      Robert Newman the books are great, but, one reason I loved CE story on the same level as 2 and 3 is because it felt like you were w child entering a new world. The little things left unanswered made the world feel more expansive as there’s history you don’t know. Sometimes less is more. For the main conflict, it definitely should have depth, but the halo, the history shouldn’t be told , especially through like audio logs and all.

    I disagree with saying that ODST failed in its semi-open world execution. Given that all the missions prior to Data Hive are told in flashbacks and given specific time stamps you don't need to do them in order to understand them.

      Halo was originally envisioned as a squad-based RTS like Myth to be released on Mac. Then some technical failures happened, the company was about to go under, and Microsoft bouyed them up to make the release title for the new console. That process moved it from RTS to 3rd person action game to FPS. The openness of the second mission is probably derived from the original game vision. I'd almost guess that it was originally the first level, and the tutorial level on the Autumn was prepended after it became an FPS to introduce the gameplay loop in a more confined and linear space.
      These hints of open world throughout the series are derived from its conceptual roots as an RTS, in my opinion, and that's what gives it its unique feel. The dynamic and tactical behavior of the enemies comes from Bungie's experience with making tactical squad-based RTSes, where you have to get that behavior right to make the game feel good. If 343i is tapping into _those_ roots for infnite, I think they're going to succeed in what Destiny and Anthem promised but in the end failed to deliver.

      @oliverdowning1543 4 года назад +1

      Tim H. Early on, yes. But it was already an action game by the time Microsoft bought bungie as far as I understand, the warthog mechanics were already like they are today by Macworld quite a while before Microsoft had anything to do with bungie

    To be honest. I do not understand why most every commentator talking about what makes Halo “Halo” focuses on the one example of an open layout level layout from the first game. You mention yourself that no other Halo embraces this concept, not even the rest of Halo CE. So if that is the case, then how can people constantly claim it is the true “Halo” experience? People did not stick around for the next 6 entries of the series because the second level of Halo CE was open. What you say about well balanced sandboxes and tight guided level design with set pieces is true. That is what Halo has always been about. The Warthog tunnel run on The Maw, Large Scarab battles on The Storm, Flying around the falling city of New Alexandrea. That is much more “Halo” than a map that let you choose in which order you want to navigate to waypoints.

    Seeing a small channel, at work for years, finally take off with some fresh Halo content is so inspiring. Really does build hope for the community of Halo Infinite.
    I have mixed feelings about open world gameplay. On one hand I love the open sandbox areas of Halo CE and the occasional bouts of vehicle gameplay in the later games. On the other though I am getting a bit turned off by the sheer number of games that have adopted RPG elements, leveling your character, purchasing upgrades, whatever. I also fear the experience won't have as many well crafted and unique areas. One of the best things about Halo has been the sheer uniqueness of each level. My hope is to get something akin to The Silent Cartographer or Halo from Halo CE perhaps with a slightly larger scale. Essentially that the player may be transported through a cutscene & story beat to some new open area with a unique draw and then after running around and completing the goal be transported to a more linear designed locale. A good example of this would be how in the Silent Cartographer the player runs around the island in whatever way they choose, even skipping that initial segment where they get tricked and the door is locked, and then begins the following mission where the player is brought to an underground tunnel system only to again open up to a large expansive snow area through Assault on the Control room. This loop I think is what made Halo CE's mission structure so interesting and each new zone so captivating.
    I won't be too upset if the game is fully open world though as long as it is executed well, I just might feel like some element of uniqueness was lost. Halo CE revolutionized linear fps games in a way that hadn't happened since Half-Life. Excited to see what comes in the next few days!

It was easier to come up with something more unique back then but now the expectations for certain things are so high it's impossible to satisfy everyone. All I hope for is a great Halo game that looks beautiful, rekindles some of the nostalgia of those great moments I had from the old games...and is at least better than Halo 5..

    I feel like there's a difference between non-linear worlds, and open worlds. I don't want an open world Halo, I don't want to trudge through a bland plain, seeing the same assets over and over again. A non-linear game, however? Something like ODST for example, that I'm down for.

    I completely agree with you, but it's a risk... I would be worried if they attempted a fully open-world people would just see it as a Destiny/Anthem clone. I personally enjoy them but their success rate is less than desirable. A lot of people will probably disagree it would be interesting to see Halo with a Skyrim wold feel/map, IDK lol.

