I met Jesse Barfield at a baseball card convention in the early 90’s, he was a great guy, we even joked with each other for like 10 minutes about his 6”8 400lb bodyguard and how his nickname was “tiny”, something I’ll never forget!
Love those old WPIX games. If you search my channel for more Rizzuto clips, you see one where Bill White read a letter on-air from a shopkeeper who ran into Scooter back in 1949. Hilarious!
Wasn't a yankee fan but used to watch their games because of my brother.....man I used to love watching Barfield throw people. Him and strawberry in that era
I was lucky enough to see Jesse Barfield play RF for the Blue Jays and Yankees in his absolute prime. The only guy that possibly had a better arm in the modern era is Dave Parker.
@@freethepeople4093 That he did. But, in my opinion, Barfield and Parker had better arms. Recommend that you google "Dave Parker throwing out Brian Downing at the 1979 All Star game."
Great game for Barfield. But I loved hearing Phill Rizzuto’s voice. I was born in 1954. I grew up a big Yankee fan. I remember listening to Yankee night games on the radio. I fell a sleep many a night listening to Phil’s voice announcing the Yankee game. I felt like I knew him personally. I remember when Bill white Joined Phill. They were great together.
Whitaker was so out at the plate that it took 1.5 seconds for him to come into the picture on the screen. The catcher had time to set up and wait for him. Whitaker had time to think about going back to third.
That was the game's only run. Neither team was going anywhere, but the Tigers were heading for their first losing record since 1977 in a big way, destined to finish at 59-103. The Yankees would sweep the series to climb to 42-41, their high point for the season.
I always considered Barfield to be the poor man’s Dave Winfield alcohol. By the way, in spite of Lou being a little compromised around that time, he should still be in the Hall of Fame and I’m not sure why he’s not. Holy cow to that!
I can't believe these announcers are talking about Barfield like he just came out of A ball and is surprising everyone with his arm. Just shows how much their Yankee tunnel vision makes them ignorant to players on the other teams because Barfield had been doing all the things these guys are gushing about for 8 or 9 years in Toronto (some of his best plays in a Jays uniform happened at Yankee Stadium).
that's Tom Seaver and Phil Rizzuto you idiot...It was seaver's first year with the Yankees and Scooter probably never got a chance to watch Barfield a whole lot unless they played the Yanks. There wasn't social media back then. Heck, I don't even think there was baseball tonight yet. Yankee tunnel vision. Dumbest thing I have ever heard. Everybody had tunnel vision back then because you could only watch the great players from opposing teams in the Playoffs and if they came to your stadium.
Barfield wasn’t a secret..hence why the Yankees got him..Phil Rizzuto was not just some tunnel-visioned Yankee fool. He was a Hall of fame ballplayer..He was just an excitable announcer.
Absolutely terrible baserunning by that guy getting thrown out at the plate. How does a major leaguer take such a wide turn around a base as he did around third? He added a significant distance to cover making it much easier for Barfield to throw him out from shallow right field.

If Jessy Barfield pitched he’d throw a dozen no hitters.
He's a dead duck, HOLY COW!!! HOLY COW!!! I miss Scooter!!!!

Barfields arm was a rocket
Man, hearing the Scooter and Seaver. These were tough times to be a Yankee fan. But we had our moments. God bless the Scooter!
This was just before they hired George Costanza.

The 50th anniversary of the Lou Gehrig speech
Wait, Fred Lynn played for the Tigers?
Sweet Lou Whitaker. He's lost a few steps since '84. You can tell that hamstring affected him.

Jesse always made it look easy and smooth.
If bob geren had to wait any longer he would of fell asleep lol
Tommy Brookens stickin' it to his old team.
Look at the legendary Fred Lynn
I really didn't remember Fred Lynn was still playing then

Man I miss Allen. Cant think of baseball without thinking of him
😢😢😢😢all the announcers pass on in life
The only player that could come close was Andre Dawson
Yes👍🏻
Right fielder con un cañón de brazo
Love to hear Mel Allen. This Week in Baseballlll !
I remember this game. I always liked games liked this.
Trivia question. Who played cf and lf that game
May have been Claudel Washington.
jesse was a beast with the blue jays. i couldnt believe the yankees got him. he wasnt great with the yanks but still a dangerous power hitter.
Injuries started piling up on his by the time he got to the yanks
Turned out to be a bad deal for the Yanks.
THIS is baseball---not the abomination of today's game.
Freddie Lynn, bitches!!
Hoooow about that?

That had more to do with Rizzuto having the attention span of a golden retriever 😂 He was my favorite spaz announcer.
Three dumpster diver ash hats.
Way too wide of a turn. Doesn’t seem like base runners cut the bags back then as well as they do now. Even Barfield’s turn was wide.
Thank you, Mister Baseball Coach.
