Gary W Tallent is a poster child for under appreciated bass players everywhere - even among bass players. Tremendous player who came up with tremendous parts, this being one of his best. Thank you, Troy, for what I can only describe as a brutally faithful rendition.
Absolutely correct! I played two gigs with a Springsteen cover band and learned a lot of his bass parts. Virtually none were simple -- all had lots of thought put into creating them.
He is one of the nicest people you want to meet. Unpretentious is an understatement. My experience was he just sat and talked to anyone. He a big autograph collector.
“Oh Wendy let me in I want to guard your dreams and visions.” Means a lot to me. Really nice Troy. Seems there aren’t many Bruce fans on this channel. That’s too bad. But thanks from the bottom of my heart for playing that one.
They were hitting their stride when they made this album. I was a fortunate teenager. I saw this tour and was blown away by it. They played for more than three hours. I didn’t think they were ever going to stop. All this for like a six dollar general admission ticket. Just another Beaver Productions event. Thanks for the upload. Enjoyed it thoroughly.
I'm not 100% sure of the part you mean. Is it over that crazy bass drum pattern, before the ascending, chromatic line? If so, I'm doing more than is actually there. I'm following along a bit more closely with the drums than the bass actually is on the isolated recording. Sometimes my ears fill in the blanks and I wish I'd listened to the isolated track before I recorded my video. Thanks!
I became a RUSH Disciple starting in April of 1975! Cut Biology Class to go hear an album a buddy of mine said was far more important than my education and that was all I needed to hear! "Fly By Night" changed EVERYTHING for this knucklehead and pointed me on a musical path that I still walk today! I of course loved MANY other artists and Bands too...but RUSH became Family to me. I did buy and really enjoy the Born To Run Album. Bruce's music after this album I did not really follow but in the 90's Bruce's album "Tunnel Of Love" became a staple in my music play loops. And the song "Secret Garden" is a keeper in my collection. Being a huge Steely Dan, David Bowie, "Early Elton John" (from 1970 to around 1975) and a ton more, it's so easy to forget just how many great tunes from these Artists and Bands were such an influence on my musical journey! On a side note, I did have to do a Detention and get three Whacks from my Football Coach after I cut Biology to hear "Dirk, Lerxst and the Professor"...but was well worth it! LOLOL Like you Troy, there were "Some Acts" that annoyed me so naturally I refused to listen to anything they did. Years later I found how idiotic that thinking was after hearing some tunes from those very "Acts" and thinking...."Chit, this is pretty damn good" Live and learn like everyone...LOLOL Have a Safe 4th with your Bride Miss Lynn and as always I absolutely DIG IT when you make time to chat with The Fans after you Deliver The Goods Musically! My introduction to Rush was the "All the World's a Stage" album. My friend got it by mistake from a record club thinking he was ordering a Mahogany Rush album. I spent many days at home learning those songs while cutting school. The reason I had to repeat the 9th grade wasn't because my grades were bad, it was because I had not attended the minimum number of days at school that was required by law. I think I'd missed 85 days. I really hated school.
Omg you can talk?! Seriously though, your videos are invaluable for ANY bass player in a cover band-myself included-and are VERY much appreciated! Thank you
As a lifelong fan of Springsteen, I admit I never listened to it because of the bass. It seems buried in the mix. You brought it out front and center and it's amazing. Great job once again Troy.
Im Brazilian and Springsteen was never a huge thing here, since only 2 songs became massive hits here. Born in the USA ( cultural colonization of the Reagan era at its best) and Streets of Philadelphia. But somehow I came across this amazing song during a very depressive time in my life and it became a battle himn for me. A song that unfortunately takes a quality kind of band I never had, to be performed. You sir, are a master.
I was invited to a jam session tonight and this was on the list. I feel the same way about Springsteen - incredible talent but I wouldn't go out of my way to play his songs. Anyway, I came here to see if you had any cool spin on it and of course, you didn't disappoint. Thanks Troy - YOU ROCK!!!
I've never liked been a fan of his music except for this song for some reason. Plus you hallway have a way of making things sound better lol. Thanks for that 😄😊😉
I didn't think that I was overly stoked about Springsteen either, until I saw his live show. Phenomenal! Money's worth one song in kind of good. Yet another excellent cover Troy, please keep 'em comin'
I was the 50th like on this video. I’m listening and thinking “dang, that’s good stuff!” A stellar performance here, did not disappoint. I can’t wait to try it!
This song was an American classic the day it was released. 😁 Nowadays, it’s ICONIC. (Sort of like American Girl by Tom Petty.) Springsteen/E street albums are great, but the live shows are the absolute best I’ve been to. (And I’m a huge Yes/Genesis fan). Gary Tallent is a major favorite bassist of mine, melodically underpinning a BIG band with 3-4 guitars, 2 keyboardists, sax player, etc. Thanks for posting this great rendition, Love it!
