"Imbibed myself with the finer products of a pharmaceutical company" is how I'm going to gloss over the old painkiller addiction phase to my in-laws.
I love that! 😂
he said this many times but it didn't mean he went into heroin because he didn't it's well known he used cocaine at the time and the worst period was 1974 - 75 when he barely ate and he had more than one overdose scare. After one of those scares his personal assistant Corinne Swabb told him that if he didn't stop she would leave. those two things made him decide to clean himself and since at the time he lived in LA which wasn't the best enviroment he decided to change everything and go back to Europe to live a more normal life. He chose Berlin because at the time there were very interesting things happening there musically and instead of living in a big mansion like in LA he lived in a apartment in an average part of the city nothing fancy. He walked around he bought his groceries and so on it was a normal life not a rock star way of living. Obviously we can presume his cleaning up wasn't instantaneous but it was in Berlin that he started the process and when he went on tour in 1978 he looked completely different very healthy and drug free.
Berlin wouldn't be my first choice. It's a great city, but the party scene is a bit too crazy if you want to wean off the drugs 😁
Super interesting info ! You’re a real fan
@@joas162 maybe it's a bit hard to believe but he never was a party animal he said that himself more than once he was shy and sometimes even a bit socially awkward that's why he needed to make radical changes in his career and in his life to force himself to go out of his comfort zone. anyway as I said in Berlin he didn't live a glittery life the purpose was to go back in contact with real life and apparentely he was almost broke too.
@@houda1168 lol yeah and collector too.
good point. And in several bios ive read of Bowie, he states he only likes 'fast drugs' uppers, speed etc as he could create quicker. He loathed weed and similar
He was so very charming and disarming. Wish I'd had the opportunity to see him perform live.
Bowie was def a female to male Hollyweird tran
I'm a tremendous Bowie fan and was lucky enough to see him perform live starting with Serious Moonlight in Dallas TX in 1984 up to the Reality tour in Atlanta GA in 2004. I've seen hundreds of concerts by all types of musicians, most of the greats in modern music - Bowie was by far the most astonishing of all. He simply exceeded all expectations. An amazing performer.
@@Kyle_Riel Seek attention elsewhere, clown.
Yeah, charming and disarming enough to date an underage girl when he was a fully grown man. You'd have some luck seeing him perform live if you were a minor!
@@Kyle_Riel your obsession is weird. I think you’re the more likely sicko.
David Bowie is part of my life. Growing up, I never really considered the possibility that he was human.
David Robert Jones Bowie was "The Man Who Fell To Earth"
EVERY addict is a human being, by definition. Therefore, in common with other similar human beings they are not only incredibly charming, but you must never, ever, ever take them at their word - but only by their deeds; you should always expect betrayal if you do display trust. You must never lend them money in any form or give them anything that they could ever exchange for money. Kindness will not only cost you nothing - it should equally have no cost attached to recieving it; therefore as soon as you sense dealing with them does have some "cost" or "obligation" attached to it, you are being played. State so plainly to them and walk away - kindly. Having spent over 34 years in health care I assure you of the truth of what I have said. What you do with it is up to you.
Oh wow, you knew him?
@@GraemeGunn Sounds like you already had guessed the answer before you asked the question. Why be cagey or sarcastic? Just say what you honestly feel, like I did.
@rawhidewolf same here. The first album I ever bought was Young Americans in 1975 when I was 7, and I'm still a huge fan at 55. In the ensuing years after buying Young Americans, as I worked my way backwards through his albums, he seemed to be larger than life, but ultimately he was just as human as you or me, esp with addiction. I've been through a cocaine addiction in my early 20's and an opiate addiction in my late 30's...the latter started after a car accident and was almost 5 years of hell on earth. July 20 (next week) I will be opiate-free for 14 years and David Bowie's been with me every step of the way.
People like to say he wasn’t human, but he was, and that’s the best thing; anyone can look at Bowie and realise that we *can* be who we want to be, even if no-one else around us cares.
Stop blowing smoke up his arse. He didn’t know anymore than you or me. He was at best an eccentric and worse an degenerate.
You've basically captured why he's one of my personal heroes
That's a powerful sentiment. I'm the furthest thing from popular, but I'm a badass in that I do it exactly my way only.
He was a deeply flawed human who slept with minors. Anyone who says he is above human is just a fantasist.

