Lady bass player here. Picked up bass in my 40s and learned playing along to RUclips. You were one of the 1st channels I subscribed to. Everything you played seemed impossible. When I tried to play along, I cried, tbh. Pretty sure the Fender cried too. But now some songs are...less impossible. Thanks for being a teacher from afar. You influence more people than you know 😀 💜 😀
El Cerrito, CA's native son, John Fogerty...funny story - I worked at The North Face in the late 80's. I often chatted with the old timers that were there when the company moved from San Francisco to Berkeley. It was mentioned that at the original factory on 5th Street in Berkeley, they used to hear music coming from a next-door warehouse late in the evenings - a couple months later, those same songs would pop up on the radio. It turns out CCR used that warehouse to jam in before recording the songs we all know and love. Fast forward to the 90s, just two blocks away at the 924 Gilman, an unknown band named Green Day garnered quite the following playing a lot of their hits to the punk kids.
Some things that can make “easy” songs difficult to play is tone and feeling. So many players don’t have the feeling and so those “easy” songs don’t sound great. Your What Is and What Should Never Be video is one of many that proves you know about feeling.
Great video. At 57 last year I dusted off my Aria Pro II fretless I bought in 1982, bought myself a new Fender Jazz and refurbed my 30 year old Yamaha TRB 5 . I now play every day and it’s guys like you Troy who take the time to make these videos that inspire me to learn new songs every week. From Grease to Duran Duran it’s a privilege to learn all these styles of playing. Thanks for the fun. 👍🏴

Another beautiful cover my friend! Such a great song, and I never knew it had such an interesting bass line! Around the 7:08 mark, sounds like a train is passing right through the room you’re sitting in haha!
Great job Troy, as always, i can't add to what's been said about your playing proficiency, bass tone, or musical taste. I am always fascinated by your humility, outgoing personality, and kidness towards fellow musicians and your fans. This reflects how genuine and awesome person you are, lots of respect.
Wise words! For me, the “easiest” songs are always the hard ones. I see this with a lot of my friends too. We all underestimates the song thinking that we are nailing it, but we always do some silly mistake playing along with it. The hardest ones we study so much, going really deep into the song, that we mostly always plays it better overall with the right dynamics and feel than the easy ones that we just sent it. Anyways… you are sounding amazing Troy as always!

I'm really happy with the Tone-Styler and am playing around with a lot of sounds that I'd never have considered before. Thanks, I'm still really happy with the bass.
Man, I knew this was going to be a tough listen even before I clicked the link. I kind of ruined this song for myself last year when me and a friend recorded a version of it for my dads' funeral - funny how something as innocent as that little root, 4th-to-5th lick so quickly got associated with sadness and loss in my head after just maybe a week of recording and mixing the song. Anyway, you played it beautifully, and I enjoyed it despite the tears. Thank you. Oh, and beautiful looking bass btw, it sounds amazing!
I'm terrible sorry for the loss of your Father, Eric. May his memory always be a blessing to you. Thanks for braving the video and taking the time to share some of your story and your kind words. Take care!
Words of wisdom, I totally agree. I've always done pretty much the same and it's a good feeling as the list of 'easy' songs gets bigger and bigger over the years. Another thing I've learned is to be open to playing styles of music I might not normally listen to. Back in the 80s & 90s I was playing in rock bands and my brother had a country band. He was always trying to get me to sit in for a few songs but I just wasn't interested. 'Too boring', I thought. Eventually, I gave in and he gave me a list of songs to learn. I was really surprised at how hard it was to learn to play country music right. The perfection and subtlety the songs needed were challenging to say the least. The challenge got me interested in the music and helped advance my playing. I'm still a rocker at heart but if I had to name just one bass line as my favorite to play it would be Working Man Blues by Merle Haggard. It's also my go-to, easy song to relax with after working on really difficult stuff.
Thanks Steve. Yeah, I'm with you on playing material you'd never had touched earlier in life. I'm still finding interesting bass-lines all over the place.
It would be cool to see you playing a uke bass the great rock classics. As far I understand, uke bass is plentiful of sound. I enjoy your videos and is fantastic to see how the main structure of the song are performed.
Have you heard of the song What Once Was by Her's? Audun Laading plays a Rickenbaker, which I wouldn't have guessed by the tone. Excellent job on this song too.
Thanks so much, though, I have to say, I don't go out of my way to tailor my sound to any particular song. Sometimes, I just get lucky. Thanks again and take care.
@@TJH3113 Hi, I'm using this message exchange to ask you a favor. You are my favourite cover bass player, and I wonder if you would like to try a cover song that I can't find anywhere on RUclips. It's a song that is not in your usual repertoire as it is the opening track of the Miles Davis album "the mas with the horn" and is called "fat time". The bass part is played by Marcus Miller, and it's just titanic. I think you're the only one on RUclips who can do a cover of it, even if it's out of your usual musical context. What do you think of it? I hope I am not abusing your kindness by making this request. Please accept my best and respectful regards. I should point out that I am just an amateur musician, a drummer in this case.
