  • This video is a bit of a ramble. A comment I get a lot of that people want to use Blender but they like Sketchup's push pull tool too much. While Blender does not have a "push pull" tool it has many of the same functionalities, you just need to get a bit more comfortable with the software.
If you found this video helpful, I am planning on making a video about how to properly use the Sketchup Importer for Blender. It was our prime workflow for awhile so I know quite a few tricks to getting the importer to work perfectly every time, and ways to quickly get Blender renders.

    Great comparison!
About the bridge faces (or mainly other commands that isnt present in SU but it is on other programs) can be done by using plugins, that for me (as ive used sketchup for a long time) i always remember the shortcut and its functions just to use it (the plugin called for SU with a similar bridge face effect is called Curviloft) though as you said blender has different workflow (as i studying it right now with your vids and also other tuts) also the loop cut in sketchup (though not perfect as blender, and only can be done on hard shapes) is just double clicking on the face, shift+ click the face to deselect the face remaining the edges, then move (then ctrl to copy) to other side then divide by the number you want, though i think theres a plugin that can use for organic shapes but im not sure (maybe mostly paid?!?)
My only reason for me to have a hard time transferring to another program is that in sketchup, simple result needs simple solution (or rather simple command) the shortcuts are straight forward)
Though now as i am studying blender (even though the grab command still bugs my head, i always press M for move lol, because it is same with autocad and lumion) is that the shortcuts and commands seems to flow naturally as you model, i see it will be my second nature if i practice its navigation and tools (though complicated at first but im having the gist of it little by little)
And blender is free and have a great community, so i guess its really time to migrate lol
As always thanks for the tuts

If you wanted to move your "move" button to m it would probably be fine! "m" is a hotkey for something that is not used too often, and there are other ways of getting to it.
Blender does take some getting used to, but once the navigation part clicks I found everything was very intuitive.
There is an add-on called sketchup importer for Blender. This really helped me out because it let me bridge the gap between the two softwares. I am going to be making videos about this soon!
The biggest issue I see with Sketchup is it is kind of stagnant, there are not any big changes to it coming it. Maybe I am wrong but I think Blender will become industry standard for a lot of professions since people have the ability to tailor it to fit their organizations needs.

@@LuminousLabs thanks for the tip, maybe ill edit my shortcuts
Ill gonna try that importer plugin, maybe i can have a faster modelling with blender if that happens
Actually you're right, as the time trimble got SU, it doesn't really have any significant changes (and also it only relies on the plugins to do some things that normally other progs can do) also ive talkee before with some authors of SU plugin makers, they said that SU wouldn't evolve unless they transfer the code language from ruby to maybe python (like blender) so plugins can be much more akin to rhino grasshopper and blender. Also SU has some limitation to its own application (not intendedly coming from our hardware but the programs fault too)
As always thanks to the responses and tutorials
Ill be having to continue my journey of blender from now on

@@crisschan2463 the way I learned blender without getting frustrated that basic things were cumbersome was by trying sculpting or animation, something that I couldn't breeze through in another program but taught me the shortcuts and such

Now the question I have is if you think it is better to use Blender with Lumion or to use Blender with Unreal Engine or some other 3rd party rendering service? Honestly, the reason why I love using Lumion with Sketchup and or Revit is because of the Livesync plug-in. I can make changes on the spot without having to save the file over and over again. I am not sure if there is a 3rd party rendering service that does connect directly to blender (To the best of my knowledge which isn't much). I know Blender can render on its own and I have only ever tested it with small projects so I am unsure how well it renders with large projects.

I personally do like Blender with Lumion more than Sketchup. It is annoying not to be able to livesync, but what I find is with Blender I can have a much more finished model being brought into Lumion so it is not as big a deal. I just export an FBX/DAE file then refresh it in Lumion and it is good to go.
The issue I have with Sketchup to Lumion is Sketchup is missing a lot of very core features and the addons can't always make up for it. A good example is texture mapping, Lumion can only do basic unwraps because it assumes your 3d modelling software has already done. Sketchup does not have this functionality.
Blender has two render engines, cycle (ray-tracing) and eevee (real-time). You can get some pretty cool results in eevee but if I need really fast renders I use Lumion. Lumion is not designed to be the highest-quality render engine, but the easiest to use for fast renders.

What i dont like about Blender extruding system is that sometimes it just doesnt intrudes properly, and just adds new loop cuts instead of pulling it all like sketchup does (merging when it connects to a new face)

One thing that trips me up in Blender is that even in face select mode, push/pull/extruding a face is still a multi-step process. First you have to click the face, then you have to move the mouse and press again on a handle, and THEN you're allowed to start push/pull/extruding the face with the mouse. Is there a way in Blender to make it as simple as press & drag to push/pull/extrude a face?

What I do is select the face and then either hit e or g. This will let you automatically start to move the mouse in the direction you want. I would recommend locking it to the x,y,z axis when possible by hitting those buttons.

6:10 turning on auto merge might help sketch up users

I will have to look into that, to be honest with you I didn't even know automerge was a feature!
