All of a sudden, the L-mount has become a very appealing option. With Sigma’s line-up and Panasonic’s announcement to focus from now on enthusiasts and professional photographers and videomakers, there’s a great opportunity to enter full-frame class without breaking the bank. Today, S5, S1, S1R and SL type 601 cameras are available in mint pre-owned condition at an incredible low price point. Each of these cameras are excellent in their own realm.

@@richrollin4867 there are also rumours about an S1/S1R update/upgrade this fall, but until further announcements it’s hard to tell. Although we’ve standardized our FF sets in the studio to Nikon Z, I kept my S1R trial camera as well. The images from that sensor/processor are so gorgeous…

I've been using the Sigma 14-24 f2.8 for landscape and astro. This 20mm f1.4 is very attractive and tempting to add to my kit. I love the locking on the manual focus.

That is actually impressive in the corners! I did not expect that, honestly...
Sigma had a history of trash corners with their DSLR-mount 24 and 20mm f/1.4. The latter in particular was massive, despite being almost useless for wide-open astrophotography work.
The point is, well, points of light look pretty dang good from this smaller and lighter lens, especially in the corners! Well done, Sigma.
From my casual assessment, it looks like this lens does indeed beat the Sony for astro-landscape work. The Sony is troubled by both field curvature and softness in the corners, plus a bit of coma/astigmatism. I suspect that when this Sigma hits f/1.8 or f/2, it is truly significantly better.
The only other lens I can imagine coming close or being "preferable" (for some) might be a Roki-Yang 20mm f/1.8 or 18mm f/1.8. If such a lens offered sharpness on par with the excellent AF 24mm f/1.8 FE, I'd be sold for lightweight backpacking use.
For "roadside" use or any hike where weight/size isn't as much of a concern, though, this looks like a winner.

Same sort of impressions were given by @nebulaphotos in terms of astrophotography. Panasonic is now a really viable platform for widefield landscape astrophotography with these lenses.

Thanks. I love the 20mm focal length. This could be my Aurora Holy Grail lens. I've been searching for a fast 20mm (at least f/1.8) for 2+ decades that would work for me. Pretty much tried them all I think. Latest try was the Sony 20 f/1.8 and my copy wasn't at all good with coma (but it appeared as good or better than someone on-line reviews 🤷🏻‍♂️) so I sent it back. I've pre-ordered a Sigma to try. Fingers crossed. Currently using the Sony 24 f/1.4 and 14 f/1.8 for auroras, mostly for panos but the 14 for occasional 1 frame shots (gotta crop out the corners tho 🤦🏻‍♂️).

at this point, i would think for uwa it would be good to know the t-stop. corrections in iq sometimes take some light out and make a f1.4 a (just an example) t1.8. that would help choose between this and the sony 1.8

The worst thing about this lens is the limited lens mount availability. Hopefully they add Nikon Z at some point. I do have an adapter, but I’d rather have native mount. It looks like a fabulous Astro lens.

All the Sigma Art I fixed lens tired are excellent for astrophotography. The images are usable out of camera. And it's fast enough that you don't need a tracking mount. A simple tripod is enough.

  • @KNURKonesur

A wide angle lens like that is BEGGING for a "vlogging" section, which is kinda missing here. Otherwise a great review as always. The only issue I have with all reviewing channels is putting "bokeh" and "depth of field" in the same basket. Most modern bright lenses have spades of depth of field, but have almost no bokeh. I treat bokeh as the character of the out of focus rendering. Usually when speaking about modern, clinical, corrected, smooth, creamy, buttery lenses, it translates to boring and artificially blured in my book. This lens has a tiny itsy bitsy amount of bokeh in its out of focus areas, which makes it even more tempting for vlogging or even super wide portraits. It's nice to see specular highlights shown in the video, but there's way too little context in all of those pictures to get a good image of what the background looks e.g. when shooting a super wide portrait against a bush/tree on a bright daylight - which would be the ultimate bokeh test in my book.

It's funny to see how you, "lenses testers", have raised your expectations about lenses sharpness. This 20mm is on the chart an amazing performer... at f1.4 !!!!
Don't forget all the yesterday lenses that gave mediocre results at f2.8 !

  • @ArumesYT
    @ArumesYT 2 года назад +3

3:48 Even at F/2.8 (you forgot the division sign btw) you can already see sunstars appearing. Did you miss that in your review? Sure the bokeh itself might be nice, but what happens around those bubbles is very undesirable.

What is a Noct? You give the weight in grams. You give the weight in lbs. What is a Noct and who uses that measure? You? Personal measuremect. Do you have a full size Noct stored in Paris at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures and made of Platinum...so it can be compared to at any time to get full scientific accurate?

Get either the Sony 20mm 1.8 G or the Voigtländer Nokton 21mm 1.4, I have had a 20mm Lens for many years, to me it is not the "right" focal length for still Photography, I have not used the 20mm for more than 2 years, my wide angle Lenses are Sony 14mm 1.8 GM, Sony 24mm 1.4 GM and Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical.

If Sigma can catchup with sony's autofocus and oversampling then they would be a contender. They need to prioritize these features and probably abandon this small factor style because it only makes the camera body less ergonomic and non weather sealed.
