- Now is the time to prepare for the April 8th Solar Eclipse and get the proper eye protection so that you can enjoy the phenomenon, but also protect your vision. Dr. Nicole Bajic with Cole Eye Institute at Cleveland Clinic Hospitals shares some important safety advice with Fox 8's Stefani Schaefer.
In "83, I experienced a total eclipse... of the heart.
I'm still not over it.
For all of those who do not have or cannot afford these special glasses, here is a tip. Take pieces of glass and cover them with soot over a candle. Same damned thing, and free. I did this for the solar eclipse in Wisconsin on June 30th, 1954. Worked like magic.
I’m ready to post up for the next eclipse in 2075
1:11 VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!! So you CAN look directly at the sun ONLY if the moon is completely covering the sun.
I was in the total eclipse zone, but i accidentally looked up when the total eclipse was starting to show the sun.
An interesting fact to know of eye safety concerns!
The reason why you can briefly look at the sun under normal circumstances without going blind is because your pupils reflexively contract in the bright light, like the shutter on a camera. During an eclipse, the situation is much different because, as totality approaches and the sky darkens, your pupils reflexively dilate so you can see better in low light, and as discussed here, looking at the sun during this period without proper protection can cause serious damage, so please be certain to protect your eyesight by using either a certified pair of eclipse glasses, or an indirect viewing method, whoch you can easily look up online.
So then people all through history, who didn't wear glasses?
I have a video of the 2017 Eclipse and I was just fine looking at it through my tablet. Squinting when it was too bright.
I'm not sure this is true but maybe people should take precautions and listen to what they are told to think and do. I use logic and common sense. God-given instincts.
What’s the difference if eclipse glasses to polarised glasses?
If you have polarized sunglasses and look at the sun, you will get eye damage.
Polarized glasses are useful if you put them on, and observe the sun in a puddle of water.
They filter out glare, and you can see the eclipse safe because the image has been decreased, not full strength.
Or, you can use a welding helmet lens piece.
Do not come to Ohio for the eclipse. It will be cloudy and rainy.
A welding helmet gives very good protection. Best result with a shade 10 or 11 glass. Shade 9 is too light, with shade 13 you hardly see the sun at all.
Welder's lenses.
Depends on the type. Some are not safe.
@@andrewd.conard5088 So tell us what type? Is it a number?
If your in the zone of totality you will definately know it. Unless your living in a cave.
The Egyptians used to look at the sun at sunset for health benefits
Exactly, I learned last year that I can stare directly into the sun and I'm fine. If anything, it decalcifies the penal gland.
Exactly. I sungaze often & it actually improved my eyesight. Most people think I'm kidding, but I'm not joking & it is what it is. The sun heals.
glad my tribe made it to the comments.
False precautions.
I keep wondering why they feel the need to tell us something that we can figure out naturally by human institutions 😂.
I watched it through my tablet in 2017 and I was fine. If it hurts your eyes you look away.
Maybe just watch it through your devices.
Last year I learned that you can stare directly into the sun and I'm not blind.
They push this so much that it makes me wonder why.
If the sun is too strong it hurts to much to keep staring.
I don't need anyone to tell me, my instincts tell me to look away...since childhood.
I can't wait to watch it on the internet.
