Whelp, I guess no more showers for me... The only 'mold remover' they are selling us over here is bleach-based crap.
I do have Hydrogen Peroxide though, but it's 12% (used for RetroBright purposes to whiten yellowed plastics via UV light). I guess I need to dillute that with a lot more water then? But what about the moisture issue when using water? Wouldn't that raise the humidity levels even further and create the same environment for the mold to grow again?
What about 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol? Does that also kill mold and its spores when sprayed onto the affected areas? I also have bottles of that.

Note I used to have a restoration business and was trained and bonded for mold removal. Also I am a chemist who graduated in 1982 from Virginia Tech. Mixing vinegar & Baking soda neutralizes the acid of the vinegar (Acetic Acid becomes Sodium Acetate, Sodium Bicarbonate becomes CO2 gas -- yes the complete reaction is a bit more complex). It is the acidity that kills the mold, so mixing them would be silly. Mold is killed by acids and strong bases, Also oxidizers kill mold. BLEACH, like hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizer (basic perchlorate ions for the win) and will kill mold organisms and destroy spores -- as do most oxidizers. However bleach does not soak into porous materials such as drywall well, it mainly kills the surface mold, leaving the imbedded mold, which is why it is no longer recommended for restoration work. Bleach is excellent for tiled areas though. Also, the acids (of which vinegar/acetic acid is the safest) are generally much more effective. Mixing distilled vinegar (acetic acid 5% acidity) and hydrogen peroxide is much more effective, but is damaging to skin and eyes. If you use the mix, make it up fresh and use immediately. Borax, is a basic oxidizer, but generally works best in hot water, whereas vinegar works fine in cold water.

Take it from me. As a runner, my shoes often get soaked in rain water and tend to get a little moldy. Last time this happened I got the bright idea 💡to soak the shoes overnight in a bucket of water mixed with distilled white vinegar and baking soda. When I mixed everything, the solution would always fizz up. And after repeating the soaking process 3 different times overnight, the shoes still smelled moldy. And I didn't feel like the vinegar and baking soda soaks did anything at all. Which was pretty frustrating! Then it became very obvious to soak the shoes in vinegar separately from baking soda. So one day I soaked them in vinegar (to kill the mold). Then the next day I'd soak them in baking soda to remove all odors. Guess what? That worked perfectly and the shoes smelled normal again! So always clean with vinegar and baking soda in separate cleaning cycles. Don't mix them together bc it won't work with mold.

@@fatima-zahrakajji4821 I just submerged the shoes in a big bucket. The first time I filled up the bucket with white vinegar & water (50/50 mix). After ~12 hours of soaking, I dumped out the vinegar & water. Hosed down my shoes to rinse them (to get the vinegar out of them). Rinsed out the bucket too. Then I filled up the bucket again with water (enough to cover the shoes). And I added in about 2-3 cups of baking soda. Then I let that soak for 12-24 hours. Then I rinsed everything with a hose again. And tada! the shoes smelled fresh and clean. The shoes will prob float up when you soak them... so I just used a water jug to push the shoes back under water to soak.

Mold is a living organism and like anything else, has a defense system. The spores do not hurt you. The mycotoxins that it produces through its metabolism, and the microbial volatile organic compounds(MVOC’s) from its metabolism can be harmful to people.
When you “kill” mold with a biocide, it’s communicating information through its mycelial network, and kicking its metabolism into overdrive. It’s going to excrete mycotoxins and other secondary metabolites that will attach onto the spores. It will sporilate to distribute those as a defense mechanism, and try and germinate elsewhere.
When you kill mold. You make the spores count between 1.5-10x higher in that moment. Proper remediation is calling someone that’s licensed and understands it so you don’t contaminate the rest of the house.
You’re advising people to do something that will ultimate contaminate their home due to lack of knowledge, containment, and proper cleaning supplies for microbial and fungal growth.
The color of the growth determines nothing more than the food source(substrate) that it’s on. Black does not necessarily suggest Chatomieum, or Stachybotry Chartarum.
Even more common ones you’ll see in ubiquitous amounts in a home like aspergillus can lead to aspergillosis in cases of extreme exposure. They can even inhabit the aviolas of the lungs. There’s even cases of asp/pen growth being surgically scraped from the brain.
Like any other substance knowledge matters, and dosage matters. Do your research. Understand the biology of mold, and the difference between mold and mildew. Understand that there’s professionals in this profession to prevent people from doing things like tearing out contaminated materials and cross contaminating their living space.

