- Ladies and gentlemen, the Sony PlayStation 2 is a wonderful console. It had so many amazing games that changed the industry. It had DVD playback which was incredibly useful and worth having in the early 2000's. And Also, Gran Turismo 4 supported Epson printers. Because how else were you going to show your friends at school, your office co-workers, or your friends at the bar that awesome car that you just unlocked. That's right, PS3 could print from a lot of third party printers. But PS2 had one of the earliest examples of a traditional photo mode in a game. And today, we attempt to use it in the glorious year of 2024. It.. did not work exactly. And yes, I'm still salty.

This is giving me some early 90's printer PTSD.
I remember reading that feature when I first played Gran Turismo 4. It was a cool novelty. However, I did learn a lot of photo taking skills from that game, like focus stutter, flash, filtering, and composition of your shot and cars. Two decades later, I still continue to take many lovely car captures in various video games and apply what I learn over the years to each shot I take. It's a nice fun and relaxing hobby for me to do.
I remember playing with it too it was amazing back in the day, I also spend alot if time in GT7's aswell even if i don't actually take photos lol just to see the cars close up and admire all of the fine details in the car models. One of the cars in the game i own in real life, so it was fun seeing just how accurately they got the fine details.
What you're saying is, a video game taught you how to be a better photographer. That's awesome.
And parents used to say video games don't teach you anything! Well they can shut up.
If you're feeling the itch like you said, GET A CRT MAN. The vibe is unbeatable.
Not gonna lie, that tv he has is small enough that using component out it may look better than a CRT for ps2 era games

@@AfterBurnerTeirusu Larger CRTs need larger amounts of room to store and work well as space heaters in the winter.
Don't get me wrong, they're great especially if you want retro done right, but most people don't want to make room for them. For me even storing 2 plasma TVs and a few spare LCDs is too much.
I remember spending hours taking photos in GT4 on PS2 and transferring them to a USB thumbdrive to show people.
after LGR's video about a printer, i'm not surprised this didn't work

I got mad nostalgia for memory cards. They were overly priced, you would always lose them, but I’ll be damned if I don’t miss revisiting your past by looking through your memory card saves and the unique animations or jpg’s they had. I had a memory card that was nothing but FF7 saves. Good times

It's good and all, but for me the ultimate bootup is still the PS1, for that epic sound collage. I even modified my PS3 to play the PS1 sound when it boots up, and again every time I run a PS1 game on it via the built-in emulator.

@@SonyEnthusiast The joys of custom firmware, in my case Evilnat 4.91 Overclock with Webman installed, plus Ultimate Toolbox for changing boot animation and sound to original PS1 logo/boot noise. I think the PS1 BIOS is on /dev_blind partition. This is on a launch CECHA00.

Try to connect to upper/left usb port when console is in vertical position just like with GT steering wheel.
If the console is vertical, the USB port that's on the left when it's horizontal would now be the bottom one?

I still have a photo somewhere of a Toyota Supra going over a crest with glowing break discs printed from my PS2 to an Epson Stylus Photo R200.
The PS2 really was ahead of it's time.

Man hearing that PlayStation 2 start up brought me back to my childhood. I loved playing Lego Star Wars the original trilogy on there and the original God of War and ESPN NFL 2K5.
I remember back then there also this PS2 obscure Japanese Gravure game that lets you take photos of models and also lets you print it like on Gran Turismo 4.
You might want to also get that game when you come back on printing Gran Turismo 4, I think it's called Motion Gravure Series.

When I had my PS2 i used the Audio Optical and cable/cord. Man the sound was so much better. even watching DVD movies sounded so much better and in Stereo Surround with the set up I had back then.

Printers don't work in the best of days. The fact it even connected is a miracle.
Gran Turismo 4 had many options.
Including 1080i, which you can use with Component cables. It's not true 1920x1080 but it's still impressive a device put on the market around the year 2000 can output that resolution from a game at all.
The PS2 game Vib-Ripple has the ability to import photos to use as the texture for the floor of the game's arena. It's done through USB, but you can't just use a USB stick with jpegs on it. You have to use a digital camera with a USB export mode that works with old photo printing kiosks, etc. Probably something more commonly used in Japan. I got it to work with a USA Fujifilm camera from about 2003.
From the early days a modded PS2 was also my 1st PC. It ran whatever formats you could think of and it worked amazingly overall costed peanuts compared to a PC. The best console ever.
Thank you for this video. When I first found out about the PS2 printer capabilities, I was shocked to find no content about it on RUclips!!! Many people have covered the PS3 printer capabilities, but this is the first PS2 vid ive seen!
It was neat that Sony used to have all these features in their consoles and I do understand why some people lament that PS4/5 have disregarded these multimedia features. But, to be honest, I doubt many people used them. By the time PS4 came around, people had phones, tablets and TVs that were already stuffed with multimedia apps.
Sony just focuses on making their consoles for playing games and, based on PS4/5 sales numbers, that was probably the right way to go.
(and, no, Sony won't put a web browser in their consoles. Browsers were a very common way to hack consoles in the past)
ps4 5 has a browser though.... and I think hacks exist too :)