Your insight in the beginning is just what I needed to hear. As a long time watcher and listener I thank you for the little talks and just the inspiring playing you do. Great video Troy! Whatever gets the bass in your hands is something we all can agree on.
You are so right,. Sometimes I amaze my self when I hear a song I play on the radio, it’s like wow I actually play this,.. I think playing note for note sounds the best , like you do , but sometimes I have to improvise cause I just can’t get it 😆 ,.. I love CCR ❤️ and your the best,..
Yes, it's a great feeling, isn't it? And, by all means, if you can't figure something out or are unable to play exactly what you are hearing - make something up that sounds as close as you can get. I did that many times when I was younger and actually came up with some interesting stuff that I still play today. Take care!
This is one of my favorite songs, I've always loved it. In terms of inspiration, I wouldn't say that you inspire me to pick up the bass again, since I still don't have time and feel less-than-great at playing it, but you do inspire me to never give it up, no matter how displeased I may be with it. You also inspire me to play fingers, since I play exclusively with a pick. And man, looking at that bass again, it sure is beautiful. Seems great to play, too. Awesome that you picked it up.
Thank you for explaining how you pick music to play. It’s funny because I’ve always wanted to ask you how you do this and you explained it, so thank you. Troy.
H Troy, long time no comments although I still watch a lot of your clips and you remain an inspiration and one who converted me to the 4 strings. Have just learned this song recently and just had a ball playing along with you! (I do play it lower on the fret board however).
Thank you very much! I (no real beginner but not that very advanced either) play this song with my band and it works how I did it so far. Your video showed me some more details, I will practice this and that wil make my bass part better. Cheers from the Netherlands.
Thank you for another wonderful video. I'm sure you get hundreds of requests a week but...one of my favorite bass songs is Jethro Tull Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day. To me, It's like a musical horse race. It comes out of the gate smooth and slow. From there it starts to gain momentum and pace. and finally when Jeffery Hammond comes in it's like them coming down the home stretch. I just think the studio production of that song is phenomenal. So if you're ever at a loss as to what song you should do a video on, I hope you will consider this one.
It was my pleasure. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I worked a bit on "Skating Away...", but didn't follow through on it because the bass has such a short life in the song. Perhaps I will revisit it. Take care.
Dear Author, thanks a lot for your bass cover but more important I really appreciate your introduction words which gives me a lot of inspiration. I'm not English speaking guy but I understand your message " learning by doing". I mostly play rythm guitar but I'm really interested in bass guitar technics. And I really appreciate your skills and what you do for people who want to play music. Thanks a lot and best regards, Volodymyr
Troy you have another bass??? That one is awesome. I'm commenting on my phone and watching you on my laptop, but I wanted to tell you that you are a true inspiration! I just wish I had your technique.
Good tune never played along to it but @3:55 that's great advice TJ..I been playin since the early 80's, did the bands/touring/dive bars thing....I'm 59 now and do basically as you and just jam along to stuff i know or don't know. That satisfaction comes thru the correcting of mistakes as well as the end result when you've "nailed it". Then realize how easy it was but I always learn a little something from your channel, from different fingering/tone/ or "gassing" for some of your basses..ha' That bass sounds great btw with the tone selector switch, very cool.
Hi Troy, long time no talk to lol I love playing this song on my 4001, I play it on the lower frets, it's a bit punchier down there and I think that's where Stu played it, based on the videos I have seen. He played a modified 4001 back in the day. CCR was one of my fav bands in the late 60's/early 70's, such great tunes and that swampy sound - all the way from The City lol
It is such a treat Troy when you are in the mood to chat with your Fans! Personally, I Love when it happens too! It brings out fun side of your personality. Having had my seat in here for some time now, I absolutely know you fend off praise. But The Fans persist in letting you know just what a difference your channel makes to many of us. It really is a Bright Light in a seemingly ever Darkening World. And being centered around The Bass and Music and your delivery, it's pretty much a POINT SET MATCH type ending until you post up again! I was smiling at you expressing how your knees and back were going to SUE you for Dereliction of Duty! LOLOL I appreciate one of your "Go To" songs to play is this Gem by CCR! One of my so called "Go To" plays is "The Fez" from Steely Dan's "The Royal Scam" album....it just lets me stroll on the bass and in the fields of my empty head as I play with my eyes closed! My Fave CCR Tune is "Fortunate Son"...That is a killer Tune AND brings a hellava message from a nightmare of a war during what was suppose to be One Of The Grooviest Times of our Life! As always...Thank You for letting us all come into your kitchen, sit down and share some air together! Cheers From Ohio
Hi Troy - Great advice since I definitely get frustrated ALOT. I also practice arpeggios and scales to break things up. However, once I learn a song it seems to disappear from memory after a few weeks so maybe this would be something to keep practicing and enjoy more than arpeggios. Great song and glad you posted a video. Was getting worried after 13 days without a new video.