I bought a house that had moldy drywall all throughout because of a water heater burst, the house was a flip house and was beautiful but no one wanted it because the mold looked scary, i got it for half what i sold it for. First i removed all drywall, then i painstakingly wiped down every stud in the house with bleach water, then used a microbial bomb kit to fog the house, cost 400.00 also ran the a/c fans during the fogging to get the vents. I re drywalled the house and painted and finished it. I had an air test done when i finished the house and it was perfect. It was alot of labor but i saved at least 10, 000 by doing it my self.

12 years ago a plumber taught me this. Make double strength pot of coffee add 1 cup of bleach. It will turn clear. Pour into a spray bottle and spray on sheetrock, wood , whatever. For some reason the acid in the coffee makes it work. I sprayed sheetrock that was completely black around my office windows, it did disappear but then reappeared a few days later. I sprayed a 2nd time. It has been 12 years and it never came back. Obviously if you have large areas you should remove the sheetrock and put new. I have used this on Cabinets and in bathrooms it always works.

A common misconception is to mix vinegar and baking soda together. They cancel each other out! The only real thing they are good for together is when you have a clogged drain. Filling the drain with baking soda and then adding the vinegar on top will create a bubbling effect that can help loosen up whatever's blocking the drain below. It doesn't always work 100% though... you will most likely have to do it a couple times AND use some elbow grease with a long, poky object as well.
...But yeah, vinegar and baking soda CANCEL each other out!

I also add some dawn dish detergent to the baking soda before the vinegar. It acts as a grease cutter if there is anything down there that is fatty. Also let it sit for 10 min and then rinse with hot water (be careful with boiling water, it could loosen the glue in the pipes and cause a different issue)

My property manager sd they just removed mould from my wall after cleaning my air conditioner. We were home and weren't told they'd be using a talc-y, powdery mould killer, or they removed it, vacuumed. I think there might have been a language miscommunication. They said they didn't smell it but there was a hazy, fog all over my apt and it was choking me out. idk what they used or did. I'm not sure if they thought I was implying the air conditioner they cleaned. But I had already pointed out the black mould in the wall where the air conditioner goes. My caretaker looked at me as if I was being ungrateful of the work being done. When they left there was a chalky dust covering everything and I had just spent all evening dusting, washing, I had to wash the bed sheets twice today because of it. I still smell this dusty, chalk in the air. I've had all the windows open and all exhaust fans going. I don't think they knew what they were doing.

After the Dr asked several questions she said it was the A/C. After inspection she was right. Said"you may not realize it , but it is slowly killing you". We checked several other enclosed offices several of them had mold in them. Others weren't affected as the offices were bigger and people were in & out where I was in there 8/10 hours a day. 15 years later my lungs are not good. Have to be careful of colds, it really affects me.

The problem is it smells like mildew as does my house. The majority of them was to basically cover it up. Only one out of seven said we need to take the whole basement down to stud and find the source of the odor. BUT even he thought it would be a few windows and door seals. I tore the basement to studs myself and realized it has nothing to do with door and window seals and is actually traveling down from the 2nd story behind the siding. Me myself figured out the issue. Not some so called basement expert. And yes, 3 out of the 7 had over 20 years experience dealing with wet basements and mold issues.

