My first concert, May 1973 Boston Garden changed my life, I was 14. never stopped going to concerts. Something special happened there that helped to escape the madness of home, the neighborhood, heroin, coke, pills, violence. The music community, the passion, it was and is electric. SO many gone. today sober and grateful
I was there, just home from college in Miami and my good friend, June, bought us tix to MSG to see these wonderful guys.! This was on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert Show too. I can't believe this! I was 18 and now I'm 60...OMG!!!!! But still into Grand Funk!
Late reaction to your comment. What you say shows your love for this great band. I too grew up with "heartbreaker"etc. I was 15 years back than, and GFR will always be a part of the happy times of my life, growing up with great music and having so much fun. Looking back, it seems these great bands were a part of me always. I still listen to Ten Years After, The Who, Jimmi H, Led Zep, etc. as well as a lot of great new music that is created these days. As long there is music there is hope. thanx!
I saw GFR in Tucson on 12/2/1972. A couple weeks before this video was filmed. Mark even had the same red pants and same guitar. I was in 9th grade. They were so great! Freddie King backed up. He was great too.
GFR was one of my favs of the 70's and there was lots of good bands then. I liked the fact you could really hear their bass as too. They sound like a much larger band.
Caught In The Act & Live Album from '70 are considered today to be 2 of the greatest live albums of all time. GFRxR was the greatest live band ever, period!
got it!. Madison S, Garden. i still remember the very first time i saw them on stage. i was just 16. and almost cry, great elation. that was my first rock concert. unforgatteble
Sitting here in the middle of the night, listening to GFR, as I did back in the 70's. They still sound so good. Raw and real. God bless Mark, Don and Mel and all GFR fans.
They were a great band in the day (very under rated by music critics). They were an AWESOME live act. Very few live acts wanted to follow Grand Funk Railroad.
I saw Grand Funk Railroad one month before this show in the Hollywood Sportatorium in South Florida. Same exact show. These guys were unbelievable showmen. PS: No need to try and adjust the video, as car as my memory goes this is what 1972 looked like inside a concert venue. Everybody smoked and they weren't even air-conditioned sometimes so the smoke just hung in the air.
I have loved this band for 40 years! In 1970 I was invited to one of their concerts, but my parents thought that I was too young to go - I was 13. How I begged them to attend! Not seeing them live is something I still regret. Thanks for posting and allowing me to enjoy my favorite Grand Funk song again.
I’m deaf in my left ear or close to it from having it loud back then and drumming too I was a 16 year old and who cared worry about it later mom is 94 and still remembers flicking the celler light to get my attention
These videos are TREASURE I've always loved Grand Funk ever since I was a little girl even though I'm not from that generation I can appreciatte the great bands of back then.
This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.
MEL SCHACHER,the most underated bassist ever,he will always be one of my favorites, even if they fall wayyyyyyyyyyy short of the real GRAND FUNK NOW DAYS...MARK,DON & MEL LIVES ON!
@PackedFunk Remember well when these guys first hit the scene. They were so cutting edge then and loved to listen the local bands try to emulate them. Great stuff!
The thing that I admire most about Mark is his guitar playing. He is the most under rated guitarist. Just look at his guitars...he doesn't need expensive ones to bring out the best in him...cheers..and long live GFR
Every time Mark sings a sentence (with his incredible voice) his guitar sings right back to him in perfect timing and pitch! Does anyone understand what I'm trying to say? >"now I don't cry no more" (his guitar sings back) "I live while I'm flying (his guitars sings back) "but I think back" (guitar sings back) "and you can hear me say"...wow I love that part!
My very first concert was Grand Funk Railroad. I saw them in 1972. The tickets were priced at $2.50, $3.50,$4.50. Very good show. The air smelled quite a bit different than it does at concerts nowadays. Thanks for posting this video, KICK ASS TUNE!
this is one of the real true rock groups of all times...as a black kid out of high school.. i joined the U S MARIENS IN 1975.... my first time was with my partner nad dear friend that bought GFR into my life and i never turned back...LEZ, BTO,KISS,MARSHALL TUCKER BAND, THE STONES,BOSTON,CCR,THE WHO... ALL I MISS SO MUCH... THAT MUSIC LIVES ON.. EVERY TIME I LISTEN TO IT.. IT STILL GET ME HYPE ....
The Greatest Band ever, especially Live! Should have been in the Rock & RollHallofFame years ago, noone! out rocked these guys, they were the Best! Period!
I'm a big fan of Mel's bass playing. And Mark's singing. And the band in general. Met Mel in San Diego when they played Humphreys less than 10 yrs ago. I gave him a massage at a nail salon near there. We talked music, I got a pic, and he gave me a ticket to the concert!
Pure Rock. I'm 47 years old and i'm still listening to them as always. Today's Rock is not like the good old days, but i like to live in the era 60's & 70's, 80's, coz it's much better than today. Only Heaven & Hell a year before, Deeppurple and some others are still rockin'.
Man, were these guys FANTASTIC! Saw them 4 times. as always, putting on a great show for the audience. HA, hard to believe that was 40+ years ago! Still luv their music!
I saw them at MSG on 12/18/70 and those 3 boyos (it was before they added Craig Frost) rocked the place to it's foundations! Great show! The next Summer they sold out Shea Stadium and 2 years after that they couldn't get arrested. I could never figure that out. Great and powerful band!
I love this band. This my first video I saw back then that made me fall in love with rock the blues DUDES WITH LONG HAIR. I WAS ABOUT 10. LOOG LIVE ROCK N ROLL GOOD OL' DAYS
They definitely know how to rock! It is extremely hard to believe that they have not been inducted in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. This classic music will never die.....
I thank you too for posting these clips. Are there more??? I saw them on this tour in Portland Oregon about 3 months before this was shot. My first exposure to live GFRR. I was already a huge fan and was playing guitar in a band that could re-create practically the entire first live LP ! So to see this after so many years is really fantastic. Wasn't this the footage that was used on "IN CONCERT"??? I wonder where the pristine original footage is...love to see the whole show.
I hear ya....Ive always loved this Band since I was a Kid. Im 50 now, But I too Always feel like I belong to a small club that enjoys this Band...Good to see other Fans with much appreciation
Awesome video, it brings back so many memories, one of the songs any good guitarist from the garage bands of the day could play flawlessly (Larry) thans so much for the post.
As an artist and creator that saw all levels of the playing field, Mark Farner's musical diversity is a matter of public record. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" as one of the top ten classic songs of all time. Way to go Mark!!! Further proof this great American Band can not be ignored any longer!!!
"I dont cry no more, I live while Im flying, But I'll think back, and you can hear me say: HEARTBREAKER!!!!" Mark Farner wrote the words for our generation.

