ValLovesBatmanAndTR ikr??? All that development for Barney, just thrown out the window so that the writers' stupid Ted/Robin agenda can be realized! What a crappy finale. The Mother dying was bad, yeah, but at least it serves as a sort of lesson. Happy endings do happen, but they dont last forever. Sometimes we only have someone for so long so we should love them as much as we can while theyre still here. Thats fine. But that lesson is completely nullified bc Ted is just like, "Well, I still have Robin!" at the end. And then there's Barney, whose character development is basically erased just so Ted and Robin can get back together. What were they thinking???

Whether Robin and Barney should stay together is a good example of what matter more in shows: realism or unrealistic fairytale ending that most audience like.
Realistically speaking, Robin and Barney will break up. Both have little believe in commitment. Obstacles can easily break one of them into old habit while the other one is not firmly committed to anchor the relationship. Both also think relationship depends on passion which almost always fade away... Their relationship almost certainly won't last. Suppose given this realism, the writers can either create a dramatic event to end their relationship, or create a montage to show how their relationship fades away. It is actually still poetic. Beautiful things like passion-based relationship, don't last forever. Enjoy it while it lasts, and let go when it ends.
Now, most audience want a fairytale ending, despite realisim. I personally think reality is beautiful as is. It is fine for beautiful things to not last forever. People should appreciate the beauty along the way, instead of fixating on the inevitable ending.

The first time I saw this scene I was so happy for them as I’m a huge Barney and Robin shipper and I still am but after watching the show 4 times I can’t help but picture Ted’s face looking out of the window and how much that feeling sucks when the person you love gets married to someone else as something like this recently happened to me and it broke me in ways I can’t explain so this song always reminds me of Ted and how he must be feeling at that moment ik many people don’t like him but this made me empathise with him.

Yes, the whole setup was a giant manipulation. But notice step 16. Step 16 reads "Hope she sais yes." Barney didn't write "Step 16: Marry Robin." He only hoped Robin would say yes. Ultimately, he placed the choice in Robin's hand. The play, the setup, it was all an act. An act to show Robin what she's in for. Essentially, Barney is saying "If you marry me, this is what you sign up for." While manipulative, it is honest and true to Barney.

After watching the series for 3rd time. I can finally say. I get it. I get why it ended the way it did. Right on season 8 ep. 12. Where Ted tells Robin about Barney's plan. You can see in Ted's eyes how much he loves Robin, he loves her so much that he's willing to give her up for her own happiness. He's very much selfless at this point. It might have takin Robin awhile to realized it but she did in the end. This show is the best!

@@orifeldman3213 You Swarkles shippers rail at the ending for reversing character development when S8 is very guilty of it moreso than the ending. Barney has manipulated people in the past. But it was played for laughs and I don't know anything about those characters maybe they gullible. But S8 and that proposal scene actually reversed Barney's character development. He claimed he burned the playbook only to bring it back 2 episodes later. And not only did Barney manipulate Robin into the engagement. He also did it on Ted's big night. The night where ROBIN of all people was willing to support him. And Ted had to force Robin to get Barney because he thought she loved Barney. The fact that people defend Barney in that episode is eye rolly. But Barney-Robin shippers are as toxic as the actual couple. Forcing people into thinking they were perfect when they had huge red flags and actually showed why they don't work.