David Bowie once uttered :
"I do not remember the year 1975."
He was talking about making 'Station to Station'. Released *1976* it's up there with the best.
Yeah it’s my fave
@@lesblack8996
My favorite album honestly. I looped that album so many times that I couldn't count
I gave myself tinnitus lying on the floor with my ear at the speaker listening to it. That was 48 years ago.
I've still got the vinyl .... and the tinnitus 😦
He said he didn't even remember recording the station to station album lol
I think about relapsing on OxyContin everyday. But thinking about it and doing it are two totally different things
Very proud of you
wishing you to stay strong!
Find some support. If you haven't already, that is. It's nice to be able to talk those urges out.
Another reason not to relapse is a bunch of those oxy pills are counterfeit and full of fent.
I watched Christiane F. when I was 11. I learned two things: never do drugs and buy all the records from Bowie.
That's the other reason why he was in Berlin.
Amazing film!
@@PiscatorLagerEr, no.
What he achieved in his lifetime was incredible. In this clip when he had shorter hair he looks extremely vulnerable as opposed to his later interviews, notably with Parkinson, when he had longer well-cut hair he was more confident and self-assured.
He was yet another spoiled boomer. No accountability and simply exudes that self righteousness you guys have locked down. Born of WW2 fighters and you all went on to worship the lowest drug addicts on earth.
He still had it but did not show it as much. We are all deeply vulnerable.
@@wolfganghasenmaier8350"Afraid" comes to mind right away.
@@juanblanco7898 Being afraid is only human
@@wolfganghasenmaier8350 Naturally. "Afraid" is one of my favorite songs of his.
That was the most beautifully British way of saying, "I did all the drugs and checked into rehab in Berlin, oof, my bad!"
They just have class, those Brits. 😉
I’ve never been a huge fan of his music. Just not my thing. But Bowie embodied class, cool, and art in a way few ever have.
Didn't he date underage girls while he was a grown man?
@@DYLEMAHD Are you asking or are you stating? Make up your mind.
There were claims. A 15 year old groupie called Lori Mattix claims to have lost her virginity together with her older friend and Bowie before a Los Angeles concert. She says he "de-virgnized" her in a threesome. The other friend claims that the 15 year old was never even there. I personally don't buy it.
Mattix also previously claimed that she had lost her virginity to Jimmy Page. (though, that relationship is very well documented)
Yeah, classy dudes sleep with minors...
@DYLEMAHD hey simp
@@DYLEMAHD he did date one underage girl. She always insisted that she wanted to date him and wasn’t harmed or manipulated, but it was still wrong in my opinion. I do love his music but that makes me uncomfortable.
What a remarkably intelligent, thoughtful individual, in addition to being one of the most creative people ever on a Rock 'n' Roll stage. David Bowie was a one-of-a-kind. There will never be another.
While he was saying I went to Berlin to clean myself up… I was thinking “yeah that’s not going to happen buddy!”
but he actually did.
That took almost four years and some medications and treatments; but finally he got clean since 1980. And totally sober since i think mid 90s approximately
A talented, articulate, drug addict. Like hundreds of millions of other talented, articulate, drug addicts. But very lucky, too.
yes. whose life span is usually shorter than most. i know, im one but so far so good. 20 years clean. more will be revealed.
@carpballet
Right. Like those skanky smack heads who are all so "talented" and "articulate."
Well said!
Yeah, funny how that works, isn't it? The harder he worked the luckier he got ...
@@curiouscatlabincgetsworrie7755 No, he was far luckier than most talented drug addicts. He became very successful and famous. That’s unbounded luck and has little to do with your anecdote.
@@carpballet Well, if you want to be wrong, who am I to stop you? You're probably pretty used to being this wrong so ... good luck! You like luck, don't you? :D
That eyeliner really suited him 👁👁

So the stiletto shoes. He weared them fcking amazing back in 1995.
I got to see David live in Manchester for my birthday which was in the late 80's I think. In 1972 I was at college and met up with two other folk who enjoyed David's music and style. We were known as freaks!!! But David was an artist who would continue to create until his death and Black Star was a sad time but also a work of art.
He is greatly missed.
Saw him at Madison Square Garden for Ziggie Stardust tour in the 70s. He is missed.
I first caught his Diamond Dogs act in 1974, just before he switched the tour into "plastic soul" in the run-up to the Young American phase ... while I was fortunate enough to see him four times afterwards between then and 1987 Glass Spider, I can still envy people like you who saw the Ziggy Stardust show...and in NYC !...must have been awesome...care to share? :)
Gone but never forgotten 😢
If while walking through the woods we’d happen to meet I’d immediately begin building a city around him. Just so we could sit and talk.
"I'm a mess without my little China girl
Wake up in the morning, where's my little China girl?"

I miss Bowie everyday ❤
Thats pretty weird. May I suggest that you get a life?
TBH, not everyday, in my case but often, very often. Same as for Freddy, Chris Cornell and other strange and wonderfully creative and different people. I miss genuinely different people, not posers. But year, grateful fornthose amazing álbums I think Gpogle was listening to me because just 2 hs ago I sang and recorded Let's dance. VIVA DAVID!
Beautiful beautiful David….🦋
who the fuck moves to berlin to clean up lmao
He used mainly cocaine and almost died from it in LA, so not that strange. Also Bowie was very interested in the Weimar culture in Berlin in the 1920s and early 1930s.
A fantastic man and artist.
Such an immaculately beautiful man
He'll always be the Goblin King to me!
Blue, blue, electric blue...that's the colour of my room..