My landlord won't deal with it either. I got the same stuff, the Conchrobium. But, now that its on my headboard, I'm starting to flip out. Its multiplying fast! Did you just spray it or scrub? I'm scared cuz of his statement about dead mold causing problems too. I've been having trouble breathing, and when I found it in my clothes it gave me rashes. My Dr sent me to an allergist and I'm allergic to all the molds they test for. The landlord acted like he was gonna do something and even had me have 2 remediators come out and then said it wasn't the structure and it was my fault. Both remediators said he needed an air quality test, but the 2nd had a meter reader and there's high levels of moisture in the walls getting higher as it gets to the ceiling. He also taught me what it looks like and showed me it on 3 dressers and a wood box box I have on the floor.
He (landlord) waited till late fall to make the decision. I realized what was happening last June! Now, I'm trapped in here in the NorthEast where there's nothing I can do. One company told me to get an ac to help get moisture out, but its way too cold for that now. I'm loosing my stuff, my health & my mind cuz of this shit. This place has had water leaking for 20 years the neighbors tell me! I dealt with water leaking in here 5 years ago, but apparently just cuz he fixed the leak doesn't mean the problem is fixed. This is a nightmare. I hope it works for you. I'm scared that spraying it will spread it before it "crushes" the spores like it says. I'm also tempted to try the fogger. Of course its just a temporary fix, but at this point I'll take that over mold everywhere! The mold here is white, so I can't make him do anything without getting an air quality test myself and a lawyer. I don't have that kind of money!
When I noticed it growing thick in the back room on something where it wasn't a few months ago, I figured I had nothing to lose and just squirted it. It seemed like a good test run before I did my headboard. It did mostly disappear. I didn't scrub or rewipe. I just sprayed it and left the room. But, I'm really afraid of spraying it on my headboard; I'm also afraid to go to bed with it there. It's behind a box I made for my cat to look out the window, so I can almost pretend its not there. Almost. 😢

I’m also not sure a 1:1 ratio would spray out of a spray bottle nozzle. Seems it would be more of a paste, but I haven’t mixed a 1:1 ratio yet. Would you mind confirming if the 1:1 ratio was correct in your video?
Just ripped out 150 sqft of floating-floor yesterday (a luxury laminate with cork backing) because of an ongoing washing machine leak. Visible black colored mold spores on the cork backing and the concrete subfloor.
I covered the concrete subfloor with a 1:16 borax/water ratio. Now I’m worried that wasn’t strong enough...

Then, fibromyalgia, which is caused by inflammation over your entire lymphatic system. Then, you will start getting "post nasal drip" which will cause you to cough and clear your throat. Near the end, you will be spitting up unimaginable amounts of clear mucus, like a baby...like cups of it. As it progresses, you will be tired constantly, motivation to live or participate in anything will go, and you end up in bed. You are so tired, that if someone said they were going to dump a truck load of dollar bills onto your front porch, you would cry, because the thought of having to go pick it up is more than you can handle. It's the most painful, horrible thing you can imagine, and death is the only thing that appeals to you. In the meantime, doctors will tell you it's all in your head. I find that hydrogen peroxide works fine with mildew. For basic germs _(eg, on door knobs, television remotes, simple non perishable things, etc.)_ then I use 70% isopropyl alcohol. But once things start getting serious _(like with mold),_ then you'll want to break out the vinegar or bleach. Then after bleach or vinegar, you can throw in some baking soda. But baking soda (which alkaline) will neutralize vinegar (which is an acid).
Bleach also happens to be alkaline. I learned that alkaline substances like bleach and baking soda are great for neutralizing and cleaning up pesticides. Hand soap bars are also alkaline. So to clean the pesticides off of the walls/floors/carpet in my house, I'm making my own alkaline cleaning solution which will consist of baking soda, alkaline water, and a soap bar. So far, this style of cleaning with household products has been amazing for helping with allergies!

I have a question for if you don't mind answering it and if you do thank you in advance for your response especially considering that you wrote this 2 years ago. I dry all my delicate clothes in my laundry room on a drying rack but in the summer months (I live in Ontario Canada and it is pretty humid here) we always have a dehumidifier going and the AC and in the winter month we have the heat on and our fan running on our new furnace to circulate the air. I've never noticed any mold in my basement or laundry room which is where I dry my clothes so do you think taking these steps is what helps? Our basement was renovated back in 2018 and we took every precaution we could to try to damp-proof all the walls, floors, etc. I just want to make sure I don't create any mold from the inside by deciding to dry my clothes on a rack rather than in the dryer. What are your thoughts?
I'm only on this page because I've noticed some mold growing in one of our tiled showers on our upper floor (2-story home), it's probably not enough to have an inspector in here but I'm very weary of mold becuase I've had some major health issues over the years due to my autoimmune conditions and Lyme Disease and I just want to make sure I take care of the mold in our one bathroom asap before it gets any worse and want to prevent any further mold growth.
I'm pretty sure the mold in the one bathroom has started because we haven't changed out the calking in several years now and because the grout was never properly sealed in that bathroom, however, we do always run the fan in the bathroom for at least 20 minutes after every shower. So I'm hoping I can just spray the moldy area with 3% hydrogen peroxide (this gentleman mentions diluting it but wouldn't a 3% concentration work best for this application?) then I'll leave it on those areas until it drys and then maybe go back with some vinegar afterward since you should never mix HP and vinegar because of the toxic fumes it can cause. Then I was hoping to let that sit for a bit and then scrub the mold with some baking soda (since again you should never mix baking soda and vinegar because the BS neutralizes the acid (vinegar)) remove the caulking, replace the caulking once everything is clean and reseal the tiles grout. Do you think this would be an effective way to clean this little bit of mold that I have in my bathroom without possibly jeopardizing my health any further or should I just have a grout and caulking restoration company come in to take a look at it?
I don't think my bit of mold requires a full mold remediation specialist because they can cost thousands of dollars. I just want to make sure I effectively kill the mold and spores first before I scrub at them, I'll wear some gloves and my respirator and then throw the gloves and brush away afterward but I don't need to wear an entire hazmat suit do I, lol, or have to worry about knocking up spores into the air? I do have one baseboard in there that also looks like it has some water damage so I should probably remove that as well and see how bad it is. Sorry for the long-winded response/question. Have a wonderful day!

