The fact you didn't want to stop the track says all we need to know. This one goes across all genres for anyone who feels deeply connected to music. Emotion. Pure emotion. Bravo.
Agree. Also, this track came from an interview he was giving about his life, his dad encouraging him to be more than just a song writer, and start to perform. His dad died the following week. Interview is worth a listen. Double Bravo.
Was thinking the same thing. Have watched so many of these vids and for him to not stop it once just lost in the sound and lyrics was cool as hell to watch. It was like a mirror of the first time I listened and had to pick my heart and jaw and f***in soul off the floor.
Yes it is amazing, so is the cover of "Something in the Way". However he has absolutely legendary songs of his own, songs that are actually WAY better songs. He deserves recognition for his own work and then come back to the covers later.
No doubt thousands of others have said it, but the amount of amazing music I’ve been introduced to thanks to this channel is something I can’t thank you enough for.
This is probably one of my favorite songs ever written. It fucks me up in a beautiful way and the memories it digs up are both heartbreaking and filling. WOW.
I know exactly what you’re feeling. I lost one of the most influential men in my life (my grandpa) when I discovered this man. I want to enjoy his songs but I can’t help to feel my grief at the same time.
Before I found Michael, before I joined Guitargate, before someone on that forum posted SWJ's version of stand by me on the Print Shop show, before I heard THIS beautiful song, I had always thought American country style music wasn't for me. Well, how much have I been educated out of my narrow listening field and appreciation, how much have my ears and heart learnt to appreciate music from a resonance that I ignorantly avoided before. I'm a 65 yr old guy in England who should have listened better, I know. This song is just wonderful, in so many ways that I'm not really equipped to analyse, but I just know it moves me, and Stephen Wilson Jr is now firmly in my listening sphere - which I'm happy to say is growing day by day because of Michael's superlative teaching with these videos, and all the generous and knowledgeable contributors in Guitargate. Thank you Brandong, thank you Michael.
Had similar feelings. American Country was not for me... then I found artists like SWJ and John Moreland, and Nick Jamerson to name a few. Incredible Talents.
I heard this song for the first time today about an hour earlier. As you started watching the video and playing a couple strums on your guitar. I literally yelled at my computer screen, " PUT IT DOWN and LISTEN", and Right at that moment you Did Just That, and Really listened to the entire song with no stops. I've seen countless videos of yours, and believe you are one of the most Honest Genuine, Sincere and Real guitar players on RUclips I know.
Just seeing the look of awe on your face when he first started singing and you stopped trying to find the chord positioning and you just sat back to listen to the song... That's the look that must've been on my face when I first heard this song. There's so much here. It's a song that is a once in a generation, maybe even lifetime, feeling you get when hearing something like this. It's so hard to even describe but all his music is so captivating just like this. But this one is the best, a true gem.
I’m a physical therapist & years ago my son bought me a nice Bose Soundlink Mini Bluetooth speaker. At first I had no idea what I’d use it for….I took it to work & just randomly asked my patients what music they liked. I became a geriatric DJ & realized the power of music & memories. I didn’t play current music….to most that was meaningless. I used RUclips & Pandora & searched for exact songs & usually found the ones each pt asked for. I had a 80+ year old male patient one time who asked for 50’s music. I found some & that Bose speaker quality was amazing. As a certain song came on, I saw the man close his eyes & stop pedaling his exercise bike. I asked “Are you ok?” I got no reply….i again asked “sir, are you good?” Still no reply……now I’m concerned & got up to go over to him. The 50’s music was still playing a slow ballad as I walked up I said “Joe….are you ok?” He slowly lifted his head with tears & said…….”If I keep my eyes closed I’m sitting across the table from my wife on our first date”. Still gets me……😢
Stephen Wilson Jr. is the next GOAT. Is it considered country music?! I’m not AT ALL a fan of country music. But this guy right here is doing something that I can’t explain. I’m stuck on him since I discovered him early December.
I’ve heard this song so many times since that video came out… and every time I get emotional. This could very well be one of the greatest songs ever written! Well done sir!!!