Great point about the scales. I used to throw those in there as punishment, but they were definitely beneficial. If I don't play a song for a while (especially a challenging song) it takes a bit for me to reclaim it, but it always takes much, much less time than when I'd originally learned it. I think that is just natural. Thank Paul, I'm glad you liked it.
I love the way that bass sounds in this song! I learned 3 CCR songs, two of which are very simple: Bad Moon Rising and Down on the Corner. The third is Lodi, which is a bit tricker for me and also has a key change. Troy, I have to admit your written remark about there being no May 8th in 2022 has me scratching my head - I'm pretty sure there's a May 8th every year? 😅
Thanks. I'm not sure if I know Lodi. I've probably heard it and just don't know the name. I corrected my text. What I should have said was that there was no "Wednesday, May 8th in 2022".
@@TJH3113 I was drawn to how dominant the bassline was in the song and just how good it sounded (it's a fat bass tone), and because it was a technically simple bass part, I picked it up fast when I got my first bass guitar. It teached me many bas(s)ics about bass playing like locking in with the kick drum and the major scale, while also introducing me to the hammer-on technique.
hey bro been watching you for ages and just wanted to thank you, a lot of your covers have helped me learn a lot of songs. Thanks, Lachlan... great to hear from you. No, I do not listen to much Country music at all. Closest I get is some Southern Rock via my wife. We did just see Blackberry Smoke the other night. I'll check out the song you mentioned... you never know. Edit: I didn't see Big Country in your comment... haha.

Hi Greg. I am self-taught and play by ear and memory. I have a couple of tutorials on YYZ in my tutorial playlist. They are nothing great, but may be of some help to you. Take care.
I learned so much from your videos. It has helped me become a better guitarist. No offense, but every bass player I've played with sucked. They only play root notes. The bass, played correctly is an amazingly musical instrument!

Some things that can make “easy” songs difficult to play is tone and feeling. So many players don’t have the feeling and so those “easy” songs don’t sound great. Your What Is and What Should Never Be video is one of many that proves you know about feeling.
Good point and thanks for the kind words. I wouldn't say that I play with much "feeling", but I am able to mimic it when I hear it, sometimes.

H Troy, long time no comments although I still watch a lot of your clips and you remain an inspiration and one who converted me to the 4 strings. Have just learned this song recently and just had a ball playing along with you! (I do play it lower on the fret board however).
Welcome back Shaun! It’s good to hear from you! Wherever it works best for you is where you should play it.
@TJH3113 Thanks Troy, good to see you active too mate. And you never fail to reply to my comments you good man.
Thank you very much! I (no real beginner but not that very advanced either) play this song with my band and it works how I did it so far. Your video showed me some more details, I will practice this and that wil make my bass part better. Cheers from the Netherlands.
It was my pleasure... sort of. Thanks Ron and take care!
I really enjoyed the preamble.
It is interesting for those of us who have been following you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You're awesome man
Thanks Ruby. That was awfully nice of you to say.
Well spoken. Well played. Thank you.
Thank you very much, Art.
Nice love that song the bass was perfect great job like always
Thank you Joseph.
Super song u seem to be enjoying playing that song Stephen
I guess I did enjoy playing this one. Thanks Stephen!
Take care.
Brilliant, as usual. You have certainly inspired me over the years to up my game…
Thanks so much, Tia.
Thanks for the advice Troy.
Also, a great cover and that's some bass you've got there.
It was my pleasure, Ray. Take care!
Nice job!! 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽 Love it.
Thank you, Charles!!
Classic song...great job!! 💯
Thanks Steve!
You're very welcome! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a wonderful comment. Take care!
Troy you have another bass??? That one is awesome. I'm commenting on my phone and watching you on my laptop, but I wanted to tell you that you are a true inspiration! I just wish I had your technique.
Yes, I had this one built for me and took possession of it a few months ago. I’m very happy with it. Thanks for the kind words and take care!
Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment. Take care!
So smooth,.. love to hear and watch you play,.. so talented
Thanks Cindy
Cool Bass! Is it new? i really like it. You look great Troy!. I really like it troy! Brilliant my friend!!!!!!!!
It's my newest bass, but I've had it a few months now. Thanks Marvine. I hope you are feeling better.
Yep thank you
It was my pleasure, Sean.
Good song🎶🎶
It is, isn't it?
+1 on the inspiration!
Thanks!
Wow
Great!!!
Thanks Gustavo!
Well done as always my good man.
Thank you very much David.
You have inspired so many ❤️ thank you 🌹
Thank you so much, Cindy!
