he said this many times but it didn't mean he went into heroin because he didn't it's well known he used cocaine at the time and the worst period was 1974 - 75 when he barely ate and he had more than one overdose scare. After one of those scares his personal assistant Corinne Swabb told him that if he didn't stop she would leave. those two things made him decide to clean himself and since at the time he lived in LA which wasn't the best enviroment he decided to change everything and go back to Europe to live a more normal life. He chose Berlin because at the time there were very interesting things happening there musically and instead of living in a big mansion like in LA he lived in a apartment in an average part of the city nothing fancy. He walked around he bought his groceries and so on it was a normal life not a rock star way of living. Obviously we can presume his cleaning up wasn't instantaneous but it was in Berlin that he started the process and when he went on tour in 1978 he looked completely different very healthy and drug free.

EVERY addict is a human being, by definition. Therefore, in common with other similar human beings they are not only incredibly charming, but you must never, ever, ever take them at their word - but only by their deeds; you should always expect betrayal if you do display trust. You must never lend them money in any form or give them anything that they could ever exchange for money. Kindness will not only cost you nothing - it should equally have no cost attached to recieving it; therefore as soon as you sense dealing with them does have some "cost" or "obligation" attached to it, you are being played. State so plainly to them and walk away - kindly. Having spent over 34 years in health care I assure you of the truth of what I have said. What you do with it is up to you.

@rawhidewolf same here. The first album I ever bought was Young Americans in 1975 when I was 7, and I'm still a huge fan at 55. In the ensuing years after buying Young Americans, as I worked my way backwards through his albums, he seemed to be larger than life, but ultimately he was just as human as you or me, esp with addiction. I've been through a cocaine addiction in my early 20's and an opiate addiction in my late 30's...the latter started after a car accident and was almost 5 years of hell on earth. July 20 (next week) I will be opiate-free for 14 years and David Bowie's been with me every step of the way.

I find myself really conflicted-almost disillusioned-with David Bowie nowadays.
I grew up worshipping him. I didn’t have a dad, and his music, his movies, his interviews, they felt like having a pseudo dad that I could pull all sorts of love and advice from. But that was before a few months ago when I read about how he took the virginity of a 14-year-old girl in the 80s.
Like, fuck man. Not him too. Genuinely breaks my heart and feels like learning that pseudo-dad of mine is a fuckin’ pedophile.