Thanks Patrick. Generally speaking, I have to find a bass-line interesting in order to cover it and, since I've become a bit less restrictive as to what I'll listen to these days, I'm coming up with some different stuff that I never thought I'd be playing.
Troy, you and I seem to be cut from the same cloth as far as our taste in music goes and how we have evolved. I too was and am a huge Rush fan (as well as UFO, Aerosmith, etc) and a lot of that had to do with not liking what everyone else was listening to. I joined a cover band twenty years ago and developed an appreciation for a lot of songs I never would have seen myself playing in my youth, Born To Run included. I love your rendition of the song and will be copying some of your parts just like I did with Closer To The Heart, which I never could have learned without your video! Thanks again for all you do, you are helping bass players the world over to improve their playing through learning songs that they never would have been able to otherwise! I'd love to see videos of your grooves on some other bass heavy songs that I never would have liked in my formative years: Midnight Train to Georgia, Silly Love Songs, and of course anything UFO! Stay well, all the best!
It's funny how the boss never really got away from this theme. But then again who cares it is a great theme. Thanks for continuing all these years later, been subbed since 2010
I'm a huge Springsteen fan, thanks Troy!! Great job and I always felt Gary has some great, but under appreciated bass lines. You were all over the fretboard on this one!
Being a Springsteen fan is an expensive hobby, these days, with the price of concert tickets. Thanks for watching, and taking the time to comment, Mike!
Wonderful looking and sounding bass! Well played! Love the change in atmosphere and funky syncopations from around 2:00' to 2:39' as well as the triplets at 3:52'!
Troy, it is thrilling watching your fingers move ever so gently on the keyboard and the amazing sounds that you produce, Thanks so much Troy,, love you!!!!!!!!
Great rendition of Born To Run, Troy. Definitely no click tracks involved in the original recording - it does change tempo fairly drastically in places and bobs around in others. My favourite Springsteen album is Tunnel of Love which was recorded with drum machines. I'll get slaughtered for saying that!.
i wish you'd play more bruce springsteen, since he is one of my favourite musicians. but i respect that you don't like him, so it means a lot to me that you made this video. amazing, as always. thank you.
Funny. I played this with multiple cover bands and always got a look when I'd hit the mini walkdown to the E. Good to know I've been playing it right 🤣. As always, great video Troy and that bass sounds amazing.
I'm sure I'm in the minority but its all ruined for me when Clarence pipes in. I have an appreciation for (most) all things music but Bruce wasn't my thing. I do love that bass and I am glad to have had the opportunity to see another of your vids. Happy 4th everyone!
Great job! Never noticed how involved this line was, you nailed it. And the tone you have is amazing. Not the biggest Springsteen fan but I've always liked their bassist and a handful of songs, especially stuff off the Magic album. He has some unique lines. Really like what he did under the sax solo especially. Been trying to get Girls in their Summer Clothes off the Magic albu. under my fingers for awhile and there's some odd stuff going on at times. Cool stuff!
I'll admit to being a fan of The Boss. Never thought this bass line would be so busy though. And the mandatory long time listener of the channel, and several other bass cover channels too. Been listening to a lot of Japanese all-female rock like Band-Maid recently (read as: 2 years or so) and go crazy for their bassist MISA. Anyway, great job, as usual, Troy!
What a great job..like so many I was never a huge fan but this song reminds me of high school and I did always like this tune…that bass sounds incredible as does your playing… hope your well and have a great weekend…
Great cover and that bass is still sounding fantastic! I'm with you on Bruce. I was in JHS, HS, and college in the 80s and wasn't much of a fan, but I do have an appreciation for him now.
Thanks a lot! Yeah, I was actually thinking about going to see the one man show he was doing on Broadway not too long ago, but tickets were tough to get.
Now that you mention it, I was aware of that. For some reason I thought it was in New City though. I grew up down in Rockland County and must have passed the place a thousand times.
I come from the same town where Springsteen lives now, I lived off rt 34 he lived behind us in Muhlennbrink st Huge farm. Colts Neck NJ. Got to share the stage at the Stone Pony in Asbury with Gary Tallent. Benefit for the 3M workers in Freehold. I don’t think in the beginning of BTR he goes off to the A -B. Hammers the E until the hammer on octave. Nice Troy
Great job Troy, however, I'm not a fan of the Boss, you manged to make like this song. I haven't commented in any of your videos lately, but never missed watching any of them, true fan here.