Micheal…. I’ve been watching your channel for awhile now. You have exposed me to so much new amazing music that I might not have ever heard. Thank you for that!!! I’ve been playing for almost 30 years. I’ve played gigs all over. But these songs by Stephen Wilson jr really hit home. My father doesn’t play, but I can truly say that my taste in music comes from him. I remember conversations as a kid, him telling me about the members of a specific band on the radio and their history. He has always been a true enthusiast. And he passed that gift on to me. The funny thing is…. He watches your channel because he has sensed the same enthusiasm and a kindred spirit that he and I share. He might say, “I don’t know everything he’s talking about, but I love the way Micheal cares.” He found your channel on his own. I didn’t have to share it with him. All I can say in response, I feel the exact same way. Thank you brother!!!!
Your face whilst listening to this is all of us. Stephen is a gift to us all. I don’t know what I’m witnessing with his arrival but it’s otherworldly glorious. He’s tapped into something only a few touch. He gives voice to what we feel in that way that makes you go, “How did you know that was what I was feeling?”.
Found him today myself! And here I am thinking I’ve heard all the good music there is to listen to, and here Stephen is! You go, boy! You made your daddy proud! 6:03
So glad you have Stephen in the pipeline brother.....he is definately a man o the heart in his writing. I've been digging his play'n and writing since he started. He has pay'ed some vicious dues to finally get the recognition hes getting right now , and holds no regret for a single one o them. He is a large bundle o talent on the guitar , and plays with such passion that he always leaves his audience melting in their seats!!! You have covered another great new artist mr Palmesano with the same fervor that you have always done.....and I remain thankful for that always. I hope you and all your family have a really full Christmas brother , knowing that fullness revolves around the love we all hold deep inside for each other. Blessings to you always good sir. Cheers , and God Bless. ron
I love this channel, among the other things, for introducing me to new artists and music I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. This one is a prime example. What a song. Merry Christmas, Michael & thank you!
Holy moly. That’s a lot of sound coming from one guy with a classical guitar. Brilliant! His performance of “stand by me” from the same show is incredible, too.
Been waiting for this reaction video thinking how it would go down….Love the respect you gave the song that it deserves and says it all about how good this song is
Michael, my brother showed me this exact recording about a month ago and I've been a bit obsessed ever since. So stoked to see you reacting and how it captivated you like it did me.. bravo my friend! Thank you.
I absolutely love this SWJ song. The lyrics are incredible, his delivery is clear, yet gritty and filled with authentic emotion. Thanks for sharing his music. Interesting bit about music and the human condition; people with Alzheimer’s and dementia are most likely to respond positively and connect deeply to music and animals. ☮️
The way he makes it sound, is like as if music is a person that walks through life with you. It has many forms through the many phases of life. Love it
SO happy to see someone reacting to HIS songs rather than covers. His covers are actually better than the originals but he has songs that are his that are way better than either of those songs and he deserves recognition for that. Thank you VERY MUCH for this!
By the way, I know you did the video reacting to "Father's Son" but it is least among the recordings of the song though. And nothing against Hardy, he's great and all, but it is just nowhere near as good. Not to mention it is a personal song for him that he wrote about him and HIS dad.
You've nailed another one, MP. Thank you for the songs you've introduced me to over the years, the many insights into them, and especially your heartfelt understanding of the greater matters behind them. We hear you and are right there with you. Merry Christmas to you and to your entire family. 😊👍♥️🙏
music is the universal language. it can transport you to another time and place. its an absolute gift. im happy to witness you recognize this. i wish the rest of the world could understand this. God Bless❤
I saw him open for the Lone Bellow in Burlington VT. He brings so much passion and emotion to his music. And this is an awesome example of what he is about.
As one of those whose life was indeed saved by music, I'm so grateful for this video. What a song! Wow, that got me. Interestingly, this channel and your videos played an important part in my discovery of the music that was the life ring I clung to until I could stand on the ground again. Thank you for that.
The thing I love most about this page is how many new artists and bands I’ve discovered watching these videos. Thank you for what you do, and for exposing one of the best new (well new to me anyway) songs I’ve heard in a while. ☮️❤️&🎶
The words and the chords are great but it’s his dynamics, I believe, that brings it all together, and us to tears. Michael, love that you let it play this time. Like always, you get it. Thanks for what you do!😊
I really think this might be my favorite songs. Songs are the only real friends I have ever had and this songs makes me feel like that ok.and I'm not alone in that