      I think Halo can succeed where Destiny and Anthem failed. I played a lot of Destiny, almost exclusively PVE. I still know most of the original patrol locations like the back of my hand. The problem is that the Destiny world is shared between players, so it has the same immersion break as MMOs, where what you do can't actually change the physical space all that much because everyone else needs to be able to do what you just did. Destiny's loot and combat system also causes problems because there's numbers that have to keep getting bigger over time, so there isn't any time to just appreciate the space you're in and wonder why it is the way it is. I haven't played Anthem, but the rumblings I hear give me similar notions.
      Halo Infinite has two massive differences that could make it work: Single player story and fixed sandboxes. The examples given of good open world games (Skyrim and Witcher 3) are singleplayer. The world can change in massive ways when you accomplish some objective because it's just you playing the game. And the fixed sandbox is what can really shuffle things up, because the reason I haven't significantly played those other games is the weapon grind. There's numbers on all my gear, I want higher numbers. There are quests to complete that give me loot, I have to pick the right option that gives me the loot I want. A fixed sandbox and story solves that problem.
      Lots of gamers will inadvertently do their best to optimize the fun out of a game. I do it on purpose, because optimizing is itself a fun thing for me. But optimizing numbers on a menu gets in the way of playing the game. When the only thing to optimize is your gameplay loop efficacy, and that loop is enjoyable, optimizing your gameplay is fun and makes the game more fun to play. _That_ is what gives a "shallow" fixed sandbox arena shooter as much replay value as a highly complex strategy game like Civ or an intricate RPG like some of the Final Fantasy series. If 343i have realized this and are leaning into it, we're going to see Infinite define how to do an open world game, just like CE defined how to do an FPS.

    A lone spartan...an ambient atmosphere as you explore an open Halo ring, full of beautiful environments, enemy encampments and roaming enemies with great AI making for fun and memorable engagements (Brute packs, Chieftans with Hammers, Agile Elites, Elite generals with energy swords)
    The world full of things to discover, wildlife roaming (both friendly and hostile) vehicles used to traverse, survivors to join up with each with their own objectives or scenarios or problems to help with....
    It doesn’t have to be the entire campaign, but it could be a really great implementation nonetheless...I regret the story in a way the flows well and maybe several open “areas” of the ring, that you progress through as you progress through the game

    This was an excellent video, nice job!
    That being said I do disagree with a few points. You talked about Halo stopping the use of open ended levels with less exploration and while to a degree I’d say that’s true there are still levels that rival the second mission of combat evolved.
    New Alexandria gave players an entire city to explore with their own personal falcon.
    ODST had the Mombasa streets you could explore and go almost wherever you pleased.
    Silent Cartographer gave you the entire Island to explore, no limits to where you could go.
    ONI Sword vase gave you a small area to explore by being able to tackle either of the two objectives.
    Winter Contingency also has a section where you could just drive around and go to different areas.
    So I’d say Halo has had its fair share of open ended levels with plenty of exploration.

    Halo for me was best captured by Combat Evolved. It was mysterious and eerie. It was open and beautiful. It was the wonderment that was so awe inspiring. The enemies were diverse and unforgiving and the music was emotional and captivating. The characters were so likeable. Captain Keyes, the level headed Officer who's ready for any challenge, against all odds. Cortana, the sarcastic, stubborn confident smart AI. Master chief, the gritty, reserved hero we all see a part of ourselves in. Of course we also have Sgt. Johnson, Echo 419, and the various factions of enemy that we face. These characters had chemistry that went beyond that of what we thought a video game could achieve. It made sense and it wasn't forced. The characters felt organic and well written. They felt real.
    Over time, halo changed its approach from a sci-fi military shooter with a mysterious and eerie undertone, to a game that lacks direction and identity. The characters we've been given are wooden and unrealistic. The enemies are boring and worn out and the environments became less and less creative. The storytelling is all over the place. Halo 4 was a little bit of a let down. I still enjoyed this game and the direction it took. Halo 5 was the nail in the coffin and Im not very confident that 343 can redeem themselves with Infinite. I hope they prove me wrong but I will keep my hopes low.

    • @timh.6872
      @timh.6872 4 года назад +1

      If 343i does a skill tree or any kind of in-game upgrade system for Infinite, Halo is dead to me. If they want to make a spinoff with a different set of characters and have a craftable upgrade system from harvesting Forerunner tech, I'll give it a shot. Chief's story, however, is of the child soldier trained to be proficient in every method of combat, and you get to build your skills and reflexes to live up to the hype surrounding his legend. He's always been powerful, but it's through skill that those powers are unlocked, not points.

    Kinda reminds me of the DayZ custom games I used to play a lot on Halo 5. Halo's gameplay really lends itself to large, open battlefields. And honestly? I think Halo Infinite shouldn't have sprint to make vehicles feel more neccessary. A lack of sprint makes movement much more meaningful.