😊
Glad they used this toon on the last ever episode of Stargate SG 1.
I did not know that… Very cool.
Hi John! I played it in this position because I was looking for a “rounder” sound.
@@TJH3113 Yes, I do the same on some songs to get that tone. When I play "White Rabbit" I play it up there, I think Jack played it in first position.
Thanks, once again for your far too kind words. I really do appreciate them.
Boy does that bass sound awesome!!!!! Great rendition as usual
I'm glad you like it. Thanks Jack!
Love it! Thanks for the CCR classic Troy.
Thanks Mike. Any time!
Thanks Troy!
Any time, Mike!
Great suggestions, pretty much what I do when I practice and have surprised myself when I get some of those harder songs down!
Thanks. I'm still surprised every time a song comes together.
I just wanna say, I like wholesome songs like this a lot. Also, syd barrett songs for the same reasons.
Cool... I'm glad you liked it.
What a great cover I hope you feel better also have a great weekend
Thank you, Amin.
Stu Cook is great...As you 👍
Absolutely... thanks!
Nice Troy.
Thank you.
@@TJH3113 Haha thanks for clearing that up! And you'd definitely know Lodi if you heard it. Tons of radio play to this very day!
You got someone playing bass, with just one hand??!!!
Impressive!!!
I had to think about that one. Very clever.
This was the song that inspired me to pick up the bass.
Awesome!!!
That’s an interesting bass too
Thanks!
Awesome
Fretted as opposed to slidden fifths?
Your opinion will be interesting 😃
Thanks
I'm not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate a bit for me?
I'd love to see you do Reptilia by The Strokes, solid bass riffs
I'll check it out.
PS bought a Bruce Thomas bass I love it
Congratulations! Tell me about it... Salmon or Sunburst, high-mass bridge or threaded barrel, strings???
🤘🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much Ricardo!
12:12 That made my day, thanks
Haha...
hey bro been watching you for ages and just wanted to thank you, a lot of your covers have helped me learn a lot of songs. I was wondering, are you a fan of big country? and if so would you be interested in working out the bass for Close Action? its probably one of my favourite songs and would be amazing to hear you cover it. also love the masks haha been trying to look out for any new additions...
Thanks, Lachlan... great to hear from you. No, I do not listen to much Country music at all. Closest I get is some Southern Rock via my wife. We did just see Blackberry Smoke the other night. I'll check out the song you mentioned... you never know.
Edit: I didn't see Big Country in your comment... haha.
@@TJH3113 thanks for the reply Troy, not gonna lie, I got quite excited when you replied as I've been a big fan for ages...just looked up Blackberry Smoke and they're amazing...keep up the amazing work bro and will be keeping an eye out for any new covers.
Do you still have your Guilds and have you made a video on them?
Second that. Let’s see the Guilds!!
Yes, I still have all the Guilds. The next video is the Ibanez basses and then the Guilds. The Ibanez video is done and I will try to do the Guild video this week since I have a few days off between jobs.
@@TJH3113 Thanks again for the great work! 🤘🏻
Did you have any formal training or do you play by ear?
You are really nailing the Rush tunes.
I have been working on YYZ on and off for years but I just can’t seem to get anywhere on it
Hi Greg. I am self-taught and play by ear and memory. I have a couple of tutorials on YYZ in my tutorial playlist. They are nothing great, but may be of some help to you. Take care.
🙂♥️👍
Thanks!
Play some Thin Lizzy and Gary Moore please....Lots of love from Manipur, North east India
I'll give it some thought. Thanks!
The sound of the train in the back ground
You get used to it.
I know Troy , I just wanted to send her some love. Marvine ;-)
That's very sweet of you, Marvine. I'm sure she'd love to get a note from you. You just might need to introduce yourself to her.
OK. What is her first name? I'll send her a note. Thanks Troy. Please introduce me to her. Thanks. Marvine :-)
Troy, do you play professionally ?
No, I play for my own enjoyment and, sometimes, yours.
Happy to watch this video because our bassist was playing only the basic notes..
Awesome!
Not sure if Stu Cook was a "great" bass player , but for CCR songs , he was perfect.
Agreed!
I learned so much from your videos. It has helped me become a better guitarist. No offense, but every bass player I've played with sucked. They only play root notes. The bass, played correctly is an amazingly musical instrument!
That's great to hear and thanks! Sorry for the crappy bass players.
Hi Troy. I'm dissappointed because I can;t find a way to send your mother a house plant. It is too costly from here, I am feeling better thanks to you. Marvine :-)
That’s OK Marvine, don’t worry yourself about it. Mom actually has more plants than she knows what to do with😂
You're the reason I don't paint balusters.
Lucky you!
ola aqui te comparto el link de otro video .... gracias saludos ruclips.net/video/O-31wc4PN2A/видео.html