What was so amazing in your review was when you go "what a song!!!" The first time I ever heard Stephen was this exact song and I remember when he got to the last line of the chorus in the first line of the second verse. I am so happy that there are so many people that feel about this man in this song the way I do. I would hear this song another 2 million times and never tire of it.
Wow instant emotional connection. This song is beautiful. I feel lucky to have found this episode Michael P This one is special. Merry Christmas Mr P Doug 😎
Told you, you needed to watch this full performance😂❤ During the perdormance/ interview this comes from he echos things you've talke about as a father, as a son, and as a musician. Happy holidays to you and the family
music is one of the true friends we have its always there when we need it this song has so much depth to it and so much meaning in it and you paint such a beautiful picture with your words you are a true master of the telling of the meaning of a song
Excellent review of "I'm A Song" by Stephen Wilson Jr. I'm fortunate to know him and much of his family, being from his home town Seymour, Indiana. Been a fan since I first seen him perform in 2018. Be sure to check out his debut album Søn of Dad 2023/2024 you'll not be disappointed.
@guitargate this bit you said about the soundtrack to our lives linking us to our memories rings so true to me. Here is a piece I wrote a few years back about an artist who helped me through covid lockdown. I feel it just as such today: I think the most amazing thing about music is its ability to transcend space and time; to transport the listener across memories at an eighth-note's notice. Play the Beach Boys Greatest Hits, and I'm riding alongside my father in his old Volkswagen Thing, the wind whistling in my ears with the top down, the tinny ring of the old-fashioned horn echoing with a push of the rubber button on the dash board. Anything from Dave Matthews Band Under the Table and Dreaming comes on, and I'm back on Ocean Point with my best friend Rye, walking an evening away and trying our best to recite the lyrics to Ants Marching or Typical Situation. I can smell the salt in the air as the summer sun's heat fades out of the tar along our favorite route around the neighborhood. Virginia Coalition's album Home This Year brings me straight back to first semester of my senior year at Bates; I'm on the third floor of the library or somewhere in Pettingill Hall, it's the middle of another night sifting through photocopies I made of things I found in the Muskie Archives as the days wear down until my thesis deadline. The odd cocktail of exhaustion, excitement, and distraction is as palpable as every verse. For better or worse, I think Pete 's music will always bring me back to 2020. I'll hear a chord or two of Rose or September Leaves or Wings or Dear July, and I'll be right back here, holed up with Kayla on one of these Saturday nights. We'll be sitting at home, chatting with others in the online community that Pete has built and forgetting, at least for a few hours, that there was ever anything else to do. I'll be reminded of a time that even when the universe seemed intent on taking everything, we still had a whole hell of a lot. And for that I am grateful.
I love this concept. Everyone can think of memories in their life when they can still hear the song that was on in that moment. Check out his version of “Stand by Me”. So much passion
Someone send him Grief Is Only Love by Stephen Wilson Jr., that song has really hit me along with everything else the man does but I’d love to hear Michael’s thoughts on it.
The fact you didn't want to stop the track says all we need to know. This one goes across all genres for anyone who feels deeply connected to music. Emotion. Pure emotion. Bravo.

