as bad mostly for aesthetical reasons or when this compromises your normal life. Now, imagine you have something extra that also gives you an extra ability, like wings, you would feel different but happy to be able to fly. So for the eyes, she might feel her sight as something extra, but she cannot deny it's also useful for a comfortable living. That being said, if the problem is not psychologic (and I'm nobody to affirm that), there's should be something else for sure to explain in what way they feel their body parts as not part of the whole.
      I know it's a stupid example but hopefully it's easy to understand.
      A horn (like you said) would be cumbersome, awkward, unnecessary etc. while sight is clearly not, it has no negative impact on your life in any way.

    • @SAMMIsLIFE
      @SAMMIsLIFE 3 года назад +1

      Well if u did have a horn growing from ur forehead, u wouldnt just wanna cover it up would u? You'd want it GONE, just as she wanted her eyesight gone. She did it to her own body, it doesnt effect anyone else, so i say let people do what they want to their own bodies.

      Jenya March I think that's the overall point they're trying to make. This woman maybe is alike to transgendered individuals in a way that she experiences dysphoria regarding an aspect of her physical body. However, transgendered individuals usually (hopefully) have the means to professionally and safely go about medical reassignment or what have you. This woman unfortunately was not afforded the professional help she needed and ended up with someone who took advantage of her mental state and acted completely irresponsibly.

    Since self-perception began to be discussed, I have had the same opinion: "Nobody encourages an anorexic person to vomit, so why are we going to encourage a person to change their gender with irreversible surgery?" And this has nothing to do with his sexual orientation. Later, cases appeared of men who were convicted and who perceived themselves as women to go to a women's prison, and where they raped women. Or a man over 50 in Canada who sees himself as an 8-year-old girl. Now we see this case of a woman who injured herself on purpose to go blind. Millions of blind people in the world, whether from birth or accidents or some disease, would give anything to see again. I think we need to go back to the roots of science where there are 2 genders and self-perception of something that a person is clearly not, should be treated as a disorder. This disorder may be to get more attention or something deeper, but it should be treated by specialists and not encouraged by "progressive" groups.

    I don't blame the psychologist, she drove herself to him and pursued it, he just did what she wanted and you can say that's wrong but psychologist give out drugs every second to patients that can kill them but it's what the patient wants, we don't stop the pharmacies, it's her own damn fault

    When I see my eye doctor every year, I'm petrified when the doctor and the technicians open my eyes for me, and put eye drops into my eyes. For Chloe here, I just can't comprehend this disorder.

    Guys it is rare disorder called BIID. It really exist. It is basically your brain skipped registering your eyes or arms or legs before you are born and your brain tells you it is not your eyes or arms or legs. It bothers so much and i have seen it where this girl cut one of her legs off because it felt so heavy-like she feels like she can't walk even though her legs are completely healthy. It is really sad but who are we to judge🙃

    I'm wholeheartedly with the female doctor. Usually people with a disorder(my opinion) don't want to have a disability or want something wrong with them. I watched the parts given, someone please show me where she tried to get help before actually taking her own sight. You deliberately did this to yourself, so please don't look for taxpayers to deliberately take care of you. My thoughts and opinions.

    Better not be in the next DSM. That would open the door for justifiable self harm when the behavior is self harm and they are 5150 at that point and should be hospitalized until mentally stable. Period!

    • @caitlyncrull953
      @caitlyncrull953 6 лет назад

      But the DSM is a catalogue of mental disorders and most, if not all, are deemed not normal by social standards. Including this in the DSM could open the door for a better understanding of the disease and lead to better treatment options and the prevention of self harm.

    Why can't they make an opaque Lens, an intraoculaire lens (IOL). It would leave the 'body identity disorder' patient with what they want, left without sight. At the same time not damaging the eye and compromising the doctors oath. If the patient changes their mind, the lens can be removed.