It was a far cry from the Beatles, Bubble Gum and British Invasion Music I'd been listening to on Top 40 radio. Then along came WPLR FM and I heard this ballad. I love the music, I love Mark's hair and lack of a shirt. I like the entire package. Wish we could go back in time.
This is the exact version I remember listening to in 1972. Still amazing!
This is one of my faves. Farner is excellent on this! Everyone is really into what they're doing. I don't tire of the music. Very engaging!
GFR was one of my favs of the 70's and there was lots of good bands then. I liked the fact you could really hear their bass as too. They sound like a much larger band.

They were a great band in the day (very under rated by music critics). They were an AWESOME live act. Very few live acts wanted to follow Grand Funk Railroad.

Grand Funk is the way to jam! great concert - we have their CD and have to hear their music all the time! they should've been in R&R Hall of Fame!
Saw them in concert, such a good time and space. Don't we all often wish we could go back 40 years.

Saw em in Louisville, Ky in 1972. Even though sound for live concerts at that time wasn't great, their showmanship shined through. one of my favorites - thanks for upload!
In 1969 When I was 11, my neighbor Ritchie Jason had introduced me to Black Sabbath when his older brother Butch would give us a ride to eighth grade at fair haven Middle School in New Haven CT in his Pontiac Firebird Espirit and the Soul sucking sounds of the Ballad type derges from his quad speaker 8 track player had me hooked.