his version of stand by me from this same performance is absolutely legendary.
Love that! That is very emotional. I hope Michael reacts to that soon!
Was going to say the same!
Yes it is amazing, so is the cover of "Something in the Way". However he has absolutely legendary songs of his own, songs that are actually WAY better songs. He deserves recognition for his own work and then come back to the covers later.
I second that.
Really !!!
The best written song I've ever heard....I've watched Stephen play this over and over hundreds of times.....my eyes water up ever time
I can’t listen to it without welling up and yet I want to listen to it a hundred times in a row. It’s truly remarkable.
So glad you didn’t pause that first time. This song and performance is something special. Absolutely incredible.
So glad you did another SWJ track, he’s been a highlight for me in 2024. The whole Print Shop video is definitely worthy of your time.
No doubt thousands of others have said it, but the amount of amazing music I’ve been introduced to thanks to this channel is something I can’t thank you enough for.

SWjr's GRIEF IS ONLY LOVE brings me to tears
I'm with ya.
Grief is only love thats got no place to go 😭 so fkn good. SWjr is a genius songwriter!
I can't listen 😭 ... It is an AMAZING song 🎶

Listening to old songs is like looking through a photo album, it takes you to that moment in your life. Music is a time machine
Such a perfect way to put it
Wow ❤
First time I heard this, I immediately knew it was one of the best songs I ever heard.
Yep, goosebumps and choked up at the same time

I’ve been writing songs for close to 50 years, still writing, and I WISH i’d written that one. Kudos to Stephen Wilson Jr. Gorgeous.🎼🎶👍
Wow. He just made a very stoic 54 year old man weep.
This is the difference between singing a song and sharing your heart.
Been listening to this song on repeat for weeks. It may be my all time favorite song. just pure raw emotion and talent.
I'm so glad SWJ is starting to get the recognition he deserves. The world would be a better place if everyone heard him

Bro is an absolute legend. Amazing acoustic performance.
Stephen Wilson Jr. is the next GOAT.

I’m not AT ALL a fan of country music.
But this guy right here is doing something that I can’t explain. I’m stuck on him since I discovered him early December.

I’ve been saying the exact same thing to anyone who will listen.
I think you would love Richmond Fontaine too BTW.
I’ve heard this song so many times since that video came out… and every time I get emotional. This could very well be one of the greatest songs ever written! Well done sir!!!

I'm deeply moved by this song. It’s stunningly beautiful and emotionally profound. Got me all choked up. Appreciate you sharing it!

Not normally my type of music, so I didn't think it would get me, but it absolutely got me.
Simply beautiful.
I love this channel, among the other things, for introducing me to new artists and music I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. This one is a prime example. What a song. Merry Christmas, Michael & thank you!
michael you have a great way to articulate in words how most people feel when they listen to great artists like Stephen..thanks for that
Holy moly. That’s a lot of sound coming from one guy with a classical guitar. Brilliant! His performance of “stand by me” from the same show is incredible, too.
Bawled my eyes out the first time this song came up. Its absolutely gorgeous !
Been waiting for this reaction video thinking how it would go down….Love the respect you gave the song that it deserves and says it all about how good this song is

Interesting bit about music and the human condition; people with Alzheimer’s and dementia are most likely to respond positively and connect deeply to music and animals. ☮️
Wow, really cool! You know it’s quite a special tune when you don’t pause the track at all, not something you do often.
The way he makes it sound, is like as if music is a person that walks through life with you. It has many forms through the many phases of life. Love it