Im not gay either

Bowie has made many mistakes. He raised his son and developed a close relationship with him. He was a loving and doting husband and father in his later years. He's VERY human. Just an extraordinary, superhuman artist ❤
It's amazing how similar he looks like Scott Weiland here
Without Berlin, "Heroes" (the track) would never have been written. It's only in the last few years that I researched the background to the writing of this song and why "Heroes" is written in quotes as an ironic title. The wall was visible from the studio window..
AND David brought along that pillar of sobriety and clean-living, IGGY POP! 🤣🤣

Addiction isn’t about a place. You don’t ‘catch’ it. It is something within. When you move, you take yourself with you
Very true
Addiction isn’t about a place, but it's much about a surrounding. He'd changed surrounding from holliwoodie lazy lizards to Berlin experimental scene and Eno's circle who i think was the only person who kept clean in seventies, lol. Thats why the changing place worked out well.
handsome face
So what were the "Swiss pharmaceuticals" he referred to?
Not sure exactly, but I'd guess he had access to the purest cocaine known to mankind in the mid '70s. Perhaps it was produced in Switzerland?
@@jeffbrown-hill7739 duh. acid was discovered in CH.
probably doctor hofmann and sandoz corp
David brother Terry suffered from schizophrenia. Perhaps Bowie's characters helped him escape from his brothers illness.
He was so elegant! ❤
I had a hip operation which I waited for around two years of excruciating pain due to osteoarthritis of the hip. I am only 50. Anyway the pain was unbearable and was basically prescribed opiates including liquid morphine
Even after the operation which has healed properly according to my orthopeadic surgeon I can’t stop taking the pain meds. I get lethargic, anxious and am frightened to go outside to walk properly. I was told they woulfd give a plan to taper off them and yet nothing from my GP.
It’s really very hard after they fed me with all these meds now my hip has healed but no follow up to get me off these things. I used to be very active now I am the opposite. I feel I need these meds to get me through the day. It’s horrible. I wish I never started them but the pain was so bad. I am basically a zombie.
Look after your bodies
So Bowie is about you.
when i was a kid my much older neighbour who was an Arsenal fan always said Tony Adams was the David Bowie of defenders i didn't get it then...
David was, what we called back then, a "coffee achiever."
He was in a commercial promoting coffee addiction to Americans. Good on him!
there's nothing better than two decent lines of fresh coffee in the morning, if you know what i mean
How cute.
Thought it was Jordan Henderson’s
Sorely missed
With art involved people pick a lot of addiction with grace - once a junkie has a mansion it's all fine.
I thought it was Machine Gun Kelly before I read the title
Iggy Pop & Bowie in Berlin. Wow, what a ride...
He was An alcoholic who couldn't go into a pub. Sad.
He always seemed to be acting and posing. He’s pointed out that heroin and downer drugs were never his thing.
Yes berlin is the worst place if you wanna get clean i thought before then said it himself :D
75…76… I was there, at Bahnhof Zoo…
idk the first thing about Berlin but it just doesn't seem like the best place to go if want to stay out of trouble.
He lived such an amazing life and done it all by using his mind to create that life he lived
Is that the follow up to The Connells '74 '75...? 😂
Well played, sir.
*doffs cap
I miss qualudes too!
Upon reflection, a unique man and talent, before his time, that nobody really understood.
Eloquent and articulate as always.
I was on fire……. so i went to a gas station🤷♂️
I never understood drugs in the music industry. Every artist I listened to was on something. I never understood the appeal. Why not create your own heaven instead of a synthetic one?
Being too intelligent, having insane amounts of success and other similar factors are often the reason. It's always a mix of different factors, not just that one thing that makes them addicted
I think it obviously did occur to him
Didn't occur to me at the time? Sure bud
Lol that fool knew… funny guy
I should’ve paid more attention while he was with us. I liked him always, but this man was a treasure

Too many taxes in Britain then. Facts.
I find myself really conflicted-almost disillusioned-with David Bowie nowadays.
I grew up worshipping him. I didn’t have a dad, and his music, his movies, his interviews, they felt like having a pseudo dad that I could pull all sorts of love and advice from. But that was before a few months ago when I read about how he took the virginity of a 14-year-old girl in the 80s.
Like, fuck man. Not him too. Genuinely breaks my heart and feels like learning that pseudo-dad of mine is a fuckin’ pedophile.
I don't think he is a pedophile.
@@kattosi5865 He took a 14-year-old’s virginity. It’s pretty black and white man.

I am on Suboxone. After being opiate addicted since 1995. It's 2023 now....
I have been on buprenorphine, without naloxone for 12 years, started heroin in 1988. I'm 62. I hate heroin and methadone. When I started with suboxone I got an arrhythmia, I don't have it without naloxone.