@nattila7713 PS3 had a Web browser too, I used to use it to download torrented music straight to the PS3's HDD lol and it actually worked.
@@nattila7713 They do technically have browsers, but they aren't easily accessible. And while hacks do exist and probably will always exist for every console, the console makers don't want to make them easy to do.
It's just weird that I see people wanting modern consoles to have browsers when everyone has a smartphone.
As someone mentioned, the Web browser is still there on PS5, it's just hidden. Only really used for signing onto WiFi that needs a browser to click accept in or whatever.
While it's true some previous consoles have WebKit exploits, the newest PS4 based one is PPPwn, which uses vulnerabilities in the PPPoE Internet feature of Network Settings (legacy 2006 or so era GPL type code I think) to do a memory/overflow exploit. Works on PS4 models of all types up to and including 11.00, so if you haven't updated your PS4 in about a year it might be worth a go.
I never played the ps2, got all the ps consoles and stuff in my attic. I grew up with the ps3 but this type of stuff is so entertaining to me, even if I have no clue what's going on 🤣🤣. Thanks for the content!

btw the difference between film and photo is that photo is just a regular raster image file (a jpeg I think), but film is a dynamic render, so it's "infinite" quality, however you can't use it outside the game unless you convert it to a photo

You need a period correct Epson printer which still has ink cartridges being made or refilled ones which still work. Because if the print heads are not removable, cleaning them is an involved process.
The PS2 DVD player is highly underrated. At one point I had 200 dollar Blu ray player that had issues with a few discs. A Sony! But the funny part is the much older PS2 was able to play 2-3 of them with no skipping. When the other 1 did skip I was able to fast forward past it where the more expensive (and then much newer) one just locked up. And this was the 2000 fat boy model. People call the player in there more or less average but that player was a beast.

I did this back in the day. The photos never came out great but I suspect it was the crappy paper I used. I think I still have it in the loft but chances are it's never going to work now knowing Epson's printer heads.

I never used the photo mode in older GT games but I do now in 7 , would have been cool to have a collection of photos from 20yrs ago !

Print it to transfer paper and iron that bad boy onto a tshirt.
Look through the printer menu. Just check if there is a firmware upgrade available for it. Might resolve this

If you think this is dumb then you'll be delighted to find out there's two other printers, both made by Sony, that had special support in some PS2 games!
One of them printed on just regular sheets of paper, but the other one known as the "Sony PopEgg" prints on special postcard sized sheets. They are both entirely incompatible with each other.
I've long maintained the opinion that buying even one of the Sony PS2-compatible printers is the point where video game collecting transitions from a hobby into a sickness.

Yep photo mode on PS2 Scaler (freeze mode similar to a flying camera but only fixed view on that spot) and GT4 did it in different ways.
But using a Printer or even the I Link port I assume very few used and the size of the files too hmm for such quality at the time. Great stuff.
Yep Scapes started here on GT4. PS2 was computer related.
Yeah EPSON support was a thing I noticed in GT4 First Preview I assume others maybe could have been compatible. I don't know for sure.

you can plug in a wired Microsoft red laser optic mouse into PS2 and play Resident Evil: Dead Aim. Yes you can use mouse to move cursor.
Those early vizios or any early lcd are sooooo underrated, by the way. My 36-inch vizio has a shit load of ports in the back. Now you are lucky if you get 2 hdmi ports.
True. I still have mine from 2009 and use it to play PS2 because it's the only tv I have that has component ports. Looks so good running GT4 with 1080i

Interesting video. For some reason my PS2 (fat version, SCPH-30004, PAL) can't even save the pics to a usb memory stick. Have used video capturing device to get some pics out of it.
Well, I just tried again, and now the USB stick worked! Bought my PS2 used in 2017, and last time I tried the usb stick, it failed to work from both ports.
I thought maybe it doesn't work with modern, big USB sticks, but maybe the contact pins were just oxidized after all.
Tried it now with Maxell USB 2.0 flash drive, 32 GB size, FAT32 format. GT4 created a GT4 folder and saved the pic in 1280x960 resolution and named it by default as IMG0000.JPG
