Similar to the situation in other Muslim-majority countries, I'm finding Somalia (Mogadishu) to be a male-dominant society -- but that doesn't mean there aren't incredible women doing big things behind the spotlight!
So, I wanted to focus this video on the talented Somali women in Mogadishu who aren't getting as much recognition as they deserve.
Through Instagram, I got connected with Yasmin and Maryam -- two young women who represent a new generation of female entrepreneurs and social media stars in Somalia. Here is their full story!

I’m chinese-Japanese but have over the years befriended a lot of Somalis. Those that I’ve gotten to know have been really kind to me and it’s sad that they don’t get mentioned a lot In media. Also whenever I visit their place their mothers would always make sure to feed me or give me shaah even if I’m not hungry lol, I find it caring.

It touched me, and I'm really happy that they managed to get ahead despite the difficulties of living in a place that is primarily seen as a male-dominated culture.
