  • The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) protects both women and men from abusive relationships. It helps people leave their abusers who they would otherwise need to get lawful status in the United States.
If you are applying for a green card through a VAWA self-petition, or VAWA cancellation of removal, you will need to give Immigration proof of your abuser's status in the United States. It may be hard to prove your abuser's citizenship or lawful permanent residency if they do not want to help you.
Here are some ways you can prove your abuser's citizenship or lawful permanent residence status in the United States:
0:43 Original copy of your abuser's birth certificate
    1:24 Copy of your abuser's U.S. passport
Other kinds of evidence for U.S. citizenship:
2:00 Ask Immigration to check a previous application filed on your behalf
2:48 Consular report of birth abroad
3:12 Your abuser's certificate of citizenship or naturalization
    3:49 Marriage certificate
4:03 Your children's long form birth certificate
4:22 Your abuser's voter registration record
    5:00 Affidavits
Proving your abuser's lawful permanent resident status:
5:42 A copy of the front side of their green card
6:01 Ask Immigration to check a previous application filed on your behalf
6:31 Ask for a copy of a policy that you co-own with your abuser, such as health insurance, mortgage, or a bank account
