I'm studying for a film history exam and came across this video to help gain some insight on the overall big picture of African Cinema and its history- and I'm glad I did! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for this video. It has really added a lot of value to my understanding of Film as an African Film student. Great video and I'm immensely grateful.
Film is expensive to make in Africa, the little people that have the funding are interested in stories for a general audience. Those able to make films with serious tones have limited releaseq and marketing, plus the majority of the audience can't afford it. They can't afford cinema or netflix. As a filmmaker i keep thinking of ways to make a meaningful art but for audience where they can easily have access to it and somehow not run at a loss.
Unfortunately it seems African cinema is underdeveloped in the context of its global presence. Maybe the next step in the evolution of cinema and/or visual motion arts will occur in Africa. So much potential and beauty and history.
@@foreignfilmsessays ..how would you help tho? You haven't even managed to mention one of the great masters from East Africa:Haile Gerima. Bypassing that while talking about African Cinema, it's quite grave.
Not true. There were already AFRICAN filmmakers before the independence of African countries. For example Albert Semama Chekli started directing films in the 1920s or even before. And there were also Egyptian filmmakers in the 1930s.
Thanks for the insightful overview of African Cinema

What African movies should be in a list? I keep on coming back to the classics. What about the diaspora and new ones like: Mati Diop
Where can we access or watch these films