I always recommend remediating outdoor colonies because one of the occupants is going to get in the habit of opening that particular window and develop a hypersensitivity.

I realize this video was made years ago, but I'm surprised you didn't say that people need to leave the sprayed on products on the surfaces for several minutes to kill the mold.
Vinegar without baking soda would kill some mold. Baking soda mixed with vinegar is only useful as a paste: it would have to be scrubbed on, which would spread any surviving spores. Adding baking soda to the vinegar in a spray bottle will clog the bottle.
Hydrogen peroxide doesn't needs to be mixed with water, and actually shouldn't be diluted. The stronger it is, the more effective it is but only if used correctly: on a clean surface and left to sit for at least 8 minutes. This is information directly from experiments posted in scholarly articles.

vinegar Plus baking soda will lead to the formation of CO2. Baking soda neutralizes the acid in the vinegar and thus reducing the pH!
p.s. most molds prefer an acid environment to grow.

After doing the demo on a basement that had a couple feet of flooding and a couple weeks of heat to make it a scene from Mario Brothers I went over everything with a pump sprayer and bleach. A charcoal filtered mask and goggles did the job for large molecule gas. 6 months later there wasn't any mold still.

2:00 is where he says what to use that you may have at home to kill black mold but the main thing is to determine the type of mold you have by consulting a professional and having it determined if and when to have it removed by a remediation specialist.

Exactly. Not all dark molds are ‘black mold’.

Any tips for swamp coolers? I used vinegar today to clean mine up but it seems like it's always the perfect Breeding ground and tends to come back every year. There are always areas you can't really get to.

I had a basement window leak behind the wall. I have white mold growing behind the wall under the floor in the ceiling in the rafters of the basement. Mold is growing on everything. We are tearing all the walls out. But I’ve been washing everything with bleach water for a month now. Think of washing everything in your house it sucks. What kills white mold? What should I be doing?

Thank you for sharing. This mold was found in my child's playroom. There was a cavity inspection made and it is on top on the ceiling. I was wondering if anything in the room can be saved or should we throw everything out? Thank you.

My apartment has mostly gray mold all over the walls and ceilings and it was due to me being away from the apartment for a few months. I had my windows closed but had a ceiling fan on but it wasn't on high. I'm located in a very humid area. Will zinsser mold killing primer work getting rid of the mold? I have used vinegar to try to get rid of the mold... spray it on wall and ceiling and wait an hour before scrubbing it with a bristle brush. In the areas with a good amount of gray mold, I was able to remove maybe 50% of it. It would then always come back. However, the big areas with a lot of gray mold which is throughout 2 rooms... I barely removed anything at all. Would this mold killing primer be all I need to remove the mold? So I just paint over the ceilings and walls and that is it? I have a ton of mold in these 2 rooms... apartment is just these 2 rooms. I heard you first need to kill the mold first... so that would mean spray vinegar on every ceiling and wall area with gray mold... then scrub all the areas... and even though the gray mold is still clearly visible... you then wait maybe an hour before you go and paint the wall and ceiling with this? The thing is I have a lot of gray mold throughout the ceiling and wall in one room... the other room it's mostly on the walls. The wall and ceiling is cinderblock or possibly concrete I believe.
Can you give advice on this?