God Bless❤
Songs are like a bookmark in time to our lives
I saw him open for the Lone Bellow in Burlington VT. He brings so much passion and emotion to his music. And this is an awesome example of what he is about.
WOW!!! That whole show must have been EPIC!!!
@jeffyarborough9244 It was. And we were right on the stage!!!!
As one of those whose life was indeed saved by music, I'm so grateful for this video. What a song! Wow, that got me. Interestingly, this channel and your videos played an important part in my discovery of the music that was the life ring I clung to until I could stand on the ground again. Thank you for that.
Merry Christmas from New Zealand Michael. Stephen's music has hit me hard.... ❤
Love how you listen to these songs that catch you off guard. This song did that same thing to me
The thing I love most about this page is how many new artists and bands I’ve discovered watching these videos.
Songs are the only real friends I have ever had and this songs makes me feel like that ok.and I'm not alone in that
The amount of feel and texture in SWJ songs is staggering. From the first note time stops and I am fully focused on just what he is playing and singing 🙏
That's one of the greatest written/performed songs ever. I'm confident saying that even at this point
This guys story is extraordinary
Love this tune. Randomly found it on a Facebook vid a few weeks ago and blew me away. I’m a rock guy, not really country, but really love it.
All I can say is, Steven is an amazing artist. Truly blessed to experience his music.
Love this!!! Looking forward to seeing him at Merlefest!!!
"when your best friend died, i helped you cry". that hit HARD!!!
Mr. Wilson is a true diamond in the rough. He's a very decent performer with a haunting voice and playing a guitar he bought in a parking lot ten years ago but a really gifted writer/poet. Check out some of his others like Holler from the Holler - stunning.
I have shared this song with so many in the last couple of weeks. I’m speechless. I’m so excited to see you do this!
Love that you were as moved by this song as so many of us were and felt no need to break it down. It was so good to just see you as a music lover for a second and take the song in. So good. Thanks for doing that.
Mike your exactly how I want my Jesus to be ....never change brother and keep the video coming
My favorite Stephen Wilson Jr song!
This one has become one of my favorite songs ❤️
What was so amazing in your review was when you go "what a song!!!" The first time I ever heard Stephen was this exact song and I remember when he got to the last line of the chorus in the first line of the second verse. I actually started screaming while sitting all alone in my condo… "Oh my God oh my God.!! Are you kidding me? This song is perfection." I am so happy that there are so many people that feel about this man in this song the way I do. I would hear this song another 2 million times and never tire of it.
His Stand By Me cover is one of the greatest things I’ve ever heard
Wow instant emotional connection. This song is beautiful.
I feel lucky to have found this episode Michael P
This one is special.
Merry Christmas Mr P
Doug 😎
Thanks never heard this guy before... off to explore his music. These lyrics are amazing
I saw this about a month ago and I was like, Mike should share this.... here we are ❤

Beautiful tune Scotty! Love it. Merry Christmas!
Told you, you needed to watch this full performance😂❤ During the perdormance/ interview this comes from he echos things you've talke about as a father, as a son, and as a musician. Happy holidays to you and the family

Hell yeah, pumped to see Stephen Wilson Jr. on here again!
One of the best songs i’ve head in a long time. Songwriting is just fenomenal!
Great picker aswell, crazy dynamics

I’ve been listening to this album for the last few months on repeat!
SO BEAUTIFUL ❤️
Remarkable song. It’s being able to capture a vibe or a message you want to say and put it to guitar to help you say it. Cool video dude.
Thank you michael, for finding me at the right time, as always
Absolutely love this song.
Its such a beautifully written song. Stunner.
I purchased two nylon guitars this month because of SWJs music ... So inspiring
Seymour, IN has now produced two great singers/musicians. Why have I never heard of this guy until 2025?
Whoa. Amazing. Thanks.
@guitargate this bit you said about the soundtrack to our lives linking us to our memories rings so true to me. Here is a piece I wrote a few years back about an artist who helped me through covid lockdown. I feel it just as such today:

Is it a tribute to the power of music? Yes, yes it is. What a song indeed!
I wish he would release this track as a single. Would love to have it. Such a beautiful song. Thanks for sharing it.
SWJ has been life changing. Saw him live in ATL recently and it was truly an emotional experience.
Great tune and performance
I love this concept. Everyone can think of memories in their life when they can still hear the song that was on in that moment. Check out his version of “Stand by Me”. So much passion
Really enjoyed this reaction. Great song. Great reaction.
Been waiting for you to do this one!
Merry Christmas, Michael! Welcome to the wonderful world of Stephen Wilson, Jr. I've been entranced since this Print Shop video dropped.
Love this dude and this song. Stoked to know he tickled your fancy. Thanks
Also really think you’d dig his tunes Kid, 1994, American Gothic, and Grief is Only Love.
Honestly worth the listen. Thanks.
Great take... I started thinking of all my best memories & there is a song there just a bit deeper for the most part. Amazing
Someone send him Grief Is Only Love by Stephen Wilson Jr., that song has really hit me along with everything else the man does but I’d love to hear Michael’s thoughts on it.
If you get a chance to see Stephen play live absolutely do it. He won’t be playing small venues much longer.
