Just out of interest, I've not seen the old Medford for a while- I take it you've still got it? If it came down to a choice between the Medford and the Hinderer slippy (all sentimental value aside), how would you compare the two- as they are both 'hard use' knives? Cheapest and best; I call it "Meanie Tea". Buy a "quarter" of loose leaf tea (Sainburys or Tesco etc). Put a quarter teaspoon of this in a cup and add boiling water. Add anything you like; lemon, cayenne etc OR drink as it is. A quarter pound lasts "forever ".
