I've been using After Effects since 1995 and have done tons of compositing. But this technique is something that I have never tried before. It works great! Thanks for posting.
For so long I’ve been trying to figure out how to get my fog to match correctly, and would be so mad when the fog lightens the scene cause it looks so unrealistic… and I KNEW it was something so simple.. and finally you showed me the way!! Thank you so much
Awesome Tutorial ! Thanks quite a lot. Question: Is there an equvialent way of doing this in photoshop? Or am I stuck with the "screen blend mode" or the "Blend if" sliders?. Thanks and have a great week.
Niiice!! most people would make this a 25 minute video (20 minutes) for. hi im blabla,my fog i got from blabla,my after effects version blabla, my computer spec blabla, and (5 minutes) how to do it.
How do i make the fog last longer on the timeline because for me its just last for like 10 seconds when i want to make it last for 3 minutues where when i try and change the time it assume it last for 3 minutes but i don't want it to end after 3 seconds as I am a new user to this by the way.
Hey Mr Motion Science. I have a short scene (one angle, approx 20 seconds) set in a bathroom which needs steaming up as there are showers on and it needs to be implied that they've been on for a while. Do you think I can get away with using fog/smoke layers to imitate the shower steam? I can't find anything which would indicate that the technique would be any different. On the other hand, I don't want it to give the wrong message if it looked like smoke.
Great question. I would definitely try fog/smoke to imitate the steam. Try that first and go with your instincts on how it looks..if you were to walk into the "real" scene would it appear real to you? If that approach doesn't work, I would next start searching google images for "shower steam" pictures and then use those as a reference to try a different approach.
You can find the city footage here: goo.gl/P1msAe I don't remember where I got the smoke footage, but if you do a search for FREE ATMOSPHERIC SMOKE there are many options that pop up.
Hi, most of the video tutorials all the menu and icons are in blur, beginners find difficult to follow. Pls zoom and maintain focal clear. Otherwise all your works goes waste and not reaching to needy people......., we want tutorial on how to use presets in videos/t....hanks

Excellent tutorial and just what I was looking for. Just as an add on tip I would flip the smoke horizontally to match the wind direction.

Another option I use is "Set Matte" to grab the alpha from luminance and "Remove Color Matting" to kill the black fringes.

Not all heroes wear capes!
Thank you, Paul!
my masks don't work when I put the shift channels effect on the layer. You know how to fix that ? Great Video btw
Try precomposing the masks and then using shift channels on the precomp.
that worked thanks a lot !
Essential, thanks!
Thank you ;3
Excellent
Thank u very much
cool trick
on point!
Thanks!
where can i get fog for mac
You'll find amazing fog footage here: bit.ly/2FV3O2X
This Is Montreal !
Good solution. Only problem: If I use masks, I can see the edges of the fog clip again. Maybe precomp first helps. Nope, I´ve tried it, didn`t work.
Alpha matte. Create a adjustment layer, make your masks, put the adjustment layer above the fog, set the alpha matte to the adjust-layer. Done!
damn bro! why didnt i come to this before killing myself from trying other methods
This didn't work for me. The effect made my fog look flat. No idea why
fuck i wish i knew this six months ago
I've been using screen and add for like 10 years :(
I did too, but now you know.
S/O Montréal
Flip the Fog footage. Its going on the opposite direction of the smoke in background.
f##king awsome!
Thanks!