Great Job. I recall getting kicked out of my high school library for enthusiastically playing along to this on an improvised drum kit while the school radio station played this. We were able to "tune in" on headphones that we got at the front desk and (if memory serves me right) and plugged in at a handful of specially wired tables. I don't know if it was low powered FM (I think it was) or if the tables had been hard wired into one of the schools PA channels. Either way It was pretty high tech. This was in '75. Long before Walkmans. Now please tell us about your featured bass. Is that a custom build? It is a beautiful looking & sounding instrument.
Wow, that library sounds like it was way ahead of its time. The bass was built by the fellow who's been working on my basses for the last 5 years, or so. His name is Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars. I did a video about the bass that's in my "Bass Collection" playlist, if you are interested in hearing more about it. Thanks and take care Egroeg.
Jesus dude, I was about to type something in the order of "I was never a fan of Bruce Springsteen but, like many other types of music, I have a much greater appreciation now than I did when I was younger. I think, when I was younger, that I was actually repelled by the artists/groups many people liked just because they were so popular." GET OUT OF MY HEAD MASK MAN!! Nirvana was one I hated in the day. Love Dave Grohl, but it was my son learning guitar and sharing..... Nirvana is amazing!
I'm not a fan of Springsteen or this song but I enjoy watching you play Troy. I also have always liked your tone - which in this play through is a little nastier than I'm used to hearing from you but I like it.
Thanks for giving it a chance, Jake. I wouldn't consider myself a fan either, but I thought the bass-line was cooler than I'd ever given it credit for being. Actually, my tone is my tone and, for the most part, it doesn't change at all from song to song. Once I get my settings to where I want them I don't touch anything and record whatever song's I'm doing with the same sound. What changes is how the bass sits in with the original recording. It's hit or miss and some songs just work better than others.
i also have much greater appreciation for music that didn't really move me when i was younger....i suppose part of it i gravitate towards anything pre 2000 since i can't find much music that is new too like.......such a great anthem this is......there are quite a few bruces songs from the pre 82 era that have great bass parts
Thanks for the tip! Most of the masks are display copies, so I wouldn't last terribly long them. I have done a couple of covers while wearing a mask. It's not a pleasant experience.
I actually did play the upright for around two years in middle school. I really didn’t think anything translated from upright to electric bass, but I’ve been told, by people who know better, that a couple of good habits did cross over.
Bruce's entire catalogue is considered American classics by us younger generations, and I'm in my 30s haha. I have always thought of him as classic rock. I know Rush is progressive rock, but I still kinda lump them in with classic rock as well to be honest.
Not a Bruce fan but you play everything well, Troy! Check out some new collab vids on my channel with a great guitarist from Serbia. Wolfman, the Serbian Shredder! LOL

Sorry for taking the words out of your mouth. It may be a while before I can stomach Nirvana, but I've learned to never say "never".
@@TJH3113 I get it dude, I do.
Bad a@@ Man! GREAT JOB!
Thanks a lot Charles!
👍👍👍💯‼️‼️
Not a big Springsteen fan either, but this song is a 10/10!
Thanks for giving it a chance!
i also have much greater appreciation for music that didn't really move me when i was younger....i suppose part of it i gravitate towards anything pre 2000 since i can't find much music that is new too like.......such a great anthem this is......there are quite a few bruces songs from the pre 82 era that have great bass parts
I’m sure there must be some decent stuff out there, but there’s enough old stuff to keep me occupied.
I like it.
Glad to hear that!
As other people have said, listen to the Frankie Goes to Hollywood version, bass is great...
I’ve never heard it, I’ll have to check it out
I'm a huge bruce fan
Very cool! He's an icon.
I enjoyed your cover. Show biz suggestion: wear a "song appropriate" mask when you're playing the cover.
Thanks for the tip! Most of the masks are display copies, so I wouldn't last terribly long them. I have done a couple of covers while wearing a mask. It's not a pleasant experience.
Nice cover 👏. Can you do
Tom Petty the waiting 💯
Thanks. I’ll check it out.
Oh hell yeah!!!!
Thanks!
Thanks!
The bassist on RUclips bar none
Thank you Edward.
Seu fa. 👏👏👏👏👏belo bass parabens
Muito obrigado!
Did you play an upright bass at one time? The angle of your plucking hand is reminiscent of upright jazz players.
I should have known that. I consider Ruch more Classic than Progressive myself.
Vintage Boss!
BRUCE!!!
What kind of pickup/ electronics are fitted in ?
The pick up is from an old Guild bass… like the ones I often play in my videos.
Not a Bruce fan but you play everything well, Troy! Check out some new collab vids on my channel with a great guitarist from Serbia. Wolfman, the Serbian Shredder! LOL
Thanks! I'll be sure to check it out. How is your brother doing?
Bass part is great and at the same time I’m still hating Bruce’s voice
Thanks. No judgment here.
Fabulous!
Thanks Richard!
